"Brass? Or silver?
Brass would go well with the carpet...but silver looks awesome on dark furniture...
Damn - what should I do??"
Holding a heavy, old looking bedside lamp in each hand, Lucind's expression changed from frustration to resignation.
"Max? You decide. This one, or this one?"
Her amber eyes, looking up at him with great expectance, made clear: this was a crucial decision. The fact that she allowed him to pick a piece of decoration, though, said a lot - and it would definitely put most men in a tricky, if not insolvable situation. You know what they say about women and shopping...woman and decoration in particular.
Five minutes later, they would leave the store to continue their way to the fountain. Without any lamp, by the way. Because no matter which one had been bought in the end, Lucind would leave it with the clerk to fetch it later on.
"Oh," Lucind exclaimed, squeezing Maximos' hand.
Was he prepared? It was the same scenario like the three times before: The Siren made some excited noise and - without any warning - pulled the Shadow over to the window of a shop (here: a mercer, a bookstore and an antiques store which sold the lamps).
Maybe he had prepared some strategy this time, to stop her, or to remind they didn't have much time left.
Yet, it wouldn't be needed:
"That restaurant over there, that with the double front door, it's really good. We could have lunch there after the fight. Unless..." The sweetest grin spread over her face. "...you're unable to walk when we're done."
Finally, after another ten minutes of walking through Barton's crowded downtown, both of them arrived at the open square centered around the fountain. And: there were no ducks to be seen. After the first fights at this location they either had been killed or evacuated. Or they were lining up for a protest march at the closest HoH office.
Lucind registered how many people had already gathered behind the safety fences. Then again, if all previous fights had been as cinematic as the one between Athan and Ebris - she hoped someone had been able to reattach her teammate's ear -, the steadily growing bulk of spectators wasn't really a surprise.
The two of them reported at a table on which someone from the tournament's staff was sitting. Putting her bag under the table, the Siren took of her long purple coat, thus revealing her combat outfit; today, however, she'd left the skirt at home.
Speaking of which, even though no fighter was informed who his opponent was going to be, Maximos and Lucind had found out pretty quickly that fortune had made them a prelim-pair. A few days ago, she proudly showed him the progress the Feiruza, her new store and swimming apartment, had undergone during the last weeks. At some point, the following dialogue had unfolded.
"By the way, we have to find an alternate date for our movie night, I'm afraid."
"How comes?"
"Got a note from the HoH committee today. Prelims start next week."
"...wait a second. Wednesday?"
"Yes."
"One o'clock?"
"Yeah."
"Barton...Fountain?"
"Don't tell me-"
"Yes."
Both: "...oh."
So, here they were. And both seemed quite relaxed about the fact that in a few moments they were to fight, each of them eager to gather points for their teams.
Stretching her arms and legs, the Siren looked up when some guys behind the fence started cheering and whistling: one of them was holding a quickly scribbled poster reading, >>Lovers' brawl - FTW!!!<<
"..."
How the hell did they know? Were the media's dogs even peskier this year?
Then, Lucind directly looked at the young man with the poster.
He cheered even more.
She kept staring. Not glaring. Just plain staring.
Slight confusion found its way on his face.
More staring.
He blushed heavily and got rid of the message, while Lucind got back to warming up her muscles.
"Ready?"
That was finally directed at Maximos and accompanied by a warm smile.
