Fireside almost felt a pang of pity for Joe'mante. The chi master had done exactly what Fireside had predicted he would do, and he would have to pay dearly for his mistake. But it would not be seemly to celebrate victory before it was firmly in his grasp, and so Fireside's face remained a calm mask, not betraying his intentions and feelings until it was too late to react to them.
"Arkamha." he murmured, and the flame sphere sped off after Joe, keeping behind him.
Meanwhile, Fireside continued the pressure from the gout of flame, mildly annoyed at first that the whirling air around Joe'mante was deflecting it away. But he knew something about the nature of fire that Joe apparently did not, and his annoyance quickly turned into sinister glee.
Fire fed off of two things as it burned: fuel, and oxygen. Introducing more oxygen increased the rate at which fire burned, increasing it's temperature rapidly to temperatures that could melt metal. With Fireside's arcane powers providing the practically limitless fuel, what Joe perceived as a deflective shield would quickly turn into a blast furnace that had Joe at it's center. All Fireside needed to do was slightly change the angle that the flames struck the whirlwind, and they would be drawn into the vortex, scorching its occupant with flames far hotter than those that were streaming forth from Fireside's palm. But, this would only be part of the problem, because, even as they streamed forth, the strength of the flames grew, rather than waning. They now burned a bright yellow even as they left Fireside's palm, turning to a pale blue as they were whisked into the vortex, now burning at a temperature that wouldn't be out of place in a foundry. And the terrible irony was that the more Joe gathered the vortex, the faster he fried himself alive.
Even as this was happening, though, Fireside was able to further cement the fate of his opponent. This shift in the potency of his gout of flame had required practically no effort beyond the maintenance of the concentration he had already established, and thus he was free to compound Joe'mante's peril with deadly precision.
The flame sphere did not have far to travel, and was about to smash into the column of whirling air when Fireside's voice thundered across the arena, far louder than any of his previous invocations. The very arena shook from the force of the yell, and several onlookers near the float fell to their knees from the shock that echoed not only in their ears but shook them to their very hearts. It was the voice of tyranny, the voice of oppression. A voice that had enslaved worlds and rent the souls of thousands. A voice that here, would seek to end this struggle in one final, collective blow.
*FULHERRI!!!*
Twin detonations rocked the arena. The first was the flame sphere, exploding some 2 feet behind Joe'mante. Like it's previous twin, it exploded in a rush of red flame, with the explosive force of an antipersonnel mine. It would not be powerful enough to seriously hurt Joe'mante, even at this range, given the presence of the air vortex. Unfortunately for the martial artist, it didn't need to. Instead, it's effect served to generate a pressure wave that shunted the base of the vortex forward ahead of Joe'mante, somewhat like when the base of a tornado trails behind the storm front at the top of the cyclone due to the pressure difference. In this case, however, this served to open him to the full fury of the detonation of the small red marble.
That explosion was far more powerful, having had time to passively absorb energy from the elemental planes. Dark blue, practically violet flames roared outward in all directions, some fifteen feet in every direction, boiling across the distance separating them from both fighters at supersonic speed, propelled by a force detonation equal to about a hundred pounds of TNT. It arrived fractions of a second after the first detonation, flooding the area around Joe's legs with inconceivable heat, accompanied by a shockwave that would likely break bone, and bend metal, even without the assistance of the tremendous heat.
However, it was a desperate gambit, one that had consequences for Fireside himself, even as he poured fire into the upper half of the vortex. He gritted his teeth, and it was all he could do to keep from screaming as the force and flame ripped away first the outer flame shield, then ate through his mage armor, disintegrating it into scintillating ash. They shielded him from the worst of the blast, but he could feel his exposed flesh scald under the fierce flame, first drying to an angry red, then blistering horridly across it's surface as the effect finished it's voracious destruction, finally petering out, leaving a smoking crater, superheated metal railings, great scorch marks, and, hopefully, an utterly defeated opponent.
