Latent was a port city, the tavern sat against the docks and in this cold winter season the chill rolled right off the water's surface, carried into town with a light wind. The longer she stood there in the night's eerie silence save for Connor's hushed and somber voice, it seemed to seep right through the layers of clothing and to her very core.
The scene couldn't be any more cliche, with the flickering light casting awkward shadows along the pavement and neighboring walls of the establishment, the dim glow of lamps erected above every post along the boardwalk. Any faint brilliance from across the watery way seemed to get lost in the murky darkness.

"Physically, and mentally, Ryke...I'm too much of a mess to begin to describe, but I think there's some of that in everyone."
She could hear Connor speaking, but somehow, as she stood and stared at him calmly, silently and unmoving - studying him carefully. His physical stature was nearly identical, his personality was rather different in some ways but there were things that Ryke could never mistake, her lips were down-turned into a frown not out of discontent or unpleasant thoughts, but just deep concentration. That was just a habit, she always looked angry or upset while lost in thought, didn't mean she was though.
Finally after a period of nothing, she piped up. "Yeah? That sounds familiar." Ryke hadn't said to be smart with Connor, nor was it sarcasm, it was the gods honest truth. It was simply a statement but thus far he had yet to really differentiate between his problems and the next guy's.

"...There really is something inside, eating me alive. Both in here, "he touched his temple, then moved his hand to the center of his chest, not his heart, "...and in here. An illness, you could say."
Her eyes followed the path this has hand made, watching carefully still wearing a frown, though it had settled a bit and now wavered between neutrality and mild confusion.
What exactly was he implying?
There wasn't much to be said, save for "What?" and Ryke figured it was probably redundant, already plainly written on her face. The question though, wasn't about to go unanswered and came instead in the form of actions.
Ones that took her by complete surprise.
She barely saw the fist coming at the last possible second, giving Ryke only enough time to move her head, honestly expecting Connor to hit her ... but there wasn't even the slight kiss of a knuckle - he hit the wall with a resounding boom and left the ginger haired merc with large eyes and stunned.
Now, if it had been a spar, a fight, or combat initiated by either of them then there would be no shock, or surprise - had Connor been anyone else, she might have slipped around behind them and shoved them into the wall face first.
Only, he wasn't - and she didn't.
Her form relaxed though, releasing the tension after assuming she narrowly dodged an unprovoked attack. Turning her head to look at her teammate, she noticed it now. She felt the heat radiating off of his form and honestly didn't know what to think, his whole demeanor had completely morphed. Boldness overcame the huntress, a boldness that encouraged her to move back and put herself right between Connor and the wall and right in his direct line of vision, right at eye level - the inches difference between their heights was so insignificantly small that her eyes had nowhere else to go but fall on his.
Fascination was apparent within her face, staring back at the inner beast, the thing he had been holding at bay. Oh there was plenty of fascination, no real sign of fear but an intelligent acknowledgment of the potential threat.
However, the moment he closed some of the space between them, she tensed and grimaced, her natural defensive instincts itched, noticeably bothered by the close proximity of her teammate to her own self.
Sure, he had stolen a few kisses back during their spar, and she'd just been sitting down to drinks with him prior to the little show and tell session but the careful way he leaned in, with unclear intentions - it put her off. Not in a bad sense, but it was both awkward and familiar at the same time.
That was going to drive her crazy.
Finally, after what felt like a good minute of holding her breath he turned away and she scowled this time, not disapprovingly of Connor but for other reasons. Regardless, she reeled her thoughts back in and forced them to focus on the subject matter at hand.
"That was ... interesting." She started, carefully, moving away from the wall. Ryke was still watching Connor though, to see what else he would do, not just to make sure she was on her guard in case he thought it would be fun to throw another punch, even if he had intentionally aimed for the wall.
Connor - was a meta.
Here all this time she had taken her opponent for human, like herself. There was nothing wrong with that, but it was a nice twist of the plot. With studying eyes, she kept moving, almost circling him not in a predatory fashion or out of fear but caution and curiosity. "So, what is it?"
