The Commons, At the beginning of Round 2
With three pylons recorded so far, Tenkai was starting to wonder just how many more of them were left to find. The Ark was a big place, and treading across every square inch of it would take far longer than the time he had on hand. So far there were only four locations on the Ark that were free for his perusal, and he had already checked three of them. The more time he spent around the pylons, the more his sensitivity to them increased. By now Tenkai had grown confident enough in his senses to determine that there was only one pylon in each of the areas he had visited. That left him with the Commons.
Tenkai hadn't expected to feel so...in need of relaxation once he got off the tram. Perhaps it was the combined effect of all the amenities provided by the Commons, all rolled into one convenient strip. Tenkai wasn't a needy person in the slightest, as Buddhist philosophy encouraged him to rid himself of material desires. But to completely rid himself of every ounce of enjoyment the material world had to offer was a practice in nihilism. There was always a "middle path" to follow, where one could enjoy the things other people did without becoming a slave to attachment.
In that regard, Tenkai was probably even less like a Buddhist monk than usual. He wasn't a vegetarian, nor was he really celibate, even if he directed his energies towards higher causes. He rejected much less of the material world than other monks did. Even if he'd usually prefer to read in silence, he enjoyed watching television every now and then. He'd even eat considerably less-than-healthy foods from time to time to treat himself. But this was a different case. Somehow, being in the Commons made him want to relax and enjoy himself more than he usually wished to.
I don't want to lose sight of my objective, he thought, But I'll probably lose my mind anyway if I don't step back for a moment to gain some perspective. Time is of the essence, but would a little enjoyment really set me that far off schedule? I'll need to think about this...
Eight seconds later
"I'll have a large Mountain Dew, please!" he said in his casually chipper tone, standing before one of the many food courts lined in a row
"You'll have to be more specific, sir," said a very disinterested teen-aged cashier.
"Specific?"
"Yeah. We got Large, Medium Large, Large Large, Larger Large, Extra Large, Extra Extra Large, Grande, Venti, Molto Grande, and our ever-popular Bladder Buster Tub."
As he spoke, the cashier displayed the various sizes, which were nothing more than the same cup with different shapes and styles of caps and bottoms. Each of them were relatively the same volume, with prices scaling at uneven intervals. The "Extra Extra Large" was apparently $5.37 before taxes.
Tenkai was pensive, somewhat disappointed that the choice wasn't easier. "Hmmm...I don't know. I'm pretty thirsty, but I don't want to spend too much on soda."
"Oh, did I also fail to mention that all concessions are free for current and previous competitors?" replied the cashier in a bored, monotone voice.
"Really? Wow!" replied the monk. I knew Noah had a lot of money to toss around, but...it's like he doesn't even care anymore. "Thank you very much. I just so happen to be a previous competitor."
"Cool story, bro. Now what do you want?"
Hmmm...money doesn't seem to be an issue, but do I really want to take full advantage of it just to satisfy a meager material desire? I need to think about this...
Two seconds later
"I'll have the Bladder Buster Tub of Mountain Dew...and two large French-fried potatoes. No sandwich."
Tenkai figured that excluding the sandwich would make up for him getting two orders of fries. Obviously his splurging was getting the better of his nutritional awareness.
"Coming right up," said the unenthusiastic cashier, who quirked an eyebrow at Tenkai's use of the phrase "French-fried potatoes".
Five minutes later
"Oh wow, this is pretty big," Tenkai said to himself as he walked away from the food court and over to one of the poolside tables. The tub was slightly wider than the span of his hand, and taller than the length of his forearm. The fry boxes were about as big as to be expected. Sitting down, Tenkai looked at the "feast" of sodium and HFCS laid before him. He was now faced with another tough decision.
"Oh boy, this is quite a bit. I don't want to waste too much time eating, but I don't want to eat too fast. I'll feel bad about it, and I'd probably enjoy it better if I ate it slowly."
Tenkai took a single french fry and nibbled on it just a bit, washing it down with a tiny sip of his soda.
"There, that wasn't so bad," he said, repeating the process.
Forty-three seconds later
"Ohhhh no, that was a bad idea..."
Tenkai sat there, groaning, with two empty, grease-stained boxes of french fries and one large, empty plastic cup with its cap lopsidedly hanging off of the straw sitting in front of him on the table. His sense of urgency combined with the enjoyment of his guilty pleasure got the better of him, causing him to eat and drink much faster than he should have been. In spite of the fact that the cashier was a bit of a jerk and filled most of the tub with ice, its large volume left enough room for a great deal of liquid. The monk sat there, filled with Mountain Dew and potatoes, awaiting the inevitable.
"I wonder how long it'll be before before this catches up with me and---"
Ten seconds later
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..." said a rather relieved Tenkai, standing in front of a urinal.
Twenty-three more seconds later
"There...that should be the end of that," said Tenkai, having just finished his business.
Wait a minute...did I miss something?
The monk's eyes shifted to the right, only to find a security guard standing right outside the entrance to the men's showers no more than eight feet away from him.
Tenkai blinked.
...
The security guard was silent.
Tenkai blinked again.
"Nothing to see here," said the guard, as if he was reading from an invisible queue card of overused security guard lines.
It seemed that amidst the overwhelming urge to pee, Tenkai didn't notice the familiar psychic hum prodding his brain as he drew closer to the pylon. Rearranging his clothing to render himself presentable once more, Tenkai backed away from the urinal and took a peek into the entrance.
Lo and behold, there was the pylon...in the oddest of places.
The men's shower room?
Tenkai slowly walked away and headed out the locker room door. He was fortunate to have been given a moment of genuine bewilderment at the guard's presence, since it was the perfect cover for him to note the pylon's location without looking suspicious. Once he had exited the facility, he quickly marked the location of the pylon on his map.
None of this makes any sense, thought Tenkai. All of the pylon locations seem to be...random. What sort of use does it have in the men's shower? And that one back in the Spire of Hell, in such an odd place up above the ground floor. There's just no rhyme or reason to it.
Of course, it wasn't long until his attention was grabbed once more...
Code: "Aaaaaaand Round 2 of Heaven or Hell is officially underway, folks!"
...said a voice coming from one of the many plasma screens that hung about the Commons. It was set to GESPN, and which was like ESPN, but with a G in front of it. It seemed that Ricky Baudelaire's popularity had dropped a bit in the wake of Bruce Hardcastle's death, so the network was trying its hand at some new blood. Either that, or these were just the commentators for martial arts and fighting sports.
Code: "The fights have been pretty furious so far, but before getting back to the footage let's check out the arena specs for this round, starting with the aptly named 'The Field!"
The commentator sounded a bit too excited for someone shouting out "The Field". It seemed like the most unlikely place to hold a match, even if that was what HoH was known for. It was probably one of the darkest fighting areas he had ever seen, hardly able to make out anything other than what the commentator was---
Wait a minute...
It passed by the camera for a moment, but soon enough the footage gave him a close-up of the center of the field. It was hard to see amidst the fog, but the contrast of the heath against the corn fields made it easier to discern. Not to mention the camera didn't seem to read the strange, disorienting aura the same way the naked eye did.
There's another one? In the middle of one of the fighting areas?
With the camera's bird's eye view and convenient map inset accompanying the footage, Tenkai was able to get a good grasp on the pylon's location. Trying to investigate it personally while a match was underway would probably be a bit too suspicious for his liking, especially with all of those hidden cameras recording the fight.
I should look this over for a bit, he thought, heading to the tram station. Perhaps a ride on the tram would relax his mind an allow him to focus.
