Indeed, Tenrai did draw his bow, but upon seeing his opponent charging him, which was, to some extent, expected, he wouldn't even bother stringing an arrow, since it was pointless to even attempt after Crawley stampeded towards him. Instead, as the kick approached, and as his opponent was left blind (metaphorically) due to his positioning, Tenrai would prepare an attack. At the same time, he also prepared to take the hit. So, as Crawley's foot came within only a few feet of Tenrai's head, Tenrai began moving both of his arms. His right arm began raising. As the kick landed on Tenrai's right cheek, he wrapped his right arm around his leg. This did two things. One, this lessened the distance the kick could have sent Tenrai backwards, which would also cause Tenrai to pull Crawley with him. Secondly, this would hopefully prevent Crawley from escaping.
While not at the exact same time, Tenrai's second action would start happening before the kick landed as well. With his left hand, still gripping his bow, Tenrai swung, first somewhat upwards, then downwards, aiming for the area behind his opponent's knee (did I mention the bow had a blade along the outside edge?). There wouldn't be enough force to chop his leg off, especially with Tenrai's posture, but it would definitely be enough to cut through the skin and cause some damage. There were a few ligaments in that area, a bunch of veins, bone, muscle, etc. Bone and muscle damage would be fun, and the veins might make him bleed out eventually (although it'd take a while), but the area Tenrai was interested in was the ligament along the outside of the knee. Any damage to it would make it both painful and difficult to walk, likely causing the leg to give out here and there, depending on the severity of the injury. Tenrai might receive a broken cheek or jaw bone from Crawley's attack, but Crawley might have problems with walking after this. Taking damage was never a good thing, but it sometimes put you in the best position to attack yourself, and given Crawley's choice of attack, he wouldn't even see it coming.
That wasn't it though. After the blade attack, Tenrai would follow up with another one. After the bow attack would miss or hit, Tenrai would let go of Crawley's leg and punch upwards at the front of his knee. The bow attack might not have done enough damage, so Tenrai decided to attack the other side. Unless Crawley somehow turned his head around to look at Tenrai's hand, which his leg would likely be in the way of, Crawley would miss something else. It wasn't obvious, but the air around Tenrai's fist would seem a bit distorted, as if something was surrounding it.
