BLOODY TRENCHES

One one of Gaia's many forgotten battlefields, two armies carved out their campaigns into the earth beneath their feet and laid waste to one another. The conflict and those who forgot it have faded into the mists of Gaia's history, but the scars remain: long, deep gouges dug into the earth, and stretches of flattened, gray wastes.

Terrain

General: The fighting area is a long stretch of trench, approximately 100' from end to end. The trench itself is eight feet deep and approximately 12 feet across from inner wall to inner wall. The walls are bare, hard-packed dirt, and the floor is made up of wooden slats. There is a 1-meter deep, ramped alcove every three meters, once used by sharp-shooters to catch scouts across No Man's Land, which participants can use to get out of the trench more easily.

Weapons: Weapons are common in the trenches. Rusted entrenching tools, bayonets, and empty rifles and pistols can be found half-buried in the muddied floor.

Bonus Features: The Ring-Out Count has been double from TEN to TWENTY in order to allow fighters to leave and enter the trench for repositioning purposes.

The gnawing feeling of deja vu overwhelmed any sort of disgust at the somber surroundings. Someone had taken great care to restore the freshly abandoned look of this ancient battleground, and that in and of itself was unsettling. Unity ambled once again down the worn, muddy planks flooring the trench, taking on the mottled browns and grays of the tortured clay almost absentmindedly.

Contrast and Blur slid easily into her grasp, their blades catching the sun for a brief moment before taking on the same muted colors as the rest of her. Unlike her other matches, this time she would not be stalking any humanoid, and that too was foreboding. Where did one stab a creature that didn't keep its meat where it ought to be?

She couldn't answer that, and frankly, the girl was no assassin - she didn't really want a definite answer. Plan B would have to suffice.

She paced the entire length of the trench forwards and back, obscuring her faint but rather distinct tracks into a jumble of contrary directions, mulling over a strategy the whole way. Only when she was properly satisfied did she take up position near the center of the unsightly excavation, her coloration making her nigh indistinguishable from the soil wall behind her. Thus situated, she waited for her opponent to arrive.

Hal arrived shortly after his opponent had taken to hiding in the trench. He walked bipedally as was customary and traversed the top ledge of the trench, peering down into the battlefield but not yet entering it. There was little to see in the trench, just walls of packed earth and an occasional old weapon sticking up from the ground around the wooden slats placed at the bottom. The scent of the trenches was a strong mixture of exposed earth, iron oxide, and a hint of blood spilled in times long past. He didn't detect any scent that would give his opponent away, but that was expected when dealing with a thief. They were adept at hiding their scents as well as other traces of their existence.

Hal knew a little bit about Unity. She had been a competitor last season, and he had watched all of her fights. The one that stood out the most to him had been her bout with that wolverine brute. He could sympathize with being a small individual matched against a much larger opponent, being of such a diminutive stature himself. Not that Unity was tiny, but against the likes of Wolv, most people would seem small. Hal had been pleased with Unity's victory over the beast.

He did notice all the faint footprints scattered everywhere, making it appear as though a parade had come through here. That didn't matter. Her camouflage was brilliant, but he could see her anyway. He could see heat, and unless she could hide her own body heat, the reds and yellows of her form were a beacon. He could also make out two daggers, one in each hand, owing to their difference in temperature from her and her surroundings. Her other items though, unless they bulged outward, would go unseen due to being in a close enough proximity to her body to pick up her own temperature. He could also see, in the walls of the trench, small heat signatures that marked where the recording equipment was hidden.

Hal dropped down into the trench, landing softly near the wall opposite where Unity was hidden. He stood with the earthen wall to his back and stared in Unity's direction, ears pricked forward. He appeared to be waiting.

Once again her stealth had failed her. She could see it in the way the strange creature stalked her from the upper precipice. Her fingers tightened on her daggers, but made no other outward sign that she was aware of the beast observing her. It was only when he dropped into the trench opposite her that the thief reacted.

The visual camouflage rolled off of her, draining away to reveal the black plates of her combat armor, and the shock of white that dominated her short-cropped hair. The corner of her mouth twitched into a passing smirk.

"You're an ugly one, aren't you?

Verbal wounds cut as well as any blade, and the attractive girl bit with both. Without warning, she stomped forward onto her left foot, both her hands ramming ahead, as if to stab the strange quarry that was clearly almost ten feet away... the daggers blossoming with light, closing the gap in an instant. Where there had been but a foot or less of steel, a 'sheath' of glowing magic enveloped them, mirroring the wedge-like implements in a preponderance of equally sharp steel-like light-glass. By the time the rogue was completing the dual thrust, the dagger-lances had expanded to a tapering 12 feet in length, pressing forward into the only place they could continue - into and through HAL's abdomen, and beyond into the packed earth of the trench.

It was unclear where any vital point was on the strange amalgamation of flesh and machinery, but it was a safe bet that it would hurt... and the stunted dragon could hardly be expected to effectively retaliate when it was nailed to the clay. Sadly, Unity had never been concerned with playing fairly... and in such an enclosed space, she would take the generous target when offered without reservation.

The rogue did away with her camouflage and made a quip about Hal's appearance. He didn't react to the words. He didn't care if others found him to be ugly. The Gaian Combat League was ninety-nine things, but a beauty contest wasn't one of them. He didn't allow himself to be distracted and was watching his opponent carefully for any sign of an attack. When it came, in the form of her thrusting her daggers forward, he was ready to react. Light was instant but a physical being's movements were not, and he rolled to his right when he saw an attack coming, regaining his feet as the two beams of solid light penetrated the earthen wall where he'd been standing, blasting out a spray of fine clay particles. He was quite interested in the solid light that this woman was able to create, and it was a pity that he would have no opportunity to study them.

The battle had officially started now. Hal pressed his metal-tipped ears back against his head to lessen the chances of one of them getting clipped off, and his secondary, translucent pair of eyelids came down to shield his eyes from dirt or other contaminants. These actions were done quick as a blink, and he dropped down to four legs and dashed at Unity. Two strides covered the distance and he would then come up on two legs again, taking a ball of mud with him, which he would fling at the bridge of Unity's nose as he hopped back and to the side. He was testing to see how she would react. Of course, he was prepared to take action should any part of any of his movements get interrupted.

The golden blades disintegrated into ephemeral dust as Unity retracted her knives, their bulk no longer of use to her. The creature rolled about like a dog or some other middling predator, and the best way to fight one was to get up in its face. Dropping to all fours aided Hal's speed and agility, but in this cramped trench, all the rogue needed was two strides of her own to be bearing down on him.

As he surged up from the trench floor, one 'hand' clutching a wad of mud, she met him midway, her armor-plated knee coming up to check the strange pseudodragon squarely on the jaw. A fair amount of force and dedication was behind this strike, as it was a natural extension of her dash to close into melee - and it was likely that her momentum would carry her atop or alongside Hal as he sprawled one way or another. Blur warded her at neck height, her left arm thrown before her, to help lever over the beast when they inevitably tipped, and rest on his throat - while Contrast remained out at her right side, ready to begin skewering Hal's hide as soon as they hit the dirt.

Hal's opponent didn't wait for him to finish his attack, and dashed in to try to catch him in the face with a knee. As he was in the process of rising up with his glob of mud, it was a simply motion to bring his arm inward and take the hit on his forearm. He felt a jolt but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. The force of it did cause him to release the dirt before it could be thrown. The woman was trying to knock him backward and he went with this momentum, as resisting it would only cause him more harm. It was instinctive to him to draw his legs in when it seemed he might be pinned, and that's what he did, pulling his legs between himself and his opponent in what had been informally deemed the "cat guard" by some of the GCL. Normally he would use this position to slice an opponent's belly into mush, but Unity had armor on so that interfered with that plan. No matter, he would find another way to draw her blood. But not at this moment.

As he pulled his legs in, he activated his levitation to slow his fall, and then to flip them so that Unity was on the gravity side of the tumble. He kicked out hard with his legs to slam Unity on her back on the ground and at the same time propel himself away. If successful, he would land two meters away and then stand there waiting for Unity to make another move, turning his left shoulder toward her.

Unity was already flipping over the far side of the diminutive construct when she realized that things weren't going according to plan, even if the digimon had taken his own forearm to the face at the point of her knee like a champ. They had tipped over as expected, Hal's claws raking ineffectually against the tight weave of her underarmor and laminate plates alike - and then kept flipping. Not having time to surmise exactly what had caused gravity to fail her, the rogue's arms pulled inward, her right locking briefly behind the knees of the beast that was now on top of her, and the other reflexively pointing the dagger in her hand away so she wouldn't accidentally fall on it.

Breath gasped out from her lungs as she landed back-first across the boards - and her right arm fell away, having completed its split-second present to the shifty troublemaker as he attempted to escape his clever maneuver. Light once more blossomed in the space near the rogue, but its steel-like strength was applied more subtly than any mere blade. 'Twixt the tensed, bent lengths of the pseudo-dragon's legs shimmered a pair of unyielding restraining bars, nearly two inches in diameter in the rod, and secured by equally strong bands wrapping around thigh and calf, binding each respective leg to itself in their bent position.

Deprived of the ability to expand them, presumably Hal would strain his legs suddenly to no avail before tipping off the recovering thief hilariously like a dictator's statue in a revolution. She aided this process by propping herself to her right elbow and rolling over after a forceful inhale, then pulling her own legs in to regain a half-crouching stance, with Blur in her left swooping in to begin stabbing the chimera's left torso, while she planted her right knee in his stomach to keep him pinned should he begin to disobey gravity again... or simply scramble away.

As Hal tried to jump away, he found that he could not move his legs in such a manner. That would be because of the bars of light now entwined around his legs. This would be rather annoying, but he would have to deal with it until it hopefully dissipated on its own.

But he would not topple. The thief could have chopped off his legs and he would still be quite mobile. The moment he realized his jump failed, his levitation caught him so that he was hovering there in the air, a couple of inches off the ground for the moment but still right-side-up. He would have begun to levitate away, but his opponent was up in a crouch and trying to impale him again. As she came in toward him, he moved to her right side while twirling in a clockwise fashion. His left wing would sweep aside any limbs or blades that tried to pursue him, and his right wing flared out to knock her in the back of the head. Completing the action would bring him behind the rogue, and he would immediately levitate up and away from the melee range of the woman, only half-facing her direction. His legs were still bound, of course, but none of his actions required the use of those limbs.

Ah. The magic of flight. No less interesting because of the apparent irrelevance of the wing-like structures on Hal's back, he floated mid-air like some Indian guru mastering the spiritual foci of the world. Remarkable, even, if one had the temperament to admire such a thing... and was not concerned with sticking twelve inches of steel into them.

Though focused on a single-minded desire to disable the elusive hybrid, Unity exemplified one of the key features of humanity: adaptability. For all her superhuman gifts, the elements that kept her grounded in reality also lent her the ability to modify her plan on the fly, adjusting to new circumstances as they arose. It was trivial, then, to realize that Hal continued to thumb his metaphorical nose at gravity, and had floated out of reach following her roll. With him still close to the ground, she might have simply pursued him, dashing from kneeling to standing to run him down. But as the creature spun in place, lashing out at the rogue that was no longer in range, a more sly idea wound its way to the fore.

Momentarily re-attaching her knives to their magnetic sheathes along her thighs, Unity liberated a length of coiled silk rope free from the back of her right hip, her expert hands tying a simple sliding knot onto the end as she started after the now-ascending birdman. With a spinning wind-up, she leapt up under him, looping the rope about the frozen crook of his restrained legs, and yanking it tight with her return to earth, pulling her entire body weight into the crouching tug. Her right foot pressed the resilient rope underheel, pinning it long enough to pull a steel spike from her belt and with a quick twist of the head, stake the rope to the hard-packed clay.

If Hal wanted to sail, she'd fly him like a kite.

Hal had been slightly disoriented after the tumble with the rogue. He could have sworn she was right there behind him, but when he twirled to catch her with his wings, he saw that she was several feet away and far out of range. This was a bit of relief to him, as it allowed him to levitate up and take a breather, and perhaps try to remove this damned light rod that was making his legs nearly useless.

He was nearly out of the trench already, and he was taking the opportunity to look around the big gash in the ground so as to form a new plan. It didn't escape his notice that Unity had sheathed her daggers and retrieved a new item, which was a length of rope that she swiftly knotted. Hal brought his arms up near his head, but saw that the rope was going lower, and caught around his foot. He was jerked downward but only lost a couple of feet of altitude in this manner. He was still floating, but now he was attached to a rope that was summarily staked to the ground. This prevented him from going any higher. That was fine, he was as high as he needed to be. The edges of his wings sharpened, and he curled up and then twirled, running the length of his wing along the rope and slicing through it. Then he immediately went and landed on the nearest trench ledge, rolling once to get out of the eyesight of his opponent down on the bottom. He listened and watched for her, while being mindful not to exceed the ring-out timer that had begun. He slipped off the loop of rope that had remained attached to his foot, and then tried to remove the bars of light around his legs. He pulled at them, and tried to twist them, and when that didn't work, he tried to pry them free with his claws. When that still didn't work, he resorted to gnawing on them, trying to crush them with his teeth. If he couldn't remove them and they didn't disappear on their own, he would have to suck it up and continue the fight like this.

The rope went taut as Hal reached the length of his tether, jerking him some as the constructs around his legs abruptly disintegrated into golden dust. The wily thief knew well he would not remain so for long if left to his own devices, and so she capitalized on the snare with vigor.

The silk rope she used was a truly expensive piece of equipment, braided tightly of countless fibers that were meant to withstand the coarse friction of granite precipices and jagged crags without snapping or untoward fraying. Though sharp, the scrappy machine dragon would have trouble severing it in a single swipe, or even several for that matter. And while it held, Unity gripped it with both arms, and pulled, bringing all her body weight and strength into it, dipping low, before catching up the slack and pulling again - like a parson tolling the bells at noon in his tower. With each tug, she brought him several feet closer, disrupting both his maneuvers and his aim at the fiercely constricting rope about his ankle, locking the slack underfoot to prevent him floating away.

The last few feet were surmounted by a crouching jump onto the slippery fiend's back, the rogue's grip digging into the shoulders, her strong thighs either pinning his metallic wings inward, or force them into restricted movement in the space between her arms and lower torso. In this manner, even if they crashed to earth, she could place Hal between her and the ground. She spoke naught, but her breathy exhale into his ear promised pain.

Hal was disappointed to see that his wing didn't slice through the rope. He would like to know where this thief had acquired such an impressive piece of equipment. He had broken some of the strands with his twist, but he would need to slice it a few more times to free himself. But, the bars around his legs disappeared! In a mist of fine sparkles like thrown glitter, they were gone. He stretched out his legs to relieved himself of the discomfort of having them locked together. That was one problem solved.

He didn't continue to try to break the rope. Instead, he watched Unity closely as she started to reel him in. He was attempting to determine what her next course of action would be, but he elected not to find out if he could avoid it. He lowered himself toward the ground, creating slack more quickly than it could be pulled taut, and he reached down to loosen and then pull the loop off of his foot. This action would bring him about where Unity intended him to be to begin with, and with his focus temporarily directed downward, it would make sense if she went through with her planned attack even if she wasn't the one to pull him down to this level. In that event, Hal, seeing the white-and-black blur leap through the air toward his back, would put his wings straight up. With the points sticking up, to try to land on his back would be like trying to land on a pair of swords. It might not result in grievous injury for someone so armored, but it would prevent easy access to the rest of his body. It would also make it nearly impossible to grip on. He was small, and his wings covered the entirety of his back from between his shoulders down nearly to his tail. There was little space for someone, especially someone larger than him, to land. In addition, in case Unity did find purchase by perhaps grabbing his wings, Hal would flip in the air so that his opponent would have to contend with gravity.

Or, if the rogue chose a different course of action, Hal, naturally, was prepared to respond in a suitable manner.

Far be it from the rogue to complain about her opponent saving her the effort of dragging him further to her level. Nor was it decidedly an issue that the sail-like wings on the creature's back raised like hackles at her pounce. Sure, they made the landing rather unpleasant, the sharp points digging painfully into her sides through the dense underweave where the plates were absent.

But a bit of bruising was well worth what she was about to unleash on Hal. For while the scrappy critter himself wasn't a decent surface to properly climb, the broad, sheer surfaces of his metallic wings sure were - and Unity fixed her thighs to them like a gecko, freeing up her hands for a more sinister task. Her right hand slipped a coiled wire and a pair of steel handles from a small belt hoop - and like a flash, the loop of wire was around the dragonoid's throat, digging and slicing into the tough hide, choking off both air and blood alike as the thief's arms applied cross-pressure in the rear with all her might.

The rogue went through with pouncing upon his back, and Hal went through with front-flipping while hovering to try to throw her off. Like a leech, she held fast and with just her legs! He didn't feel an excess of pressure pinching his wings and assumed it must be some ability that kept her on. He completed the flip and then flipped forward again, but this time only onto his back, and he turned off his levitation at the same time so that he would fall on top of her. Her grasping ability better hold for her own sake, or Hal's weight and the assistance of gravity might be enough to drive the sharp edges of his wings into her inner thighs, or worse, into her lady parts.

A wire had found its way around his neck, but it was more of a nuisance than anything. The wire cut into his skin but stopped immediately after it ran into the exoskeleton covering his body. This hardened layer greatly reduced constricting damage, and so the garrote did little to cut off his respiratory and circulatory systems. show spoilerhide spoiler Exoskeleton: He has a hardened layer just under his skin that provides protection against some types of damage. Physical Traits and Abilities

show spoilerhide spoiler

Physical limits: He can run 10mph at a sprint on two legs, and 20mph at a sprint on four legs. He can lift 200 pounds with his arms, and 20 pounds with his tail. His tail is prehensile and can wrap around objects with the grip strength of an average human. He can jump 7 feet straight up and 15 feet horizontally. His reflexes are equal in speed to a fit, athletic human. He is quite agile due to being small.

Magnetism: By influencing local magnetism, he can levitate. Though he has wings, they are used as weapons rather than flight, which is done through this levitation. His top speed while levitating is 30mph. He can't instantly attain this speed; it takes about five seconds to reach top speed. He can reverse his levitation so as to cling to the ground with more force, making himself seem to weigh twice as much as normal; doing this will slow his movement speed because he would have to resist his own cling. He can also use his magnetism to create a repelling field around himself. The field can slow the speed of metal objects that are directed at him by 33% of their original speed. Only one of these abilities can be used at a time. These abilities are granted by a certain organ in his abdomen, so a hard blow to the abdomen may damage the organ and make him incapable of using these abilities for the rest of the battle.

Alien Anatomy: His internal organs are different from that of a human--for example, the heart isn't in the left side of the chest where it would be for a human. This means that ideal targets on a human may not work on him. Also, this species doesn't have reproductive organs so groin shots are ineffective.

Trajectory Calculation: Being part machine, he can calculate the trajectory of attacks. He can see where he will need to throw something to hit an opponent at x distance moving at y speed; however, the thrown object would still miss if the opponent were to move suddenly after the thrown item leaves his hand. Similarly, he can determine when and where an attack will hit him but won't necessarily be able to move fast enough to stop it.

Enhanced Vision: He can zoom his vision in to be able to read words in a book from fifty feet away. He can see almost as well in the darkness as in the day, even in complete darkness due to his eyes being able to produce their own light. He can see infrared wavelengths and therefore the heat or absence of heat in surrounding objects, including the heat signature of opponents.

Other Senses: His hearing and sense of smell are twice as good as that of the average human.

Sealed: He has an extra, translucent pair of eyelids that he can close to keep out moisture, dust, or other irritants, though it affords no protection from physical damage like being hit in the eye. He can also close his ears, nostrils, and mouth so that water or other substances cannot enter them. Obviously when he does this he can't breathe or hear so it isn't desirable to do this for long. He can hold his breath for 4 rounds. After this point he would be forced to unseal his mouth or nostrils for 2 rounds.

Pain Sensors: He can turn off his pain sensors at the cost of making that area completely numb. For example, if he were to be wounded on the arm, he could shut off the pain sensors for that arm, but it would be like using an arm that's had the circulation cut off; it would be slow, weak and unsteady.

Weapons

Teeth: His teeth are metal. His bite force is 500 PSI. All teeth in the front are sharp, with some molars further back.

Claws: He has metal claws on all his fingers and toes, along with a sort of dewclaw on the outside edges of his hands and feet. The claws on his fingers are fully retractable, while the ones on the toes are only partially retractable. The claws on his fingers are two inches long, and the claws on his toes are three and a half inches long and thicker.

Wings: His wings are metal and triangular in shape. He can change the shape of them at will to a small degree. For instance, he can wrap them around part of his body for protection, or bend them at any point up to an 80 degree angle, but he couldn't completely change them into a shape other than a triangle. The edges can be made at will to be sharp for cutting or more rounded for blunt damage. He can remove the wings from his back and swing them around or throw them. They will come back to him if dropped or thrown if he wills them to do so. The wings can be used to block attacks just as a shield could. If his wings are damaged in the attack, it will take two rounds for them to repair themselves. Like a hunk of hard metal, the wings can resist slashing or cutting damage, but can be dented by blunt damage or softened by heat. So a light sword like a katana would be ineffective against them, but a heavier sword or a hammer would be able to dent them. As well, even if his wings can block an attack, it won't prevent him from being launched or moved by the force of the attack. He is small and so can't very well avoid being forcibly moved.

Melee: He can punch, kick, block, and grab as anyone with hands and feet can. His punching and kicking is on par in skill and strength with someone who's had a couple of years of training but isn't an expert.

Defenses

show spoilerhide spoilerExoskeleton: He has a hardened layer just under his skin that provides protection against some types of damage. Slashing/slicing damage and constricting damage is reduced by 50% and blunt damage is reduced by 25%. Piercing damage is only reduced by 10%. The exoskeleton affects only physical damage and doesn't reduce magical or elemental damage. The exoskeleton is weakened by attacks so it becomes less and less effective against repeated attacks. So for example, a blunt hit to an area will weaken that spot so that the next time it is hit, it only has 10% resistance to that damage, and the time after that, it won't resist the damage at all. An area that has taken a piercing attack will no longer have resistance to a subsequent piercing attack in that same area.

Nanobots: He has nanobots in his bloodstream which will neutralize poisons and toxins after 3 rounds. These nanobots attack foreign DNA and so can cause irritation if his blood were to come into direct skin contact with an organic being, or sickness if it were to be ingested. The degree of sickness for ingestion would be nausea and stomach cramps.
