Long, complicated, and tedious. He was almost on the point of running, keeping up with the little man, letting the length of his strides make up for the time between them as he usually did; it would be nice to save what energy he could, especially with how long the trip down here was. This dungeon of a place didn't exactly fulfill his ideal jogging conditions.
Bastards are splitting us up and wearing us down, even if just a little. But... why bother splitting us up if only one of us gets to fight? Trying to get us scared?
It had been a pretty bizarre reaction from the FIGHTER, and then they had been taken to such a place... without a sign of crowd or even the staff anywhere. It had clinched it when they were all split up.
Here I'd been waiting for them to kick down my door again.
Quote: The small compartment was silent except for the exterior sounds of the carriage and sliding leather- for most of the trip at least. The other men were ignoring him as much as he them. In that sense, it didn’t really matter if he was riding with his teammates or just coachmen.
In essence, he was alone.
Kael sat, stretched out and lounging, one leg way out in front of him and the other bent up closer to the rest of him as he gripped the leather straps, one at a time, and synched the armaments tight, over and over, assuring the fit was snug and the gaps as small as possible. It was a calming thing to do before battle, just a habit, and his eyes and mind were elsewhere.
The middle of nowhere, and yet…
It’s all so old and preserved, some ancient monument that’s gone untouched for ages. The collapsing castle, the worn fields, the untouched earth… I thought the only ruined battle grounds like these on Gaia were the most recent ones.
The boot thudded to the flooring, and he set one arm across his stomach, taking the first of the already tightened leather straps between his thumb and first two fingers, testing the security absently.
In this world, it would take something serious to keep such places preserved, a lot of power, or a lot of significance. Then again… I’ve never even heard of them.
Only to bring them out for a fighting tournament.
What sort of people run this show?
The place grew wearisome rather quickly, dim and identical all through its length. Normally his patience wouldn’t have been an issue at all, but this day it was only his preoccupation that saved him frustration. He was shutting out the stage about him almost completely. The swordsman’s focus was on remaining calm, and gathering his wits. He had plenty of thoughts to mull over to do it. It was only a question of which ones to indulge and which to avoid.
Quite a few memories that pricked at his mind were more than a little dangerous.
Quote: Once they were all assembled, Kael began his descent almost at once, ahead of the pack. There wasn’t much question as to where their “Labyrinth” could be amidst the old structure they’d been brought to, especially not with the oddest sort of assistance he could have imagined for the tournament seemed to provide them just hint enough, again and again.
As the rest of them spoke, Kael shut himself off in the silence of his head.
For once, Vahn, Athan, and himself seemed more united than ever before- they shared a cause, a goal, a drive. And yet, he felt as distant as ever from the first, more from the second. Rage’s presence in and of itself was threatening to ruin his concentration, even if there had been almost no sign of the previous hostility at the Firebrand- what to make of that, he wasn’t sure at all.
It does seem to go on forever, downward, downward, and downward. Stairs and distorted space… maybe even time… it really is like a walk down the old memory lane.
He could almost feel the walls calling out to him, even though that was another place, not this one. Long locked away emotions and memories of other men grasping for some life to take a hold of, some warmth to ease the deathly cold they knew. Echoes that sounded like other voices, or said the wrong things, mirrors that showed you the wrong face… faces of strangers that looked so familiar, frighteningly, more than your own.
He could still remember how then he had only wanted to be alone, to be able to abandon himself and surrender… but there was always a small set of hands there to help him back up and urge him on. To turn his surrender into an indomitable will to emerge from his trial. A reason why he could not fail.
But that was so far away now… and remotely, he wondered if he’d effectively given it up for good by this point. He was desperate for the comfort, the warmth he found there… but he had a different reason he could not fail now.
He wasn’t the one at risk this time.
I wonder… if I’m to be reborn again this time…
The stairs went on and on, but his goal only seemed to grow further as he approached it. But to stop walking… to turn around and give up… it was inconceivable.
Who will I leave this place as?
And now that he was apart from them... he realized how alone he was. Fracture wasn't much of a team, but they were a team. They may not have shared much brotherhood between the lot of them, but they had a common goal... until now at least. And to put them apart.
I imagine Rage will still fight, if only for his own pride. But would he fight with us, or apart from us? If he's going to act recklessly and alone...
It wasn't something to bother thinking about. Headstrong as he was, Rage was no moron. Maybe too familiar for Kael's tastes.
If that happens, I know what I'll have to do. I just have to hope it won't cost anyone else too much.
He'd almost forgotten he was following the small man, when suddenly he came to his attention again- slowing.
Kael came up beside him quickly, long strided walk putting him just behind it quickly. The creepy little man had some role, and he seemed content to do nothing more than play it. Not the sort of guide he'd have liked to take him into the middle of a vast underground maze, but he wasn't afforded much choice. About all there was to it was to step right up beside him to the doors, and watch as the lion split in two and parted admitting him entrance.
"Well, someone will be showing up to lead me back out, wo-"
He blinked over his shoulder at the little man staring back at him blankly, and frowned.
"I never mind then.
"This shouldn't bore me, at least."
He stepped through the gates and stood by them, eyes closed and listening to the seemingly deafening sound of the doors sealing themselves behind him.
"Classic. Now all we need is the minotaur."
He opened his eyes, making sure he was as well adjusted to the dim lighting that seemed to come from everywhere, and nowhere as he would get, and shrugged his shoulders to loosen them, fiddling with his pants and jacket to make sure everything was fitting right.
By this point, if he gauntlet's and boots hadn't been snug, they were never going to be.
Finally, each hand fell to a small sling on either hip- to his right a knife hanging from the sheathe, attached to his belt, and on his left what seemed to be an overlong handled short sword- overlong by far. Of course, he'd simply taken his broken blade with him, for one reason or another.
"Mmm."
Well, they'd be there if he needed them.
Finally he reached up and took the b*****d sword from his shoulder, holding the blade out in front of him at a shallow upward angle, and put his left hand just in front of the forward edge, near half length.
"The front," he mumbled to himself. "But just as easily above, soon as easily behind. In this crazy world, maybe even through the walls."
He picked up a foot carefully, and set the rubber sole down lightly, as quietly as he could move with his heavily fortified boots and gauntlets. Creeping forward into the maze.
"...but which one of us will you come for first...?"
