[Leonard Greer]
[Downtown Latent - March 11th, 2011]
"So have they aired it yet?"
No, in fact, the local Channel 7, that dominated much of the Heaven or Hell coverage along with a few select stations that got support from the foundation, had not aired the little "interview" yet. It was a singular turn of luck for Leonard Greer, and through him the Star Network. The station tended to get edged out heavily by all the local and fight oriented stations when it came to Heaven or Hell, so some time ago the celebrity focused satellite station had stopped sending full teams to cover Heaven or Hell when they realized they got one story out of everything the other stations got two from. At the moment he was the sole reporter on sight, jamming himself into a phone booth to make this call with a small semblance of privacy, while his only cameraman was probably off spending his unearned cash drinking again. It was alright- he didn't need him for this.
"You're ******** kidding me. Give me his name again- Galloway? Yeah. And he's holed up downtown? 9th?"
Leonard hadn't expected to get material good enough to do more than write up an article or two in the magazine from, the usual fare, when he'd been sent on this dead end gig. Those predictions had come true last year, and been looking this same for this one right up until he'd gotten that sweet, sweet text telling him all about how a freelancer under contract with Channel 7 had struck some kind of gold while compiling a series of minute chats, pictures, and gossip on the competitors. The guy had the reels ready to air, but he'd gone rogue and locked himself in his apartment- where he was threatening to sell the piece to the highest bidder if he didn't get a serious raise.
Channel 7 had kept the whole deal under pretty tight wraps, but there was nothing the guys back at SN were good at if it wasn't sniffing out dirty little secrets.
"Yeah, yeah- I've got four hundred I can give him up front, it's all the cash I could grab on short notice. Has Walsch decided how much we can give him? Yeah? No s**t."
And it was one hell of a raise he was about to get. The other places could outbid them, but Greer had two advantages- the first was that he was going to hit the guy while he was pressured, before all the rest got to him, and the second was that this kind of sweet talking and negotiating was exactly what he'd been hired for in the first place. Pulling his coat up around himself the reporter stepped out of the booth and looked around. Had the streets been empty, he might have been tempted to sprint. Instead he pulled a single cigarette from his pocket and lit up, taking one good, long pull before starting off at a brisk pace. It was close enough to reach by foot, and once he closed this deal he'd put Star Network back on the radar around here- and get himself transfered somewhere tolerable. The raises, the pats on the back for this thing- he could take the wife out to dinner. No, ******** that. He'd get a sitter for the kids and take her on a cruise. He could practically feel the sun and hear the quiet- no shouting, no nagging- already. Taking to the back alleys he cut straight for his destination, vaulting a bum and ignoring his cries of protest.
And I'll never have to hear about how these are gonna kill me again.
He felt invincible, tearing through the town. He wasn't entirely sure where he was, but he could still see enough in the distance to know he was headed the right way, and making good time. Leonard didn't even hear the maniac the first time he shouted- until he stumbled out across the alley in front of him, blocking the way off.
"Hey, move it! I don't have the time-" the reporter tried to skirt around the body, but it flopped forward in his way, clutching at his ankles.
"No, no! Please! You can help! Youuu~" the bum crooned, hanging onto his ankle as if for dear life, dirty coat and rage sprawling out around him, making it even harder to try and just avoid the man. "Yesss, I just need to reach some friends, they'll fix it allllll for me. You'll help, won't you?"
"Buddy, I don't know your friends. Come on, let go-" with obvious distaste.
Leonard hadn't been sure what bothered him more about this hobo; his filthy clothing and wild mop of greasy sand colored hair, or the wild wobbling and spikes of pitches in the man's voice. When the man screeched in response to an attempt to pull his leg free, he made up his mind.
"Here, just take some change, go make your call, alright?"
"No, no- LISTEN!" the shrill excitement gave way to a bark of authority- or maybe a threat? Leonard caught himself stopping, and dug into his pocket anyway, tossing coins across the alley in hopes he might dive after them. No such luck. Instead he turned his head upward, and smiling for all the world as if he'd just seen the most beautiful sight of his life "You can bring them here. You're perfect. Absolutely- perfection!"
Mother of God. What is wrong with-
No, it was obvious. Greer wasn't dealing with some drugged up punk or mental escapee. This man was diseased, and whatever it was, it was going to his head. Between the furrows down his face and scabs, almost like self mutilation, to the unfocused look in his eye- eye being the key point. Whatever had been wrecking the rest of his face had worn the man's cheeks to bone thin, cost him the end of one of his bandaged, bony fingers, and and eye. Even through the makeshift patch Leonard could see the skin inflamed and puffing with some kind of infection.
His stomach lurched.
"Get off of me!" the reporter barked and kicked the bum in the stomach, hard. That commanding tone gave way right back to squeals again, but it took two more stick kicks before he got the freak off his leg, writhing on the concrete.
"******. Holy-- ******."
If this guy was already hurting, and he'd kicked the s**t out of him, could he get arrested for that? The cops couldn't be happy about it- his mind was spinning too fast to think. The address, right.
He'd get there, get the film, and then he could go back to his hotel room and scrub himself so clean he forget about this mess. Leonard lifted a foot to step over the bum, and like a coiled spring, the pile of rags and dirt shot to life. The reporter blinked as a cold sting crossed the back of his leg, and the world spun.
His knees hit the ground and a sound he wouldn't have thought he could produce left his lips as the pain of the cut Achilles and sight of the tiny, reddened hook of a blade struck him together. The pile of rags shot up, stuffing some bundle of clothes at his mouth, terrified, Leonard clawed and flailed back. Panic, pain, flashing motion. The little blade vanished, and pain shot up one of his arms- the grotesque man forced him back over onto the ground, pressing the foul tasting cloth, and it's oppressive smell harder into his mouth. Leonard grasped at his face, grunting against the thing as tears streamed down his face, trying to claw the man's eyes. Teeth bared- and bits of metal wired in around them, small but sharp- and Leonard retracted the hand before it could be bitten. Balling a fist, he struck- again and again.
But the strength was already leaving him.
The taste, the acrid smell, grew until it seemed to fill his whole body, and his limb would barley even lift itself in response. Huffing and chortling unevenly, the figure pulled the cloth and a mostly empty vial tucked inside it from Greer's mouth. No screams came. Paralysis seemed to be setting in, breathing growing harder- but he refused to die. His pulse kept going, slower, weaker, until even his eyes seemed to stop moving- staring down his body at the murderer hunched over him, even as the "bum" hooked a leg under each of his arms and dragged him across the ground. Somewhere darker- through a door. Dim and dank. Every ounce of energy he could muster coursed throw him, but it all slowly died away from panic to a helpless, overwhelming horror. He didn't even feel his head bounce against the door frame as he was hauled in.
"Shh-shh-shh-shh-- none of that now," the dirty man smiled as he bent over and almost tenderly wiped the tears from his eyes. "You'll bring them to me- be happy! You're doing His work. And you shall be among the first to be remade. Rejoice!"
Pulling the small blade from one of his hands and delicately cleaning it on a filthy sleeve, he reached into the folds of his coat, and retrieved a bundle of dirty looking wire attached to a needle, and a scalpel.
"You shall be-" he climbed forward, crouching over Leonard, and reached down to gently caress his cheek with the side of the scalpel, "-a work of art!"
If there had been a God watching, It would have let him close his eyes.
