BLOODY TRENCHES

One one of Gaia's many forgotten battlefields, two armies carved out their campaigns into the earth beneath their feet and laid waste to one another. The conflict and those who forgot it have faded into the mists of Gaia's history, but the scars remain: long, deep gouges dug into the earth, and stretches of flattened, gray wastes.

Terrain

General: The fighting area is a long stretch (100') of trench. The trench itself is eight feet deep and approximately 12 feet across from inner wall to inner wall. The walls are bare, hard-packed dirt, and the floor is made up of wooden slats. There is a 1-meter deep, ramped alcove every three meters, once used by sharp-shooters to catch scouts across No Man's Land, which participants can use to get out of the trench more easily.

Weapons: Weapons are common in the trenches. Rusted entrenching tools, bayonets, and empty rifles and pistols can be found half-buried in the muddied floor.

Bonus Features: The Ring-Out Count has been double from TEN to TWENTY in order to allow fighters to leave and enter the trench for repositioning purposes.

Even here, of all places, he still didn’t have any fucking earth at his feet. Were the organisers of this tournament somehow prejudiced against nature? What sort of fucking army took the time to place wood floor in a goddamn trench, one of the most make-shift and temporary fortifications in all of history? John considered throwing a mini tantrum for a goodly while as he loafed around, getting mud all over his favourite jacket and stained white shirt as he leaned against the wall of the trench. At least his boots were already muddy and black trousers tended to hide the mess. Then again, as a Londoner and a street thief under the rule of Queen Victoria, John couldn’t have given less of a shit how he looked. His hair was perpetually messy, hence why he kept it under a jaunty little cap, and his lightly tanned skin seemed flecked with rock residue as if he’d been shovelling gravel.

For once, John actually fit into his surroundings, the shitty trenches.

“Bloody Trenches.” He spat, completely sincere about his feelings as opposed to simply naming the locale. It wasn’t a bad place for an earth elementalist to be, but it was still less than ideal, no room to manoeuvre and no dirt at his feet were almost deal breakers. Still, it wasn’t as if anywhere he’d been fighting beforehand had been any more suitable for his purposes, so complaining wasn’t really going to help him any.

He considered rifling through his pouch, past the cane and the rocks, to pull out a little tipple. In the end though he decided against it, leaning his head back and letting his thoughts wander, while keeping his nose and ears open.

Cherry Solo, Draft Dodger

Cherry Solo and murder hallways went together like peanut butter and jelly. Someone in upper management had realized that Miss Solo was deadly as all get out at close range and had decided to book the would-be hero to fight with as little room to maneuver as possible. Damages races were good for ratings apparently…

So now she was going to fight in a trench. Simultaneously longer and more narrow than any battlefield she had fought in before, the literal definition of a murder hallway, but since a fighting retreat with limited ability to serpentine wasn't the best idea this was more likely to turn into a standing bloodbath. Well, either way, she and this John Poppins were going to get well acquainted by the time the day was done. Cherry could be seen charging straight towards the trench at an angle, eventually reaching the rim and leaping straight in, that jump carried her to the opposing wall where she planted both feet against it and bounced off again, eventually hitting the rickety wooden floorboards no more than fifteen feet away from her opponent.

So who was he?

Given a few years John would be a mountain of a man but that was still a ways away and for now he was a small scruffy ruffian with a distinctly cockney look. Had it not been for a chance encounter with another equally dirty vagrant she might not have known what to make of the Victorian youth and truth be told she still didn’t. But her memories of everything from his mannerisms to his powers occupied an unpleasant place in her subconscious mind and brought an immediate frown to the surface. So much so that she almost glossed over the fact that she had seen this particular face before, almost. Cherry looked a bit different from the day she had made national headlines, mostly thanks to the addition of armor along her arms and shoulders, lower legs, and flanking her hips. Otherwise she looked very much the same, lean and clean cut, luxurious blue hair wafting about on its own and pulled into a ponytail, almost too glamorous to engage in a real fight if she wasn’t widely publicized as having maces instead of fists.

John Poppins had a degree of fame to himself as well. They were fighting late in the Combat League and while Cherry hadn’t seen tapes of his matches, no cheating after all, she knew for a fact that he had already faced Smalls and Misra with the dominant opinion being that he'd brutalized both.

“I didn’t know you were in this tournament too.” Cherry knew from experience that both were worthy warriors. That meant John was dangerous, he certainly looked like he’d seen his fair share of scraps, but if it was a melee match then she was confident that she had the advantage. Just like Randall had no doubt been confident in his power before their match. So it was with some trepidation, but no hesitation, that she began to stalk straight towards Poppins and rapidly closed that distance between them, “If I didn’t know any better I’d think you instigated the incident at the hotel.”

John looked up in surprise as a woman bounced down onto the planks just fifteen feet from him. He supposed she liked fighting up close just from that spit of information, and grinned appreciatively.

“Oh yeah?”

This was going to be short and brutal, shame he had to mess up a pretty face but fightin’ was fightin’ and that was what he was getting paid to-

“Wai, ‘ow much dough you ge’in for each figh’ love?” His boyish face screwed up in momentary annoyance, for the first time wondering if he was getting short changed for all the work he'd done thus far. He hadn’t really made any overtly aggressive moves as he leaned against a wall of dirt, but Cherry was unfamiliar with his power and the fact was that his weapons were all around her. Little did she know of course that two particularly choice stones about half a kg each were making their way to the surface just behind him.
