THE OASIS INN

. . .brought to you by Cloud Haven.

A homey inn nestled in a small suburban town, the Oasis Inn has been rented out wholesale to the GCL for fighting purposes. As such, the entire building is open to participants.

Terrain

General: The two story building has a number of rooms: a kitchen, dining room, common room, and several closets and pantries on the first floor. The second floor has a half-dozen suites situated along a single hallway, each one complete with a bedroom, bathroom, and a small "living room" with a couch and television, akin to a high end hotel suite.

Weapons: Anything you can imagine in a bed and breakfast inn, barring things against the GCL rules (e.g. loaded firearms).

Bonus Features: Heavy snowfall prevents people from fighting outside. Leaving the inn will start the Ring Out countdown.

The front portal jingled with muted sleigh bells, marking the entrance of the red-faced thief from the frigid exterior, tracking snow in with her boot spikes behind her. A thickly-woven mat bore the brunt of her insistent stamping, dislodging the snow and ice in the doorway, before shuffling along to make her way into the common room. It had the air of a mock hunting lodge, with exposed rafters dividing the high ceiling, dominated on one end by a gigantic fireplace and on the other by several large taxidermied animals in various poses of aggression.

The vague scent of tobacco lingered, but the furnishings were clean enough for the picky rogue's taste. She drew closer to the roaring fire, shaking her white, cropped locks free from her damp hood and ran her fingers through them wearily. Another fight. Another enclosed locale for her to be manhandled in. At least this one had hiding locations... and a distinct lack of party confetti, or snow, constantly falling onto her face.

Delicate fingers tugged at the leather buckle across her chest, pinging free with a small 'clack' of brass, eliciting a sigh of relief. For a few brief moments, Unity was at peace.

It was fleeting, however... with a dissatisfied murmur, she unsheathed Blur from her left hip, and striding purposefully across the gallery, took up position next to a particularly fearsome specimen of a grizzly rearing up... her own colorations blending seamlessly into the nearby fur in exact detail.

Not a single sound escaped her, the rogue's preternatural muting so effective that her breathing was likely only detectable to the most sensitive recording devices. Thus, she waited for the opponent to arrive.

With Unity's intense near-silence, shuffles and thumps of movement through heavy snow could be faintly heard at the front door soon, even from the distance to the taxidermied grizzly bear. At least one person in this match hadn't yet gotten the hint that a peaceful and idyllic bed-and-breakfast called for a bit of quiet.

The door opened again, this time signaling the entry of someone less immediately-impressive. Instead of a tall white-haired bombshell with fashion sense, the security camera(s) would see a short woman in 1) a thick purple overcoat, 2) tracksuit pants, and 3) a bright red boxing helmet that was definitely frumping up her wavy blonde hair; bzzzt, three strikes, you're out of the running for most fashionable. Once the door closed, she immediately hung up her coat on the nearby coat rack's--'Left, right, or center?'--left peg, displeasedly muttering in German about the snow. Underneath the overcoat, she wore a military vest--probably from a surplus store--a purple turtleneck underneath that, and a pair of strange metallic gauntlets. As she pulled back her hands from hanging up her coat, the light in the inn caught on her gauntlets in such a way as to highlight the symbol engraved on the back of one hand.

Wendelin turned and sauntered forwards, towards the room with its hearth and taxidermied animals. Sneakers squeaked across the hardwood.

She could sense the faint 'hum' of background radiation surrounding her, outside of her personal space where she was electing for the weak force to be silent. Something 'sounded' a bit weird, but as she stopped walking just beyond the entrance to the common room, Wendelin mentally chalked it up to the presence of the animals. Just like living beings, but dead and frozen, with their radioisotopes never being refreshed. As close as she was--five meters to the nearest one--she could hear the differences between each kind of isotope. The changed-over-time proportions made them a little bit 'off', compared to the makeup of living beings. That's probably what it was, she rationalized to herself, without even noticing her opponent standing right up against one of them.

Whoever made these animals knew what they were doing. Wendelin particularly liked the black panther and tiger.

Unity suppressed the urge to smile at the expense of the loud German's oblivious looks, by frowning at her absolutely repulsive style of dress, equaling out into a neutral twitch at the corner of her mouth. While not entirely fixable without stripping the woman naked and starting over, the rogue did have a partial salve for that trainwreck of an ensemble.

Picking a spot on the hardwood just in front of Wendelin, a single speck of brown lint turned black... and from it spread a devouring plague, that rapidly began to leech the color from the well-appointed common room... and with it, the two fighters within. As color bled away, only shades of grey remained, extinguishing the clashing hues of the mismatched gear, and gradually plunging the entire room from the present into the lithograph of some early 30's gentleman's lodge.

As the crest of the color-draining wave washed over Unity, she altered her camouflage seamlessly with its progress, taking shallow breaths that she had practiced many a time to remain hidden, keenly observing her quarry to determine the best time to strike. Her use of her unique talent would reveal she was present... but not knowing where instilled fear, uncertainty, and most importantly, disorientation in the target.

She would move when the time was right. For now, Unity watched, and waited patiently.

A bit of motion at the bottom of her field of view. Wendelin glanced down to see the spreading blackness across the floor, which was immediately followed by rapid steps backwards with her fists raised to shoulder level. For all Wendelin knew, a spread of blackness heralded the arrival of some undead fighter to raise out of the floor, like in some decent but forgettable fantasy novel. The desaturation still washed over her within seconds, but she felt nothing wrong...just the new grayscale around her. Interesting.

On high alert from the scare, Wendelin now knew that her opponent should surely be here. Knees slightly bent, fists uncurling...she continued looking at the taxidermied animals. Adrenaline pumped through her blood. Something really was wrong over there. The weak interaction just didn't 'sound' right, over there-ish. Was her opponent actually one of the animals, just posing? No, with this dark heralding, it could be probably one of their skeletons. Or something else. Wendelin focused on 'listening' to the weak force as her eyes scanned the creatures. The ferociously-posed squirrels on the tree stump, in particular, seemed to blend in.

Something was wrong, and it had to do with the animals, but Wendelin just couldn't tell what. Not unless she inspected more closely to know the exact compositions of every last radioisotope, but she didn't feel like wrestling an undead panther quiiiite yet.

The fireplace crackled. In the tension, after Wendelin had stopped stepping back, it made the most noise out of everything in the room.

Ventriloquism would definitely have come in handy in this situation, and the rogue made a mental note to take lessons in the art at some indeterminate future date. As it was, the brawler's eyes remained generally fixated in her direction, and she was beginning to suspect that the woman's intense stare saw more than just what was ahead of her. A better distraction was needed, but options that did not involve revealing Unity's location were quite limited.

With careful concentration of her own, the white-haired thief tracked the movement of her quarry's eyes, roughly estimating the focus of their gaze, and waited until it had swept past her to the squirrels further down. In the interim, the hues of the room continued to fall victim to her powers, spreading out to encompass the entirety of the common area, the hall, and bleeding well into the adjacent atrium and restaurant opposite the entry. It swept up the walls and roof, until everything was black, grey, and white.

The tense calm lasted only a moment longer.

A particularly lively snap of the logs in the fireplace masked the sound of slicing air, as a serrated dagger-blade of jet-black obsidian whipped towards Wendelin, the rogue's expertise hurling the weapon with but a flick of the wrist... followed closely by the mass of the rearing grizzly coming to life in a blur of motion.

15, perhaps 20 feet separated them... but the element of surprise was not to be underestimated... and even less so the explosive power of Unity's thighs. Further adding to the confusion, the wily thief's camouflage began to shift again, attempting to take on the general grain of the walls and floor, though it was not nearly as convincing and instead just made her textures appear to be crawling nauseatingly across her body. While the dagger went high, aimed for the easy target of the center torso, Unity herself shot low, her right hand drawing Contrast from her hip as she went. The hardwood splintered under her spiked heels, the armored boots providing the needed purchase on the polished boards to execute a devastating combo.

Whilst the dagger forced deflection or avoidance above, her hips twisted, and body skidding abruptly, her left foot bent and dug in to whip her forward momentum into a sweeping low kick with her right to the brawler's forward calf, carving shavings from the oak as she went.

Though Wendelin may not have had the best reflexes on the continent, the flood of non-color had raised her guard. She already knew that something was wrong, off in the direction of the animals, and now, her sharp attention on the weak force paid off. A second, maybe. But she 'heard' a faint bolt, a smidge of carbon-14, in the instant before her eyes reflexively looked towards it. Granted, this happened with the dark glint in her near-peripheral vision coinciding with a fireplace crackle, which prevented Wendelin from responding with something more than instinct: she flinched.

But that was enough. A tiny little fast-flying thingie, it was like hearing a mosquito's buzzzzz all of the sudden. She flinched. Anyone not expecting a mosquito would flinch. Specifically, her forearms came a few inches closer together, her left moving up so that her hand would be at chin level, her and right coming down to...swat, block, deflect, whatever her reflex told her to do. The knife would hit her gauntlet, and the obsidian edge would embed into it by a fraction of an inch. A projectile at center torso, with Wendelin's hands already at shoulder level, allowed mere twitches to stop impending doom.

But more importantly, something else raced her way, not as fast as a flicked knife, but fast. And she gave a brawler's response; her other (left) arm snapped down at the blur of definitely the opponent now.

There wasn't a lot Wendelin could do about the kick, which was happening at the same time as her fist, but Unity wouldn't have much leverage to work with, standing on one leg with a heel in the ground and committed to a sweeping kick. Said kick would definitely sweep Wendelin's leading right foot, perhaps exactly when twenty pounds of gauntlet broke a clavicle. Even by the standards of German punctuality, Unity was right on time for her fist appointment.

Unity would have been slightly offended at the implication that her foot-long daggers were tiny - however, the fact that Blur had been stopped cold by a gauntlet weighing about 20 times its mass remained unquestionable. In this respect, it was dwarfed soundly, the unequal impact sending the blade ricocheting off to the right before sticking, quivering, into a well-built oak shelf by the wall.

So much for the element of surprise.

Unity had gone low for a kick, but the quick reaction of Uranium Cranium elicited a slight adjustment in her arrival. While too committed to the sweep to cancel or stop in any meaningful way, that momentum could be used to slightly different effect. As her right leg whipped around, she dropped her left leg, folding it under her at the knee, turning the leg sweep into a clattering baseball slide spike-first into the brawler's shin. Her torso leaned back at the waist, drawing her right arm up defensively across the chest...

...and at the point of impact, a thick spear of hard, brightly glowing light blossomed into being from her hand. Braced into the front of her left shoulder, and steadied by the right as she slid in on the waxed floor, the weapon rammed upward into the German's gut, bypassing the attempted interception at waist-level entirely.

The rogue's shifting patterns settled a bit meanwhile, blending her in partially with the grey-washed flooring, making it rather difficult to actually look at her directly.

Wendelin had reacted without any analysis of her opponent's incoming attack, so she definitely didn't expect a spear of light, and had no time to react to its sudden appearance at the point of impact anyway. Her bulletproof vest, sadly, protected against bullets, not lower-velocity spears. As the light pierced her abdomen, her only saving graces were the slight backwards motion of her torso from snapping her left arm down, and the beginning of a flinching reflex again. A loud grunt, a sharp and intense pain, the beginnings of colorless blood flowing. The spear had pierced below the left edge of her ribcage and cut through a few inches of flesh out to the edge of her waist; she might have gone unscathed had she more of an hourglass figure.

As if she weren't already high-strung.

Deliberately dropping forward without delay, Wendelin buckled her knees, diving into her opponent's vague form to straddle her--the spear would just slide along her waist in the bloody shallow flesh groove now, not that she was thinking that way on the helluva drug adrenaline. Her fist would still be outstretched, still going for somewhere around Unity's upper torso, and now with her entire falling weight behind it. At the same time, her right gauntlet swept in from the side, an imprecisely aimed slap to the head--probably harder to dodge while bent back and pretty much down on the ground. The blurring made it hard to see what was going on, but as soon as Wendelin needed to swat like this at Unity's head specifically, her mind simply stopped silencing radiation and the swat went somewhere around the 'loudest' chorus of calcium and strontium-90.

Many warriors kept their cool; Wendelin's was now out-the-window and taken over by the instinct of OH NO IS STAB AND AMBUSH QUICK FIGHT FIGHT DON'T DIE

=The Looks That Kill=

The plan had not survived contact with the enemy, but while her opponent fell into a panic, Unity's face remained fairly neutral, strained only with the physical effort of their altercation. Like Wendelin, though, the rogue's actions went mostly by practiced instinct rather than any further elaborate plan.

That heavy plutonium gauntlet drove down the back of her torso as she lay on her left leg and hip, glancing off her shoulder pauldron and scraping her back through the leather with a nasty bruise before smashing into the hardwood... and locking out her escape from two avenues. The encirclement threatened completion from the brawler's right, so Unity twisted left, driving the readied Contrast with overhand grip directly into the shoulder socket, exposed as it was from the armpit.

It would not stop the already-moving arm... but it would seriously inhibit its further use. A brief blink to clear her eyes corresponded to the tensing of her left leg, readying to use what purchase it had on the torn-up floor to slide herself backward...

... and then the room went black. For Wendelin, it would go black, and white. No. Too black... and too white. For where the dagger Contrast stabbed, it laid its curse upon the victim - a hyper-contrast of the environment, so sharp in its relief that simple perception of depth seemed to span entire gulfs of space, and over-exaggeration of every movement. In this was Unity's only salvation entrusted.

When light began to filter back in through a sickening haze, with it came color... and the realization that she had blacked out from the absurdly-weighted gauntlet clipping her jaw. For good or ill, Contrast was still secure in her hand... but the calm certainty of her position had evaporated. With a desperate scramble, the white-haired thief tried to find her feet.

At this point, as soon as adrenaline and human instincts stopped working, it was unlikely that the German would stay conscious for more than a few seconds. A couple of stab wounds weren't fatal, but Wendelin was a brawler, not Rambo. It wasn't even about the blood loss, since there hadn't been enough time to lose almost any; the shock should put her out. But that wasn't the question right now. The question was: was this extra layer of visual distraction just a side effect of something, or a deliberate choice with the expectation that this one, surely, will be the one that stops her?

The left strike swept down across...something, getting only partial purchase before hitting the floor, and the right one knocked on...something. The best news about that last bit, though, came from the result of Wendelin's diving down in combination with that clip of the jaw--there was nowhere that her right arm, around the elbow area, could come to rest except for across Unity's neck. After all, her arm was suddenly unresponsive, and the rest of Wendelin's body would trap it there. Extremely painfully to Wendelin due to Contrast in her shoulder, mind you, but it did so.

And that was why this third layer of visual distraction wouldn't much help, even if the first one began to disintegrate. Having dove onto her target, Unity would have to get out from under Wendelin's weight, while at the same time, Wendelin knew exactly where her target was even if her eyes returned nonsense. An orchestra of strontium-90 and calcium playing directly in front of her face, a target that she could feel from her right arm; how could a brawler, the fighting style that had to get familiar with the term "ground and pound" pretty much on Day 1, still not get it right with those indicators? These facts didn't reach Wendelin on much of a conscious level, as PANIC directed her, but they made the difference.

The left gauntlet pulled back to punch the now-basically-invisible, yet still obvious, target. Repeatedly. In the face. Ground and pound, the way Wendelin knew how to dispose of someone as fast as fight-or-flight instinct wanted, the entire point of diving someone onto the floor and straddling them, the position that made it a nontrivial task for the target to get back on their feet. If Unity's salvation were to be Wendelin acting disoriented for as long as the blackout lasted, well...

Hey, as a consolation prize, Unity was about to get some shiny new plutonium dental fillings!

Unity was learning a lesson today that was just the culmination in the latest of a series of serious setbacks - Metahumans don't fold like the average joe. Any single one of her strikes thus far would have placed the momentum of a fight in her favor, inflicting serious pain and trauma in sensitive locations, followed by the shock of sudden blood loss. But barring that, the most effective thief or assassin was one that avoided combat altogether. She knew her craft well, but never before had she been exposed to an arena setting where the enemy knew she was coming... and furthermore boasted ability similar to, or surpassing her own.

The only fortunate part of her blackout was that she had already been mostly prone to begin with, thus at least avoiding braining herself on the hardwood. The unfortunate part was that Wendelin was riding several syringes of epinephrine, and was pretty hell-bent on breaking Unity's teeth before passing out.

She succeeded. The rogue's eyes blinked open a split-second before the heavy fist made contact, and initially, all Unity felt was a sudden flood of warmth in her mouth. She tried again to withdraw, drawing up her legs sharply by driving her armored right knee up into the German's groin from behind, and then kicking with her left that was pinned below her, but only managed to scoot herself an inch or two.

That was just enough to take the second punch directly on the point of the jaw, and sweet darkness embraced her again. A nasty, cartilagenous 'crunch' accompanied it, probably fractured and dislocated in the same blow. Her body fell properly limp this time around, slowly drooling crimson onto the floor. The medics were going to have a hell of a job after this one.
