Kharessan Docks

User Image

(GCL: Season 1 [Heat B])

The docks have been central to Kharesso's commerce since the city's founding, and has continued to act as a hub for trade despite the discovery of modern and magical travel methods. The docks line the Tagra River, alternating from one side and the other. Two of the docks are dominated by an enormous wooden cog (read as: trading ship), sat square in the middle of the river.

Terrain

General: The actual fighting area is the two docks leading to the ship, and the ship itself. Participants traverse the two docks that are on each side of the ship, and stay on the ship itself. Going beyond the wharves themselves or into the river will begin the count for a ring out.

Weapons: There docks have been cleared away in preparation for the fight, but participants can still find improvised weapons on the ship. Lengths of rope, saws, mallets, wooden planks -- any of the tools needed to maintain a wooden ship while on a voyage.

Bonus Features: None.

The Karessan docks were usually a site of hustle, not to mention bustle, on any normal sunny afternoon. However on this day it was eerily quiet, with not a soul in sight as the large cog bobbed up and down in the middle of the river. That was until a loud thump rang out, followed by a wooden creak, as a young man jumped off a haphazard barrel and landed heavily on the far-right dock. Course, calling the energetic fellow a young man might have been an overstatement, he wasn’t even fifteen years old. Tall though, for his age, a solid five foot seven inches of lean and wiry Englishman, in a dirty jacket and white shirt flecked with rock and lint. He was tanned white, so obviously not a local, and he looked oddly dirty as if he’d been crawling around in gravel. Not that anyone would have mistaken him for a local anyway, with his jaunty cap and Victorian apparel he was a boy out of place and out of time. Didn’t seem to be bothering him too much though.

John Poppins raised both arms in the air in mock appraisal of his own jumping ability, spinning in a theatrical fashion as if expecting a roaring applause. Fact was, the lack of just that was a little confusing to him. Far as he knew he was participating in some sort of fighting contest, he assumed it was sort of like back-alley scrapping he’d made some bets on in the past. So where were the crowds then? Hell if he knew, still he’d been told to come here and fight the guy who he met, with a loose description of him to boot. He was going to do just that, he’d fought people for less after all, the pay-off here was way better and worth the risk. If there even was one. They didn’t know what they were getting themselves into facing him. He glanced over his arena with a casual air, for the first time appreciating the river, the wooden docks, and the wooden boat.

“******** me.”

With a long drawn out sigh, the Englishman popped open the small satchel he wore around his waist under his open jacket, feeling the rock contained there-in with his left hand in an oddly comforting manner. There was the hook end of his cane, and the sharp rocks as well, all in there. He had everything he needed, even if he had to fight in the shittiest place ever. Could be worse, he’d fought in some shitty places in the past.

There was a sharp laugh from the opposing dock. "Well, doesn't this just beat all?"

At 5'9" the approaching Darien Magnus didn't exactly tower over the youngster, though his strong stance might have you believe otherwise. In sharp contrast to his opponent, Magnus sported a thick black leather long-coat that would match some form of space pirate over a suit of anti-ballistic armor. It was clear with the stylistic decisions in his attire that he likely fancied himself as some variant of gambler, what with the red and gold accents and casino-worthy card symbolism. A black device with a clear lens was attached over his right eye, similar to a cross between an eyepatch and a monocle. His boots were armored metal monstrosities which looked absolutely absurd when he moved with them at full speed; they must weigh at least a combined total of about 30 lbs. Attached to his belt were a futuristic revolver, a foot long bowie knive, and even more technological devices.

Even more concerning would be the fully automatic assault rifle the man held at the ready, complete with a ridiculous inch and a half pile bunker attached to the front of the weapon. As though to alleviate some concern, Darien performed a quick weapon clearing demonstration for the young boy as he approached, deliberately showing him the empty chamber of the high-tech weapon. Whether or not this gesture meant anything was besides the point; the boy was clearly not from anywhere Darien was familiar and possibly didn't even know what a firearm was.

Not that anyone would confuse the bounty hunter for one of the locals either. He joined the fighting league to build his renown and his first opponent ends up being a backwater street urchin with a stick. Go figure.

There was a smirk. "Ya know kid, no one will blame you if you want to walk away before you get yourself hurt." It was clear from Darien's demeanor that he expected nothing to result from this gesture, but he'd be damned if he could sleep after demolishing some wayward pup without at least a warning.

“Wha’ the ******!” John exclaimed, upon watching his opponent stroll down the opposite dock with nothing less than a damn musket. Or at least, what looked like one, equipped with some sort of fancy bayonet. Last he checked guns were banned in the league, he thought this was supposed to be a scrapper’s tournament not a ****** execution. Was he getting set up? Had the organisers screwed him, more than they had already by forcing him to fight over water with wood at his feet? Before he had time to complain, or worry, any further his funny looking foe kindly showed that his weapon wasn’t loaded.

“So you’re usin’ I’ lik’a big knife den?” He sighed in relief. “Though’ I wa’ brown bread for’a secon’ dere.” He wasn’t really talking to his opponent as much as making observations as he stood there watching him. Course, when the guy thought he’d have a little banter with him, he couldn’t just sit there and take it.

“You takin’ tha mick, me old china?” He laughed, as his left hand slipped into his jacket and grasped a handful of stones from the small satchel around his waist. He actually opened his over-coat far enough that his enemy could see what he was doing, brushing it back western style, revealing that whatever he was doing he was taking something from a seemingly small-ish bag at left side. His hand filled with sharp spiked rocks of varying sizes, he retrieved his bounty while watching his enemy all the while, expecting him to point his gun at him at any moment and reveal he had a shot loaded after all. Then, as his hand extricated the rocks, provided he wasn’t under duress, John flicked them into the air and caught them again, giving his enemy an eyeful.

“I’m ‘ere for a proper scrap, yeah?”

Darien shrugged with a grin, still wielding the rifle down at the ready. "I like the the cut of your jib, boy." Truth be told, the he had a difficult time understanding John clearly anyway. At least the boy's overall intent was easy enough to figure out.

"Let's just get to the point then."

With that Darien took off into a charge faster than most people carrying that sort of load likely should. As he took off, something unhinged itself from the inside of his coat with an audible ~Clink, dropping a grapefruit-sized metal sphere. Instead of smashing onto the deck of the ship, this drone quickly rose to orbit the bounty hunter, its single robotic eye aglow with a piercing blue light.

Darien Magnus wasn't going to waste time. There was a lot of ship to cover and he lacked effective long-ranged weaponry without his ammunition.

One last throw, the rocks skittering into the air, though a close observation would have suggested there seemed to be far less individuals rocks than before. Then, the conflict began, as John suspected it would. The bayonet charge was a pretty standard tactic, the ship only left perhaps thirty feet of dividing space between them, and it was a straight shot toward him. Well, if he left things as they were, at any rate. With a nimble speed born of youth and a childhood spent on the streets of London as a thief, John sped leftwards with a slight stoop at full-speed simultaneous to Darien’s own run. As he moved, his right hand scooped the rock out of the air while his left hand clenched over what remained, and although his foe was fast he would quickly find that the hatch leading below deck would block his ability to charge straight at John, even if he could adjust his run quick enough to realise the Brit had set it off course.

With only a moment of observation John had made himself aware that the aft was far more cluttered than the bow of the ship. He was drawn to it because it offered him more protection if his enemy revealed he had bullets left after all, and in general John preferred a more treacherous terrain, it suited his natural gift of running through busy streets. His own short run carried him quickly to the stairs leading up to the bridge, but he ignored it at first, instead turning rightward up to 180 degrees to check his enemy’s position, while his hands clenched down hard and his body made ready to strafe leftwards, cutting off a follow up charge from his foe if he cleared the obstruction, or prepared to fire his weapon. The mast was just to his left, and would serve as a further obstruction and useful cover, should he need it, he could even jump into the cabin if it served his purposes. For now though, he wanted to check his foe’s position, to see how he dealt with John’s own speed, and because the Brit had his own attack prepared.

Johnny boy would learn fairly quickly that surprising the bounty hunter with the terrain would be... very difficult at best. The sensory implant in Darien's brain took the brunt of the workload in terms of geospacial data, allowing him to memorize and react to changes in his environment very rapidly. This did not extend to his opponent or their movements, but it was very handy when it came to not fumbling below deck like a goddamned retard.

Magnus would give the boy credit; he was certainly quick. As his opponent veered towards the aft of the ship, the bounty hunter slowed his pace to a fast jog, veering around the obstacle by stepping onto the small elevated platform surrounding the entrance below deck. Circling around the edge of the obstacle, his goals were to close the game, pressure John into melee range, while test the extent of the boy's abilities. With a slight gesture of his head, as though prompting the machine to move, the drone swiftly moved towards his opponent, attempting to change orbit to its new target. This mechanical ioun stone would focus its ceaseless gaze on John, who would feel the tingling build-up of static electricity if he simply ignored it. This wouldn't pose an immediate danger, though he might feel a harmless shock if he tried to touch the railing of the stairs or something.

No sooner did the first drone depart did a second detach itself from Darien's coat with the telltale ~Clink.

John was moving again almost as soon as he’d turned around to check his foe’s new position, which was evidently him preparing to jump up onto or over the raised platform. However, that was not before he gave the funny looking guy a taste of things to come, as he used the slight centrifugal force of turning, not to mention the element of surprise, to reflexively launch a stone the moment he turned around. His enemy seemed to have taken no particular notice of him turning, which was strange, he continued to pursue him as if he was still running away. Regardless, John span and his left hand shot out suddenly and whipped a stone into the air. Not a bunch of stones, like his enemy had just seen, but one big hefty rock weighing in at a weight of around 330 grams, of a slight oval shape that made it more like a sling stone than something one would find on the floor. That wasn’t all though, as it flew from his hand to meet his enemy’s pre-determined spot (John having seen him jumping, knowing there was little he could do in the air to dodge) it quickly reached a solid eighty miles per hour. It was like it had been shot from a sling, and it was going to be as dangerous as one as well, aimed right for his foe’s fat head, telekinetically adjusted up to a couple of inches to ensure it clocked him right on the nose, even if he tried to bend his head out the way. It probably wouldn’t knock him out, but it would break his nose or smash up his face, if it hit.

Meanwhile, John having turned to face his foe was forced to side step quickly and then turn leftward again to skitter behind the mast to his left, before running out the other side nimbly avoiding obstructions, ready to turn again to face his foe when he was ready. He hadn’t spent much time in careful observation, but certainly enough to realise there was some sort of flying metal thing around his enemy, he’d clock that with the next stone just in case it was something important.

MagnusXL Wrote:

There wasn't much thought involved. Unable to evade well due to his positioning, Darien reflexively rose his battle rifle to protect himself. A rock with twice the force of a fastball pitch would do horrible things to Darien's face, but it would do next to nothing to his battle rifle aside from scratching the s**t out of it.

"Huh. I never took you for a Psyker." While the bounty hunter was making some pretty gross and likely incorrect assumptions about the nature of the boy's powers, Psyker was also an all-encompassing term for anyone with even vaguely supernatural abilities. In either case, the bounty hunter rewarded he opponent was a toothy grin; this made things more interesting. Assuming he could catch the wiry b*****d anyway.

It might have been more prudent to focus on the 'metal thing' already tailing him.

Slowing his pace to a jog, Darien changed course as his opponent attempted to duck behind the mast, attempting to go around the other side in an attempt to cut him off. At the same time, he cocked his head slightly to indicate his recently activated drone join its brother in orbit around the Cockney rogue. Traveling at a rate of around 20 MPH on average, the drone wouldn't take long to reach the opponent, especially considering it could ignore any ground based terrain.

Assuming the drone reached Jon uninhibited, it would begin a two-foot orbit around the boy and immediately discharge a powerful shock with a loud Zaaaaap! This short-ranged arc of electricity discharged 50,000 volts over the duration of a half of a second; while this didn't have the amperage to cause any lasting damage, it would likely be enough to stun the rogue and throw him off balance, potentially toppling him to the ground and allowing the bounty hunter to close in on him.

John was moving quickly, quick enough that the first drone only caught up to him as he rounded the mast. He hadn’t stuck around to see what happened with his rock, hence why his foe was able to block the projectile so easily when he could have adjusted its flight-path. It was still an impressive feat to block with such a large object in the time the man had to react, but the Brit wasn’t really paying attention to any of that. He had just noticed something shiny in his peripheral and reflexively ran leftward at full speed, vaulting the railing and speeding up the stair-case. Despite their capacity to fly, the drones could only barely keep up with the Englishman and the one that was primed to shock him would be lucky to reach him before he cleared the top of the stairs and ran up onto the bridge. There was something about acquiring the high ground that appealed to him, even as he turned and saw the metal thing following him again.

The rock in his right hand flew across the divide with every hint of smashing into the weird little thing at high speed. One might question how John knew to direct an attack at the thing, but to be honest, he just had a fear of technology. It could have been the league’s property and he’d still have smashed the thing. Don’t even get him started on the intercom system, where the hell do they find the midgets that live inside them?

Unknown to John, he had actually thrown a rock at drone #2 as the first orbited him, suddenly spinning into view in front of him. It was difficult to know how his actions would impact the electric shock, but even if Darien climbed the stairs to get to him (having no line of sight due to the incline) he might be disappointed to find John wouldn’t be as impacted as he hoped. Surprisingly, the rock-like skin of the elementalist had a dampening effect on an already short-term spark, likely causing him to stagger momentarily at most, the surprise far worse than the actual effect. Regardless of which, John hoisted his cane out of the pouch at his side with his right hand, the three foot chunk of stone appearing as if by magic from an all-too small container. Batter up!

MagnusXL Wrote:

11MagnusXL

As the first drone was the one targeting Jon with the preparatory laser, the second drone was the only one actually administering the shock. With the drone taken out of commission before it could even close the gap, there would be no way for it to administer its tasering shock. That didn't stop the remaining orb from ionizing John with all its might like the little droid that could.

Of course, this freed up processing power for Darien, allowing him to deploy yet another drone with a telltale ~Clink!

Instead of following his fleet opponent upstairs and chasing him around the ship endlessly, the bounty hunter swiftly headed towards the open cabin. While moving forward, he simultaneously pulled a cylindrical device from his belt and lobbed it around where Jon was standing. He wasn't looking for pinpoint accuracy, which might make sense to Jonathon if he knew anything about grenade-shaped objects with a single button or trigger. For the time being however, nothing seemed to be happening with the device.

Now entering the cabin proper, he took but a moment to memorize his surroundings before a metal shutter covered his eyepiece, blacking out his view completely when he also deliberately shut his other exposed eye. If he couldn't get to John, Darien was determined to find a way to force John to come to him.

Echo Vision Wrote:

> [Echo Vision] The a small metallic sheet slides over the eyepiece to indicate that vision modes have changed. Light is completely blocked out, his eyepiece instead giving him a monochromatic false-color representation of his surroundings as the device constantly sends out sonar pulses. This vision also causes Darien to 'see' sound waves in a sense, allowing him to track otherwise invisible targets. Sonar has the added benefit of showing him an outline of the contents within relatively hollow containers. Echo Vision absolutely unnerves Darien, who uses it infrequently.

John whipped out the cane and settled into a batting stance, waiting for the little drone to spin around him again before he gave it a hefty smack with the stone weapon. He planned to hit it hard enough to knock it over the river, just for the lolz. Got to enjoy the little things, like smashing weird metal things. Wrecking another of the guy’s little robots would probably coincide with the grenade flying up into view as Darien ducked into the cabin below John. The metal capsule dropped down onto the deck to the left of the wheel, about five feet from his position. Unfortunately for John, he knew nothing about grenades, though they did technically exist in a rudimentary form in his timeline. Fortunately, it didn’t seem to be exploding immediately and as he had a natural distrust of technology anyway, he got moving again and sprinted wide around it to the other side of the bridge, while grabbing another handful of rock and getting to work. He liked having time to work with, even if losing sight of his foe was a little disconcerting.

John was going by smell and hearing as he moved, trying to work out where his enemy was from senses other than sight. If the ground had been earth he’d have had a much easier time of it, but failing to work out where he was, provided he hadn’t been blown up by a grenade in the meantime, he ran to the top of the starboard staircase and peered over to check the deck of the ship for any sign of Darien.

MagnusXL Wrote:

13MagnusXL

Coincidentally, Darien also liked having time to work. As absolutely unsettling as monochromatic sonar sight was, it was a massive advantage in his current situation. Ceiling space tended to be mostly hollow as it is also used for the structure's wiring, circulation, and plumbing. On a ship, this area was about 4-10 inches on average. This was convenient since it allowed him to both easily view obstructions and clearly see where John's feet were impacting above.

Darien smiled a little as the boy fled the grenade, though felt a tinge of irritation as yet another drone was destroyed. As John moved to the ship's starboard, the bounty hunter followed suit, never venturing far from the entrance area. This gave him a relatively shorter path than his opponent, allowing him to catch up and cut him off. For good measure, he grabbed his secondary grenade and deliberately bounced it off the ground towards the back of the ship as he moved, attempting to throw his opponent off as to his actual position with conflicting sounds.

Of course, this wouldn't be a perfect setup against an opponent with superhuman senses.

When John reached the staircase, Darien would be there to meet him. Quickly shifting to a wide stance, he would thrust his battle rifle towards the ceiling as John neared the top of the staircase. With a click of the trigger, the pile bunker was employed with the ear-shattering sound of shearing metal. The foot long metal spike wouldn't penetrate the ceiling by much, but it would be enough to leave a spike-shaped hole in John's foot an inch and a half in diameter. He didn't know what sort of defensive capabilities his opponent had, but given that the pile bunker was designed to rend steel power armor, Magnus rather liked his chances here.

It would be pretty clear at this point that the grenades were nothing more than inactive diversions. Good thing too, since Darien didn't really feel like EMP blasting himself.

John wasn’t one to go chasing after funny sounds, he tended to trust his nose. That same nose was telling him his enemy was lurking in the cabin below him, like a sneaky little s**t. Oh… look who’s talking.

The only thing that somewhat mitigated the damage about to be inflicted upon the Brit was the tireless energy of youth. John was pretty much always moving, in this case having realised Darien almost had to be in the cabin below him he began to descend the staircase. Only for a metal spike to pierce the floorboard beneath his raised foot and pierce his boot, the tip carving an inch deep hole in his heel that even his rock-like skin could prevent.

“******’ wankah.” John yelped in surprise, his foot naturally extricating itself from the situation as he thrust himself back and away from the spike back onto the bridge. He was lucky his foot wasn’t on the deck the moment it had come through, or he was ****. Then again, it wasn’t exactly as if moving around a lot wasn’t a behavioural trait for the Victorian street thief. He’d have certainly been moving a lot less if that massive metal spike had served its intended purpose though. Cheeky b***d.

The Brit hobbled backwards a step and then ripped off his boot, rubbing the solid rock in his hand for a moment as he fell on his a. It took him a moment to apply the rock dust to his wound, where it sealed tight and stopped the bleeding. He tried to listen out for his enemy during that time, though it only took him about a second to carry out his impromptu medical care. After which he’d re-acquire his boot, settle his foot and feel the pain. Enough to force him to limp a little, maybe slow him down a little as well. Well st, guess he has to get brutal.

“******’ ‘ate beatin’ tha shi’ ou’a guys wi’ dis thin’” He sighed, resting the cane over his shoulder and preparing to go beat the st out of a guy with a thing.

MagnusXL Wrote:

Darien wasn't entirely sure what John was doing above, but he easily saw the vibration as the boy stumbled backwards and fell on his a**. John wouldn't have to worry much about stepping on the spike again; the weapon would retract as soon as the attack was over, resetting itself. It didn't take much for Darien to shift forward and strike out again with the pile bunker, blasting another hole in the poor ship. He wasn't even being particularly choosy with his targets, aiming for the large mass that most recently hit the deck (e.g. John's arse).

"I mean, I guess."

Darien would have felt bad about repeatedly skewering the kid, but his bravado and excessive cursing dispelled any qualms he would have had about it. John's reprieve here was that the pilebunker had a very limited battery supply, but it didn't really have a 'cooldown' in the traditional sense. In any case, administering first aid while your opponent is able to poke at you from below wouldn't have been the bounty hunter's first strategy, but to each their own.

The message was clear: Get off the ******** roof or Darien is going to keep spear fishing.

Having spotted the metal pole being retracted John didn’t stay immobile, extracting a massive metal spike that had pierced through a thick wooden floor probably wouldn’t be a quick process, and it would definitely make noise before the thing was free and ready again. He rolled leftward suddenly and hopped onto his feet as the metal pierced the wood where he just was, stomping his boot back onto his foot as he took his cane in both hands. He hadn’t really expected the big spike to be retracted, but s**t happens. The metal spike was stuck in the ceiling again, this time it wasn't getting away unscathed as John took a golfing swing straight at it with his cane, aiming to smash it horizontally and bend the point into a hook, preventing its extraction and further use. At worse, he'd probably ruin the point and mess up the weapon.

To be honest, John was mostly confused as to how Darien was following his progress so quickly when he was in the cabin, presumably filled with all the st the captain’s quarters usually had. Big table, massive chest full of treasure, a bed, whatever else? No matter, he’d hobble over to the other side of the deck and listen to see if Darien was following him, mentally swearing all the way. From what he remembered from his cursory glance, it looked like the entrance was only on the starboard side of the ship, so he was safe from Darien coming straight out if he went down the port side. Limping a little, pissed off beyond words, the British thief jogged straight down the stairs, watching the open doorway the entire time, though he was ready for metal implements slamming through wood at any point he figured there was a good chance the guy would –have- to come out that way eventually. He either had insane hearing or was using magic or something to see through the wood, so surprising him would be a waste of time. The best he could do was be ready to beat the st out of him when he came out.

MagnusXL Wrote:

Darien felt the shock of his opponent slamming his pile bunker and felt a different sort of shock when the wiry rapscallion managed to dent the s**t out of the spike. When the mechanism didn't recoil as efficiently as it should have, Darien was forced to help pull the weapon through the ceiling with a mighty pull, showering the area with flecks of wood, dust, and debris. The hole in the ceiling wouldn't be massive, but one could easily peer through if they were standing above. Eyeing the damage done to his weapon, the bounty hunter frowned. While the pile bunker could technically function in the literal definition, it was far more likely to do damage itself further than it was to its target.

"Geez. If that don't beat all..."

John's confusion was well founded, though were inside the captain's quarters to watch Darien it would make more sense. Staying towards the wall with the entrance, the space pirate was allowed to avoid most of the furniture and accouterments purely based on likely placement; most people didn't stack all their furniture by the front door. There was -some- finagling he had to do to be sure, but not nearly enough to offset the fact that his opponent made a large sweeping arc along the ceiling to avoid a dud of a grenade.

That said, seeing as John had moved towards the port side staircase, Darien's objective was effectively accomplished. The metal shutter around his eyepiece opened, allowing natural light to enter his eyes anew. Echo vision had a tendency to creep him the ******** out, so he was glad to have his sight returned (along with his full depth perception). Stepping out from the captain's quarters, he turned to face his opponent as he reached the bottom of the stairwell, rifle held down low in both arms. There was yet another ~CLINK as the final drone was deployed.

"Nice of you to join me. The way I figure it, I'm owed a new rifle."

Despite the loss of his Pile Bunker, Darien Magnus seemed relatively calm. He may have an advantage, but he had some measure of respect for the kid who walked off that sort of wound like a man. Even though the thief was partially crippled, there was no telling what tricks he still had up his sleeve.

“Oh ma’e you are gunna regre’ da’ decision.” John spat as he casually vaulted the staircase with a wince as he landed and side-stepped to the right, putting him in a direct line with Magnus with the mast to his left. Even as he did so, he showed off some more rock throwing prowess and launched the stone in his left hand just off to Magnus’ left. It wouldn’t be immediately obvious it was off target until it magically darted rightward further and slammed into the outside of the cabin just in front of Magnus, bouncing off at an awkward angle that would see it threaten the guy from his left side, namely square on his chin. At the speed it was flying it would probably feel like taking a haymaker to the chin from a welterweight, nothing to shrug at, but as always it was mostly a distraction as John burst forward, cane in both hands like a great sword, crook at the business end, ready for almost anything, except hidden flamethrowers.

No one was ready for hidden flamethrowers.

The telekinetic stone found its mark, slamming into the left side of the bounty hunter's chin. Magnus had good instincts when it came to avoiding projectile weapons, but his reaction time was simply too slow to avoid an unexpected change in trajectory at high speeds like that. The most he could do was brace himself and tilt his head slightly as the stone came into contact, effectively preventing the rotation of his skull from knocking him unconscious. Still, a wicked bruise began to form along his left chin and cheek, darkening immediately.

Magnus would later acknowledge that he probably deserved that.

"That was your freebie, kid." Darien's tone was a touch less arrogant and jovial than it was before. He would have rubbed his jaw, but he was put on the defensive; his battle riffle was brought upwards horizontal with his body and ready to defend himself as John came in. His knees bent slightly, adopting a stance with a lower center of gravity to better receive potential attacks from his opponent.

If John was particularly observant, he might note that one of the drones began training its ceaseless gaze in his general direction, though it continued to orbit its master. In either case, it was clear that he was being watched.

As John charged his enemy down he only really had one thing to contend with. He had to get past the point of the guy’s weapon, achieve that and he’d be fine. He had a pretty long weapon of his own, but even with his ability to cheat and swing the heavy lump of stone quicker than should have been possible it was no-where near as nimble as a spear, or bayonet in this case. He could however overpower the weapon pretty easily, which was his intent as he closed in to five feet with his right foot forward and swept his cane upper right to lower left across the front of the rifle’s barrel, aiming to momentarily hook it and drag the point to Darien's right so he could step in. Not reliant on a sharp implement at the end of his own weapon, John was more than comfortable with getting in real close, and with his left foot forward, provided the bayonet was momentarily off line to allow him to get into Darien’s guard, the cane would come hurtling back into the scene threatening an upper-cut to the pirate’s face, with enough force to shatter his jaw. If he stepped backwards, John’s target would actually change as he exploited the slight distance to instead ram the crook side-on into the guy’s throat. Though chances were something unexpected would happen, and he’d be forced to react accordingly.

Suddenly, a crazed expression took over Darien's calm if not stoic face. The skin peeled back like a human pumpkin. His teeth flashed bright white, gums exposed from how far his lips had curled back. As the cane was swung and begun to touch that massive rifle, Magnus had a flash of insane irreverence come over him. You could see the white of his eyes- and the red of the flesh beside it. A hot sweat came over his exposed flesh.

All John would likely catch before it happened, was a twinkle in the rifle wielding man's eye.

*ACCELERATOR*

-Accelerator: As a last resort, Darien can activate Accelerator. This implant removes the limiter on his nervous system to greatly increase his physical ability. Due to going over their normal limits by releasing the body's restraints, it puts large strain on the bounty hunter's body and can not be used very often. Once the limiter is enabled again, Darien Magnus suffers negative effects based on how long the function was utilized. If Darien Magnus activates Accelerator more than once a fight, it progress to the next severe step as though every round were used consecutively; there is no resetting this penalty. [1 Post] Darien suffers intense pain throughout his body. While this doesn't completely disable him, it is highly distracting and prevents him from doing tasks that require finite motor skills for a post. [2 Posts] Darien suffers muscle weakness, losing 50% of his physical strength and mobility for two posts. [3 Posts] Darien drops to his knees and can hardly move for five minutes. This is the limit. If he hasn't won the fight by now, he can no longer continue fighting and is forced to forfeit. [PNS Connection]: Vagus Nerve

Rapidly, far more rapidly than normally possible, Magnus would suddenly raise his left hand - though not to try and halt his right arm's horizontal movement which was the opening grabber John had desired. But if not to guard or defend, then for what reason?

Well of course.. there was only one reason.

Scorch Spewer: Mounted on Darien's left wrist, this bracer houses a hidden flamethrower. The superheated gas within shoots out to three meters in a straight line about six inches in diameter and burns hotter closer to the launcher. Within one meter the flames burn at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit within two meters, and tapers off at 800 degrees Fahrenheit at max range. There is enough ammunition inside Scorch Spewer to fire it for ten seconds (two posts).

... extra close range bath of flames. Thanks to the mental implant that allowed Darien to give mental inputs to his armaments, this was a breeze! Well, metaphorically anyway. For John, it'd feel more like a particularly agonizing barbecue.

Perhaps John would persevere through being cooked to uppercut Magnus' jaw with the cane. That was possible. A regrettable flaw.

Looking to have achieved peak orgasm, Darien's face was riddled with ecstasy - tongue out of his mouth and eyes rolled back in his skull as he bent over backwards and howled "THROUGH FIRE, JUSTICE IS SERVED!!!!" Darien Magnus groaned with pleasure, spewing the hidden spewer maliciously across John's body as his wrist swiveled his hand in patterns to spew the stream all across John's upper body. Maybe John was the sort who didn't mind being cooked like sirloin steak and would power through becoming a burn ward victim to continue his cane salvo. Stranger things have happened!

Fortunately for John, he did not need to avoid the flamethrower hand, because his hooking motion had been 100% successful and the point of the weapon was off-line. What did that mean? Well it meant he had stepped past Darrien’s guard and subsequently was launching his rock hook into the cyborg pirate’s face. His arms naturally blocked the stream of fire, though his jacket would promptly set on fire under the effect of the stream of flame, his rock-like skin beneath resisted the heat over such a short period, and all the while his hook was on a collision course with the pirate’s head, two hands launching the solid lump of rock forward with enough force to cave in his skull. Without backpedalling and putting all his hope in the scorch spewer (AKA the most rigged weapon in GCL, the man who allowed such a weapon into a non-lethal tournament must have been wholly incompetent) the pirate would earn himself only the token destruction of John’s favourite jacket before suffering a debilitating blow.

Had he utilized his formidable weapon in any other fashion except when about to get brained by an incoming cane, he might well have realised its full potential. Unfortunately, its user was a fool with no respect for the power he had hidden under his wrist. A regrettable flaw.
