Heaven or Hell: RE-Union - Round 3

Team Mountain vs. Team Silver Dragons

Dwarf E Fort

General - This large room has been filled with flashing lights, clanging sounds and ringing bells, arcade machines almost as far as the eye can see (including the hot new Rage V 7: Revenge of the Avenger machine), and something that resembles a school cafeteria immediately in front of an auditorium stage with an animatronic band playing poorly composed music. The band consists of a giant bat, an anthro pig, a dwarf in a horned helmet, and Robot Kazamaru (which was apparently a leftover prop from the set of You Bet Your a**!). There is also a large pit filled with hard but hollow plastic balls on one end of the room surrounded by a mesh net.

Natural Element Resource - Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah) Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah) Fun, fun, fun, fun Lookin’ forward to the weekend

Weapons - Skii-balls, telescoping plastic lightsabers, pint-sized basketballs with a keg of rum graphic displayed on the side, scalding-hot pizza, and anything that can be bought with prize tickets.

Bonus Effects - Though there are no rapscallions running around on a sugar-high between arcade machines there are several awkward teenagers in giant foam dwarf costumes throughout the area. Don't worry, the costumes are well protected enough to offer complete protection against most types of attacks and hazard pay is good for helping these youths save up for their college education. There is also at least one inexplicably-attractive-teenage-girl walking around with a camera that will take your picture for two dollars.

"That one didn't feel right, how about this?"

Click.

"Yeah, definitely better... but I don't like this light. I think the crawl tunnel up there is casting a weird shadow, let's try over here."

Click.

"Did you feel a breeze just now? Are you sure my hair isn't messed up? One more."

Click.

"And one with the dwarf. Say 'Lali Ho'!"

'Uh... Lali Ho."

Click.

"Great," and the anonymous teenager in a foam dwarf costume was shoved out of the frame; stumbling in those oversized, box-like shoes to keep from literally tripping over his own feet as he was pushed out of the way of the tournament participant who had been having his picture taken again and again for over ten minutes already. "Now one together!"

The young fighter, probably not much older than the inexplicably-attractive-teenage-girl, stepped in beside her and threw up the peace sign for optimal photobomb posing.

"...I can't really aim the camera like this, you know..." She looked back over her shoulder at him with a somewhat exasperated expression. He'd been finding some small thing wrong with every photo she had taken so far and wanting to do it over, and it was starting to get really annoying. This was not worth $9.50 an hour.

"It'll be fine, I have complete confidence that we look great right now."

"...o...kay..."

Two young people, two awkward smiles, a pit full of plastic balls in the background.

Perfection.

"...so are we good now? Done, yeah? That'll be two dollars."

"Of course, of course!" The young man began digging through his pockets, the sound of loose change jingling as he did so.

"Per photo."

"...oh. Sure. I, ah..." The jingling stopped, and the young man from Mountain pulled a handful of quarters and game tokens out of his pocket; fanning them out in his palm with the brush of a thumb as he counted in his head, and then started counting on the fingers on his other hand as well. "Just one second."

Turning back towards the main area of the building the young man loudly shouted:

"Hey Rayner! I'm gonna need to borrow like... 35 dollars!"

3Ira Moonblade

> "Heaven or Hell! The first round was traumatic, yet dramatic! Silver Dragons team, led by Omi Barsait and given janitorial duties by Moonblade the Elf, was a hard fight set of battles. Behold!"

A tiny head popped out from the ball pit. The young Ira Moonblade knew that her cunning disguise was flawless! No one would expect the princess to be sporting a commoner's jacket (designer name though; she had standards), hat, and over-sized glasses! Nobody except anyone who has ever seen the child before in any capacity; Ira changed outfits probably three or four times a day, which is what will happen when you give a ten year old unfettered access to your credit card.

"My dad-- uh... The girl put her hand over her mouth for a moment, interrupting herself. She must be subtle, else she'd give herself away and likely end up grounded! "Moonblade is not an elf! He's a human-cue-lace." There was a giggle from the small child as she ducked back into the ball pit; she was clearly an expert at this infiltration thing. "That means we're mooooonsters~"

Still, her jet black hair and purple eyes were in stark contrast to Ammiel's silver hair and green eyes. The little heiress regularly boasted to her peers that her father altered his own hair for public appearances, but considered her hair already perfect. She didn't quite understand why he didn't just keep his hair its natural color to begin with, but who was she to argue?

4Sins of an Angel

Haelikor Wrote:

> And so. Omi lied in wait.

Of all the places that the RNG Gods could have chosen to throw her and her teammates into - a child's arcade room complete with loud music, flashing lights, noisy game machines, a network of slides and crawlspaces and of course the classic ball pit - was relatively unexpected. The lack of miniature humans screeching and running about was not so surprising. It was still a tournament arena and having unsupervised munchkins running around while people were trying to beat the snot out of each other would have been a lawsuit waiting to happen.

However, that meant there were no little brats to judge the redhead for acting on her inner child's instincts by clamboring through the network of slides and tunnels. Despite being a full grown adult and moderately tall, she was quite nimble, her flexibility and knack for manuevering through small spaces saw that she wasn't getting stuck as she climbed through the brightly colored plastic tunnels.

Other voices were noticeable, even above the sounds of the game machines. Some she determined were outside the climbing tubes and somewhere around the arcade, others seemed to come from within the massive structure she was crawling through but none in particular were very distinct, that she could tell. Ryke kept on until one of the tunnels opened into the ball pit. She was presented with a rope swing to effectively launch herself into the pit, if she didn't wish to just dive in haphazardly, and swing she did. She grabbed hold of the rope and propelled herself across the pit and let herself fall wherever gravity determined. Even if that was right on top of any hidden snakemancers...

show spoilerhide spoilerCustom gBuds: Ryke improved on an existing design for her own personal uses. These devices fit around the ear, with an internal piece akin to wireless earbuds or your typical bluetooth, they were designed to be less bulky while still being functional and would be no bigger than most modern hearing aids. Their non-combative function allows them to wirelessly connect to her portable music player (her gPod) and stream her music of choice. They have a secondary function of protecting her ears from extreme sound/noise. After a certain decibel they kick in and dampen incoming sound to avoid damage to the inner ears/ear drum. Additional status effects are reduced by half but not eliminated.

gPod: A small, black, portable music player that fits nicely in her pockets and connects wirelessly to her custom gBuds to play her tunes. The device is protected by a shock absorbing reinforced case to guard against impact and is resistant to extreme temperatures much like the goggles, but can last up to 10 minutes before damage becomes evident unlike the goggles. The gPod’s secondary function, besides playing music, is to interface with the HUD inside the goggles. Having the GUI/interface built into the gPod is not ideal but she’s still working out the finer details of her new tech. This allows track information to also show up on the HUD while in use.

Blast Goggles - A pretty resilient pair of goggles that serve her well inside the garage as well as out. They fit over and across the eyes and provide protection from the elements, such as wind, dust and debris. The polycarbonate lenses are strong, shatter-proof, fog reducing and provide 99.9% UVA/B/C protection.

HUD Display: Normally the HUD provides information useful to her occupation, as they were designed to assist her in the garage but have been tweaked to offer assistance in the ring. The HUD has different features. First, they work in conjunction with her gBuds and will display track information for what is currently playing on the gPod. Non-combative function.

Shlurp.

A man in neon-green motorcycle gear painted with streaks of silver, carrying nine aerosol cans, knuckle dusters and a stun gun, slurped on a slurpee in the arcade. His attention was almost wholly directed at the screen before him, where a virtual spacecraft zoomed through a background of inky black massacring vibrantly coloured aliens. Bob was killing time before the start of his match playing a video game, and more importantly, he’d just achieved the highest score. One handed.

"Dude, stop with the ******** foot sweeps!"

At a vintage Heaven or Hell 2006 arcade cabinet, a fancy hat-wearing magus smirked. Player one was our hero, Ammiel Moonblade, where as player two was some teenager in a dwarf suit, though the head had been removed so that he could see the screen better. The young upstart thought he was so suave, trying to beat Ammiel by picking the vintage members of his team. What ace card did he bring to the table to counter such a fiendish ploy?

Ammiel didn't really play video games, but he could still mash one-button specials in 'assist mode' to abuse the wonky balance of Team Glacier's roster. Glancing over towards the ball pit in the middle of the match, the magus frowned as he watched his daughter scramble from the ball pit in a frenzied panic as two full grown adults attempted to pile in. Omi had too many balls in his mouth for his muttering to be understood at a long distance, but Moonblade made a mental note to stomp his vice captain's a** later.

Also, Ira was grounded.

Looking back at the screen, it appeared that the magus had come out victorious by pure chance; the developers decided it would be a great idea to give Vahn a huge advantage on block with virtually every attack. Pointing his thumb down with disapproval, the small sprite Vahn turned his back to the screen. "TCH--! LOOSAH!!!"

Pretending to stifle a yawn, Ammiel offered his opponent a slight bow. "Well well well. Looks like I'm juuuuuuust too tough. Better luck next time, kid~"

KER-CHUNK

A silvery metal-looking-plastic lever rebounded up to the set position as the red marbles distributed from the top down through the clear plastic pickets, falling into place among slots at the bottom of the game's display. The balls stacked up and occluded little pictures of what could have been elves and different animals lined up within each slot. The row of elves and pack animals formed, perhaps, a caravan of sorts. Beasts of burden lead by their fey masters into the mountains pictured in a distant background where great bearded faces were carved among the stone. Inexplicably, the mule in the rear was loaded somehow with an elephant in a wooden cage.

The machine spat out a handful of paper tickets to a square and squat dwarf of indistinguishable old age. He added the strip of tickets to the fat stack won previously and clutched in his brick of a left hand while the right pushed a faux gold coin back into the game.

"Yes, yes. All the wood eating bastards."

KER-CHUNK

Another rain of red balls onto the elves. Not readily apparent, the goal of this game seemed to make sense well enough to the dwarf. He stroked the silver plait of his beard, spoke around his empty hand. "Just like old times."

"At least one" implied there could be multiple and what do you know, there were! Wearing black pants and the shirt provided by the establishment, this one was caramel in skin with freckles on her cheeks and down her arms, crystal blue in eye color, and platinum blonde hair covering black, the mass pulled back into a ponytail. She also had pointed ears and a blonde-and-black tail. She also seemed to be taking a break because once a dwarf-clothed kid was taken off the game, she stepped up and pulled her placeholder quarter from the top of the cabinet, putting it into the machine.

A nod to her opponent and she chose a team of Lazenca Miranda, Reiko Sakagami, and after a couple seconds of deliberation, Athan. She hadn't looked at the previous match and hadn't heard the exclamation declaring cheapness, but decided to put Reiko first in her final order before random select chose the Cocktower for their stage.

"Haha," she chuckled, "I haven't played this in a year. I didn't know this place had this, until today."

It was a good thing that the stage had been cleared of children- the workers, assumably, were instructed and capable of moving very much away once the fights started so as not to willfully become collateral, but in a place full of bright colors and flashing lights and sounds any children would have been all but guaranteed to run right through the middle of ongoing combat at some point. No, they’d all had to be kept away.

Which means that Rayner had been on the phone trying to explain to the babysitter how to tell his own troop that, to the sounds of what seemed to be outright rioting in the background. Not that they’d been thrilled about not being on the wooden deathtrap with him, though the empty field with fog had been an easier sell. But missing out on the action their mother had regaled them with stories of for years AND the chance to spend hundreds of dollars fostering an early gambling addiction for the reward of $15 plushies?

He winced at a scream that simply should have been weaponized through the phone, turning around to the demands of yet another child under his watch-

“Thirty--! --one sec, Tel- Tel, just take ‘em to that overpriced icecream place with a million toppings on th’ card and lettem wreck the room, they’ll pass right out. Just do not say they can come ‘ere after, it’ll be a damned miracle if no one sets the place on fire and I don’ want’a have to drive all the way to Gambino for the nearest one in the morning. No, Tel- I gotta go, Anson’s calling-”

Gloved finger pounded the hangup button frantically before the next volley of screeches in the background could begin, putting the phone away as he stood, abandoning his slice of cheese-and-tomato over soggy cardboard, which was somehow STILL too hot to eat despite that this place did literally nothing else about it right. Wiping his gloves off on his pants, the scarred man pulled out his wallet, just pulling out $40 for the girl with an apologetic smile- that probably looked a little less than comforting, what with the scarred side of his face not liking to respond as much.

Well, he’d gotten Anson to talk to girls, that was a step forward. Probably should have coached him on talking to em before the half hour photo tour of the premises had begun.

“A’ight kid, think that’s good, gonna have to pose for the other cameras soon ‘nuff. Now where’s your si-”

The flat joke was mercifully interrupted by a whooping woman-child slinging through the air beyond the thin netting, causing brightly colored, noisy mayhem out of which the ranting man popped up again, quickly starting on another stream of… god he had thought the nonsense screaming had been going to stop when he’d hung up that phone. He frowned, staring a moment before he looked back to Anson.

“Well. I guess it‘s time we got this show on’tha road.”

Bob was sort of half paying attention to the hubbub in the arcade. At the very least he lazily glanced over between levels as Omi emerged from the pit of plastic balls, flaming snake in hand, babbling something or other he couldn’t quite catch. It drew his attention to the man and boy next to the inexplicably attractive photographer briefly, before a buzzing sound announcing the start of the next level dragged him back to the arcade game.

“Well loooky here, we got ourselves a biggun’.” Bob whistled in anticipation of the boss fight he was to engage in against a large amorphous blob in a motley of colours shooting lasers across the screen. He dodged nimbly this way and that, or rather his little spaceship did, his brow furrowing in concentration as he slowly raised the straw of his slurpee to his lips. His intense eyebrow activity caused the goggles he was wearing to shift on his face and scrunch up a little, giving him a particularly nerdy visage. At least, somehow even more so than usual.

Suddenly, Bob was struck with the feeling that he was supposed to be doing something other than playing an arcade game. He couldn’t quite shake the feeling, and it was throwing him off his game. At one point he even considered using two hands, as his little ship came close to destruction at the hands of space mines. Oh… right, he was supposed to be fighting someone or something.

“If you’re here for a fight fellah I’ll be right with ya, just give me a second would’ya? Just gotta bag myself this biggun…”

11Psychofish

Rayner's head turned aside- then back to Anson. Guess the guy was a fighter after all. Just another victim of all the bright lights and beeping noises filling this place up and making it a parental nightmare. Though learning, upon acquiring smaller humans, that ballpits were apparently a disgusting menace or some such, it could have been worse. Apparently his childhood had secretly been as deadly as his adulthood all along.

"Well, I'll just withhold quarters and he'll be done 'ventually. You wan'im, kid, or gotcher eye on someone else?"

New plan for reassessing the place- anyone who wasn't a dwarf potentially on the other team. Maybe even that guy in the fancy outfit that he had DEFINITELY been bagging for a mascot until a minute ago.

12Akako Akari

There was an insistent voice cracking at every other word as a prepubescent youth nagged at the daiyokai who was currently perched on a table facing the ball pit. Apparently, it was against food regulations to sit on tables, but Akako remained stoic, her gaze impassive as she observed the rest. While she watched, she tried to make sense of how she landed herself in this predicament, to begin with. The memory was fuzzy, but she knew that Omi had been involved and oh, how she disliked him. It was too late to back out now and it would be more entertaining than watching how she'd done during the first round.

"Ma'am, please... It's aga-", the boy dressed in a ridiculous costume immediately silenced himself when the demoness's gaze averted to him and narrowed.

"Insolent," the single word fell from her tongue laced with enough venom to make the boy take a step back. "This One will not take orders from a welp. Leave."

The child sputtered before turning around to search for backup. Meanwhile, Akako remained perched on her table, one leg crossed over the other. Behind her, her nine tails swayed idly while the white triangles on her head faced forward at attention and twitched only occasionally as she caught various conversations. Her lips pursed in annoyance as she glanced towards one of her teammates, the one with aerosol cans. What was his name again... Rob? No. That wasn't right. Bob, maybe? He seemed to be focused on a game rather than getting on with it.

Akako let her attention drift to the others. Nothing was really happening and not only that but the entire team hadn't arrived yet. The demoness lifted her hand to cover her mouth as she yawned, her ears pressing back against her skull as she did. Blinking her eyes open again, Akako let her hand fall to her lap again. With that, she returned to people watching.
