"Why is it there is always something vaguely evil about carnivals?" His fingers hitched into either side of his belt as he walked, his hips bobbing with odds and ends used for combat. Purple dragonscale armor occasionally catches scant swatches of light, and the Troikan let his eyes to wander. A Sword-Go-Round was his first sight. And that made his stomach turn. "I mean, seriously, what kind of an a***e even designs a ****** thing like that?!" He muttered.

Grieves tapped against the pounded stone and earth as he walked face to face to a six foot bust of Ryugi Kazamaru. He'd heard the dragon knight was in this tournament, but looking at the statue, he couldn't help but chuckle, poking it's face. The dude looks like a clown. And hear tell, he'd be up against this guy's team mate. "Is this guy serious?"

Track 1: Short Change Hero

The Dervish approached the battlefield, jacket flapping behind him as he came towards the... surreal sight of a carnival of death. Not that it really shook him. He'd been a participant in Heaven or Hell enough times to know not to be surprised by anything. His signature headphones were playing the first track of this year's playlist, reminding him of all the struggle and conflict the past few months had brought him. It was a harsh reminder that this tournament was not to be taken lightly - and heaven help anyone who didn't do the same.

He approached his opponent in the ring as he was commenting on the strangeness of the Ryugi statue. "You get used to him after a while." He drew Sharvashtyr from its sheath and began twirling it in his right hand to warm up. "Oriel Abbey, I presume?"

4Avatar of Virtue

Oriel spun in place, the muscles at the base of his ears adjusting them forward, flattening out the canal. In ages past, this might have made his focus of forward noises more clear, but evolution had not been kind to the shape of a Troikan's ears. Or, at least, not this one. His left reached downward, slipping against the hooks of his shield, his right reaching across to draw his longsword.

"That would make you Stephen Lasanti. It's a pleasure to meet you." Oriel's voice shifted from flippant and dismissive to a rather attentive, albeit low timbre. "Before we get started, I just wanted to say. I really loved your work in Twenty Ten." His sword leveled above the ground, his shield stabilizing. "So, I'm quite pleased you accepted my invitation."

"I've never exactly been one for long introductions and whatnot, but it seems like I ought to, you know? Something about proving my worth or showing my mettle or some s**t. But..." His arms rose, light catching the sword sideways. "Hell with all that, right?"

-Preparation and introduction-

5Sutiiven

"I wasn't aware I had a fan, outside of Karin anyway. I suppose there will be time for proper introductions later."Stephen ceased twirling the blade in his hand and looked his opponent in the eyes. If Oriel care to look, he would see a tired determination behind them, but just as easily notice that they bore no hatred towards him.

"Understand that this is strictly business, but I intend to kick the ever loving crap out of you. So don't hold back, mkay?"

His left hand would reach back and pull the secondary short blade from its sheath and inverted it so that it was more suited for blocking, and without another word came in to attack his opponent. The short blade would attempt to clatter against the sword in Oriel's hand and push it across the Troikan's front and out of the way. Stephen would then follow up with a quick strike with Sharvashtyr and cut across the right side of Oriel's face.

To some, a cheap shot.

To him, Heaven or Hell had just begun again.

"I would have it no other way, Sir."

Stephen was faster than Oriel by no small measure. He was about the same height, but the weight difference, not to mention their equipment imbalance, was all quite considerable. And the fact that he was on top of the troikan in no time flat was certainly a solid indicator of aforementioned dexterity.

The clash was spectacular, calliope music sounding off with the shatter of sparks into the air. His opponent's sword kept his own paired up, his shield rising to catch the scimitar just a second too late, the blade jamming downward, the blade scraping into his face. An inch to the left and Oriel would be half blinded, an inch to the right, he'd be missing an ear, and a quarter inch deeper, it would have been a pretty short match.

His shield scraped upward slightly, protecting his face from further damage before the fighter recoiled within himself, arms and sword crossed over his upper torso and head before a flash and a roar. The flash came from the belt of steel and monster pelt, and the roar was Oriel's own guttural shouting as his arms shot outward, exerting enough outward force to make anyone standing on top of Oriel with a pair of swords like they just took a small car to the torso.

In the air, the warrior's gauntlet tightened as he brought his sword back down in a mighty, crushing blow, aimed for the man's legs. The screech of air torn open in the blade's wake was grating, and served as the smallest bit of warning at the last second.

Stephen got shot back a ways as he was steamrolled by Oriel's sudden burst of strength. He would take the force and go into a backwards dodge roll, giving him just enough space to avoid the large blade smashing down on him.

<Oh ho!>, he thought. <The pointy eared one is stronger than he looks. But it will take more than brute force to put me down, boy.>

Sheathing his short blade, he turned towards the Ryugi statue next to them and jumped up on the the life size model of Ragnarok in its hand before gracefully jumping off of it in a back flip over Oriel's head. Twisting mid air so that he would land facing his opponent, he focused his energy into his free hand and came back with a brutal blow of his own, making sure to keep Sharvashtyr ready to defend incoming slashes.

Quote:** Wrote:

Shattering Strike: Stephen focuses his spiritual energy into his hands in order to deliver a punch or palm strike that produces significant concussive force. The force of the blow creates a 5 ft. knockback effect against anything under 200lbs, usually with intent to throw an opponent off balance push them away from him. Against anything above the weight limit (or bolted down, etc), the resonance of the energy will cause a wave of damage to course through the target, causing them to roughly feel as if they had run straight into a brick wall. This inflicts physical injury on living targets and will cause structural damage on inanimate objects (potentially shattering them outright if made of glass, wood, simple stone, etc). 3 SP. (Spiritual Ability)

The punch would be aimed around Oriel's kidney or gut, depending on what side he was facing when he landed. While it likely wouldn't do any significant damage to the man's armor, the buckling of the steel against flesh during the resonating wave would likely leave the pointy eared lad in a world of hurt.

"OourraAARGH!"

The crack against his back sent a shock wave of pain against his back and his feet trudged however slightly forward, his stance supported by his sword now dug well into the soil. As the dragon scale and leather padding began to settle once again, and in that instant, he would snap backwards, his arm snapping toward Stephen's head. The bulky head of a steel shield just under 30 inches across was poised to slap Lasanti clear across the jaw.

Leaving his sword dug into the stone and woodwork of the floor, Oriel turned to face Stephen full on, shield at the ready. His sword, great though it is against tanks, was useless against a wispy guy like the Dervish.

CLANG

...Oh my, that was unexpected.

The dervish reeled back slightly as he took a shield bask to the face. Shaking his head to get the world to stop spinning, he grunted and regained his composure.

The fighter had left his sword in the ground, likely a smart move due to Stephen being the dexterous p***k that he was. The kid was smart, no doubt, as usually the Dervish was the only one willing to leave his weapons on the side as necessary to kick tail. It was a shame that the Troikan's head was the only properly unprotected part of his body, because focusing it with his attacks felt a bit dirty.

Oh well, all's fair and all that.

Stephen came in and tumbled past Oriel on the side opposite the shield arm in order to get behind him, then (eager to return the favor) spun around to bash the pointy eared man in the back of the head with the pommel of Sharvashtyr full force. Assuming Troikan physiology was similar enough to humans, this would likely stun him for a moment.

And hurt. A lot.

Had Oriel still had his sword, this would probably have been a very bad place for the fighter when up against the far more agile warrior. But he dd not have his sword. As he tumbled around, Oriel's knees and hips twisted to his right, his shield thrusted out and away from Stephen. His right hand twisted to his opposite hip, drawing from a sleeve his sister's Kris. As the pommel of the sword came up and swooped past his nose, his arm would snap out and around. A sharp whistle of cutting air, bringing the blade down for his enemy's shoulder in a direct stab.

Aha! The pointy eared gremlin did have some moves other than "Tank 'n Spank"!

Stephen grunted as steel pierced cloth and flesh into his shoulder, and decided that he was quite finished with the current state of this particular round of close quarters combat.

Stephen slapped his free left hand against Oriel's armor and fired off his Shock Shell at point blank, causing him (and hopefully the fighter) to go flying. He tucked and rolled to try and cushion some of the landing, but the sudden force made it a little difficult for even him to stick it 100% properly, tweaking his arm and getting some dirt into his fresh wound.

However, it was a small price to pay for getting his space back.

THOOM!

No chance to respond to a point blank shot to the back, Oriel was thrown forward. His fist tightened around his knife, ripping it from the wound as he flew, curling his left around himself as he hit the carnival floor and rolled. His weight gave him momentum, and rolling over and again before settling to his knees some distance away, struggling to his feet. "...Well, s**t. That was pretty damn cool."

Upright now, he shifted his arms, releasing his shield from his left hand and picking it up in his right. He let his left hand stretch, crackling his knuckles inside of his gauntlet before looking to his side. The Neck Breaker was behind him, a dizzying menagerie of spinning seats that revolve at a near murderous speed. But in front of that, a plaster statue of Ryugi Kazamaru. The Heaven or Hell committee must have a serious fetish for the guy, one that Oriel took some perverse pleasure in defacing at he cracked the head with a palm strike, gripping the now freed dome in his now freed left.

"Tell your boss I said hey!" To cross the distance, Oriel would chuck the head up just once before reeling back and pitching the bust of the Dragoon, which hurtled through the air in Stephen's direction.

-4/10-

-Oriel is hit with the shock shell and sent flying, eventually rolling to a stop and standing-

Oh my, the lad was a bit stronger than he looked.

After rising to his feet, Stephen got to see a large stone head flying at him. He panickedly dove out of the way of the Ryugi head and landed next to a paint bucket lying haphazardly next to a half-finished booth touting "Find Out When You Are Going To Die by the Great Wizard Maximos." Mumbling something about "the black b***d wouldn't tell fortunes if his a depended on it" Stephen stood and grabbed the bucket.

Turning to face his opponent, he charged, getting up to about 5 feet away from Oriel and chucked the bucket with a "HOO-AH!" This served two purposes - one, to splash paint in the fighters face and hopefully throw him off for a while, and two, because he felt that the man in armor deserved a reason to be called "Buckethead"

[SP] 8/10 (+1/Turn)

-5/10-

14Avatar of Virtue

He hadn't expected the head to do much, but it was a decent little time waster. While Stephen's agility had Oriel whipped, the experienced warrior had one fiercely problematic weak spot that the Troikan had spotted. For the first time since the fight started, a flash of white teeth gleamed beneath a wild smile.

The Dervish raced forward, crossing the gap until the eight foot mark when Oriel broke forward. Any further, and the paint would be too heavy to fly, any closer, and it'd be too thick to make a difference. And that was the idea. Between eight and seven feet, Oriel thrust himself off of one foot. It might have seemed like a bullrush, but he was no shield fighter, and no berserker. His movements were focused, and careful.

His shield shot upward, streaking outward to clap against the mouth of the bucket as he met Stephen head on. A brilliant blue paint crashed out, appropriate against the gold hair and red coat that typified Lasanti, a complimentary shade against Oriel's cobalt on midnight armor. Hell, if frozen, it'd probably be something worth hanging on the wall, Oriel thought.

A swing came from below. The shield and can and paint and sparks were dashed from his mind as his left hand came screaming from below. Having been hidden until he shifted his shield, Stephen had no opportunity to see the small ring crafted from tungsten. Not that it looked like tungsten at the present moment. It looked like a screech of translucent violet light, like an amethyst comet aimed for her ribs with a force near double the strength of his outward swing when they first clashed.

-5/10-

-Oriel rushes forward, slapping the bucket shut and throwing it aside with her shield-

-Oriel follows this up with a point blank swing with his fully charged Ring of Ram for Stephen's lowest set of ribs-

15Sutiiven

SMACK!

"GYYU-"

Stephen attempted to shout from the surprise of being punched full force in the chest like that with a ring of ram, but the air was nowhere to be found. Paint splashed everywhere as the bucket scattered off in all directions. Indeed, a sight to behold, but one the dervish would not get to view properly as he went careening backwards and flopped back on the ground, gasping for air.

Once he managed to get some semblance of oxygen, he would roll sideways in the direction of Oriel's unshielded arm, and pull himself to his feet, grunting in pain and rage.

"Sonofa... That hurt, you pointy eared b***h."

The look of anger large smirk started to crack on his face, turning into a full on grin. A delightfully demented, masochistic, battle hungry grin.

"Do it again."

Drawing his short blade in his off hand and readjusting Sharvashtyr in his main, he flourished and spun the weapons elegantly in front of himself before pointing the scimitar at his opponent.

"Come at me with all you've got!"

The smash worked like a dream. The Ranger went soaring in the direction of the forward momentum, and his poor footing sent Oriel back on his heels. A graceful tumble back, no one would ever, ever claim it to be. But for a smashing slap he managed to run backwards, slamming against and through the railing around THE NECK BREAKER before digging his feet in.

Wood shredded around his boots and grieves, and he smiled. His shield hand moved across his chest, adjusting the straps on his dragonplate, his smoking fist sizzling from the impact. He was far from his sword or knife, and his shield, armor and side were all covered in the saturated color. He turned his back on Stephen for a moment, much to the chagrin of one of the operators of the rides.

Fists gripped around a thick emergency lever, a hefty piece of steel that was nothing at all like a sword, aside from being a length of metal with a sharp tip and a rubbery grip. Peeling it back, bolts and screws failed entirely to resist the man's brute strength as it snapped from it's base

He turned back. Through the shadow of a damaged Tilt-O-Wheel, crushed railing, broken planks, and a whole lot of ruined paint, narrow slits practically shown with a bloody satisfaction. Between the two of them, there was at least a little bit of broken bone, more than a bunch of bruised organs."Ya like that, mother ********?" A backward swing again and again as he stepped out. "Need a bit more?"

-6/10-

-Oriel stumbled well back from the blast of the Ring of Ram impact, smashing through the NECK BREAKER-

-Oriel resets the armor on his arm so that he could move again and rips out the emergency break of the ride for a makeshift weapon-

Stephen came in low and he came in fast. The short blade would come in to block and push away the makeshift weapon while Sharvashtyr -

  • would go clattering to the ground.

Stephen was no stranger to abandoning his weapons at a moments notice if it could give him a better advantage, and he had done so here to free up his hand in order to smash it up against Oriel's face and grip it hard.

Oriel would have little time to react, as the moment his face was grasped he would receive the man's signature move to the face, causing a concussive blast that would rock his world and force Stephen's hand to launch back. Stephen had already protected his eyes by squeezing them shut and looking away once he gripped the man's face. However, if Oriel had no idea what was coming he would likely be caught off guard enough for the full effect to do its job.

Nope, Oriel decided. He was quite tired of blocking. Dodging suddenly felt quite a bit better, sweeping backward to keep his 'sword' free from Stephen's as Scarvashtyr crashed down into the floor, and Oriel knew what was happening. He had asked Stephen to come. He was a fan. Hell, the man had been his sister's ex team mate. And a signature move has a way of becoming known for it's third year running.

Swinging around, he brought the brake shaft down with a thick whoosh. He had no idea if he made contact with skin, because any connection to flesh or bone, that satisfying crunch of shattering someone's appendages was totally useless when you're bringing several pounds of iron on a flash bang. The second the metal came down, Oriel turned his face into his rapidly lifted shield arm.

Kuh-THOOM.

The bar slapped against his shield as his grieves ate wood, and he righted his hand immediately. Whatever distance was between the two of them, Oriel closed as fast as he could and swung once again. With any luck at all, he'd bring the bar in on flesh this time. He was looking to put the Dervish out to pasture.

There was little Stephen could do against his armored opponent other than be knocked away by the metal bar in a move that could only be translated as a "b***h, PUH-LEEZE." And oh, did it hurt. The full force of the bar shut him down hard and fast, causing him to all but drop instantly.

His spine was not happy, and the rest of his body was aching from the sheer force of the blow. Assuming Oriel was the blood thirsty type, he could easily end the fight by curb stomping the Dervish while he was downed.

But you know, it wasn't all that bad. In fact, Stephen seemed quite happy.

"Hahahahaha... About damn time, kiddo."

He would roll over onto his back, and look up at the armored opponent, grinning from ear to ear. "This fight was decided from the start. I don't do well against armored opponents. Not enough weak fleshy bits to exploit. Once you realized how to deal with me, you shut me down."

He smiled and rested on the ground, looking at his opponents face. It was young, fresh, looking to become someone. It kinda reminded the man of himself when he was younger. Man, time had passed... seven long years he'd been at this gig, and it filled him with a warm fuzzy feeling to see a new generation of up and coming fighters ready to kick a** and take names.

"I concede defeat. HoH might be all about the most brutal combat Gaia can find all wrapped into one neat little package... but I know when I'm straight up whipped. Good game, mate. I look forward to watching you do well this year."

Oriel's wrist twisted, stabbing the jagged bar's end into the ground, which left it to reverberate noisily for a bit. His shield was next, and he got to one knee. "In fairness, fast opponents are a b*h, man. It's the only reason I picked dragonhide over full plate. Too many fast folks around." His hand extended, offering to get Lasanti off the ground. "Besides. You know how I function now. So you gotta last long enough to take it out of my a in the finals, m'I right?"
