"Yare, yare..."
Tenkai staggered just as the Devil did, now bleeding from two gashes on his body. Tenkai winced in pain at the sting of his wounds, thanking his lucky stars that he had pulled away when he did. It was foolhardy of him to push forward when he had landed that stab, but not once would he forget that this was simply a competition.
He wasn't sure if he was able to truly say the same for his opponent, though.
Tenkai was a warrior, whether he be a monk, samurai, or both. He could smell the battle high coming off of Roen like a strong cologne. The killing intent and desire to reign victorious over one's opponent. It only went so far before one decided to throw down and lay the cards on the table.
Unlike most warriors, Tenkai did not take advantage of Roen's moment of meditation. Half of it was out of respect, and the other half out of strategy. Only fools charged so blindly into battle. Tenkai took that moment to calm his spirits as well, bringing Muramasa up to his chest horizontally as he placed the palm of his hand against the dull side of the blade near the tsuba.
"絶望は強さに成る..."
(Turn your despair into strength...)
Closing his eyes, he ran the palm of his hand down the length of the blade's dull edge, taking his mind off of the pain and purely focusing on Muramasa.
"哀しみは不屈に成る..."
(Turn your sorrow into fortitude...)
As his hand passed down the blade, his concentration wreathed Muramasa in an aura of spiritual pressure, licking off of it like a wispy blue flame. Roen's fortitude in battle was only getting stronger, and if it continued, both parties would be pushed too far. Tenkai had to put an end to it before then, and in order to do that he only had one thing to focus on...
"I hope that...wherever you are...you are watching, my love."
Roen wasn't the only one with a goddess watching over him.
Tenkai's eyes opened wide, bringing his sword to his lower right side, his left hand steadily holding onto the pommel of Muramasa's hilt. Roen had now armed himself with his much larger sword, Hræðilegr, discarding Nigeralo. No doubt it was his stronger weapon based on how he was bringing it out now. A blade like that could easily cleave a person in two with a single swing. Roen definately wasn't kidding around now.
The fight needed to end.
The Devil, now five feet away, began to bring the hefty blade around in a wide arc to cleave the samurai in two. As much of a telegraph as it was given the poise of the blade, Tenkai surprisingly did not wait until Roen came closer with the blade to react. Instead, he quickly buckled in his right leg and rolled into his armor-clad right shoulder in a swift ukemi roll slightly forward and to his right. Although the sword was large, Roen's swing was incredibly swift, and the early evasion allowed Tenkai to evade the massive sword before he lost more than just some of his blood in this fight. The massive blade would woosh over Tenkai's rolling body as he passed.
Tenkai's roll ended with him down on his right knee, with his left knee up. But the evasion had left Tenkai about four feet away from Roen at Roen's left side. How was Tenkai supposed to counter-attack from that distance? Even if he wanted to reach with the tip, he would be over-extending himself, which would be easily exploitable, especially when kneeling. Although the wound in Roen's left leg may or may not make it difficult to pivot, it would have still been a wasted effort for Tenkai.
And yet, as the heft of Roen's blade passed to Roen's right side and the samurai's dodge roll ended, he continued to hold Muramasa in migi waki no kamae (the lower-right position it was originally in), sliding his left foot to the sit as he twisted his hips to his left. As Roen's blade passed, Tenkai's eyes burned furiously with spiritual power as the aura surrounding Muramasa raged...
...and although his blade would not reach, he swung the edge upward, his body raising with the blade as he pushed up with his knees so that he would once again be standing. Muramasa tore through the tatami mat floor as it dragged against it.
灼熱波
"Shakunetsu Ha!" (Scorching Wave)
From the arc of Tenkai's upward swing erupted a powerful surge of spiritual pressure that released forward, tearing through the ground in front of him. Tenkai's blade completely missed Roen's body, but he swung as if Roen was two or so feet closer. The wounded left side of Roen's body was open to him, especially with his left hand being the lead for his large sword. So although Tenkai's swing would not reach, the wave of spirit energy would. At virtually point-blank range, it would crash into Roen's left side with great force, washing over him like a wave of blue fire. Since the "flames" were not actual fire it would not burn, but they carried the same properties as Muramasa, bolstered by the holy wrath of the monk's own spirit. If Roen had any natural immunity to flame, now would be the first time in his life that he ever felt the mortal sting of being burnt.
Since Tenkai only took so much time into preparing the attack, it would not have enough force to cause any life-threatening damage. Although his opponent would feel the burn, the strength of the attack was in the force of the wave. Tenkai intended it agitate Roen's wounds and remind him of how far the battle had come, and for the sake of the two of them continuing through the tournament, they had to end it before they took eachother's life.
Which was not to say that Tenkai's wounds were not agitated as well. The exertion from the hip rotation caused them to bleed even more, drops of his blood hitting the ground. Tenkai did not want to overdo it, but it was clear to him that Roen wished for a worthy opponent. Being human, there definately was not much for a Devil to see in him. Perhaps this show of force would be enough to quench Roen's battlethirst.
Nevertheless, the monk would not lose his focus.
