Nathair Nimhe

DESCRIPTION

On the lee side of the Mythril Mountains, dominating the region between that toothy range and the coast, lies Nathair Nimhe. The sky above the swamp is coated an iron grey with rain heavy clouds, storms that couldn’t quite make it over the mountain range south of them. Rain falls in sporadic bursts, the fresh waters from the rain and the small mountain streams saturating the land until only small bits and pieces still stick up above the water line. Stagnant pools of water and slow moving streams coat the land and provide homes to the multitude of creatures there, the cool climate and the constant saturation keeping dead trees and foliage around for a very long time and filling the air with the scent of decaying plant matter. Strange cries fill the air during the night as various animals awaken and begin their hunt for food, crocodiles the size of buses croaking into the air, the splash as large catfish surface and dive back down. Bats flit through the air, and the air is thickly coated in bugs. Trees groan and crack as the Native Trolls begin their own search for food, shouldering their way through hanging moss. In the darker regions though, even more dangerous creatures lurk in the murky water. Those that have traveled to this region claim to have seen a many headed creature moving swiftly across the terrain, thick scales covering its’ back the color of the swampy water, and venom dripping from its’ mouth. There are many dangers in the swamp, but it is whispered that a trove of treasures is there for anyone to claim should they be brave enough. At the end of the Mountain Pass that one must take to enter the region is a small home, settled on the edge of a small canal. Little more than a 2 bedroom home with a front porch, it contains all that a one Damion D. Headley ever needs, as well as being a location to leave his bike while he is in the swamp.

LOCATION

North west of the Mythril Mountain range, against the coast and northwestern edge of the mountains

PEOPLE

Swamp Elves: Yes they exist. These flighty creatures range from 4 to 5 feet tall and their skin seems to be a distinct brownish green to better help them match their homes, nestled in the root systems of tree’s on the few ‘islands’ in their region of the swamp. Their hair is long and thickly clumped, resembling weeds when they hide in the water, a fact which they help further by adding twigs and leaves and other vegetative matter to their hair. Unlike their high elf brethren or forest elf cousins, Swamp elves are almost barbaric in their habits, led by a Shaman or Witch doctor, they fight amongst themselves in small tribes, fighting for territory with primitive shortbows and spears. Despite their lack of technology, few races can claim to have a greater understanding of stealth tactics in swampy regions or anywhere truly. Shy of outsiders, if they seem outnumbered or outstrengthed, these tribes have no issue with running away from the intruders into their realm.

CLIMATE

Due to the constant presence of rotting vegetative, the air is always humid and warm, despite its’ northern positioning. At night, the temperature drops several degrees, but never drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

FLORA

Cyprus trees fill the landscape, thick root systems working their way through the water and creating small havens for little fish and other creatures to house in. Typical water weeds rise out of the muck of the water beds to the surface, bright flowers like lotus floating on lily pads throughout the region alongside river reeds that line the dry ‘islands’ in the swamp. Spanish moss hangs on long drags from the tree branches, in some place obscuring vision completely, and small berry bushes cling to life along the water lines.

FAUNA

Trolls: The trolls live primarily in a region to the far east of the swamp, along the coast, where a great hole in the ground lays. While not extremely intelligent, the trolls are hardy and powerful while still protecting their territory. They do not roam far from their hole, and seem to be the only creatures that Jormungandir the Hydra tolerates.

Giant Crocodiles: Exactly what they sound like mates, crocs’ the size of buses. Not entirely unkillable, but good like sneaking up on the ********.

Giant catfish: Not to be a broken record, but more of the same here guys, big damn catfish that live in the deeper pools, 10 to 16 feet in length with mouths large enough to suck in small children whole. Wouldn’t go swimming if I were you.

Giant Snakes: As with most watery regions, you have a nice mix of poisonous moccasin style snakes and giant crushing pythons. Generally not dangerous, they run from creatures bigger than they, but when antagonized they will attack.

Creeping Eaters: Odd creatures who seem to be a mixture of animal and plants. Vaguely humanoid in shape, they seem to be masses of vines wrapped into the shapes of arms and legs, with thorns extending from the fingertips and toe-tips. They possess no mouths, but instead feed on their prey like plants, draining nutrients from a corpse and then moving on. Luckily, they are not numerous or particularly deadly to the average Gaian.

Jormungandir: Where this creature came from no one is honestly aware, but that it is dangerous is undoubtable. From nose tip to tail tip the Hydra is the length of 2 charter buses and all muscle mass. As of now, 8 heads dominate this creature, writhing through one another as they search for intruders and food. It’s den is the deep hole in the center of the Troll lands, and it is there that many treasure hunters find their doom in its’ fangs. While such creatures are normally very dangerous, Jormungandir seems that much more so, a vile intelligence driving it and guiding it in fights and life, while also helping it to live far beyond what any Hydra should. Damion can sometimes be seen riding this creature in seeming patrols.

RESOURCES

Aside from creature bones and decaying plant matter, there is little to be harvested in the swamp. Legends of treasures unfound bring groups of treasure hunters occasionally, although most that enter don’t return to speak of what they found. Those that do tell of the Hydra and of a man shaped creature that dwells there now.

MYTH/LORE

It was said that in the past the Swamp was a thriving city of elves, with their own imports and exports and gods all their own. They grew very powerful, as elves were want to do, and very soon their chief god became as corrupt as they were, wallowing in their own self importance until at long last their god seemed to abandon them, thrashing in his home below the temple and bringing the city crashing down with it. Waves roared in, rain fell as a deluge upon the land and soon the ground was flooding with the waters of the sea and sky, and the people were lost. Some remained and their story was lost, but the remainder became the Swamp Elves, and they seem to know more than they are willing to tell. Who this God is or what treasures are buried below the swamp, no one knows.

2Eternal Dirge

The iron grey sky above was pregnant with rain, the edges of the clouds dark and threatening to unleash a torrent down upon the land. Wise creatures saught refuge from the coming rains, small lizards rustling the leaves as they fled, birds stirring the air with their wings before they huddled down into nests.

Some creatures just didn't care. The giant creatures that called this land home settled in, eager for the cooling rain to fall in their always warm habitat, ready for the fresh water that it would bring and the strange minerals that leaked from the mountain streams.

And then there was one, a man infact, who did not care if it rained or shined, did not care if a hurricane was blowing around him. He only cared about one thing currently.

" Why the ******** am I here?"

His voice lifted to an uncaring sky and the cold steel of the motorcycle below him, Damion stared out at the steaming swamplands, and pondered. his elbow settled on his shining handlebars, his hand cupped an otherwise smooth chin, and he pondered. For you see he had not come to this place with any plan in mind, had simply felt a need, a desire, to come to this place. But beyond that he was at a loss. The creature inside of his collar and his soul had not spoken to him on his journey, and he simply felt the tug and desire to go deeper into the marsh.

But he wasn't so sure.

Certain dangerous creatures lived in swamps, he could see one or two from where he sat, and as strong as he was he had no desire to take them head on at the moment. No point to it.

But the desire was still there, a pulsing, hungry, needy thing that threatened to drag him out into that deadly realm. His feet itched to walk, his body ached to sink into that warm water, to swim through the water and be as the other predators. And his resolve was slowly dying.

Over his leg swung, setting down on the ground with a thump as Damion stood proper on the ground, sighing softly. Off came his riding jacket, sinking into the side bag of his bike with a thump, to be followed by his shirt with a softer noise. The elemental bent, laces coming undone in short order until finally he was down to his simplest cotton pants, a belt, and nothing more. Easiest to hide and move through the swamp, thought He.

3Eternal Dirge

Strange Bird calls floated through the gently steaming air, adding a chorus all their own to Damion's movements. He had done quite well so far, the water feeling welcome on his skin and the few times he had to climb onto land and move he moved with a preternatural silence, making little sound before moving back into the water.

And it felt right.

For many creatures new to a realm, Swamps are depressing places, the smell of decaying vegetative matter an ungodly stink and the sounds of unseen creatures moving unsettling but Damion felt as if he was back home. He slid past giant crocodiles who sat motionless in the water, he hitched rides on the slow moving catfish that moved across the bottoms of the waterways, and he took his prey like the animals around him, bursting from the water in a sudden explosion of violence or slipping out quietly to sneak up on the small deer that called this realm home.

Those predators that did see him gave the elemental a wide berth, staying far away for fear that they would be next. Muck clung to his skin and leaves and twigs became tangled in his hair, and damion did not waste the time to clear them away, simply moved on deeper into the water realm.

He had not yet slept, the day passing swiftly it seemed although with the cloud cover it was hard to tell. He had no wish to see the sun, did not miss its' presence at all, and found momentary refuge in the deep shadows made from tree's or bundled under mounds of leaves. Questioning how he knew to act in such away was not on his list of things to do either, a fact in which the Dagon inside of him was well pleased and worked to keep.

It watched through his eyes, it tasted with his mouth and breathed with his lungs, returned to a world it had thought lost. The smell of decay was better than the smell of brimstone. The cut of branches was like the gentlest caress after the suffering caused to him in the levels of hell. To say that it felt affection towards Damion would not be wrong, but it was affection in the same way that a Master feels affection for his favored dog.

And so they crawled through the muck and the mud together, deeper to some unseen location, unthinking and uncaring at the moment.

Further on, the Hydra stirred.

4Eternal Dirge

The ground did not make for a good bed. Infact, it made for a terrible bed, unyielding, cold most of the time, and the pillows were normally rocks. But for the weary and the worn, it was the only refuge, and to those that knew how, it was better than the softest of beds.

And to an earth elemental, it was constant home.

Damion nuzzled deeper into his pile of leaves, one arm cocked to provide a pillow for his head as he slept. No dark dreams bothered the elemental, no sneaking hunger threatened to drive him back into the world of the wake. No, instead he floated on shadows, unware of the activity around him.

A trio of swamp elves crouched around the slumbering elemental, peering down at him as if he were a rare gem. Which, to their xenophobic realm, it seemed he was. They made no threatening moves, however, simply watched as he slept for a time before zipping off into the dark of night, moving on light feet.

5Eternal Dirge

" You'd think the sky would change or something..."

He spoke in low tones, crouched down low behind a trio of rotting logs, the decaying vegetation unmoved from where they had fallen. He had slept here the night before, and the tromping of heavy feet had woken him rather rudely. Then again, trolls didn't know much about Manners it seemed, and Damion was forced to peek over his makeshift cover for amoment, regarding the bent backs of the trolls across from him.

They were gathered around the now torn carcass of a swamp deer, the poor creature nearly stripped to the bone by their sharp claws and even sharper teeth. Up close like this, their skin was even more repugnant, appearing rubbery and wet, with odd pustules and warts jutting from their skin. Long greasy hair clumped together in strings and hung from their scalps, as if they had stuck weeds upon their heads in some weird camoflauge.

Damion sighed softly, his voice lost amidst the sound of flesh tearing and the wet smacks of the trolls. His instincts told him to leap out and attack, but something told him that wouldn't work with these creatures, they were too big and savage.

"Perhaps..." He began, before turning slowly, looking into the water with a smile. Down he slipped, sinking into the water as quietly as he could, disappearing into the murky depths as if he belonged there. Damions fingers found hand holds in the muck, gripping tree roots, bones from long dead and eaten creatures, and at times firm ground. Before long, he was just below the Trolls and their meal.

Despite the murk, his eyes could see almost perfectly, the dark depths revealing their secrets to him as he focuses on the muck around him, feeling it's shifting nature, how it conformed to nothing and took no shape of its' own. He would change that.

Green eyes closing, he pictured tentacles, rising from the depths, and the earth answered his call, the muck around him rising slowly in foot thick tentacles, slithering towards the sky through the water. As they neared the surface, they moved faster, erupting in a spray of filthy water, snaking towards the Trolls with frightening speed.

The creatures were taken completely by suprise, their yellowed eyes widening as the swamp seemed to rise up to devour them, their mouths gaping as trendils of muck wrapped around their arms and legs, dragging them towards the dirty water. Thick claws scraped in the mud, slashed through the tendrils, but to no avail as they were pulled under and silenced, dragged into the muck to die.

And in the depths, a creature stirred.

6Eternal Dirge

The wonderful thing about underwater travel is that the surface was so rarely disturbed. Fish, snakes, and other creatures could pass underneath you without ever knowing it, a fact that Damion appreciated.

Which was why he was doing it.

The muck of the canal provided poor hand-holds, but the earth elemental made do, moving through the water like a slim projectile. To most the murky depths would be similar to walking through a maze without lights, but Damion took turns as if he had spent his entire life here. He turned around obstacles that weren't there, swam up to avoid walls that had long ago crumbled away.

He was following a floor map that had long ago ceased to matter. To his minds eye, store fronts and homes slipped past him on either side, their doors open and wares out on display. He saw no one because they were all at the temple, preparing for a word from their god. Chanting echoed in his ears, floating down the ages. But the world was silent underneath the water, and no one worshiped anymore.

He stopped for amoment, head cocked, as a giant catfish fled at his presence, muck rising in a cloud before settling back atop his body, hands propelling him along after the creature before their paths diverged. Damion was close to his goal, could feel the old power that saturated the temple deep beneath the ground.

Finally his path forced him from the cool busom of the water, his feet settling then kicking off the mucky floor, sending him shooting for the surface. Water splashed all around as he erupted out, startling several deer and sending them scattering into the underbrush. A low throaty chuckle found its' way out of his chest as he climbed from the water, straightening up slowly, anti-freeze green eyes raking the island.

" There."

He spoke softly, although it wasn't needed. Hundreds upon hundreds of eyes were focused on him, the dark brown eyes of the tolls unblinking. It seemed like every member of every tribe had gathered there infront of the pit, poles with different emblems showing the allegiance of those beneath them. But for now, they all focused on him, each one settled firmly on their knees, various poorly made weapons settled infront of them.

And from a thousand different throats came a low hum, a song with no words, a hymn for the damned and desolate. Damion felt the urge to sing along with them, to fall to his knees and join in their song. Words floated unbidden into his mind, painting the landscape with harsh colors, everything more vibrant than before.

And beyond it all the Pit gaped wide, wind howling over the opening but never entering.

His feet began to drag him forward, at first stumbling and then walking steadily, his back straight, his head lifted. They parted ranks before him, shifting backwards on their knees until he was past, closing up behind him. With his attention so firmly forward, Damion could watch as the first of the Hydra's heads cleared the lip of the Pit, hissing softly to itself before it was joined by the others, each one as big as Damions' torso, venom dripping from their open mouths to burn against the ground. Jormungandirs body lifted further, pushing the heads until they rose up high above Damions still form.

The two guardians eyed one another, the human standing proudly before the monstrous form of his fellow guard.

" Yourssssss are not mineeeeee...."

Each head spoke in unison, their hissing forming words, a statement for Damion to understand, to know. He nodded as way of reply, his voice seemingly lost to awe, or perhaps there was just nothing to say. The beast began to back away, shifting sideways to clear a way for Damion to move, for him to enter the Pit.

" Gooooo...."

7Eternal Dirge

The stone walls were covered in slime, glistening black in the blue light that eminated from Damion's collar. He was alone down in the dark depths, his only companion his gem, the only noises the steady dripping of water from the corridors and the steady splashing of his own feet through the ankle deep water that filled the temple. The smell of salt water and decay hung hard in the air, almost choking the earth elemental with its' stink. For now though, even the splashing had stopped, Damion standing still in the arching doorway that led into the church area proper.

Rows upon Rows of stone pews were lined up on either side of the central walkway, once ornate and imaculate and now dark with slime and pitted with age. Water dripped from the high ceiling, falling the great distance to splatter on the stones. The once brightly lit stained glass windows were now dark with the muck that covered them on the outside.

" ******** me...."

His anti-freeze green eyes combed the high ceiling as the light from his gem went out, dropping him into darkness. Damion did not notice, the world around him still illuminated dimly, the world revealed in different shades of black and white. As his view drifted from the ceiling down, the stark white form of bone became visible.

The spine rose high into the air before dipping, diving down from near the ceiling to the stone alter down at the very end of the pathway. a full 8 more spinal columns arched into the air, each bent at a different angle to fan out, all 9 of the skulls settled around the alter with the centermost skull settled firmly on the alter.

A low whistle slipped from Damion's mouth as he started forward, the responding echo alien to his ears, the splashing of the water echoing back to him as a lower noise.

" It is here that they payed homage to me...here that they bowed before me in all my glory. I was their god, I guarded them, gave them direction, I led them and in return they venerated my most prized of servants, venerated me as a god uncompared, gave me regular sacrifices from the bounty of the sea."

The deep voice echoed from all around the elemental, Damion jerking and dropping to a crouch to look around.

" When my soul was removed and my body driven mad, the temple and city were destroyed. This is all that is left of my proud land. This is the first of my guardians, the first to guard me in my material form. Jormungandir took over when Asmodaius died here, to large to fit through the corridors anymore. As they were the guardians of my material form, I need not have a guard of my soul."

He backed slowly towards the altar, looking around the room with wide panicky eyes, hands grazing the mold covered pews on either side until with a thump he bumped back first into the skull of the Hydra, jumping upright.

" I languished in the hells, having to fight once again for my position as Lord. I burned, I bled, and I made others hurt as I did. And then, when I was finally in a position of comfort, you and that.....MAN pulled me out and forced a union between the two. But there is no use fighting over such a thing, you'd lose and I'd be sent back. So instead, you will be my guardian of the soul, as they are the guardian's of my body."

He didn't hear the soft shuffle or the whistle of wind before the club cracked into the back of his head. His knees folded and he crumpled twisting as he fell, eyes rolled up in the back of his head, staring sightlessly up at the ceiling. He was at the mercy of the Deep Ones, those who had remained in the fall.

8Eternal Dirge

Dark colors swirled in the darkness of Damion's vision, royal purples, blood reds, deep blues, all mixed to float through his vision. Voices spoke to him, not in a language he could understand, but a low silibant hissing noise, rising and falling in a cadence that formed words and feelings. They painted his mind with visions of shadows and sudden deaths, flashes of light and the gurgling of the dying.

His body was alive with agony, cool air blowing on bones that shouldn't have felt it, muscles stripped and layed bare to the hot breath of the Deep Ones. Cold and clammy hands gripped his arms steady as steel sliced open his skin, pinpricks of pain amidst the fire across his skin signifying when they began to sew him back together. Dimly aware of what they were doing to him, he slid back into silence, wanting the pain to end and finding solace in his unconciousness.

When he woke again, his skin no longer burned, pain no longer flooded through his body, the only sensations being the cold stone on his back, soothing in its' familiarity, and the rough feeling of hemp rope around his wrists and ankles, now loose. His skin felt raw and chafed beneath the bindings though, and he knew he'd struggled in them, but for how long was lost.

A world of whites, greys and blacks greeted him as he opened his eyes, the high ceiling of the cathedral still as bare as it had been when he first arrived. The air was less moldy now, less dank, carrying with it the smell of ungents and powders, of incense burned and the rank smell of burned blood. His nose wrinkled and he recoiled slightly at the sent, feeling tense muscles strain to cooperate with him. With that first pain, the rest of his body woke up, bones grinding painfully in their stiffness, muscles tense enough to cause shooting pain through his body.

A low groan dragged itself from his raw throat, the only sound in his cavernous prison, echoing back from the corners of the room to mock him as he began to test his bonds gingerly, finding them undone and easily escape-able. Without rising, he reached his arms up and out, wincing and whimpering softly at the shooting pain. He felt like a stranger in his own skin, his limbs reacting in ways he didn't think possible. Everything seemed more graceful, his arms gray snakes in his vision as he examined them.

Where before bulky muscle covered his bones, now sleek muscle rippled and flexed beneath his skin. The white remains of scars slipped down his skin, the remains of his unasked for surgery, a souvenir he'd never lose. His fingers looked longer, more dexteretous, and the limbs they were attached to reacting more flexibly than he thought, the muscles rippling oddly. All thoughts of pain fled him as he slid his hands down their opposite arms, feeling the slick feeling of his skin come away under his touch.

Rough ridges marked where the deep ones had cut through his skin, opening his chest up like a corpse. His hands trailed down his stomach, feeling the new, redesigned muscles there. Instead of slabs, they seemed more lean, more like what a hunting cat would have. Were a cat in human form. Damion sat up slowly, groaning softly as his back and stomach protested. A long, slender tongue slipped out to run across his lips, tasting the salt there, the blood the had dried. These flavors were sharp as he finally reached a sitting position, seeing the rest of his body lay nude below him.

Whatever else the Deep Ones had done, they had remade his body into something foreign. He hadly looked like a normal human anymore, his limbs slender, sculpted, the skin edging more towards grey and heading towards black, a charcoal grey in his vision. " Buh...wuh...uh?" His voice refused to react properly, tongue and lips feeling clumsy. Damion swung his legs sideways off the slab, the stone rasping on his sensitive skin. With a push, he fell into the water, legs collapsing under him as he cried out.

The cool water felt welcoming to his hands, soothing the pain he felt as he rested there on the ground. His breath came in low pants, the stink of blood coming up with each puff of air until finally he had regained control, reaching back to set his hands on the slab. Groaning in pain, he forced himself onto his feet, pain blasting anything from his mind until he had gotten to his feet. Facing back the way he came, he could now see the 9 skulls of the Hydra again, set next to one another infront of him. The center most mouth was open, revealing rows and rows of gleaming white fangs, their edges dark to his eyes. The mouth was large enough to swallow him whole, the front teeth large enough to make swords from, the teeth slowly diminishing in size until they were big enough to make knives, or ornaments. To the right of this skull stood a robbed figure, his body hunched, his hands infront of him, holding out clothes of some sort to Damion. He could not see the figure inside the robes, only knew that it meant him no harm.

Halting steps carried him around the stone slab, each one painful to an extreme until finally he stood infront of the bowed figure, finding himself taller than it was even if it had straightened up. The hands were webbed, Damion noted as he pulled the clothes from the creatures hands, using the stone altar as a support. The 'clothes' consisted of a pair of pants, some kind of odd vest, and a pair of boots, each one dark as midnight in his vision, each as smooth as the softest cotton. The boots seemed to be made of some creatures skin, somewhat rough yet supple, and fitted themselves to his feet perfect, covering the bottoms of his pants up to mid-calf.

" Wuh?" Damion grunted at the man thing, words coming closer now despite the pain in his throat. As way of response, one arm moved, the rustle of clothe sharp in his ears, and pointed at the wide maw. From the hooded head came a series of low hisses and gurgles, bringing to Damion's mind a drowning serpent until the image was replaced by a mental picture of those same fangs, but in his hands, gripped as one would grip a knife, redesigned to resemble trench knives, flashing through the air.

" Oh....they want me to take them..." He turned back towards the fang lined mouth, moving into the wide maw cautiously, watching the top of the mouth should it drop down onto of him. His fingertips glided over the smooth and slimy bone, stopping as he reached the back set of teeth, leaning in to examine them abit. They were about a foot in length, shallowly curved towards the tip, the forward edge very clearly still sharp after all this time. The tooth smelled oddly, and Damion once again found his nose wrinkling abit at the smell before he reached up, tapping the tip gently and yanking his finger back fast, sticking it in his mouth with frown. The taste of blood quickly entered his mouth from the now open wound on his finger.

The taste brought a surge of adrenaline to his veins, waking his body up further, banishing the aching muscle feeling. He reached out again, gripping the inside of the curve carefully and giving a steady yank, finding the tooth came away easily in his grip. " hnph..." Damion examined the tooth and nodded, repeating the process on the opposite side until he had two fangs gripped in his hands. He looked back at the Deep One, holding the fangs up in the air with a puzzled look on his face, as if asking 'these?'. The creature nodded slowly, the hood dipping some with the motion before it motioned for Damion to come out, the once elemental exiting the Hydra's mouth swiftly. His footsteps were fluid, barely splashing in the water, sounding more like water dripping than someone stomping down into water.

Glancing down at his left hand, Damion saw the tooth held there still bleeding, a rivult of the red stuff running down the creamy white blade to drip from the tip. " Frag...." He jumped, looking around swiftly before realising the voice was his own, the first intelligble noise he'd made since he woke up. His lips split in a smile, white teeth revealed in the darkness, his antifreeze eyes glowing brighter as his mood brightened. The Deep One began to walk towards the end of the Cathedral, the place where Damion had entered from, and he followed behind it without protest.

He could still feel the uncomfortable feeling of the Dagon inside of him, like his stomach was full, and for once it was comforting to him. Damion was led to the thick column that led outside, dim sunlight leaking down from high above, barely illuminating the ground. Thick vines hung down to the very bottom, waiting for Damion to grab hold and climb. " T-thank y-you..." He stuttered out to the Deep One, turning towards it only to find it missing, the robed figure gone and him alone.

Damion frowned abit, looking around slowly before turning back to the vines, walking over to examine it. He pushed his new fangs down into sheaths that seemed to spring from nowhere, careful not to slice his fingers open in the process before he grabbed onto the vines, setting his feet and starting to climb, finding his new muscles well suited for the job, carrying him upwards swiftly until the deep light of the swamp hurt his eyes, although it was no brighter than normal. Eyelids dropped down till he was squinting upwards the last stretch, hands grabbing the lip almost blindly as he lifted himself up and out.

And they were still all there, stretched out infront of him like his own army, their standards lowered in difference, every tribe of troll gathered before him bowed forward, their forheads on the ground, their arms splayed forward to the new king.

" ********?"

9Eternal Dirge

One second a drop. Each drop of water fell from the ceiling for exactly one second before hitting the ankle deep water that covered the floor of the library. He knew this because he had been timing it for most of the day, counting down in his head as he sat in a mold ridden chair, feet kicked up on the table infront of him, one crossed up over the other, and stared at the symbols on the page in his lap.

He had been sitting there for 3 days now. Damin was sure he should have been stiff by now, his stomach rumbling for hunger, his throat dry with thirst, but he felt nothing. His muscles did not ask for activity, his stomach was silent, and words flowed from his mouth like liquid silver. His arms were covered in black ink where he had been testing out the runes that made up his new book, each one possessing a single meaning, but each lacking the power they should have possessed. He'd come down here the day after he'd returned to the surface.

Which meant that each of those runes was atleast 3 days old.

A sigh, soft as a serpents hiss, slipped from his lungs and with a thunk his chair fell back to the floor, booted feet slipping into the water noiselessly. Whatever material they were made of seemed to aid in stealth, or perhaps it was just his newfound grace, but when he rose and walked towards the rows and rows of shelves, cubby holes, and scroll stands he was as silent as death itself.

His knives were stuck into the table he had left, their newly carved ends extending into the air like the fangs he had made them from. He was rather proud of them, the fingerholes perfect, the blade almost impossible sharp, and the weight easy in his hands. They too bore the same runes he'd been trying to put on his arms, although already these were a faint memory, melting away from the bone blade.

" What am I doing wrong?"

He was asking no one in particular, though he knew that one of the Deep Ones were around, a scribe who care for the books here. Damion knew he was doing the runes in the proper fashion, each angle as close to perfect as could be. But something was lacking. The runes he had seen Maximos make contained power, exuded an aura that let you know they did something. His were lacking that and he couldn't quite understand why.

" ******** it..." Damion snarled, slamming the book home into its slot and stalking away from the shelf, retreiving his blades from the table with a savage yank, splintering wood accompanying him as he walked away through the water. " I'll just kill things the old fashioned way." He muttered, spitting off to the side in his anger. The wall sizzled where his saliva hit, small wisps of smoke rising into the air as he strode on.

He would try the runes again later, he needed some way to occupy himself down here, until he felt it right to leave. His footsteps carried him through the labyrinthian halls beyond the Cathedral, putting his arms behind his back. " I'm the priest-guardian to a god of secrets, I should be able to keep myself occupied!" He suddenly roared at the ceiling, eyes alite with anger, hands clawed into the air. " This interment is unbearable!!"

He stood in the middle of the hallway like that for amoment, glaring at the dark ceiling before he resumed his original stance, hands clasped behind his back, a calm look on his face. One deep breath, and he began to walk again, heading towards the cathedral. He had to get out of there, it was driving him crazy.

10Eternal Dirge

With a grunt, he slotted the last log in to place in the floor, standing back to admire his handywork. It had taken him most of the night to gather the 12 logs, each as tall as he was, and well into the day to set them up down here, clearing away the destroyed columns to make up spots for the Logs, creating new indents to stagger each one.

An enemy would never line up perfectly after all.

Damion nodded in his admiration, reaching up to rub his chin for amoment, smelling the tree sap on his fingers before reaching down into the water and rubbing it away, cleansing his fingers of the stickiness. It would be an insult to his Fangs to wield them with dirty hands.

He moved to the entrance of the small room he'd commandeered, reaching down to slide his thumbs over the smooth grips of his blades. Each breath came out measured, a count of three before it was released until it came as instinct, smooth and even from his new lungs. Damion's eyes narrowed until they were half open, an expression of calm boredom stuck on his face. Internally, he counted down to 3 before moving in a black blur, the only noise his skirt rustling through the air.

A sweeping right kick, coming out from the far right then up into the air, driving at head level into the first log with a crack before he launched off it, knives an ivory blur, stabbing out at the log behind him, Damion's body stretched between them to the limit, his stomach muscles stretching before he snapped up, feet kicking him into a flip to smash into a log on the far side of the room, both feet coming up infront of him to slam into the imagined foe, snapping it at the base and sending him cartwheeling to the wall, launching off it in a spin.

His knives hissed through the air, slamming into two of the logs at what Damion imagined was throat level. As he hit the ground, a portion of the ground came up in his hands, a great sledgehammer, to smash into the nearest log, bringing his number down to 6 left. The hammers weight carried him around, and he lept, spinning in a barrell roll fashion through the air, pulling a knife from where it had buried out and around, slicing across the head level of another log, Damion following the spin to kick out into the sternum area of another.

His breathing remained cool an even, the only sounds in the room that of impact and the rustle of his robe. Damion continued his spin and ripped his second knife from the wood, leaping at the last percieved log, landing feat first to bury his knives into where he imagined the collar bone, his grip reveresed on the blades before he launched off again, kicking into the air to come down in a whirling fury, the last three 'dying' in a hail of cuts, blades a mellow white blur to his eyes. Splinters fly through the air to fall into the water, droplets raining down through the air where they had clung to Damion's feet.

" Done."

His voice was alive with tension, vocals quivering with barely contained malice and rage, his body shaking with the desire to do it again, to taste the blood of his foes, to know their fear. He wanted to cause that fear, to be the dark shadows in the night, to be the name that mothers told their children to make them behave.

" Yessssss....."

The words hissed from his voice like escaping tea from a kettle, carrying with it the promise of pain and bloodshed. But just as quick as it had come, Damion spun towards the door, the Fangs finding their sheaths, and his feet finding their motion. He would do it all, here in his swamp. For those that entered, he would be unseen death, he would stain the water with their blood and let them know they were not welcome.

11Eternal Dirge

" I think that's it..."

Damion ruffled through his small bag for what felt like the 13th time, making sure he had everything he needed. There was his money, there was a small bit of food, and that was it. Why he had to ruffle through it so many times was a mystery, but it felt like something was missing. For amoment, he simply stood there, scratching the back of his head in confusion before like a lightbulb going out it hit him and the Guardian spun on his heel in the water, walking over to the rows of maps against the wall. There had to be one that was updated amongst the bunch, and he pulled out the newest looking scroll.

" There, that should do it."

He smiled in his triumph, glad to have this momentary excursion out into the human world for abit. He'd have to come running back, but time out was time out.

Without much further pause and with all due haste, he scooped up his bag and swung it onto his back, letting it thump once before he was racing down the halls, running towards the chimney that would lead him out. He raced past corridors, black and white blurs, heading towards the dimly illuminated tunnel.

He didn't slow as he approached the wall, running up the edge for 2 steps before grabbing one of the many vines, using it to continue up the wall, heading towards the circle of light, his smile still wide and shining in the dim light. He'd only been out once since he'd come to the swamp, and that had been a short visit. This trip would likely be 3 days long. The swamp can fend for itself, he thought, yanking himself over the lip of the chimney and onto solid ground, taking off at a dead run once again.

The further he got from the temple, the softer the ground became, his strides extending as the ground tried sucking him down, muck flying out behind his steps. He cleared the stagnant pools of water, hitting the ground at a dead run. Tree's and branches were just obstacles, and the remade guardian dove through, between, and over anything he couldn't avoid outright.

It was excilerating, to put his body through such a test. Even if he wasn't fighting, it was amazing to be able to move like that. Before, he'd never be able to move in such a fashion.

12Eternal Dirge

" Maybe next time they'll listen and keep away from my bike."

Warm blood cooled on the wet ground, steam rising where the tempature shot up to appropiate levels. The stench was unimaginable, robbing one of appetite, but then what could you expect from troll blood? Damion sighed, pulling an oil stained clothe from one of the side bags on the monstrous motorcycle and began whiping clean his right fang, cleaning the greenish troll blood from it.

His visit to Gambino had been fruitless, and he was still without glasses, but it had let him visit humanity one more time before his guardianship proper and subsequent cutting off from society, atleast until Maximos called him in again for work. Which reminded him, " Where's my phone?" He checked the bag he had removed the rag from, before leaning over the bike to check the other one. Neither possessed the aforementioned cell phone.

" I wonder if he'll be pissed off? Probably not...hope a troll ate it." The elemental chuckled softly as he closed up the bags, gently patting the bike seat as he turned towards the swamp proper," Home sweet home I suppose." Unlike his exit from the swamp, his return would be much more muted, Damion walking in slowly until he got close to a canal. Although, he did enjoy alittle fun in life, and the benefits of living in a Swamp included tall trees next to your watering holes.

With an almost eerie speed, he scrambled up the tree, fingers finding handholds they might have missed before his change, taking him up and up and up until he stood a good 20 feet from the ground, perched precariously on the joint between branch and tree, a subtle groaning and creaking coming from the wood below his feet. A suicidal grin spread on his face, adrenaline poured through his veins like fire, and he slowly began to move forward, feet shuffling along the branch, his arms outstreched to maintain balance. He stood above the water, looking down into its' dark depths.

" BONSAI!!!" a leap, a rustle, a crack of wood, and down he dove, arms out wide to either side as he body first arced up into the air before beginning his descent, head towards the water, arms shifting to point straight down. And with a muted splash, he slipped into the water like an arrow, feet disappearing below the surface and his body lost to the swamp as he shot away below it's now rippling surface.

He didn't pay much attention to where he was swimming too, simply swam, the skirt wrapped around his legs to make him more torpedo like, the waters pushing him along the same way a hotwheels car went around the track, moving him forward through the darkness. It was peaceful down here, and with no one to bother him he could work on his water element abit, harness it alittle more than he was now.

The problem, or so Damion thought, was that his two elements were exact opposites in their physical states, and so the concept of control was different. With earth it was a simple matter of force, you MAKE the earth do what you want, but water was something different he couldn't put his finger on. It was fluid, changing, and thus it was hard to make it conform to one shape for long without losing focus of its purpose.

What he was doing now was easy, a simple circulation in a larger body of water was nothing, but if he wanted to do more it would require a fair bit of practice. He dipped his body slightly, going deeper in the water to avoid smashing into a catfish before rising swiftly again, resuming his mostly straight line.

All things with time he supposed.

13Eternal Dirge

Damion sat, high above his swamp, upon the branch of a tree, his legs kicking gently below him as he stared out over the expanse of grey and brown, no green in his rotting world. On his lap was a book, the thick leather cool to his fingers, despite the fact that it'd been out of the library all day. A red ribbon held his place in the book, and a sharp runic language was scrawled across the cover in shifting colors, deep reds and purples that hurt the eyes when you stared at it for too long.

Deep shadows rested in the Hydra's eyes, speaking of long sleepness nights, his exposed ribs speaking of nights, possibly days without eating. His heart was troubled, his mind so chaotic that it felt more like it was filled with cotton than brains. A thin blue smoke trailed up from his right hand, rising into the sky to join the clouds. Every so often he would lift the hand to his mouth and a bright point of orange would flare for amoment. Bugs that got too close to his body swirled lazily before falling to the ground far below.

His antifreeze green eyes remained focused on a far off point on the bright orange horizon, the only color aside from the iron grey of the clouds.

" So ronery..." Damion murmured for amoment before chuckling softly, bright white teeth revealing themselves in a wide smile, his canines elongated in a way that made the smile feral, hungry almost. Was he lonely? Perhaps, but it was more than that. His body had slowly begun to lose feeling, things that had once brought him pleasure lost, all but the adrenaline pump of combat. Even the Black Lotus extract he was smoking did nothing, his healing so advanced it killed the poison before it could so much as harm a single cell.

His throat burned with the smoke though, and the bright orange of the horizon hurt his eyes, reminding him that he could still feel things. Perhaps all this was brought on by what he was reading, this strange book of eldritch magics and pacts that could be made with elder creatures, strange mutations and the horrors that might come. Depressing stuff whatever way you looked at it.

" Pfff...." with a contemptuous flick, his cigar went flying through the air towards the water and earth below him, the swamp swallowing up whatever he didn't want anymore. Below him, the tree groaned, deep indentations left in it's rotting bark where some great force had impacted. There were specks of blood left on the wood, bright red against the black, still wet thanks to the atmosphere.

14Eternal Dirge

They danced around one another, two humanoid forms caught in a tangle of their own making. Spinning, whirling, gliding along they fought one another, a back and fourth came of cat and mouse in the perpetual twilight of the swamp. Their passing disturbed birds, scattered leaves, sent small animals running as one would gain the upper hand one moment only to lose it the next. The struck with fists and feet, swords and shields, hammers and flails, pulling them fourth from the ground and water. Dead wood shattered under their feet, sending splinters up into the air.

As they fought closer and closer to the water, the more they would disengage, the dark skinned humanoid leaping into shadows, hiding himself, and making the black one follow him in. At times they would disappear from normal sight, the sounds of their clashing bodies and weapons the only indicator of their passage.

At long last they burst fourth, a short trail of pure blackness following them, the dark skinned humanoid gripping the black ones arms, a thick bladed curved sword clutched in it's hands. They hit ground on an island, rolling for amoment before they split, leaping away in a flurry before rushing back again. A high blow ended it all, the large curved sword cutting high as Damion dropped and came up in a rising uppercut, an ivory comma clutched in his hand, cutting through the watery neck of his practice dummy, the construct falling to the ground in a rush, water spreading out below it.

Sweat ran down his face in near rivers and his breath was like the bellows, but his smile remained undiminished, a slash of white on his face. This had been an expirement, a test. It had been hard getting the construct to operate without his direct guidance, but he had done it. Already he felt the dull ache of a headache starting, pulsing with his veins, and the dull ache in his stomach that told of hunger. The rocks that had made up his construct melted back into the ground of the island as Damion started walking towards home, his Fangs sinking back into their sheaths.

He ran a hand over his body slowly, feeling the sweat acumulating on his hand and leaving his body dry behind it. Sweat was water still after all, and soon he had a baseball sized ball of it in his right hand, letting it drop back into the canals as he leapt from cypress root to cypress root, feeling the sweat start to build up again. It made him glad he hadn't worn his vest, it might have ruined it.

Despite his own internal musings, Damion could not mistake the noise of paddling for anything else, the rythmic splashing to familiar to be anything different to his ears. He froze, the picture of stillness as he cast his feelings into the aether of his swamp, feeling for the boat until he found it. With a splooshing noise, he sank into the water headfirst, letting the current carry him before he began to direct himself, zeroing in on the boat.

" We'll get that Hydra this time."

The voice was warbled under the water, and it was hard to understand, but Damion could still hear it, rough with a southern accent and likely years of smoking. The grey form of the boat was directly above him now, and he swam upwards, latching on to the bottom silently, his finger tips resting on the fiberglass bottom. It wasn't a large boat, but bigger than he could tip. A slow shift turned him around towards the spot that would hold a motor, the spot empty and perfect for peeking out.

His head slowly rose out of the water, just enough for his eyes to clear, and he peeked up at the three men in various states on the boat, one sitting, another crouched and yet another standing, an odd looking hunk of metal held in his hands. The guardian frowned and sank back down, drifting along under the boat as the paddles came down again, reaching out and grabbing hold of one before it could come back out of the water.

Onboard the boat, the men stopped talking for amoment, looking into the water before the rower stood up," Frag, must have gotten it stuck in some weeds." He gave a small jerk with both arms, hands clasping the oar tightly, before his jerk was returned, yanking him off and into the water, dragged beneath the surface as his friends cried out and began reaching for weapons. Alligator attacks are seldom quite, and thus there was alot of splashing made, despite the fact that the man had died the minute he hit the water, throat cut by the sharp bone Fangs.

" st! Oh st Jimmy!" a rattle of gunfire sent bullets scattering through the water, small spouts trailing them. Damion smirked under the water, hearing the cries of fear as he moved to the prow, slipping up and over swiftly, his fangs clutched tightly in his hands as he drove them into the back of his neck target, hooking them in the rib cage and yanking him backwards. He struck in a frenzy, the dark water turning darker with blood, feeling his knives rip flesh away, tasting the diluted blood on his tongue. It felt so good to let go like that, and the knowledge that he had one more filled him with joy.

More bullets rained down into his water realm, and Damion let the body go to float to the surface, the flesh of its' stomach waving like tatter cloth in the currents. His last target would require special care, and He kicked off the bottom of the boat for the bottom, clambering along like a malformed monkey, speeding up until he had reached the first bend in the river, knowing that the last man would follow the flow of the water. Out he climbed, clambering swiftly up the nearest tree until he had reached the first branch, hiding against it's bark. He could see the man with the gun, peering downwards into the water in the middle of the boat.

Perfect.

The boat passed soundlessly beneath his tree, the mans harsh breathing the only sound left in the swamp, rising like the sweetest chorus to Damion's ears. The bark crunched as he dove off, driving like an Arrow towards the man, his knives aimed forward, tips driving into the soft flesh of the other mans chest, rupturing out his back in a spray of blood as the gun went off between them, filling the boat bottom full of holes as Damion stabbed again and again, blood flying high into the air to come back down across his bare torso, running down the outside of the boat and pooling in the bottom as water rushed in through the holes, their vessel slowly sinking as Damion finally stepped back, panting heavily.

His ivory knives gleamed with wet, sticky blood, droplets dripping from their tips as it ran down his arms, painting his body in red as the body of his prey slipped into the water, an expression of shock permanent on it's face. " No ******** you..." He got out between puffs, looking around slowly before he slipped back into the water himself, swimming for home, his veins singing with adrenaline and the sweet taste of power.

15Eternal Dirge

Each breath rasped painfully in his chest, muscles burning with the strain of movement, sweat fighting to cool his body and dripping from his hair and nose. Arms pumping, feet thumping, he ran from island to island, using the Cypress roots of his water logged realm. No animals ran from his presence, he made no noise after all, and the water remained undisturbed by his passing.

A leap and his hands gripped a low hanging branch, letting his momentum carry him up and a kick of his legs send him thumping to the ground lightly, the tips of his feet digging in to get him moving again. He dove over logs, twisted between trees and launched himself into the trees to span gaps he couldn't jump over normally.

Damion didn't stop until twilight came, the dim darkness of his chosen home no problem to his eyes, color lost in favor of hard whites and greys, every object outlined for his eyes to see. Home was still a ways away, but he became a black blur, darting from cover to cover with the speed of a striking snake, diving and rolling to get behind trees, slithering into the cover of bushes on his body, sliding into the water and emerging again in sudden rushes, throwing sudden flurries of kicks at imagined enemy's.

His fists would blow chunks from rotted trees as he struck them on the run, hitting them in series without stopping. His knives became spinning blurs, leaving jagged grooves in the hard wood and throwing splinters into the sky where they twinkled like small stars in Damion's vision. The elemental dove through Troll camps, sending the idiotic creatures into flurries of motion until he was gone and running again, moving ever closer to home. It wasn't until he saw the warm glow of his home that Damion slowed, the small bits of glowing mold he kept to light the building throwing light back into his world.

His feet slowed until he was walking again, mouth hanging open to allow more air to flow, hands ontop of his head to allow for more chest expansion. Sweat ran down his body, finally allowing it to serve its function, his body cooling at a rapid rate, steam rising from his body in clouds. But on his face was a sliver of white, a self satisfied smile permanently focused on his face.

16Eternal Dirge

" No....no.....this one?" To those without darksight, the odd voice could have belonged to anyone, could even have been in their head. But to them who darkness held no monsters, it was just Damion, his hands drifting over the rows and rows of scrolls that lined the wall infront of him. The smell of mold was thick in the air, and dark black fungus grew on the wood of the cubbies that held books and scrolls alike, pulsing like things alive.

He pulled one dark ended scroll from it's cubby, unrolling it to peer down at the page, words snaking across it in the language of the priesthood. Small diagrams were set up along with the words, revealing the innards of a mans arm, splayed open for veiwing with lines pointing to key areas. A disgusted sigh later and it was back in its' hole.

" You'd think that after all this time they'd have a system to this...." He spoke to himself allowed when he was down here, better to stave off the lonely feeling the underground realm always produced for him. His hands skipped over another row of scrolls before he pulled out another random scroll and unrolled it, peering intently.

"HA! Beat the system, ******** you guys." A triumphant smile crossed over his face as Damion rolled the paper back up, feeling the pliant slimy feeling rub off on his hands as he stuffed the scroll into his bag, tightening the upper straps swiftly before slinging it onto his back. The past few evenings had brought odd dreams to his mind, and Damion was not one to let such things pass him by.

" I need to head north first....sooooo.....let's go." A rustle of clothe and he was gone, running through the temple with all speed.

17Eternal Dirge

The arrows made a hissing noise as they sliced through the air, cutting through the foliage like angry wasps. The whicker man that had been set up began to erupt into peices as the arrows shattered the supports, arms spinning free to the ground, shattering even further.

As the two arrows quivered in the trees behind the makeshift target, another two erupted through the torso, sending the upper half to the ground in a shower of dry twigs, thick arrows quivering in the 'spine' that had supported the body, splinters sticking out of the broken dowel. For moments, noting moved, no sound was made until Damion slipped out of the underbrush, a bow of bone and sinew held in his left hand. Made from the spine of a shark and the sinew of the hunting cat, The bow had the power of a longbow, an extension of bone giving Damion a place to set an arrow as he aimed it.

The weapon reflected light like ivory, sucking in the light and gleaming gently. A quiver of arrows rested over his back, multicolored feathers fletching the darkwood arrows, their stone arrowheads safely nestled down inside the sharkskin quiver. " Hm....not bad..." He muttered non commitantly, yanking the arrows free and slipping them into his quiver again, he tips just as sharp as when he had fired them.

Such was the gift of an elemental.

With a sigh, he turned towards home, moving along slowly and carefully, melting into the background like a ghost. His footsteps made no noise at all in the underbrush, slipping around the few dry branches that had fallen. But these were few and far between.

18Eternal Dirge

This land is hell.

This thought, above all others, kept the foreman running pell mell through the forest, smashing through foliage at breakneck speeds. They had come here, 35 of them, with the prospect of building a hotel out here ultimately. But first they had to drain some of the water from the land, and there the issues began as workers began dying. They had been small atfirst, one man gone the first night, no signs of struggle.

They had thought nothing of it, a disgruntled worker wandering away, until they had found his body the next morning, hanging upside-down from a tree, ankle jammed into a branch. The killing had begun wholesale then, arrows streaking into the camp from seemingly impossible angles, cutting down 4 men before they could blink. As people starting running, the earth itself rose up to drag them down, ripping them apart to bleed out onto the ground.

The Foreman had gathered up the nearest men he could and they had run from the site, sprinting along as fast as they could. Running did nothing to spare them, arrows elimaniting men as they ran, dropping them face first to the ground with nary a scream. Now it was just him, running from the thing that had hunted his men down, that had killed them so fast. Finally his lungs could take no more punishment, and his steps slowed to a stop. Leaning over, his hands on his knees, the man tried to catch his breath, looking backwards to make sure he wasn't being followed. Sweat dripped from his nose and beard, and for amoment he was blinded as it slid into his eyes, the salty liquid stinging painfully.

It was thus a suprise that when he opened them a dark skinned elf should be standing infront of him, a massive bow slung over one shoulder, an arrow being fiddled with in his hands. " I broke this...on your friends rib." It spoke perfect english, words flowing out like water, causing the Foreman to jump back before starting to run again, fleeing fast. Damion saw no reason to give chase, slipping the arrow back into its' quiver with a sigh. Better he let one leave in the end, carry the warning of his existance.

19Eternal Dirge

Felix flew heels over head and slammed into the bulkhead as --

BANG!

As fire blossomed --

Bang!

As fire --

Bang!

Damion lifted his head with a snarl, the silence that filled his dank and dark home broken rudely by a noise unfamiliar to its halls. The man sat as he normally did in his reading time, feet kicked up on the rotting table infront of him, a stone chair angled perfectly to keep him upright, and his book settled on his lap. He would sit there for hours in the silence reading, so wrapped up was he, but that silence that made focusing so easy had been broken by the incessant banging from the halls, the sound of crumbling stone a faint trickle to his ears and a deep impact in his mind.

" Who...dares enter my home uninvited?"

This was a rhetorical question, there was no one to ask after all. Booted feet sliding from the table to the stagnant water that covered the ground, a soft splash the only noise in the room now. His black pants just barely floated above the water, untucked from his boots, but even these made no noise as he walked, stepping from the vast library with a glare, peering up and down the hallway. Voices floated too him from the distant darkness, not the soft silibant hissing of the Deep Ones, but rough voices, voices belonging to men, voices belonging to thieves.

" I did not invite them..."

His frown deepened, turning his face into a snarling mask.

" Cor, can't make it qvuiet could yuz?" Lional hissed at the larger of his companions, crouched down on the other side of the crumbled stone entrance with knife drawn. Dress from head to toe in brown leather armor, he made quite the image of the wandering treasure hunter, the empty pack on his back just waiting to be filled. But these were secondary notions, if he even thought about it at all, and he was currently more concerned with waking up the entire temple thanks to his companions efforts.

" Well if you had found an easier entrance!" The larger of the pair growled back, his teeth bared in a snarl as he stepped over the crumbled stone blocks that had once been a wall, hammer held tightly in a double grip as his eyes swayed back and fourth. The darkness was complete however, and his normal human eyes could not peirce the deeper darkness of the halls, the sun rod tapped to the haft of his hammer lighting up only a small portion of the room.

The two men had heard of this place in a bar, as most adventures start out, lured with the promises of a gold filled temple, where the dangers were few and the traps nonexistant. It had all seemed too easy, but already the prize seemed hardly worth it, the group of 4 that entered down to 2 at the end. Trolls had killed one of their group, while another was dragged into the water by some weird plant tentacle. But the lure of gold is strong on the hearts of men and still they plunged on until they had reached the temple.

So far, of course, the place was not living up to standards, the mold covering the walls hiding only stone, no gold, and as they moved deeper into the halls the room they found were filled with rotting tombs, bodies, and furniture. The smell of the place was enough to turn your head right around, the rank stench of fetid water and rotting wood and biomatter. The two men were becoming increasingly frustrated the further they walked on, no treasures to be found and their own company to keep.

Lional paused in the entrance to another room, looking back the way they had come with a frown. He could swear that something had moved out in that deeper darkness, a flicker of shadow deeper than that around it.

" Hey, hold on Cor, I think I saw something."

Cor stopped in the middle of flipping over a small cot with his foot, the rotting cloth and wooden tearing and breaking ontop of his foot. Snarling and muttering, he walked back to his partner, the sun rod strapped to his hammer flickering as the magic started to die. " What is it?"

" There, shine your light there."

A brief ruffle of movement and the light was suddenly funneled like a flashlight, lighting up into the distance. Their path was suddenly thrown into sudden brilliance, as was the man who stood in the middle of the hallway, hands clasped behind his back and a look of frank annoyance stuck on his face. His skin was the color of dried mud, made all the more startling by the black clothes he wore, the vest on his torso open to reveal a muscular chest and stomach, no hint of scarring there. Even from a distance the green eyes of this sudden apparition were bright and angry, Antifreeze green and flickering, and the scarwork around those sockets was thrown into gleaming brightness even in the flickering light.

Both theives jumped as one, Lional's hands moving from the sun rod and throwing their range of light back into the immediate area. The man down the hall was thrown into darkness again, but only for amoment as first one black booted foot then an entire body stepped into the light, arms still clasped behind him.

" Who are you?"

The two treasure hunters were thrown to silence, mouths agape as they stared at the man. Across his torso the heads of snakes seemed to writhe and wiggle with his movements, and somehow it seemed they were all attached somewhere behind the man.

" I asked you a question gentlemen. Who. Are. You?"

Even as each word was spaced out, they didn't seem to be ready to answer, Cor's jaw working slowly before Lional beat him to it, "Who are you?!"

" That was rude, don't answer my question with one of your own."

There was a tinge of anger in the mans voice, something insidious that flowed through the words and gave them more life than they may have deserved. The smaller of the hunters shuddered and moved back, while the words seemed to have the opposite effect on the hulking Cor, his teeth bared in a snarl as his grip tightened on his hammer.

" ******** off! This is our treasure!"

" Your treasure? No, this is my home. Infact that is my guest bedroom you just entered, uninvited and unwanted."

The pair stared at the man, jaws agape. This was his HOME? No one had mentioned this temple possessing any kind of owner or guardian, and Lional was at quite a loss of what to do. Luckily, Cor was not burdened with an overabundance of brains and to him the course was quite clear, his hammer drawing back to swing before his diminutive ally could call for his pause. Roaring a battle cry, he swung with all might for the brown skinned man, muscles corded and straining.

Thus it was abit of a suprise when he hammer smashed first into the wall and stopped dead, a crater left where it had impacted. The guardian, however, was untouched, seemingly unsuprised at this course of actions. Infact he had even moved, arms brought to the fore, a curved sword held in each hand. the blades seemed to be pitted with rust or dirt or something equally fowl, but in the poor light it was hard to tell.

Lional blinked, wondering when the swords had appeared. What he did know was staying around was not in his best interest, and that gave his feet wings, sending him deeper into the darkness as all rational thought fled him. He didn't even turn when Cor's breath was released in a gurgling sound, the harsh splatter of liquid on solid a counterpoint to the hissing of air that stopped all too soon. His feet splashed through water and slipped on slime covered stone, his breath a harsh rasp that echoed from all directions back at him.

Lional ran until his legs cramped up, long since lost in the labyrinth of turns and rooms. Finally he stopped in a large chamber, what he thought might be the center of it all, standing next to a row of pews. Slowly he moved through the room, looking over his shoulder at every opportunity. A dim light trickled down from the ceiling, affording him enough light to maneuver by, the only room that had so far. His nose was bloody, his body bruised from running into walls, impacting corners, tripping. At long last he could go no further, collapsing in the pew closest to the pulpit, panting heavily and holding his sides.

How had the job gotten so botched? Lional couldn't understand where the man had come from, or how he could possibly have beaten Cor without so much as a struggle. With his head down like that, he couldn't see the dark skinned man enter the room, moving slowly up the center of the pews, silent as death. Behind him followed a procession of figures clad in black, their hands clasped together and hidden by their robes. As he stepped past the man, Damion reached out, tapping his shoulder, " You'll miss the best part."

Lional looked up with a start, eyes widening as the robed figures took up seats all along the pews, gleaming eyes peeking out of their hoods and wet, whistling breaths sound behind and beside him. A warm wetness began to spread across his lap as Lional whimpered, his eyes tearing up and his hands gripping the stone seat tightly. Damion moved up until he stood behind the pulpit, looking down on the assembled masses like a proud father, the soft smile that spread across his face making him look happy and hungry in equal turns.

" To those gathered, the benevolent father smiles down upon us. We gather for the knowledge HE brings. We are his faithful, and we give unto him our lives and our minds. But there is one amongst us who is unwilling to give up such things. The worship of our father is not something you can go back on, and so we must offer him unto the Dagon, that he will render judgement."

Damion stopped, pausing almost, before sighing, " Bring up the intruder."

Cold clammy hands gripped Lionals arms, and he screamed. He screamed for a very long time.

20Eternal Dirge

Eldritch symbols glowed brightly in the perfect Darkness of the temple, drawn throughout the circle that lined the middle of the room. They lit up the room and let odd shadows dance across the walls as they seemed to writhe in confinement, begging for release. Standing too close to it brought whispers to the ear, and those whispers were only caressing the ears of Damion H. Hedley, his eyes focused on the symbols as he pondered next to one of the robed dark ones.

" And you say they will obey my every word?"

He asked the small, hunched figure beside him, not looking away from the symbols. His mind devoured them, decyphering them as fast as any computer and locking them away. These were the words of Dagon, his holy scripture put into a form of power and the Elemental Guardian desired to know every intimate detail. He did not miss the nod from within the creatures robes however, and that brought a smile to his face.

" Good.....Call it fourth then. Call fourth my Rakshasa."

The words came fourth as a near moan, the sigh of a lover. Damion was ready, he was eager. A creature of the hunt, a mount to match his own skills and a sure symbol of Dagon's favor. This was the creature that would bear him into combat with those that sought to steal from the temple and guard it in his absence. His mind still focused on the creature, he missed the silibant hiss chant of the creature next to him. It rocked back and fourth, words of power spilling fourth from deformed lips hidden in the shadows.

Along the walls the shadows writhed in pain, silent mouths opening in just as silent screams. The symbols on the ground before them slammed suddenly into shapes, burning brighter in the darkness until they were near blinding. Not even then did Damion turn his eyes, gazing hungrily into the light as dark black eyes gazed back at him. the center of the circle disappeared, replaced by utter blackness and the hissiing of the priest was replaced instead by the sound of surging water. Cold tendrils of mist clawed there way from the hole as a massive paw burst forth, slamming down onto the water and stone infront of Damion's feet.

" Yess.....come to me....hurry now, there is work to be done."

Another paw burst fourth as Damion coaxed the creature on, it's skin glistening in the light that lined its prison. The head of the beast burst forth, catlike in shape and dimensions, but larger than even a horses head, thornlike teeth bared in a snarl as it dragged the bulk of it's form out, a second set of legs pulling out and pushing aswell until all of it had come through, filling the room with it's feline bulk.

" Rakshasa...kneel."

His words carried the weight of magic, a command that it could not deny, and the creature dropped down to its' belly before him, the snarl still on its' face. " Good girl.....come, there is much to show you."

His feet slipped easily on the water below him and Damion sped on out of the room, the great beast lifting itself up and then out after him, a great shadow behind the threat of the man infront of it.

21Eternal Dirge

The swamp shook with powerful footsteps, waves for the first time rippling across the water that stood in pools and birds flying into the sky in fear for the first time in ages. Trees screamed and shattered and a terrible path was layed out behind the walker itself, broken vegetation and huge footprints littering the ground. Thus it was no suprise that the possessor of such might feet towered well over the tree's, a literal giant in man shape.

Broad shoulders smashed branches off the upper sections of trees, massive hands ripped then from the ground to be tossed behind. The thick, rocklike skin ignored the predations of the swamp attempting to defend itself, sharp tree trunks stuck out where they would be stepped on and then ignored as the giant pulped them. Car tire sized eyes gazed hungrily forward as if it could see its' eventual goal already, driving deep into the heart of the swamp. So it would miss the shadows that followed it, two forms of unequal size moving effortlessly through the swamp in a way the giant could not. With a trail the size of a city street, it was easy to track after the beast.

Both shadows melted into one for a time as they burst out of cover, the giant feline form of Rakshasa suddenly alive in the twilight gaze of the sun. The giant continued blithely on for several steps, until the feeling of being watched caused it to turn slowly, ponderously, a creature unused to looking behind it. It's mammoth head swung around slowly, a dumb expression on its' face before a wizzing arrow shot through one of it's eyes, peircing those dark centers in a sudden spurt of blood and eye juices. A voice like thunder burst fourth from its mouth and into the sky to give noise to its pain. The rider and his mount sped past the stumbling giant.

With a thunderous boom the giant fell to it's back, water spraying high into the air as the massive head smashed into a pool of water. On it's back, it was no threat to the demon rider, a second then third arrow whistling through the air, smashing into the thick skin of the humanoid being and drawing thick blood from the wounds. The giant howled in anguish, struggling to rise to its feet and face this new threat. Such a long lived creature, such a strong creature, had never found a being who cause it so much pain, and the task before it suddenly seemed daunting.

It seemed even more daunting when the massive form of Raskshasa barrelled into the rising creature, throwing it across the ground to wrestle with the feline demon, howls of pain and roars of fury rising from the tumble in equal measure as they rolled through the swamp, tree's crashing to the ground under their bulk, slow moving animals crushed to pulp. Blood collected in pools from deep claw marks on the giants arms and chest, Rakshasa's strong jaws clamped on its shoulder as more arrows whistled fourth, turning exposed areas into pincushions as black fletched arrows shot from a twanging bowstring.

The archer ran across the ground after the rolling pair, shooting as he ran until he could catch up. " Rakshasa, go!" And suddenly where there had been a cat there wasn't anymore, the Giants arms outstretched to grasp at the space it had been before The archer appeared before it, perched delicately atop one log thick finger, an arrow notched back. Both stood frozen for amoment before the arrow leapt forth, striking like a lightning into the blinded eye, driving the arrow already there deeper like a snakes fang, seeking brain matter.

Where the arrows touched decay set in, flesh falling to gangrene and infection even as the giant roared and swatted at its attacker, The nimble archer, rolling over the hand to loose another decaying arrow into the giant humanoid face, rotting away at its' cheek with the sickly sweat smell of rot. The struggles slowed noticably as the creatures thoughts came harder, the energy to fight back came less willingly to muscles that just didn't exist anymore, the poisonous arrows delivering their destructive payloads with all the accuracy of an elven sniper at work. Where moments before there had been a threatening monster, there was now nothing more than a feable child. The dark clothed archer slid down the body until wet ground set under its feet.

The mighty demon Rakshasa leaped across the broken ground to its master, slowing the nearer it got until atlast it stood before the humanoid figure. The archer stroked the mighty cats head, looking back at the dying giant for amoment before crossing to it's waist, prying open a satchel as big as a suitcase, spilling its contents onto the ground for him to sift through, the bow set in the ground like a staff while one hand shifted gold nuggets away from the bones of a recent meal.

At long last it seemed the figure had found what it was looking for, pulling it free and slipping it away into the vest it wore over a bare torso. Black marks writhed like snakes over its' flesh before with a grunt it leaped onto the mighty cat demons back, letting the creature carry it away from the rotting Giant corpse, sinking slowly into the swamp.

22Eternal Dirge

The more you kill the easier it gets, and the easier facing death becomes, or so it is said. Even the most battle hardened killer would have a hard time looking past the scene that was painted across the small elf village before the Hydra, blood standing in pools so thick they came up to the ankle. Bodies were thrown in all directions, impaled on the few live branches that extended from the tree's, their blood long having since run out onto the ground. Others lay half in and half out of the tributary that incircled half the village, seemingly drowned there by whatever had attacked.

No animals had yet come to feed, the tracks of viperhounds circling the outer edge where Rakshasa paced, keeping ever vigilant watch for its master who creeped through the camp itself. the Archer moved along in a low position, his face close to the ground to inspect the battle marks that had been left. Arrows carried hints of blood, broken blades from the mountains litered the ground where they had snapped on impact, weaving a tale the vigilant hunter could pick out. This was the second attack from those giant stone monuments.

Tents and small wooden huts on stilts lay in various states of disrepair, great tears pulled from the leather of the tent walls, and huts laying half tipped over where the stilts had been cut out from under them. None had been spared, children and women slaughtered in equal measure and lined up in the center of the village, their parts fitted back into place. Undoubtedly the archer had done it, standing now infront of the great bonfire, one hand settled on the hidden chin and the other crossed to the former elbow.

The attackers were gone, no bodies left behind, no sign of who they had been but for the swords they had left behind. The men from the north had always harbored a healthy fear of the swamp, but now it seemed they had either overcome their fear, or found something to be more afraid of. The archer was stumped, at a loss for words it seemed, or atleast without a lead. Perhaps it was time to leave the swamp and investigate the villages of the north.

The man turned back towards the giant demon cat, walking towards it slowly, eyes to the ground for any missed clues. Nothing presented itself immediately, until he had reached the edge of the village. Buried in a wide bootprint was a glimmer of gold, the muck of the swamp already half burying the item. Out it floated, up and into the mans hand where he paused to examine it.

" Bael."

The voice, soft as a whisper, slipped out, and the cats mighty head lifted towards the voice. It understood something had happened to disturb its master, but the rest was lost to nothingness. The archer resumed his resolute march towards the cat before leaping onto its' back, booted feet kicking hard into the cats ribs and sending it leaping off into the trees and thicker muck of the swamp.

23Eternal Dirge

“ Are we there yet?”

The men were tired, their limbs exhausted after the long trek down from the mountains, but Krrl knew they could not pause to rest. This campaign against the Swamps to the south was important to their lord, and harsh punishment had already been exacted upon those who slacked off in his name. The 20 men around him however did not seem to share his fear of lord Baal, muttering and complaining amongst themselves as if this was their first time to war. He snorted at that, a weary smile crossing his face as he hopped over a boulder, careful to keep their banner from dipping down towards the earth. Their world was filled with the constant sounds of combat, the lord taking only the strongest of warriors from the tribes to live with him in the highest mountains. These men were just such people, killers and slayers in their own right, pampered in the halls of the mountain lord and sent down to crush the inhabitants of the northern swamps.

Briefly Krrl wondered what had happened to squads 1 through 4, sent out a week before for the exact same purpose. He had seen no runners returning to the gates, although they had seen the remains of camps set up on their way down. Even now, with the swamps edge clearly in sight, there was no sign of the other squads present. True, they were little better than the rabble he now commanded, but some discipline had to be maintained after all, right?

“Keep walking!”

The voice of their commander gave the men a small burst of sullen energy, their feet no longer shuffling, and each step taken carefully and with more speed than before. The space between the steep mountain side and the swamp itself was a barren empty space more than 300 yards across, a dead space claimed by nothing but the intermittent rivers and streams that cut from one side to the other. An archer deathtrap if there ever was one, but the Knights of Baal had no worries, fearless from either bravery or stupidity or some odd mixture of both. They trudged on beneath the banner Krrl held high, ignoring the random boulders that littered the ground as signs of their Lords favor. The very barren nature of the landscape could thus explain their shock when, halfway between both the mountains and the Swamp, they encountered the form of a man standing before them, a stone effigy of a knight in full plate armor, a sword stabbed into the ground before him and a shield resting against the blades hilt. With arms crossed over it’s chest, the knight appeared as a statue before them.

No lichen marred the stones, this was a fresh carving, and it bore even fresher scars, chips of stone busted away from the extremities, a dent set in the right arm. Someone had struck hard at this effigy and failed to destroy it, just as one of Krrl’s men was about to do.

“Wait!”

Too late, the muscular soldier was swinging his sword at the statue with all the strength his mighty muscles could manage, the strain evident across his back, the massive warblade whistling through the air with the collective gasp of the warriors gathered. For one blinding instant, the blade stood still, before with a sound like glass shattering it broke in half, pieces of steel shooting in all directions, impacting the ground like arrows. The warrior was left only with a hilt in his hands and the most dumbfounded expression on his face, his eyes fixed firmly forward at the space beyond the statue. What had caused such destruction, what could have shattered the warriors sword?

The statue had moved.

The left arm was now extended outwards, the heavy armor seemingly no hindrance to maintain that position as it remained frozen, hand curled in the shape of a C. A deep score marred the palm where the blade had cut in before being rebuffed and breaking.

“This land is my land,

No it’s not your land,

From the hill-capped southlands,

To the wave kissed north shore,

This land was made for me alone.”

Not only had it moved, it talked! The statues voice was low and solemn, no hint of emotion, reciting by rote words that fell flat to the ground infront of it as the stones ground together. The Knight bent at the waist, pulling the massive stone shield up onto one arm with a grunt of strain, the weight obvious on the humanoids arm. A yank tore free the stone sword, dirt dripping down off the blade before the knight pointed it forward, the tip gesturing back the way they came. Its message was as clear as day, they could not mistake what it wanted.

Which is likely why they pulled swords of their own, charging forward with battle cries of their own, swords swinging wildly over their heads and feet pounding hard. It was no secret that the Nathair Nimhe had a new guardian, but that the guardian could warp stone in such a fashion! Only Krrl gave this any thought, only the leader of these men, these barbarians, paused to wonder at the power before them. His men, in turn, struck as lightning, iron blades impacting on hard stone only to bounce away defeated, their weapons no match for the power of the very living rock. To his credit, the stone knight tried to defend himself, heavy shield and stone sword working in unison, defending, slashing, dropping men to the ground in heaps with each bonecrushing strike of shield or leaving men screaming on the ground as the sword severed their limbs.

Even so, the knight was not invulnerable, his armor dropping away in large chunks, revealing the fleshy person beneath it all. A paldron fell to a sword strike, the grieves over his legs collapsed from the strain and crumbled to the ground. Even his shield shattered under the strain, collapsing in one mass unit to break apart against the ground. Soon, only the knights helmet remained, supported by a straining neck. Much smaller, now that the armor was removed, and far less muscular than expected. In fact, he was built very much like an elf, far to slender to be a warrior from the mountains.

“Enough of this.”

One brown skinned hand reached up, gripping the bottom of the helmet for a moment before yanking it free, black hair cascading free. Damion’s hair had grown long, hanging around his face like a curtain, one antifreeze green eye peering out from the dark wave of hair.

“ Get out of my house.”

The elemental pointed back towards the mountains, right in the faces of those muscle-bound warriors, their mouths agape, eyes staring widely down at the man. Was he insane? Did he honestly expect them to leave? Apparently not, for even as he pointed the stone sword in his hand warped and shattered, splitting into two blades before their eyes, one for each hand. So he was prepared to fight! That was good, because they weren’t about to leave, at least not before setting fire to the swamp. They charged in, swords raised high and battle cries once more leaping from their lips, only to be cut short in wet gurgles. Where before he had been slow, now the Guardian of the Swamp moved with fluid speed, blades cutting throats or guarding against strikes with the same grace.

Even swarming him, the barbarians stood little chance as their strikes were turned against their fellows, iron blades cutting flesh while stone swords guided them down. Small nicks and cuts began to count up along his hands, leaving blood to trickle down over the stone blades, a grimace marring Damions face as he emerged from the press of bodies, Barbarians finally collapsing as they realized they were dead, blood collecting underneath them, sinking into the dirt. Like a vampire the earth soaked up the blood presented to it, taking life into it where none had been before and leaving the Hydra its’ champion.

And just like that, the only creatures left were Krrl and the Hydra, staring at one another from across the barren battlefield. Bodies littered the space between them, some whimpering and clutching at stump wrists, the rest laying limp in death, glossy eyes staring out in expressions of shock.

“ Go, go and tell your master I am here waiting for him.”

These words and these words alone floated across towards the dumbfounded standard bearer, his hands clutched around the wooden shaft reflexively, wide eyes fixed on the Guardians back as he ran for the safety of the swamp, black vest lifting up abit to flare out behind him. This left only Krrl on the barrens, left to his own decision. Go back to lord Baal and be killed for cowardice? Or quite both lands and head for the warmer southlands, where a man could find his fortune. It seemed a very clear decision.

The standard could be seen for many years to come, propped up against the kneeling corpse of a man gutted on his own sword.

24Eternal Dirge

The stench of blood was overpowering in the open space, the trees incapable of masking that so pungent of scents, the rotting vegetation unable to override the scent of the sticky red liquid quickly congealing around the murderers feet. His muscles quivered and shook, his back a veritable ocean of testosterone, the glaring eye at the small of his back a silent witness to the bloodshed around him. His biceps flexed intermittently, relaxing with each harsh exhale and tightening with the equally sharp inhales of the mans lungs. Knuckles stood out white on fists clenched tight, stringy red flesh dangling from within those hands so delicately stained red.

Blood dried, splattered across bare form and ran down slick clothing, boots and pants and skirt repelling that vital life force in a plagued river. Each breath changed the shine of light on his form, one minute bright red on dark skin, the next the hues became indistinguishable from one another. A Crimson man for a crimson land. Bodies lay strewn around the small glade, men wearing steel armor over bronzed flesh, mean wearing tough leathers in place of flowing fabrics. Killers. Slayers. And they had all died here, only this man, this creature, left as their witness.

Blood ran from the corners of his lips, teeth bared and stained with crimson ichor from His bloody repast. Some of the corpses were missing whole sections of flesh from their bodies, ribs layed bare, throats completely removed violently. Tatters of flesh marked where hands and teeth had completely their gristly work, and broken bones showed where they had done more than their share.

Slowly, the panting stopped, becoming a simple slow repetition, a peaceful sleep breath that did not match the figure of the man in his savage pose. Legs were spread, back was bent, he seemed ready still to pounce on his pray next chance he got. No such foe presented itself however, and still he remained, muscles shaking with restrained violence. Minutes passed, then an hour, and finally something more began to happen. His breathing increased, his heartrate spiking as a savage growl tore from his chest.

Bodies began to fly again as hands and teeth tore into flesh again, a savage display from a savage creature. No further harm could come to them, not anything that mattered after all, and they offered no retort as the Guardian releived his roaring anger on those that defiled his swamp. And just as suddenly as it had come....the storm ended. Hands paused in their work, deep in the chest cavity of a man who stared blankly at the sky, mouth agape as if in silent accusal, eyes widened in shock. For one moment, Green eyes met blue in more than hate, more than rage. they met in understanding, an acceptance.

The hands withdrew, fresh blood coating them and making them shine like the birth blood of a child. It seemed appropriate, as the man behind the teeth and clawed fingers was reborn from the fires of his anger, stepping out into an odd scene.

" Oh...."

No real shock, no sorrow or horror. Just a simple statement, a summary of the scene. He felt nothing for these corpses, after all. Why should he be suprised at an act he himself was always prepared for? No, now was not a time for self loathing. There was a canal nearby, bright as the sun in his mind. Now it was time to clean himself off.

With each step the blood soaked ground sucked at his feet, like hands gripping, unwilling to let him leave the scene of bloodshed. Like fans at a concert they wanted to pull him back almost, wanted an encore that the Elemental was unwilling, and quite unable, to give. He had no instruments anymore, and the passion had all but subsided in him, and thus with strong pulls he yanked free of the red stained earth, easing down a gentle slope to the serene water. The blood would eventually leak down in small rivers, staining the water pink at first, but that wouldn't be for some time.

For now, it afforded the almost shell shocked guardian a place to wash, his first step into the murky water sending clouds in either direction, blood blooming like water flowers from each leg. The current was all too willing to pull the evidence from his body the deeper Damion moved, carrying it away to far off reaches until he stopped, waist deep in the warm waters of his home. His hands hovered just over the water, palms down so that his fingertips just grazed, sending small V's in the water as wakes. It was peaceful, here, but he was yet unwilling to give up his prize.

Green gazed down at red, marveling at the drying liquid, already clotted on his skin. Taking a life was not cause for such reflection, but the motions, the act of taking it was. Every scene replayed before his misted eyes, and so it was with some shock that he came back to the feeling of gossamer touches, like tiny hairs on his exposed flesh, crawling over his back. White now marred his red coated flesh, bulbous little bodies moving tentavely across the landscape of Damion's arms. Eight legs propelled these tiny bodies, already stained slightly red.

Spiders, spiders of his home. He would be loathe to remove them, and movement would only scare them off, so the elemental sat quite still, watching the spiders investigate, turning red as their tiny fangs drank up the blood that covered his body, small patches of bare skin revealed where they had been. The Blood Spiders fangs were too small to puncture his flesh, but numerous enough to absorb the vast quantities of blood on his body.

" Hello little brothers..."

He spoke softly, soothingly, as if to beloved relatives or his own flesh and blood children. A slow turn of his palm brought it pointing towards the sky, one late comer settling down gently from above, the thin line of its' silk, almost too thin to see, trailing up into the tree branches above. He felt the tickle of it's legs, the gentle suction of it's fang-ringed mouth, even felt the blood flow up and into the creature, turning it's body a dull red, like brick.

There was much to be learned from spiders, Damion though, marveling at his cleaning crew. Their webs were as strong as steel, he had heard, and sticky enough to hold creatures much larger than they, and yet they themselves could break this line, and walk on it with no issue. They hunted in all manner of ways, from the parasitic Blood Spider, to the patient Trap Door Spider, each one masters in their own right. Mayhap he had something to learn from the tiny creatures, he thought again, watching as they climbed slowly back up their lines, like fishermen reeling in their lures to cast again. Tiny red shapes, like blood drops, dangling in the air, none any bigger than a silver dollar.

He watched until they left his sight, hidden amongst the trees were they would breed and hibernate until they must feed again. Even as he sank into the water, eyes closing, Damion remembered their blood drop shape as they had climbed into the sky, tiny messengers of war.

25Eternal Dirge

200 yards now. The rough man shape of the morning had resolved itself into a rough manshape, the dull glintings of sunlight fixing themselves into the shape of armor, catching the sun as the figure moved steadily down the mountainside. The body was no different from the barbarians sent before, a hulking mass of muscle and fat seemingly slung together in the shape of a man, encased in rough iron armor to maintain the shape with smaller glints apparently trophies of battles yet past. No banner carrier followed this one, just a long fur topped cape, flaring out behind the man dramatically.

His finger tightened on the trigger slowly, a gentle creaking coming from the strained bone like wood as it struggled against the pull of the string. Each breath was slow and controlled, ruffling the dark brown and white banded feathers gently in the forced breeze, only the slightest shift registering in the bolt head. Spiderwebs glistened off the snipers body, long strands of spider silk glistening gently in the dappled sunlight, dew clinging to webs were white spiders rested, content to sit in the warmth of the sun.

100 yards now, he could see features, make out the pits of eyes, the red curve of a scar looping its way from jaw to eye where some creature had struck a cruel blow. The armor seemed even more roughshod now, peices of metal slapped on and battered into shape around the hulking body, waves of bulk leaking out from the overtight armor. The mans hair receded from his temples, creating a curve that those Antifreeze green eyes could focus on, the bolt head shifting up slowly until it pointed just slightly above the focus.

One breath.

:wait:

Two breathes.

:wait:

No air reentered the lungs of the sniper, locking up tight to keep his aim steady as fingers squeezed on the trigger and stock, a sonorous thump coming from the string as pressure was released and bolt was thrown, whistling through the air. Feet, Yards, both disappeared as the bolt sped through the air before impact, a dull whack like one would expect from a melon breaking. The approaching giant jerked with the impact, lurching backwards with eyes focused at the sky, backpedaling for one, two steps. The shot was perfect, only feathers extending from the side of the mans unarmored head.

Legs collapsed from under the body, the sound of metal clashing on metal rising in a horrible cacaphony. Flesh rotted where the bolt had touched, turning grey with rot, eating away to reveal bone and blood below at a terrifying rate. Within minutes, only a blood drenched skull rested at the end of a flayed neck, the poisons limits not extending into the body core itself. Damion lowered his crossbow slowly, webs coming loose from his body where spiders hurried to cling, covering him in little white bodies.

" Good shot, if I may compliment myself."

A smile pressed its way onto his face, an allowance for a job well done. He wasn't sure why Baal had only sent one down to fight him, and so stupid an enemy, but he was glad for it. There were many things to take care of in the swamp, and taking care of the raiders was becoming abit of a pain in the a**. The elemental sighed, gripping the crossbow in his right while swinging down from his branch with the left. Practiced feet found footholds and sturdy branches as he made his way out of the tree, pausing only once.

Something new was in the air, some alien scent. He stood frozen on the lowest branch, every muscle tensed and ready to spring out. Damion was the coiled snake, scenting prey before striking. But even with his level of preperation, he was taken by suprise, knocked from the tree in a blur of motion. His breath was knocked out, black stars erupting infront of him as he bounced and rolled, the weight of the assailant gone almost as soon as he had hit the ground. No sign but the rustling of plants, no sound but his own hacking, labored breathing. He hadn't even seen the tail of whatever had hit him.

The crossbow had flown free, falling somewhere he couldn't see as Damion frantically tried to regain control, eyes darting as he gained a crouching position. His mind was awhirl, confusion clouding his ability to reason as he tried to figure out where his assailant had gone. He didn't have long to wait, bowled over with an impact from behind, burning lines of pain erupting along his chest where clawed hands grasped and tugged, the two bodies rolling over and over until they seperated in a rush, both dropped into crouches away from one another.

Dark brown hair crowned the creatures humanoid head, flaring out in all directions like a lions mane to frame tawny skin, a face sculpted much like Damion's own, both high boned and elven in shape, though the eyes were of an entirely different nature, shining gold to counter Damion's green. Dressed in a tight leather jerkin and loose brown pants, he regarded his prey with a smirk, white fangs just barely poking against his lower lip.

They circled one another slowly, each trying to read the other one, trying to guage their strenths. The air fairly crackled with animosity, aided by the sudden hissing of the outsider. When it seemed like they would circle once again, the dark hair outsider pounced, springing low with arms outstretched, catching Damion by his shoulders and digging clawed fingers into the flesh there before he was thrown free, Damion's foot colliding with the creatures stomach and sending it up and over.

Fresh blood ran down Damion's chest from long cuts across his chest. He had no time to worry about the damage though, spinning around to lash out hard, hammering a foot out towards his attacking foe, the outsider ducking under the attack to tackle the Hydra back to the ground, stradling his waist in a rush. Their hands strove for purchase, Damion trying to throw the creature off him while the other tried clawing him with the thin, curved claws that sprouted from his fingers.

Damions head jerked hard, snapping forward once to spit a bit of saliva into his attackers eyes, the creature fleeing backwards in a rush, hissing and scooping at its eyes. He only needed the moment, before leaving the creature in the same position he had been in, looking around in sudden angry confusion.

" Show yourself you scum sucking Swamp lover!"

The voice was high, almost whiney in its tonal quality, but Damion didn't allow for it to last much longer, diving down from above like an avenging bird of prey, slamming his shoulder into the creatures back and rolling away to a yowl of pain from behind, the elemental taking flight. Despite the sudden impact, his assailant seemed to recover fast, the two soon playing a cat and mouse game. They darted across root systems, narrowly avoiding falling into the water.

Tree branches shattered where they kicked off, launching themselves through the air to fight in their passing. The air was alive with the sounds of combat, the two unconventional fighters trying to find the hole in their opponents armor, kicks and punches flying from extreme angles. Their breakneck speed didn't deter either of them from trying the most extreme stunts, cutting through tangled webs of swamp vines or tree branches, darting through them with a skill Free Runners would have envied. An island began to take shape ahead of them, the tree line thinning to nothingness infront of it, leaving only a long jump between the trees and the spot of land. Neither creature stopped or slowed, meerely moving away from one another until they hit that last step and jumped, twin blurs in the air.

They would close and clash like that, sudden flurries of violence from the sky like two warring birds of prey. Damions skin became covered in thin red lines, small droplets of blood coating his skin where they beaded up. The clawed humanoid jerked at sudden impacts where Damion's fingertips struck hard, brief yowls of pain providing a kind of music for their fight. As one they collided onto a small island, water rushing around either side of them as they grappled in the center. They rolled, crushing underbrush beneath them, wet muck clinging to their skin until they seperated and rushed back at one another, finding purchase and surging to their feet in the middle.

They locked, stuck in the classic 'strength test' pose, faces meare inches from one anothers, their teeth bared and the hard impact sound of flesh on flesh rising into the air. Just as swiftly as they had clashed, they seperated, weapons springing to hands in mellow white rushes before they clashed again. Savagery was the name of the game, the mountain dweller striking again and again to cause the most harm, as Damion strove to hit important spots and failing. Attacks seemed to come from everywhere to Damion, where he blocked one another seemed to spring up, slicing across his skin and leaving shallow cuts.

He pedaled backwards, trying to create abit range from his foe, searching for breathing room, while his foe followed after him, slender blade seeking holes in the Hydras' guard. Bleeding wounds opened up on his arms where the blade struck. A cuel smile spread on the attackers face, infuriating in its smugness. He wanted to wipe that smile from the creatures face, wanted to make it bleed. He lunged, stricking down with both knives as the serpents bite, feeling the deep impact of a while placed strike, a smirk of his own beginning to spread as a look of shock and pain overtook the Maned humanoid, atleast before he felt the burning impact of a strike, spreading wide along his ribs.

A warmth began to flow down his stomach, the source a place Damion couldn't spare a glance to. Keeping a straight face was next to impossible, a wince forming on his face, turning into a grimace of pain as they backed away from one another, the twin fangs of Damions knives coming free from the either side of the offending creatures collarbone, blood spurting free suddenly as the two began to circle again, cautious of the blood that poured from their bodies. Neither was willing to attack again, their limbs wavering even as they fought to stay steady.

A snarl from the other creature snapped Damion back, his vision swimming already from the blood loss. He jerked, knives shooting up to intercept an attack that wasn't coming, the humanoids back to him now as it turned to run, disappearing into the swamp itself, back the way they had come, leaving a blood patch on the ground where they had stood. The hydra stood still for long seconds, unsure if the fight was infact over, but unwilling to drop his guard just yet.

" What was that?"

His voice was breathy, the voice of a man much fatigued, and Damion stumbled hard, dropping to a knee. His strength was fading, the edges of his vision a fuzzy black as he crumpled slowly, unmindful of the gentle white spiders that began to cautiously crawl out of their hiding places, hundreds of them creating a carpet as they flooded onto the island. Their small, scooping mandibles fed the pools of blood into their mouths in sudden rushes, their chitinous bodies making a gentle rustling noise as they rubbed against each other.

Damion found the sound rather soothing, his head pressed against the ground as the spiders washed over him, feeding from the bloody cuts that covered his body, hordes of them covering the long gash that revealed his ribs to the world. He couldn't feel the flow of blood stopping, the tiny spiders crossing and recrossing across the wound, thin grey webbing coating the wound, covering it like a bandage. Red spiders covered the man, making it look as if some freakish blood golem had come to life, rising up on wobbly legs, floods of spiders pouring off him like blood.

The rustling was cacaphonous, filling the small clearing with the sounds of thousands of spiders moving as one, spreading wide around where Damion stepped, leading him towards the water. They acted as blood to the heart, flowing over and over to force the Hydra along until at long last he slipped into the water, leaving them like a pool of blood on the shore, watching as he floated out of sight, a small nest of the Blood Spiders resting on the elementals back like a new wound gouged into his flesh.

26Eternal Dirge

This place was so quite, so different from the rest of the swamp. Nestled up against the eastern fringe of the mountains, the Mushroom grove was a dank, alien part of the swamp, connected only through the small streams that threaded their way through like branches of a tree. Few creatures actually called this place home, relegated mostly to refuse eating beatles the size of small dogs, trundling along the rotten ground industriously.

But it was a quiet place, which was why Damion was here.

It had been a week since his fight with the stranger from the mountains, leaving him wounded and weak, his body struggling to help fix the damage done with the aid of the Blood Spiders. Even now, they crawled over his bare torso, pinpoints of faint pink over an expanse of dark skin, the white mushroom cap he lay on picking him out even more. He didn't want to admit it, but Damion had come here to hide. He had never before met his match in the same way that the creature had been.

Even during the week he'd been resting, the creature had returned, seemingly unhurt, reeking havoc across the swamp. Entire villages were burned to the ground, tribes lost to the claws of that monster, and He had been unable to do anything about it. It ate at him, and drove him to seek solitude deep in the hidden parts of the swamp, hiding in the dark warmth of the bioluminescent mushrooms. Damion rolled, turning on his side and curling an arm under his head, watching the beetles go about their lives, content to be part of the bigger machine of the swamp.

He envied them in their simplicity, no predators big enough to eat them after all. A sigh forced itself from his lips, one of disgust and fatigue. Oh he knew why he was out here, he just hated admitting it. He felt weak. It had been long and against since he'd been beaten like that and it didn't sit right with the elemental. He sat up slowly, the pinkish spiders scurring to higher ground around his shoulders and hanging from his chest, huddle there like scared children.

" S'alright, s'alright little ones."

He felt the need to comfort his new charges, their anxiety like tiny claws in his brain, scratching gently but insistantly. Better to calm them now, although the source of the their anxiety was alien.

" What's wrong Necrontyr?"

He smiled, holding the largest in the center of his palm, stroking its' pink back with the forefinger. It troubled him that their anxiety was rising, until at long last it seemed to reach a breaking point, a focus. An image flashed in his head, of a foe crouched, ready to pounce. A foe whose face he remembered well. His eyes widened, suddenly and without warning he felt it, the eyes on his back. Bother bodies moved as one, Damion diving forward while the body of the mountain creature dove behind, hitting the ground where Damion had been.

White bodies fleed from Damion as he rolled, hiding amongst the mushrooms with startling speed. He spun, catching the leaping humanoid by the wrists as he did so before slamming backwards hard.

Both combatants grunted hard as they scrambled, Damion's clenched fists flashing out, cracking once, then twice against the feline face of his foe, bone cracking loudly, cartilage collapsing as his rock-like fist crashed into the things nose. It scrambled away fast, hissing and snarling as it moved on all fours. The Hydra would not let it get far however, lunging in and tackling the creature back to the ground, only to have it sink claws into his face, pulling down hard and ripping long cuts into his right cheek, blood gushing hard.

" GRAH!"

They broke again, moving away as fast as they could, trying to recoup. Blood flowed freely from Damion's cheek, matching the runnels of blood that ran from the things nose. They circled, passing in and out of vision as they crossed behind mushrooms. Finally they leaped again, Damion coming low in an uppercut between the creatures outstretched arms, catching it hard in the chest and throwing it back, the air all but blasted from its lungs.

He pressed the attack, their feet sliding easily through the muddy ground, neither losing their footing as they fought across the mushroom groves. Damion boxed, throwing feints and sharp direct punches at his opponent, trying to catch him in place where he could focus on single punches. The creature bobbed and weaved, claws lashing out again and again to take back to ground it had lost, both fighters moving back and fourth across the battlefield.

" Why won't you die?!" Damion's voice came wet and muddle, the holes ripped into his cheek making it difficult for him to speak effectively. His teeth were bared in a gritted smile, canines somewhat extended to needle sharp points. He wanted to much to tear this creatures throat out, wanted to savage it's body and leave it out for all others to see.

" Why won't you?!" It called back to him, snarling in anger as it fought to gain some form of upperhand. Claws flashed down, locking onto the Hydras arm. They dug in, tearing skin and muscle and causing Damion to cry out, his arms held immobile in the painful grip of his foe. He thrashed, falling to his knees as the pain drove him down, the creatures claws digging deeper, opening up more flesh.

" Suffer fool. C'tan will end you...." The creature hissed down at him, snarling and smirking, enjoying Damion's pain, drinking it in. C'tan, for that could only be the creatures name, lifted a foot, planting the claws of its toes on the Hydra's chest, pulling down, opening 5 rents across his chest. Blood began to flow, slowly at first but with more speed as the cuts grew longer, until at long last the claws came free, the new cuts connecting to the original wound, making it into some strange eldritch symbol.

Damion panted, struggling to catch his breath as the pain threatened to overwelm him. He could only glare up at his tormentor, upper lip twitching into a savage snarl before he surged, arms shooting forward, forcing the claws out but trapping C'tans arms between Damion's chest and the catlike creature. He squeezed, his face meere inches from the cat creatures, teeth still bared as he began to squeeze, muscles straining and stressing to immitate the constrictor.

C'tan squirmed in his grip, but could not break the hold, his muscles straining, groaning in his body before they began to break, upper arms shattering in the tight grip bringing with them a scream of pain from the feline humanoid.

" Just....die!" Damion could feel C'tan's ribs begin to go, first one, then another, popping like acorns in his body. The creature mewled weakly, beginning to go limp before surging, thrashing hard again, claws scratching painfully across the elemental, His arms releasing the creature in a rush.

" GRAH!"

The two predators moved away from one another again, Damion fighting to hold his chest together. Long moments passed as he hid behind a tall mushroom, breathing returning slowly to normal as he waited for the next attack. He let another long minute pass before peaking out, searching for his foe. The only moving creatures were the beetles, undisturbed by the two combatants, once again moving along to eat the refuse of the swamp.

A slight tickling on his skin told him his spiders were back, crawling along his skin slowly, their thin, stinging webs crisscrossing over his wounds, stemming the bleeding slowly until at long last they could feed without Damion bleeding out. He read their concern as featherstrokes in his head, brief sensations that read of empathy.

" s'alright little sisters...s'alright..."

He cooed down to them, eyes still searching for C'tan, that cursed creature. He couldn't have gotten far at all, not with arms broken, but he was nowhere in sight atleast. Finally he sighed and sat back hard, reaching up to touch his cheek, wincing at the flare of pain. It hurt, but already the pain was passing, the spiderwebs that enclosed them providing a kind of fake skin. It would be some time before it healed.

But despite the pain, he felt a swelling pride, a sense of accomplishment. He had done better this time, though he'd need to do more next time. He wasn't getting a challenge in the swamp though, there wasn't anything to fight here. Damion knew he was becoming too predictable now, and that gave his foe an edge. He frowned at that, sighing and looking down at the spiders that crawled over his pants, tiny eyes taking everything in as they fed and scrambled about.

A sudden notion occured to the elemental, the faint feeling that something was off, something was wrong. He began to count the spiders, the tiny creatures obeying some silent command and sat still, turning to him as one mass. Had he been aware, or even slightly put off by such things, he would have shuddered. By the last of his count, it was a sure thing.

One of his spiders was missing.

" s**t...did we kill it?"

He focused for aminute, forcing his mind into the odd state it needed to be. His senses fragmented, scattered over the minds of 56 spiders, all looking at different things at once. It took him amoment to focus on a spider at a time, taking the lengthy process of jumping from spider to spider in the same way a man changed channels while unsure of the station he needed. Finally, or atleast finally to him, he found the odd one out, it's vision a blur of trees and water ways. Definately not where Damion sat and definately moving faster than the spiders could naturally.

A flush filled him and the connection was lost, his skin going cold. One of them had latched on to the C'tan creature.

27Eternal Dirge

What did an armored lizard eat? Big bugs, maybe frogs or something? Damion wasn't sure to be honest, he'd never hunted for the things before now and he was quite sure they didn't eat spiders since all of his were fine. He also didn't know where the hell they roosted either, though he suspected a sunny place would be a good place to start, though the swamp wasn't possessing a large amount of such things. The constant overcast nature kept the sun from making an appearance most days. But there were places where the trees thinned out and the sunlight was unfiltered through their branches.

In these small clearings, the ground rose above water level to form small islands where animals could, perhaps, sunbathe. It was here Damion waited, nestled comfortably into the root system of a cyprus tree with his knees pulled up. The sun had set upon him once already, and with the rising of this sun told him he'd been there for....far too long. Sunlight filtered down onto the clear ground ahead of him, warming it slowly.

must have had a break in the cloud cover, Damion thought, or that wouldn't be happening.

His crossbow rested across his knees a bolt set into place but the string lax, left unlocked to preserve it. His hands rested gently on the stock as the elemental fought to stay awake, a slight tremor rattling the bolt in its' notch. He wasn't so good at remaining awake for long periods of time without some kind of stimulant, and gods be damned if this wasn't the most boring thing he'd ever done. He hadn't even seen any of the reptiles to prove that they'd be here!

Despite his grumblings though, Damion had already gotten half his work done, a full complement of gator teeth safely nestled away inside a hip pouch to be delivered onced he'd shot afew of these stupid lizards. His luck seemed to be holding though, the water was stirring in several places, black, longsnouted heads poking out of the water, scales glistening as they dragged their bulk out onto the shoreline. Each reptile was about the size of a golden retreiver, although the tail made them longer and their bulks were not nearly so large. Thick plates ran the length of their bodies as scales, each easily an inch or so thick at the largest sections and getting thinner the further along one went.

That still didn't answer what the hell they ate, but he could worry about that later. Their beady black eyes were unblinking in the sunlight, and the creatures themselves unmoving now that they had achieved nirvana in the form of sunspots. There were, now that they had stopped, 6 of them grand total, all in various states of repose now. Damion gently pulled back on the string, letting it click softly into place as he held his eyes on the armored reptilians. He had to put the shot carefully, otherwise he might ******** it up and have to chase the damn things down.

And he didn't want that.

Up came the crossbow, butt set against his shoulder as the guardian sighted down the fletching. One eye closed to allow for easier sighting, and his breathing began to slow, each pull coming in smooth and easy. Finally, they stopped all together before the bolt leapt from the crossbow, hissing through the air to stick from one eye socket, the shaft quivering for amoment before the creature slumped, its' fellows not realizing the hunter amongst them. Atleast, not in the time it took Damion to shift targets and reload, another bolt jumping free and out, snapping the creatures head sideways and breaking it's neck with a loud snap.

" Oh yeah...."

They ran then, 4 of them turning with great shuffling speed and diving back into the water, their long tails slapping the water top as they fled. It was odd to think of such creatures as fast, but there you had it. Damion uncurled himself from his hiding place, groaning in pain as his knees and back popped loudly and painfully.

" Frag..."

He hopped his way across jutting roots until he stood beside his kills, still stretching out the kinks and knots in his muscles as he stepped next to the creatures. They were huge, but it should be easy enough to skin them down with his knives. They were sharp enough after all. He knelt down to begin his work as the clouds passed over the sun again, casting his work into haze. Out sprang a fang, the crossbow set onto the ground beside Damion as he knelt and rolled the reptile over to reveal it's soft underbelly. The scales here were paler and squishy, but still stronger than skin would be.

The knife tip poked down against the underscales by the throat, pushing down slowly and gently but only managing to dimple the flesh there. The elemental was forced to put more of his weight into the pushing, the blade sliding in inch by inch until he guess it was deep enough.

" This s**t is tougher than it looks..."

Damion was sure by now that the creature was tougher than natural, that maybe his Gods reach was more pervasive than originally suspected. Each inch his knife slid was a fight all its' own, but soon stinking entrails were spilled over the edge, cast out into the water for animals to feed upon. It would take him awhile, but getting the skin away from the muscle was an easy process atleast. They parted with a ripping sound, the horrible stink of the creatures carcass blocked out by Damion's filter nose. More incisions were made, but soon he had a large expanse of reptile skin layed out along the ground. Unrolled like that, they were bigger than he thought.

" ******** hell..."

He whiped sweat from his forhead, flicking it off to the side as he moved over to the next carcass, performing a similar surgery to it until atlast he had two skins layed out next to each other, a full hour having passed since their deaths. The elemental reached back behind him and took a pinch of some dark powder from one of the pouches in his kit, sprinkling it like pepper across the blood sticky skins, watching as it began to speed up the drying process, the blood lumping together like drying putty, drawing together in clumps that he flicked off with his knives, scuttling around the skins like some odd, no claw having crab.

29Eternal Dirge

Cut. two blades slicing through the air, scissoring the space between in a flash of halflight to be followed by the hiss of something sharp moving at high speeds. Around they pulled, one to either side, one stabbing out while the other spun in tanned fingers like a baton before they switched roles. No tip sought flesh, no blood sprayed the crisp air or splattered out across the moist ground.

Spin. The dancer spun, blades spinning in unison while feet danced across packed earth like a tribesman. Down both swords went, cutting straight down like an executioners axe as the melded into one long blade to be clutched double handed. Dirt burst upwards in a spray before flying out again as the dancer spun again, twisting his hips and feet to go back the way it had come and pull the blade free of the constricting earth.

Solemn tip whistled through the air, cutting nothing but the wind as both fighter and blade danced. It had been a long hibernation, that dark time when the world was cold and sleep stole the hours away. He had slept through it in the darkness of his temple and found peace in the dreams he had been gifted with, dreams were the sun shined eternally and warmed his scales, where happiness was as simple as snatching prey from the ground or finding just the right sunning space. All dreamers wake eventually, and the reality of Damions life was much harder to fathom from the opiate of his mind.

His muscles ached and burned with the strain of activity, the morning not even half gone. Damion felt as weak as a newly hatched egg but refused to give up just yet. The sword danced on still nimble fingers, the memory of his trade not yet forgotten as the sword stretched and bent, a spear now twirling through fingers the color of dry dirt. Around it came, tip stabbing out to break the bark of a cypress tree, splinters of wood spraying out from the contact point before they were joined by others. Like a murderer, the blade end sought contact again and again with the wood like a body. Holes stood out vividly against the dark skin, whitish inner 'flesh' stark in the half-twilight of the swamp.

His hands ached now, the strain of holding the spear up almost too much. One step, pivot into a spin and then jump, the spear cutting in a rising arc starting from behind and ending far from infront of him. The blade end slapped the ground, bouncing as Damion himself crouched and stepped in, hands sliding to releave the strain on his muscles, catching along the shaft halfway with one hand remaining low, pushing up on the lower end.

His back arched like a fish leaping from the water, feet gliding along the ground as the spear stabbed out. The lower arm pushed forward hard, stone sliding through the circle of his higher grip fingers. Bare feet caught the ground, then slipped, toes struggling to grip at the ground before failing again, the slip turning into a hard fall. The hydra rolled over along his back, dropping spear and dignity in his attempt to rise again. Stopping in an very ungraceful flop, he lay still for amoment, a puppet with its strings cut.

Slowly, mechanically, he rose again, hands pounding into the ground with enough force to leave handprints. His body quivered, muscles straining in the effort it took to even lift himself from the ground, breath straining to draw the air in, sweat pouring down his face and dripping from his long hair to the ground below. His chest was covered in dirt and sand, the legs of his black pants dusted white with clinging particles and green where seeds had settled.

No longer in motion, the Hydras condition was evident, skin stretched over a thin frame. Muscle had receded with fat, the first winter always the test of food storage, when fat was most necessary and then gone the body began to eat itself. Already the gnawing pain of hunger clawed its way back into his brain, no longer forced out by the simple function of Kata's and practice. Thin lips pulled back over white teeth, the pointed canines bared in a snarl.

" ******** hell..."

His voice had grown hoarse in disuse, no more than the gravely whisper of a long time smoker. Damion's breathing struggled to return to normal, thin chest rising and falling rapidly while his heart attempted the same. Even this small activity wore him down, it would be some time before he could do much of anything. He turned his head towards home, feet ploddingly leading him in that direction aswell, the slow tread of the truly exhausted.

The idea of sleep was terrifying now, the idea of never awakening beginning to seed in his mind despite his physical exhaustion. Soon, his steps began to falter, to turn towards the south, to turn away from the darkness of the temple and towards the center of life he expected. Islands opened up infront of him, rising from the muck and providing Damion with a path. Even with the pain in his feet and legs he marched on through hanging canopies of moss and decaying vegetation, brushing them aside when he could and ignoring them when they swung back.

The tread of tiny limbs across his body told Damion of the return of his friends, tiny white bodies scrambling along his chest and back. They crooned in his head like dear friends, the collective psyches of the spiders a warm ball in the still sleep cold center of his mind, warming him slowly. It was good to not feel so alone, a feeling he hadn't even been aware of. He took that comfort with him through the swamp, the long hours slipping by unnoticed as his mind was carried to his friends, to Stephen and Raven and Ryugi and Maximos. Damion had not even been aware he missed them so deeply until that point, and what had been a desire burst into a desperate need. He HAD to see his friends.

30Eternal Dirge

Long and ago the swamp had been a city, a city of sprawling proportions with a civilization all its' own. Traders came from all across the surface of Gaia to pedal their wares in its vast Bazaar, and homes were built on homes in the residential sections. Thousands of languages filled the air and residents walked the streets with creatures of myth and legend brought forth from the Cathedral of Dagon that dominated the landscape, erupting into the sky with its organic looking walls and opaque glass windows. They lived in relative decadence until the blessing of Dagon was pulled from the land and the waters of the sea rushed in.

The earth shook and thundered with titanic force, splitting and cracking as the city began to disappear beneath the waves and erupting earth. Screams filled the air and were cut off just as soon as they began, survivors fleeing from the outer edges or running to the shuttered temple. Not all made it and many lives were snuffed out. The priests of the temple and their guardians hid from the turmoil and catastrophy outside, praying to a god who could no longer hear them. Their world became darkness as the temple itself began to sink, their prayers falling silent with time.

Damion knew the story, he himself had dreamed it many a night past. He was the inheritor of all that had been before him and was now, this wasteland of muck and filth that threatened to drag the unwary under with the slightest provocation. He knew too that this land was slipping through his fingers with each passing day and falling into the hands of a creature who had no love for this place and its varied inhabitants.

The Hydra wasted nights and days searching for an answer to his problem in the vast moldy library of the temple, old scrolls long gone to rot giving up their secrets before he cast them aside without a second glance. Thousands of years of lore were lost in his search for an answer, until at long last the answer came to him. Today, Tonight, he would at long last take the first step on the road that would save his beloved adopted home. The scroll he had found stood pinned to a tree, open for his eyes to see as he moved around the opening to the temple.

The vast hole glowed with a deep blue light that washed up like waves on the beach, each break punctuated with a flash of white that bled away slowly. Complex runes pushed down into the ground as if pressed there with a stamp, each symbol flowing into the next. Damion skittered around each of these, his long hair hanging lank around his head as he carved with the air of a madman. Each movement was frantic and hurried with little pause to consider if he was making the proper lines. He worked by moonlight and the pulsing glow of the Great Hole as he awaited the guest of honor, praying ferverently that his message had reached his dear friend Raven.

As the moon climbed higher into the sky the Hydra took longer pauses between work to examine what he had done. The symbols pushed out past the black hole of the temple entrance 5 feet, layers of symbols winding out like a spiral with no break. He stood at the end of the line of runes with a bone knife in hand, the blade dark brown from the rich earth. Damion muttered to himself in the tongue of the Deep Ones, a hissing, gurgling noise like a drowning man trying to speak. Although his voice remained low the pulsing light began to speed up and the white light began to bleed out slowly into the words. It slid through the crevaces like water and illuminated the words clearly.

Tonight Damion would make up for his failures by creating the proper number of guardians through himself. No more would any creature suffer the depredations of the outside world.

31HonoRaven

Raven made her way through the swap with a determined pace, managing to weave her way through the natural obstacles.

She was worried, and that worry in turn made her forget that she was supposed to be a silly brainless fashion slave smilies/icon_xp.gif .. Moving with silence and grace. This place was old... the land had mostly managed to swallow all the signs that civilization had once been here. it was older than her, that was for darn sure.

Part of her wanted to stop and rummage through the molding debris for clues to what had really happened here, but the rest of her was being pulled by an unseen cord, and urgency that was not really her own but instead was her friend's.

What in the world had that dunder-headed hydra meant by 'dying and coming back again'... Rae knew from first hand experience that death was not some parlor trick that could easily be conjured and then tucked away once more in favor of life.

There was light ahead, and the pull of urgency was there as well, so unless Damion had managed to clone himself.. and the clone was broadcasting his emotions all over the darn place Rave had to assume that her goal was not far now.

32Eternal Dirge

He could feel time slipping away like sand in an hourglass, each grain of sand filled with import as he struggled the words out. They pulled from his mouth now as if controlled by some unseen force that wanted this more than he did. Damions hands raised up into the sky, fingers clawed and curved as if to grasp the stars and the moon and pull them down to the earth.

"Ssssra'vasna'kotasssvrrranatarassss"

His tongue hissed out words that held little meaning even to him, throat producing noises no human voice should ever make. Blood slowly trickled down from the corners of his eyes like tears and geometric lines glowed a bright acid green across his body that trickled from his elbows, his fingers, ran down his legs into the earth to mingle with the glowing lines. He didn't feel his body growing weaker, too far gone in the magic to care. He didn't even feel Raven's approach, a fact he would have been aware of even a day ago.

The swamp seemed to open up before the fashionista, an all too convienient path rising from the muck and still water to direct her. No animals barred her path, and although they were only recognizable as dark shadows in the underbrush it seemed even the Swamp Elves wished Raven all speed in her arrival. The air was charged and electric, racing towards a breaking point like an out of control bull. Damion's voice was audible, rising higher and higher in volume the longer he went on.

33HonoRaven

"I'm surprised you managed to say that without dislocating your tongue... or at least biting it!" It was easy, far too easy...but she was tampering with the elements that she controlled as well, so she expected it to be easier than a trip through a virgin swamp.

There were glowing lines all over the place, runes she didn't know and that actually made her head ache slightly as if to discourage looking too closely. Learning shadow runes was hard enough, raven didn't need to try and add these to her list. "Now what the heck did you need from me? Your note wasn't really very detailed!"

34Eternal Dirge

" It's easy if you know what you're doing...."

He let the words drift away into the air, the last note floating in the air long after the breath that it had taken was replaced, filling the swamp with a sillibant hissing.

" But I hardly know what I'm doing anymore."

And in his words and the sudden downcast set of his shoulders Damion expressed his sadness. Sadness at the way things were, at what he had to do, or even at the steps it had taken to get here.

" But what I need, dear heart, is very simple. This place, my Home,"

and oh how much import that word held for the islander, his voice ringing with a pride stronger than any patriot could muster.

" Is slipping away as easily as sand shifts from the hand of a child. I no longer recognize it some days, the once familiar paths labyrinths to me now. Once this place was strong, strong enough to take one guardian where it had nine. Now it needs more than any one can provide."

As he spoke he turned to face her and Raven could see the terrible toll his duties had taken upon him. Vivid scars stood out across his bare torso, long healed but twisted and gnarled white in the light of his spell. Dark bags hung under his eyes and it looked as if the weight of the world had settled on his shoulders.

" I need you to do something simple Raven. I need you to be my reaper, my killer, so that I may barter and beg and come back with the means to save my home."

Desperation leaked from his voice and Damion stepped forward, his hands and arms moving in towards the center of his body. With hands clasped before him the once proud Hydra fell to his knees.

" Please do this for me. It was you who helped me become what I was, helped me find the magic and grip it tight. Help me in this."

35HonoRaven

Guilt...an unbelievable amount of guilt almost managed to overwhelm her for a moment, she had chosen to change him, despite knowing that he would come to regret what she had done. Rave had to shrug it off to deal with along with her other mental problems.. later...

"Death is not usually my deal dear, I've killed before...but never a friend." She moved to look down at him, the frown visible on her face even with the uncertain light.

Orange eyes seemed to almost glow rather than reflect the light as she reached out to rest her hands on his shoulders. "Are you sure there is no better way?"

36Eternal Dirge

" Not for this to work. There are no others left who can join me, it HAS to be me."

He spoke with the vehemence of a zealot, his mind blinkered to the rest of the world. Damion truly beleived in his cause and the fact that it was the only one. His dark skinned hands reached up to grip her wrists in a grip that was perhaps abit too tight.

" And it has to be you. Do this for me, I will be back."

At this he smiled lopsidedly, one half of his mouth open in a quasi-smirk that revealed teeth in a non-predatory way. It did not diminish the hungry look any smile gave the guardian, but it did make him look abit more confident, abit more able to stand on his own two feet. For amoment, his green eyes flickered skyward and the smile faltered before returning to full potential. Time was running short, he could feel energy and life returning to him as they spoke.

" And even if you don't Raven....I will."

His hands dropped from her wrists and as if by magic they were full again, the white of his knives brighter than ever in the light of the moon and the runes. Their tips glinted darkly with untapped potential and to those that could see it a dark violet energy dripped from its tip like water. They wanted this as much as their owner did, begged to bite into flesh and rip, tear, to kill again. One could almost beleive that they would do the job on their own.

Rae sighed again, not fighting his grip as she looked into his eyes. "You may be back... but you won't be the same, death changes people."

He let go, but she kept her hands on his shoulders even as he pulled his knives. "But I owe you, and so I will do this... you just better come back as you said, or I will find a way to resurrect you so I can yell at you!" She was quite serious about that last bit, even though she smiled softly as her hands slowly slipped off his shoulders, moving towards the fangs and waiting for any final instructions.

38Eternal Dirge

" If this fails Raven I will gladly take the yelling."

Damions relief couldn't begin to be expressed in words so he didn't even bother trying, instead offering those last few words before casting his eyes up at the sky.

" Just drive the fangs forward when I stop talking dear heart, to the hilt if need be."

He knew the fangs were more than sharp enough and Raven more than strong enough to drive them through without needing to get speed on the shove. He moved her hands and the fangs up as his mouth began to produce that slow drowning hiss, until the points rested on either side of his sternum. A gentle twist and the blades turned horizontal, the easier to pass through his ribs.

The green light that had bled from the elemental began to creep along the ground swiftly, racing towards the two of them as it slipped from the symbols along the ground. It cut up his legs in lines like mathematical equations torn from some made scientists brain, racing upwards until they covered his body in a pulsing menagery. Damion let his eyes close slowly, head tilted back as the words were pulled from his throat. The pulsing of the symbols behind them slowly died away, their light dimming until it was nothing more than a gentle glow like a fireflies light.

" Now Raven..."

His words came like a whisper, pushed out on the last of his breath as he sucked in deep, chest expanding and pressing against the tips of his fangs so hard that red lines of blood raced down his ribs and stomach.

39HonoRaven

Tears slowly welled in her eyes, spilling over as she drove the fangs into him, making sure that the blood was quite clearly on her hands.

Whatever kind of magic this was, it had damn well better work... or she was planning on resurrecting more than Just Damion to yell at. His god was also on her list of beings to be ticked off at, and she was secure enough in her devotion to her own god to have no problem picking a fight with another deity.

40Eternal Dirge

There was no flash of light or dramatic death scene, his skin didn't magically toughen to turn aside the blades. They held true to their sharpness, those Fangs, and peirced through his skin like butter to poke out of his back somewhat. The creamy white of the bone became stained with red as Damion's blood poured from the wounds, running out like a river over Raven's hands as she pushed on the blades with only a soft gasp of suprise from the elemental to mark his own feelings. His dark skinned hands reached up to grab her wrists in a weak grip, blood starting to leak from his mouth as he smiled upwards.

" Thank you..."

The light dimmed in his eyes, those antifreeze green eyes growing dull and glassy as his body began to go limp. Head rolling back, Damion's lifeless body began to slump over onto the ground to impact with a thump. The symbols along the ground still pulsed with their own white-ish blue light while the green light fed into the crumpled body. He seemed like a puppet almost, it's strings cut and the body left to rot away or be eaten by termites.

To hasten this appearance, his body even seemed to be melting, the flesh running from his features like putty slowly as a fetid odor lifted from his rotting form. Yellowish bone slowly became visible as hair and flesh rotted away in a sludge pool around the malformed skeleton of the Islander. It bubbled and squelched noisily as it swirled and mixed around itself, a slowly swirling sludge pool. His skeleton lay dormant in the pool itself, a grinning effigy to the man it had once been. Slowly though, the pool seemed to shrink, the unimaginable stink beginning to fade slowly with the liquid until both were gone and only a clothed skeleton remained, the bone knives still protruding from the torso where lungs should have been, propped up by the rib bones.

41HonoRaven

The body fell, and with it went her hope that this was all some silly little imagining that one of the lost voices in her head had managed to cook up.

Although Damion returned to the earth a heck of a lot faster than most mortals... heck even the ravenous sand beetles couldn't reduce a large man to nothing but ivory bones in the time it took for the man she had known to disappear.

The stench was almost unnoticed as she watched in abstract fascination, slowly falling to her knees beside the skeleton.

At last some small bit of her returned and with his blood still wet on her hands she gently reached out and drew a Triquetra on the bone forehead, the three pointed celtic knot dedicated to the Goddess of War, Babd...Mother, Crone, and Maiden the three points each representing one of her faces and one of her roles in that lost religion as protector of mind, body and spirit.

It was a little laugh in the face of the god that Damion had pledged himself to, this bit of a different religion being observed over the body of one of His followers. Raven was always teasing gods, heck she skirted disaster with Nocturne on a regular basis and yet she still loved Him with all her heart and soul... sometimes gods just needed to be reminded that testing their children too hard oft led to the breaking of those children long before the need for them had ended. Rave got a kick out of reminding them, even if it wasn't one of her safer pastimes!

But now she quietly breathed a soft hymn as she stared at the Triquetra and the bones, waiting for Damion to come back as he had said he would.

42Eternal Dirge

For long, quiet moments, nothing happened. Water gently sloshed up onto the islands of the swamp as it made it's way towards the sea with the tide, and little animals made their way along, but nothing of any magical nature made an appearance. Even the glowing sigils died slowly to bleed out into the dark earth that had surrounded them. Damion's bones moved not an inch, that macabre smile still fixed towards the sky, empty eye sockets gazing pointedly at the stars.

There was no water beyond the entrance to the temple, not for a long ways anyway, but there came from that direction a soft smacking noise. It sounded like someone walking through a mudpath without shoes or someone slapping a wet towel against something far more solid. If she went by the moonlight, Raven would be able to make out the outline of a person but no features at all, a drawing on the world. It came closer with halting steps like a child would, arms outspread for balance and each step wide and almost a stumble. It was not moving towards her in any specific fashion, but more towards a point well forward of her, a new obtrusive rock jutting up from the earth just beyond the giant hole in the ground.

The rock was vaguely hand shaped, in the same way that a branch is vaguely like an arm. It had 4 fingerlike protrusions and a thumb all attached at a palm, but with none of the grace flesh would have. All hard angles and sharp corners it still flexed and grasped at the sky like any hand would. Its would be rescuer finally made it however, falling to knees that were not knees.

A body of water, in the most literal fashion possible, knelt infront of that grasping stone hand. Dark water swirled gently in the same shape as that of a human body minus hair and any recognizable features. Moonlight cut through the swirling water like a knife, making the entirety of the body glow from within with a white light. Fluid hands reached down and grasped the stone one in a tight and impossible grip.

Non-existant muscles strained and stretched as the body leaned back, struggling against the strength of the earth to pull free something from beneath. Water swirled tighter were muscles should have been, little whirlpools in a sea of blackness. The body wasn't very large though, and soon enough it gave up its attempt, instead lifting its head to 'look' in Raven's direction, unformed face somehow managing to look plaintive.

"Help me" that face said, even as it went back to pulling, a second earth hand emerging from the ground slowly, clawing frantically at the air like a drowning man.

43HonoRaven

Raven moved to aid this new entity, many parts of her personality were totally fascinated by something so very unique!

"Help me" that face said, even as it went back to pulling, a second earth hand emerging from the ground slowly, clawing frantically at the air like a drowning man.

Rae was small, but inhumanly strong, and she reached for the first free hand even as she bent to try and grasp the second hand. But she had no idea if she would even be able to hold those hands, although the fact that they had managed to get free of the earth was a good sign that they should be tangible enough for her to grasp. If she managed to get a good grip on those hands she would lean back and pull with all her might to help this new elemental emerge.

44Eternal Dirge

The clawing hand latched onto Raven's fleshy one tightly, grit grinding between them as she and the watery creature pulled. Up close, it was clear neither the hands or the creature had anything organic about them. Whatever was hidden below ground however was heavier than it seemed even with her abnormal strength. The watery creature beside her strained and struggled, making soft noises like the lapping of waves on shore as it did so.

A great groaning undertook the earth as their combined strength and the strength of the creature seeking freedom forced it to shift and bulge outwards. A small hill was made then broken as a vaguely humanoid shape burst free in a rush throwing dirt in all directions. A hole was open where a mouth would naturally be, but the face was otherwise featureless like the water creature, the two of them similar in all ways but their composition. They embraced as the earthwork golem pulled itself further free of the ground, kneeling on the ground together before struggling to rise as one, holding hands like children.

As one they took their first wobbling steps away from Raven, their unfeatured faces making it impossible to tell if they were watching her or not as they stumbled away. Each supported the other, their impossible composition solid enough to allow for this task as they skirted the edge of the giant hole in the earth. They were rather clearly making their way to Damions remains, even if it was abit haphazardly done. Neither made a noise to one another, no sign of communication beyond their clasped hands.

The moonlight illuminated them clearly, bringing several features into stark relief on the newly raised earthwork. Both creatures were short, perhaps 5'5" or alittle less, and both were clearly male. The waterwork was slender to the earthworks roughly muscular design, it's body thicker and less curved so as to bring about the image of muscle. The nearer they came to Damion's skeleton, the more their bodies became defined however, water flowing and reforming and earth compacting or falling off entirely with every step.

They were no less than 10 feet away when they looked more like people, their bodies completely formed into the image of man. All they lacked now was the flesh of man, instead of the elements of their birth that they clung too. It was here they paused, turning to look for Raven as one in two different directions, turning slowly until they found her.

They could have been Damions sons with how much they resembled him, each from different mothers but very much the spitting image of the islander. Each had marked differences to set them apart from one another in face and from Damion, thicker bones, a stronger jaw, etc. They gazed at her with dark holes instead of eyes, still as yet unformed but clearly looking at her.

45HonoRaven

Raven's head tilted slowly to the side, her big orange eyes unblinking as she stared back at the two new men. Alike and yet dissimilar from Damion she could see how they bore a resemblance to the man she had known and wondered if this was his dumb idea of 'coming back'... One was not reborn in one's children, as she thought they might be... and the thought of the mothers of these two strange new children sent a twitch of a smile to the corners of her mouth before it disappeared again.

"Well, now that you are here, what do you propose to do with yourselves?" It was a snarky question... but meant to gauge how intelligent the new ones might be, if they could even understand the common tongue of this age or if they had any idea of their purpose here... for all she knew, the deity of the swamp had birthed them to replace Damion, and had neglected to make sure they had the latest 'software' updates to survive in this day and age smilies/icon_xp.gif

46Eternal Dirge

The earthwork continued to watch her as his sibling turned around towards the skeleton, watery hands gliding slowly over the ribs without ever touching. It continued up then back down, trailing down Damion's arm bones to stop at the hands, lifting them gently. With infinite tenderness the creature moved so that it's hands matched Damion's, fingers overlapping for amoment.

And then the bones were sinking into the watery body in a perfect match. A dry snap came as the arm and wrists broke away from one another, until the waterwork could lift it's hands away and marvel at them. From the tips of it's fingers, the water began to change, hardening solidifying until it became pale flesh, rippling down it's body in slow waves. Nails grew, black hair cascaded down a bare back, and pale grey eyes blinked as their first sight of the world was focused down at the skeleton of its maker.

This change was not short, and in the time it took for the creature to reach such a state its brother was already turning, rough hands sliding down Damions leg bones with a dry rasp until it stopped at the feet. By no means gentle it snapped free the bones of the earth elemental and pushed them into its own soil feet, toes wiggling in apparent pleasure at this new sensation. They changed together in slow evolution, reaching out to touch one another occasionally and take comfort in the others presence.

" We will fix what is broken...."

The first to speak was the Waterborn, turning its head to look at her over it's shoulder, a small smile curving the lips.

" Or build anew what cannot be fixed."

This from the Earthborn, turning completely to face her, his own expression serious as it leaned forward to rest on its knees and knuckles. Both were clearly male, and both were very naked, and neither seemed rather to care at all. The waterborn grinded around, smile widening at the pleasant feeling of soft soil beneath its feet, until it rested like its sibling.

" Thank you....Lady Raven."

Now they spoke together, the deep tonal bass of the Earthborn complementing the smoother sound of the waterborn speaking in a way that made it seem as if they spoke to make up one voice. What they were thanking her for was yet to be determined, but regardless, thats what they were doing.

47HonoRaven

Rave had started to reach out towards them as they began to fiddle with Damion's bones, intent on telling them to let the dead rest in peace, but it was a little too late by the time she had even taken a single step towards them for the earth elemental was already dismantling Damion and she didn't really feel like trying to explain how a dead man could possibly mind having his bones taken apart when his blood was still sticky all over her hands.

" We will fix what is broken...."

but some things can never be fixed... Her neutral expression melted away at its words, orange eyes narrowing to glaring slits that now obviously glowed without the whites of her eyes to make one believe it was just a trick of the light.

" Or build anew what cannot be fixed."

And the new does not always outshine the glory of the old... Now her eyes slowly shifted to the earth elemental, even as she crossed her arms over her chest, her thumbs tucking in under the bend of her arms so that her red and black striped nails stood out in sharp relief against the milk white of her skin, her hair was almost bristling like a cat that has puffed itself out to intimidate a potential opponent.

Something had either ticked her off, or scared the crap out of her... likely it was a combination of both and she was reacting with anger in an attempt to keep from running like her tail feathers were on fire.

"Don't thank me.... I have done nothing that I should be thanked for." First she had meddled with Damion, then she had let him down...repeatedly...and now she had killed him. Defiantly not things that she would ever accept thanks for, if anything she was still broken enough to think that just being in her presence for their birth might end with her accidentally 'tainting' these strange new beings. It didn't matter what they were thanking her for, Raven was thoroughly pissed off at herself for even being here.

48Eternal Dirge

The waterborn cocked his head to the side, a troubled expression growing across his face.

" Animosity....do you hate us?"

They looked at her more closely now, each one coming to their own conclusion. The earthborn shifted forward on his hands and knees, shifting into a crouch with his arms out wide. His brother stood behind him on one knee, his hands out wide for stability. Neither one took their eyes off her.

" You have watched as we were born, a midwife. We honor you for that."

The earthborn spoke with as much sincerity as he could, each word slow and picked carefully. Neither of the golems wanted to let this escalate when they were so young to this world. Neither wanted her angry at them either, the memories of her power coming down from their shared genes and filling their heads. Both stood ready to defend themselves however with muscles tensed and trained to fine points. Even from birth they would be warriors. What more they would be was up to them.

" Please Lady Raven, calm."

The waterborns voice struggled to remain calm itself as time dragged on. Small droplets of water, each no bigger than a raindrop, began to rise from the ground and collect along its palms like padding. As new as he was to this power, it was still a struggle, like a newborn learning to speak. He hoped it didn't show.

49HonoRaven

"Oh no, how could I hate you? I don't even know you as much as I knew Damion. " She actually smiled, although it was quite obviously a sad smile now. She actually took a step back, giving them more space and trying to be less threatening. "The only person I hate is myself."

50Eternal Dirge

" Because hate is perhaps the easiest emotion to feel towards another individual, but the hardest to maintain."

They stood slowly, first the waterborn then his brother, neither quite yet willing to move out of their little formation. Though they weren't the same kind of animal Damion had been, they were not stupid. Just because a gun wasn't aimed at you didn't make it any less dangerous.

" But we will take your word for it. I will be called Nathaniel, Lady Raven."

The earthborn gave a slight forward head tilt as a way of bowing, unwilling to take his eyes off of her. His brother was less concerned, moving out of his selected cover and bowing at the waist before giving his name.

" And I will be Marinus."

He offered with a wide smile, long bluish hair hanging down in his face. When the twins had developed hair was a mystery in and of itself, but there they had it. Marinus's hair was long and fine, each strand seeming to stand out by itself, going from a light blue to almost white at the tips. Nathaniels hair was altogether different, short on the sides with a thicker strip running up the center like a short mohawk, the hair honey brown here where it was dirt brown elsewhere.

Each brother seemed to be getting more comfortable in their bodies, moving around alittle more even as they stood in place. Nathaniels hands came together then seperated as they slid up and down smooth and muscular arms, Marinus shifted his weight from foot to foot continuously as they watched Raven.

51HonoRaven

((kick a** avi dear smilies/icon_heart.gif ))

Rave liked their hair, hell she would have been tempted to start hitting on them, if it weren't for the fact that she was in a real bad mood right now...

"So.... when was Damion planning on coming back like he said he would?" They were new, and she still wanted the old, it had a bit to do with the fact that part of her was as old as the crumbling bits of buildings in this swamp. But mostly it was because she couldn't afford to loose the few people she thought of as friends, it was getting way too hard to make new ones as she lost more and more of herself.

52Eternal Dirge

" Come...back?"

Nathaniel glanced at his brother questioningly, his face downcast in a frown. He hadn't known their 'father' intended to return at all. Infact, the only thing he knew was that they were here now but their life purpose was very much a mystery. Marinus on the other hand simply cast a guilty glance down at the ground between them all, twisting a foot in the ground.

" Lady Raven.....He won't be returning. Father did not understand the ritual he was using. In times long past, one Champion would be elevated above all others, and then split as the Hydra is split."

The twins looked down at the remaining bones of their father, the Earthborn taking the time to gently lift the skull from the ground. He held it infront of his chest with both hands and stroked his thumbs back from the eyesockets. Marinus looked back at Raven with a look of infinite sadness, the tears almost visible in his eyes.

" He will not be coming back."

He spoke the words with finality, their meaning echoing over the space between them like a bells toll. Neither twin wanted to look at Raven but both forced themselves to. They had to witness the effect of their words, to learn. How would this effect Raven? Would it be like waving a red flag at a bull?

53HonoRaven

Her mouth opened, but no sound came out... she tried again with the same results before she had to close her eyes, had to look away from the remains of the friend she had effectively murdered as she took a deep shuddering breath.

Her nails dug into her arms, tiny crescent shaped cuts welling with blood as she took her hands away from her arms and slowly rubbed her palms together to brush away the bits of Damion's blood that had dried enough to flake off. She let her breath out in a long slow sigh as orange eyes opened again, empty of feeling, empty of tears, just empty... " Well then, my duty here is at an end. You boys play nice, don't let the mosquitoes eat you alive, and remember that candy really does rot your teeth, although it takes a lot longer than dentists like to let you think."

Ten little lines of blood slowly etched their way down her arms, in place of the tears that she would not shed. She started to turn away, but stopped half way as if she had remembered something of a lot more importance than the danger of cavities. "Oh, and if you plan to live longer than Damion did... you should try to steer clear of people like me, Maxi may be the more dangerous of the two of us, but I manage to destroy almost as many lives as any reaper..." smilies/icon_sweatdrop.gif "The worst part is that I don't mean to do the harm that I do..."

54Maximos

It didnt seem that anyone had done a thing with Damion's skull, and it was there that Nocturne stood. He was crouched, overshadowing the skull like a man might overshadow a child. His long starry skirt pooled around him like a liquid night sky. and his sleaveless cloak drapped over that like a sea of darkest plum hovering over the infinite starlight. He reached small bone pale fingers down and touched the mark Raven had left on Damion's skull, his multitudinous rings and bracelets jingled softly. This mark did not offend the Shadowfather. This mark was a mark of love. This was a mark of care and concern from one individual to another. Raven had chosen this mark particularly likely because nothing of the sort existed in any Lunoc texts. And as Nocturne's fingers traced the outline of the Triquetra, black spilled from its edge like the writhing limbs of an octopus and became to slowly encompass the skull as a whole. Lunoc was not a magic of domination, shadow's do not own their owners they accent them and as such this marking did the same. There was no contest in its placement, the strength of the Dagon versus Nocturne was already shown when the Paladin wielded his magics and bound the beast into a frail mortal. And then he spoke, in a soft albeit mostly neutral tone.

"What a waste." He said and let out a long drawn out sigh. Anyone could see the marking, but no one could hear or see him save for Raven. "He was afraid in the end. He told you he would have done it himself, if you would not. He wanted someone here to remember him. He made you carry his guilt."

The boy stood up, standing behind the skull, arms wide like a priest bestowing a blessing. "I am a god of destruction and darkness and yet still I recognize that something need not end, for something new to begin. This ritual is a rushed and built of the antiquated notions of a newborn divine creature."

Nocturne ran a small hand through his tussled sunset indigo hair and then shook his head as he folded his arms over his chest, just beneath the golden dagger protruding from his heart. "It is also flawed. Creation of new life outside the system of life and death is most certainly a violation of certain codex's that should indeed never be violated. But more so, no mortal spell, no divine ability, nothing save Death has the power to split, or end a soul truly."

"He has broken his word. And yet there is nothing you can do for his honor now." Even amidst the swamp, black poured from his knife wound and dribbled down his chest and then vanished off into the wilderness where new shadows and nightmares were being born. By now, the sound of Nocturne's voice had likely caused the Priestess Raven to turn around as she was walking away...at the moment Raven turned around, Nocturne would be quiet gone, and instead his arms would wrap around her neck from behind like a loving night breeze. His voice a whisper beside her ear. "But yours on the other hand..."

Nocturne extended a hand toward the skull he has painted, behind and between the elemental constructs to which he paid no mind. God's barely had times for mortals, the lives they created, and even less time for whatever things mortals made to walk and dance about as far from life as a toddlers stick drawing is from a photograph. As he did, the Shadowfather placed a soft hand on the back of Raven's head and let her remember.

She would see herself mere minutes ago stand across from Damion as he was in life. Both her and Damion were transparent ghostly images of themselves with voices that echoed hauntingly as all memories seem to. She would enter the conversation just in time to here herself respond in a very particular set of words.

"But I owe you, and so I will do this... you just better come back as you said, or I will find a way to resurrect you so I can yell at you!"

As her sentence faded, the visual replay of her memory faded and Nocturne's loving hand slid around from her head, traced her neckline and paused over her heart. His skin cool against hers. "Your beating heart breaks. But your disdain does you, and him, no good."

His other hand moved in to softly caress her before running a small finger along her bottom lip as he continued. "You gave your word, my priestess, my voice and hands upon this world. You gave my word. Like blood, it may not be returned once it has been spilled."

The shadows surrounded the skull, even in the night the blackness enveloping the space around it was highlighted, and then just as quickly it sunk into the pool as if the shadow's suddenly gained depth. "His soul still exists. All that made the man save flesh. He has done nothing but give his animating energy away. I have given you a tool, to do as you promised. To begin your quest. Even if he does not wish it, even if just to yell. This house of bone and your treasured feelings for its previous owner will guide you. You will have to call upon your knowledge and resources to find a way to cross the death boundary."

Nocturne lift his hands over his head and Raven's shadow dispersed around her then reformed as a pool over her head from which one long jointless arm lowered the skull into her grasp. "Take my gift."

Needless to say the bony head was going to be safe from any attack with the Shadowfather present, until such time as Raven retrieved it. Nocturne's voice took on a harder tone. His hands moved to either side of her forehead so that his violet eyes could stare directly into hers. "Fulfill your word, my Raven. It is in carrying out what we promise to even the most insignificant detail that we show the value of word, of the priceless faith placed in us. Without which we are..."

"...nothing." Nocturne's pulled himself forward, his lips touching her forehead gently as his words played on the night air as the Shadowfather vanished entirely from view.

As is the nature of the link between priestess and child-god, the entire conversation moved at the speed of a dream and took exactly the amount of time necessary for the skull to simply vanish, in a way similar to Raven's ability to 'bounce', and appear in her hands. The twin's had yet to even reply, and she was in the process of taking in the breath which followed the end of her last sentence, only now, a marked skull lie suddenly in her hands.

55HonoRaven

See, it was times like now that made her love her adorable little God with all of her heart and soul! He had arrived just in time to remind her of the promise she had made, although she had a different god in mind when she had threatened Damion with resurrection... The only reason she had abandoned that line of thought was due to the simple fact that Eir needed a body to put a soul back into, and Damion's body was gone, therefore there was no reason to even attempt to find Grace and ask her to put life and soul back into the empty shell.

But as the blood marked skull dropped gently into her hands Raven had a different thought, and it was actually about someone she didn't entirely like most of the time.

Teira was a soul, a soul bound in a body made of shadows alone. A body that Maximos had created for the shattered soul of Sierra!

Now Raven had no fleebing idea how Maxi had managed that amazing feet, but she did know how to bind a person's shadow to her will, and how to weave shadows into solid objects! So the only real difficulty would be in finding Damion's soul, and then binding it to the one part of him that the new born's did not posses. His skull!

If Damion had no intention of coming back, well she would just have to change his mind on that matter!smilies/icon_blaugh.gif

56Eternal Dirge

In the time it took Nocturne to remind Raven of her word, and for her to turn back to her god, the twins had not moved. After all, their interaction had really only lasted less than a second, the skull vanishing and reappearing in her hands. Whatever words they were about to speak died on their lips as new and simple brains tried to remember if the skull had been there before or not. Marinus's mouth opened, then shut, his eyebrows furrowing as he looked up and away from the skull to Raven.

" Lady Raven? You seem...happy?"

Was this the way of women? Damion himself had never been to good with them, and his friendship with Raven had led him to beleive that all women were capable of purely chaotic acts. Nothing he had ever seen had proved him wrong. The twins only grasped a small bit of Damion's memories and indeed it was like flipping through channels on a tv with the sound off.

" When did the skull..."

This time it was Nathaniels turn to speak, looking down at the skeleton intently. He was sure he had been reaching for it or atleast thinking of doing so and then it had just disappeared. A strange gurgling hiss brought both their attention away from her however, heads snapping around with whipcord strength to peer into the black hole of the temple entrance. As one god spoke to his priestess, so now the god of this realm spoke to his guardians.

" Coming Lord Dagon."

Marinus sing songed, heading for the temple with a smile. Nathaniel followed, making sure his brother went in first and made it safely to the bottom before turning to face Raven for the last time,

" Safe Journey's Lady Raven, the swamp will not harm you. Take care of the Fathers skull."

He told her, his face serious and solemn in the way that a devoted mans face would achieve.

57HonoRaven

Raven gently cradled the skull against her bosom, for once managing to look haughty and rather regal as she watched the new ones depart.

She had a smug little smirk on her face at that last comment, having already known that nothing in this place could have done more than throw a bit of dirt at her in the way of harm. Animals weren't stupid, most of them knew her for more than just another silly two legger so they usually avoided her... and when they didn't, it only took a little flair for power to remind them that she was not prey. No, the worst that she had to worry over was mosquitoes and mud, and the former was kept at bay by an obligating little wisp of air that gently redirected the course of any tiny vampire bugs away from Raven smilies/icon_xp.gif.

"Now my dear Damion, it is time for me to fulfill my vow... and for you to have the chance of a new beginning, I only hope that you take it!" She turned the skull to look into the empty eye sockets, as if her friend could hear her.

He should have known better, he should never have called on her if he wished to simply pass away!

The swamp grew darker, the shadows all gaining more wight to them, and then seeming to lean in around the priestess as if listening intently.

"This place is not a seat of power for me, but it is where last your soul was bound tightest to this realm, so it is here that we shall begin." With her left hand she reached out, the violet and black etched eye on the back of her hand glowing, her shadow seeming to rise up from the ground to take her hand... and then it was more than a seeming and Raven smiled at the dark woman who stood at her side.

Black as pitch, Raven's Shadow smiled back her indigo eyes sparkling as her fingers twined with Rave's. The shadow moved to Face Raven, her free hand gently taking the skull out of Raven's.

"Thank you, if you could just hold him for a few moments while I construct a temporary skeleton... Um, you will have to hold him a bit higher though, I wouldn't want him to have to come back as short as we are!" smilies/icon_whee.gif

The shadow grinned, a flash of jagged white teeth in all that darkness as she obediently raised the skull above her head so it would be just over six feet tall once attached to whatever skeleton Raven built for it. Apparently she thought it would be quite amusing to bring Damion back so that he was only 5 feet tall!

"Now..." This was the hard part... with her free right hand she started to pull at the shadows all around her, making them gather just under the skull as nothing more than a slightly lumpy blob of darkness. "Bones, hard as rocks... to go with the rocks in his brains..."

Little bits of light seemed to slice into the mass of shadows, cutting out a human skeleton as Raven stared off into nothing, keeping Damion alone firm in her mind as her will worked to form the magic.

Raven was a medic, and knew enough about human anatomy that she could have drawn a skeleton in her sleep, but making one was another matter entirely! Shadows were meant to be fluid, free moving and usually hazy around the edges, but now she wanted them to be hard and very tangible so she called on the tiny bit of earth magic she still had in her to bind the shadows into solid forms, forms that would be hard as stone, or metal.

The skeleton took shape, the pitch black bones were gently aligned and held ever so slightly apart by bits of air for the moment.

"Good, good... next, lets put a bit of meat on those bones!" The remainder of the blob of shadows seemed to ooze over to the skeleton, slowly crawling up the bone frame until Raven's shadow could take her hand out of the way, the darkness flowing over the skull until the entire thing looked a bit like a swamp monster. smilies/icon_xp.gif

The shadow kept her grip on Rave's left hand as the two of them looked at their slightly gruesome creation for a moment. She raised her free hand over her mouth, her shoulders shaking as her eyes narrowed in silent laughter.

Rave looked from her dark twin to her bloby representation of Damion and had to smile sheepishly herself, wondering what choice words Damion would have for her if she summoned his spirit back into her creation as it was right now. "I guess you have a point, it isn't much of a work of art now is it?" smilies/icon_sweatdrop.gif

"Well, when I make other things that I want to last more than a few moments, I like to mix in a little blood to make the shadows remember what I wanted them to be... especially when I am distracted and can hardly remember my name let alone what I asked you guys to do or be for me!" She held out her hand to her shadow, palm up. "If you wouldn't mind? Just try not to cut too deep... bone cuts hurt even after they have been healed."

The shadow managed to look doubtful for a moment before her shoulders shrugged and her left hand flicked out at Raven's right. Four long dark slashes appeared across Rave's palm, welling with a blood that was almost as dark as the shadows under the light of the stars.

Raven winced a bit, not because the slashes hurt, actually she winced because they didn't hurt! And that meant that they were very deep, and they would hurt like hell if she didn't get around to healing them quickly. Her fingers were already going numb as she reached out and placed her bloody palm on the chest of the shadow creature, closing her eyes as she brought to memory every detail of Damion that she could recall while pouring those memories into her blood.

The shadow creation grew to more closely resemble a man with every beat of her heart, with every pump of her blood into it's body. There were almost no details, it was all black on black really, but the darkness around the head changed to look more like a nose and ears, lips and eyes over the contours of the skull. Wide, muscled shoulders... strong arms and a broad chest, fingers formed around the hardened bones at the ends of the arms, now obviously hands and digits instead of blobs. Waste and hips, legs, feet and toes.... Now Raven was obviously sweating, her fingers white as she clutched at her shadow's hand for the strength that her other self had to offer, but she was still smirking as she added in genitalia.. too proud, and female, to leave her creation like a sexless ken doll.

As she slowly drew her hand back a few bits of shadow stuck to her palm sealing over the cuts like bandages. Raven opened her eyes and wiped the sweat off her brow as she smiled. Now it was much more like Damion, even if it was as dark as a starless night!

"Well, now for the hard part..." She let out a sigh and closed her eyes again as she set her mind to finding the soul of her friend... even though she had no real clue how to do that. Maxi could see souls, and Munin could call to souls... but Raven was neither of those beings, perhaps her Shadow or Nocturne would have an idea of how she could finish this last, and most important, part of her casting.

58Eternal Dirge

In a normal swamp, Raven would have been correct in assuming no creatures would try to make her a feathery meal. In this swamp, in the swamp of Dagon, this was not always the case. Like nuclear radiation his influence had spread into the minds of the creatures that called this place home and warped them drastically. Alligators were bigger, at times more aggressive, and seemingly harmless animals held deadly secrets. But here in this glade they would not touch her, too close to the source to be considered healthy.

They fled as the shadows of the land rose up at her command, the few brave enough to have come to see what was up that is. Their primitive minds were far from making a civilization but that did not mean they wanted to become various items of clothing or useless accessories. One kind of creature did remain to watch, the Swamp Elves, who hid in the low brush and the highest points of the dead trees as this 'Witch' performed her magics.

The body of shadow was made with care and if not precision then enthusiasm. It stood silent and waiting as Raven began to ponder on the task of finding Damion's soul. It didn't feel the questing, investigating hands of one lone spirit.

" Word."

The problem with attaching oneself to a place through the occasional splash of blood and dear devotion was that even in death you sometimes stayed for abit until whatever was supposed to come and get you came and charged you 2 bits of silver to move on. Damion had done much of that, dedicating himself to this swamp and its inhabitants until his despair at his own shortcomings had led to this. He floated around the body and Raven and even Ravens shadow, seeing no need to use his legs anymore.

" Wonder who it's for?"

He had arrived alittle late in the procedings, missing much of the first half and only just arriving for the swamp monster appearance. It looked vaguely like him, but thanks to his interpretation of the spirit world everything was rather hazy when looked at too closely. He had tried to peek out of the corner of one eye, then the other, before giving it up as futile. The impossibility of a spirit having blindspots hadn't yet occured.

Damion felt rather peaceful now that he was dead, or atleast a spirit. No concerns or cares and the brooding lump that had been the Dagon in his mind had been unlocked and cast adrift. Apparently it didn't have any time for being dead. Slowly, Damion let himself drift upwards, floating above the scene in a lounging position. No job now but to wait, right?

59Maximos

"Oh Raven..." His voice was soft, amused and on the verge of a laugh. But most of all, it was entirely inaudible to the priestess. There were limits to the child-god's power, he was after all still sealed away. He could act through her and even without her immediate consent due to her position, but only so much and such acts were best reserved for times of need. Thankfully entering the woman's mind was always an effortless task. This was a place where Raven should likely have not been performing divine magic, and yet perform she did. While the swamp was the Dagon's realm, it was also the dead of night and night which fell equally everywhere, belonged to the Shadowfather. The boy rolled through the air like it was a fluffy mattress and cheerfully said, "...it doesnt have to be messy, just find a few pounds of flesh and...your a doctor, right?"

Cue maniacal villainous laughter. He vanished, as he always. His smile appeared beside her ear in a purely chesire manner and very softly said. "Pssst."

"You cant see him." An arm hovered just inside her scope of vision and pointed straight up to where Damion was hovering. Nocturne childish nature won over and instead of simply explaining the science of it all, he faded away and appeared behind the body Raven created, peering over its muscled shoulder and then tapping its head where a certain skull now rest. "But he can."

Body and soul, they sort of hungered for each other. Raven had created a body, the body did eventually need its own life force but like all shadow constructs could be made to at the very least act without one. The child god's body dissolved into black save for his smile and then only his smile remained as the black scattered. The toothy grin turned sideways and with laughter on its voice said. "Havent you ever seen Peter Pan?"

And then it was gone.

60HonoRaven

o.0 Rave was a medic, not Dr. Frankenstein... although the good doctor would likely have given her at least a nod of favor for her work thus far. So she had to smile a bit and shrug, figuring she had put too much work into the construct already, unwilling to believe there had likely been several easier ways to do this, but she had wanted something that Damion could be willing to attach himself too for the rest of his days.

Peter Pan? Raven was a cartoon junkie, the one thing she loved almost as much as Nocturne, was sitting on the floor in front of the sofa with a bowl of dry cereal and munching her way through the horrible plots of all the Saturday morning cartoons that she could catch... But for the life of her she couldn't figure out how pixie dust and happy thoughts could make this dream fly!

With a giggle to herself and another shrug she stepped forwards once more and placed her finger to the forehead of the shadow man, she carefully poured 'pixie dust' in the form of pure magical energy into the empty cavity where the human turned hydra's brains had once been. "Call to him... Call back the soul that once filled your bones with purpose... Call him and then bind him once more within you... Use the call of bones to spirit, the power of blood of my blood, and then bind him with the Name of Damion Hedley!"

Perhaps this was more along the lines of the Black Cauldron than Peter Pan, but it had been a long time since she had watched Peter Pan!smilies/icon_xp.gif

If this worked at all, the skull should have the power to tug at the spirit, to temporarily make the roaming ghost see things clearly, and to infuse it with the need to return to it's bones and this new body... at least long enough for Raven to lay one heck of a guilt trip on her friend!

61Eternal Dirge

There was a yank inside where his stomach would be, a pull towards the ground that was almost irresistable. It sank in like a fish hook and yanked somewhere behind Damion's navel, tugging hard. It is suffice to say that this was enough to pull him frm his patient waiting, pulled towards the ground like the skippers catch of the day. He fought against the pull, trying to fly higher into the sky, away from the command.

" ********>

He could hear Ravens words now, traveling along the tugging in his gut, repeated in his brain like some psychotic mantra. Arms flailing in the aether, he thrashed all the harder as his struggles proved to be for nothing. What was there to hold onto here? Spirits? This land seemed dead of them, and the trees offered no solace as he was dragged backwards towards the body with increasing speed.

His spirit body bounced and rolled on the ground until at long last it slammed home into the shadow body, never giving him the time to wonder at the contradictions of the spirit realm. With a hard and painful shock he became aware of things again, the sights and smells of the world he had left behind so abruptly. Damion tried to take in air, to fill lungs that had never been made, and instead found his mouth simply opening slightly.

This did not feel the same as his body, it felt like a glove, a second skin.

62HonoRaven

It moved! The shadow skin had moved all on it's own, she was certain of that, and so now she let go of her shadow self's hand so she could put both palms against the construct's chest, adding two last elements... two that would only work in this shadow creature if they had a spirit to cling to.

Raven had created this body like she would have created a humanoid body, although instead of tissue she had used shadows, but on the inside it had a lot of the same places as a person would have, an empty place for larynx, heart, lungs, stomach and digestive system, as well as a space for a spinal cord running up to the skull through the backbones, but shadows didn't really need these things as far as she knew, and since she couldn't take Maximos apart to see how he worked smilies/icon_xp.gif Rave had devised a different way for her construct to 'live'.

Through her left hand jumped a spark of energy, stollen form Jonothan Tommorow, the electricity would first jumpstart the 'heart' and then settle itself into the spinal cord, allowing Damion's new body to keep itself running without a thought from her or him. From her right hand came her mother's power of wind, flowing into the slightly open mouth, down the throat and into the lungs to start refilling her donated blood with oxygen as the heart started pumping a mix of blood and shadows through the veins of the new body. If Damion decided to stay he would likely figure out how to use the three elements that made up his body for things that had nothing to do with running his body...

"You in there Damion?" Her voice was a bit shaky with fatigue, and a tremor of freer... what if it didn't work, if he didn't come back? What if he had lied to her and had no intention of coming back... and would now be seriously pissed off at her?

63Eternal Dirge

Feeling suddenly leapt to his fingers, the spasm of electricity shocking nerves that didn't exist and forcing muscles that weren't there to spasm. Damion didn't feel the electricity, just the sluggish response of a body he was unfamiliar with. It was almost maddening with the way it moved and reacted and how he felt it all. Like his body was encased in a glove or something, or as if he were drugged out. His vision swam for aminute with the effort of moving his head, before finally settling on Raven.

" In where?"

He felt his lips moving, but not the breath that would normally shove the words into the air. Out of reflex he tried taking a breath only to find that the organs normally required to do so were absent on holiday. With almost herculean effort he bent his will into lifting an arm, feeling his right arm swing around to touch his bare chest. He could see it too and marveled at the black 'skin' that covered him. Was that what was making him move so oddly?

In all reality, He was moving just fine, the tethered perceptions of his mind not yet catching up with the fact that once again it was stuck inside a body. Pitch black eyes blinked and rolled, making it hard to tell where they were focused. He was a being made of shadow and sorcery after all.

64HonoRaven

A moment of triumph, just a flash of utter joy before Raven settled into the visage of a woman scorned as she glared at Damion. Now it was time to fulfill her promise in full!

"Listen carefully Damion....What is your last clear memory?" She stood before him, her bloody hands on her hips as she glared up at him. His body would be working just fine, he just had to take the time to figure it all out, heck, Rae had been quite unsettled when Grace and Verandi had resurrected her... she didn't really expect Damion to have a clear idea of what had happened and what would happen next, but she had to get his mind working again for them to get anything at all done before dawn came and she lost the power boost the dark of night gave her.

Raven's shadow stood behind her, her hands on the other woman's shoulders as she silently lent her strength to Rave, smiling up at Damion with indigo eyes. This was the sort of thing Raven should do more often in the shadows oppinion... They could easily create a proper race of shadow people on this world if the priestess would only exercise her power a bit more often, and forget about the limitations of the bodies of the current inhabitants of this world. Damion was quite a good start, although the shadow thought that Raven had tried far too hard to make him human again... but that was what second tries were for smilies/icon_4laugh.gif!

65Eternal Dirge

" Dying. I was quite content with that."

His mouth worked atleast, and as he became more assimilated with the body his perceptions sped up to match it. The jaw moved up and down to reveal more blackness within, no glimmer of light escaping. He worked the black fingers, lifting them up for inspection.

" Now....why am I black? I don't remember being black."

He knew good and well he hadn't been black, and this black was beyond any black he had experienced. This was the blackness of the stars, the soulless, lightless depths one found only between those infinitely distant suns. It would not have suprised him to find this odd covering colder than the ice of the mountains. His black eyes peered between his fingers down at Raven and her Shadow, momentarily confused as to her anger.

" This is the body Lord Dagon granted me, yes?"

He still held some fealty towards the being who had done so much for him, despite his failures. Maybe because it gave him a purpose beyond what he had ever thought for himself. Regardless, he couldn't understand Raven's anger with him.

66HonoRaven

"Your black because I haven't found a way to make fire stick together for longer than it takes for it to consume it's fuel....You are black because you made me believe that you were coming back!" Those last few words were hissed between her lips as a fine trembling started in her hands and worked it's way all through her body.

"This is the body Nocturne and I have granted you, so that you can keep from making a healer into a murderer! Your precious dagon has severed his connections to you, content with the new toys he created from your ritual, dagon let you die at my hands...let us both believe that it was only a small sacrifice, that you would continue to serve him after the penitence of death had been passed." With every word her voice got lower and the trembling became more obvious until she was shaking so hard she could hardly manage to spit the words out between her chattering teeth. "Well guess what! I killed you, so I brought you back, because I refuse to carry the guilt of your death with me for the rest of my very long life!"

67Eternal Dirge

His head jerked back abit, as if he had gotten too close to a pan of oil that chose that exact moment to start frying. Who in the hells was Nocturne? Why was she talking as if he wasn't ever coming back?

" How in the 9 hells do you know I wasn't going to come back? He told...me..."

Never beleive the words of beings whose lifespans are much much longer than yours. Damion felt the realisation wash over him like a dunk in icey water and immediately felt very betrayed and very foolish. He had known that nothing came back from death, not really anyways, or atleast in his admittedly limited experience you couldn't. He just wanted so much for it to be true so he could finally be of some help to this place.

And as she shook he stood rock steady, letting it all sink in slowly. For all anyone knew, he could have been a statue she was hissing at. Damion was content to let her yell and scream, because he didn't know yet what to say. Sometimes it was best to just stay quiet.

68HonoRaven

"And they told me that you were not coming back... since they are his newly chosen, and you were very dead... I had to believe them!" Raven looked down, scrubbing the annoying tears out of her eyes and managing to smear blood all over her eyes at the same time so that she looked more and more like the ghostly specter that Damion was supposed to be. "I told you I would drag your a** back if you tried to skip out on me, you should know by now that I bend the truth where I can, but I try really hard not to tell a lie..." Avoiding things was another trick she had learned, like avoiding explaining who Nocturne was...

The shadow behind Raven started to fade away, becoming nothing more than a dark patch on the ground behind her flesh and blood self. "So now you have a second chance... I suggest that you take it, and make of your life what you will. You did what your dagon wanted you too, now you should figure out what you want to do... and say goodbye properly if you chose to let your life end! No more of this summoning people just to watch you die crap!"

Her orange eyes were fierce once more as she glared up at him, wagging a scolding finger under his nose. "So, if you plan on sticking around for any length of time, the first thing you should figure out is how to make yourself some clothes...and you should be able to lighten the color of your new skin a bit, you have more than enough of my magic in that body to manage a little light manipulation."

And just like that she was done bitching him out, although Raven was still shaking, but weather from rage or exhaustion it was anyone's guess... Outbursts of extreme emotion and massive amounts of blood and power loss tended to make her just a tad wobbly smilies/icon_xp.gif

69Eternal Dirge

He caught Ravens words and saw the diverging path. She had failed to answer his question entirely, instead focusing on chewing him out further.

" Raven....who is Nocturne?"

He asked again, his voice soft as if to console. Deep down, some part of him wanted to taste the blood on her hands and go on to cause more of it to flow, and another part was sobbing over the sense of betrayal it felt. The elemental ignored both parts, pushed them aside as unnecessary and unneeded. One could be dealt with later, and the other would in time fade away or be replaced with blind fury.

" I don't care about the rest of that...I just want to know who this person is."

Especially if he owed them a part of his body it seemed. That they would help out and then vanish was likely, but their motives were bathed in secrecy and that was something that brought a twist of worry to his mind.

70HonoRaven

"Nocturne is... the being that gives me purpose, the reason why I still live." Truth, not a single word untrue or even slightly shady... but something told her this was a bad idea, a bad conversation to be having even if she didn't give a damn anymore about what people thought of her or her god.

"You should ask Maximos, he has known Nocturne much longer than I have... I'm certain that he could give you all the fine details. Me, I tend to see what I want to see! I see a little boy, far older than he looks, but with more tenderness to him than anyone else is liable to believe..." She couldn't help but to smile serenely, her eyes closing for a moment as she brought Him fully to mind once more...soon... hopefully she would be with him soon.

The priestess drew a measure of power from her little moment of wishful thinking, her eyes clear again as she looked up at Damion once more. "Don't worry, Nocturne was kind enough to show me how to snatch a spirit and tie it down long enough to tell it my mind, I doubt that he has much more interest in you... at the moment."

71Maximos

Raven had just said a whole lot, but at the same time Raven had just said nearly nothing. Which, when compared to the spirit of what it was to be a shadow and shadowy was absolutely correct. This circumstance was something special. The Shadowfather's voice was heard, without any visual representation. It would echo in Raven's ears soft yet powerful, kind and yet commanding...the formal deity rather than the playful child-god.

"You've done well. Your word is honored above reproach. And I must ask you more." Shadows rolled and leaned toward Damion in the same way grass rolls when a strong wind blows on it. This was not a hallucination, while the lean was soft Damion may notice it, if he chose to.

"A name is not enough. It carries question and doubt. This child needs more." Nocturne's voice took on a stronger tone, something near the sort of presence he used when inducting her as his chosen. "Tell him my priestess. Tell him so that he may see, and feel, and believe what this body already knows. Tell him, what I am."

72HonoRaven

He was being all formal in her head, and that always brought to mind the one glimpse she had of the man instead of the boy, and a slight blush crept across her cheeks as she summoned the courage to continue her explanation and give Damion what he really wanted.

"Nocturne is God of Shadows, God of the Night and dark places, Lord of nightmares...and so much more that I have only just started to see myself...You see Damion, you are now quite literally a Shadow of your former self!"

73Eternal Dirge

Damion stared down at her for a long moment. And then another. And then one more, just for good measure, as his brain flitted through infinite numbers of responses too fast or too damn stupid for him to give voice to any of them. It seemed like he had something to say and then just didn't say it until finally he lifted a hand and finger, opened his mouth and lowered both hand and finger.

" A god....another one?"

While he hadn't been so naive as to beleive Dagon had been the only god, in his limited experience with those of a divine nature he had really expected something alittle different. An otherworldly voice, vast shows of power, etc. Really no different from the occupants of the mainland. Those with power anyways. The "Shadow" bit caught him abit off guard, and or atleast wrong footed him vastly. Was that were Maximos got his power? What'd she mean he was a 'shadow' of his former self?

Just how much power did this new god have over him?

He couldn't help but begin to have a dim view of the gods, and added to his list of growing curiousities how long his body would last if a god had helped to make it, if such had been the case. He knew so little about creatures of Divinity, so very little.

" Why did he help you help me?"

The Dagons desires had been more of the material world, possessions, people, so on to increase it's power. There didn't seem to be a gain in Damion's mind, nothing he could provide this creature if indeed it wanted anything at all. It never occured to him that the gods may desire things other than what could be felt with the 5 senses.

74HonoRaven

"His motives are purely his own, but it had to have something to do with the fact that your death was breaking my heart...because only when I had given up hope of your return via dagon's hands did Nocturne intervene!" Raven had to sit down, her head was starting to pound, and her stomach was getting that tight gnawing feeling that she associated with hunger. In short she had used far too much magic this night to be having philosophical discussions on why gods did or didn't do things while standing in the middle of a smelly swamp.

Raven figured that Damion wasn't done with his questions just yet, and she didn't have any intention of leaving him alone until she was sure that he wasn't going to go right off an figure out a way to un-attach his soul from his new body the moment she turned her back on him. So she reached out and pulled a chair out of her own shadow, sitting down with a soft sigh of relief. "It isn't the first time he has stepped in to help me when I was on the edge of loosing the few marbles I have left... That is part of why I love him, Nocturne needs me, and I need him! Occasionally he asks me to do little favors for him, things that are rather difficult when you don't have a body of your own on this world, and in return I have the ability to draw on his power!" She tapped at the back of her left hand, the shadowy tattoo of a violet eye glaring at Damion for a moment again before she willed the lines back into invisibility.

"I am Nocturne's priestess, and he is my God... Not the first God I have served either, and by far and large I love him quite a lot more that the last one. Demi-gods are usually easier to deal with, but even they can be quite demanding when they feel that you owe them, Nocturne has yet to ask of me anything that I could not easily deliver." She smiled a bit at the memory of the last 'big' request, tasting the many fighters gathered for the final's after HoH 08... it had been hard, but not impossible, and she was rather proud of how she had managed to not get her a** kicked by any of those fearsome warriors.smilies/icon_xp.gif

75Eternal Dirge

That did not equate the mental formula's Damion had come up with to equal a god. Infact, that sounded more like the boss of a small business to him, the owner caring for his workers and everyone like some big sloppy family.

" Raven how many gods are there?"

He may as well have been asking how many stars there were in the sky, but if there were others out there like this Nocturne, he wanted the chance to find them. Damion had heard of other gods, but had never been able to place that title too them. To him they had just been people, people like any fighter he'd ever been blessed to face, who offered their services to the masses. The few gods whose names he did know he knew nothing about, not how they were worshipped or how they treated their followers.

He would spare little more thought on Nocturne, other than to possibly keep an eye out for such things. The shadowy eye on the back of Raven's hand gave him a symbol to look for. The massive shadow took a seat in the dirt and mud, crossing his legs under him and settling hands on knees. He would deal with the nudity issue later, and what he was going to do from here. This talk of caring gods was beginning to poke his earlier dispair into smouldering rage.

76HonoRaven

"Damion, Damion...I could name for you all the bones in your body, all the animals and insects in this clearing, and all the constellations currently visible in the sky more easily than I could hope to tell you how many gods there are!" She smiled slightly, leaning her elbows on her knees and then cradling her chin in her hands.

"Gods come and go, there is at least one for every religion that I have ever encountered... and they seem to gain or loose strength depending on their followers, although sometimes people follow gods without even knowing it!" She knew of a few like that, although some of them were disappearing of late.

77Eternal Dirge

This was news to him, and he briefly wondered how people went about worshiping without knowing it. That gods took power from their worshipers did make sense, and he stored it away. With that though, he came to wonder how the Dagon received its power. It had so few worshipers, but it had done so much to change his body and perceptions.

" With so many gods though, there aren't that many people on Gaia. How are they all worshiped?"

He had seen the clustered cities and the wide, uninhabited plains of Gaia and it didn't seem to him that there was nearly enough worship to go around. With that thought came another.

" Do I have to worship your Nocturne to keep my body?"

Damion did not want to sell himself out to another god so swiftly, not wanting to fall into some kind of unknown trap or set himself up for failure again. He would stay away from the gods if he could, let them hand themselves in their own ways and leave him well enough alone.

" With so many gods though, there aren't that many people on Gaia. How are they all worshiped?"

"Some are very, very old...and likely have very few worshipers left, but at some point in time they had enough power to keep them 'alive' through these lean times. There is power to be gained from the hearts and minds of people, and if people put enough energy into an intangible concept there are beings who are capable of gathering that power and wielding it, many of those beings are considered to be gods or have become the hero's of ancient legends as the stories of their lives get distorted throughout time... From what I have seen, a lot of gods dwindle or disappear as their followers die off or something happens in the world to shake the belief of those followers so drastically that they no longer have any energy to give a particular god!" Was there a difference between devotion to an idea and prayer or worship? Raven did not believe there really was... especially with Verandi to base her speculation on.

He had seen the clustered cities and the wide, uninhabited plains of Gaia and it didn't seem to him that there was nearly enough worship to go around. With that thought came another.

" Do I have to worship your Nocturne to keep my body?"

"I doubt it.." She smirked slightly. "From what I have seen Nocturne does not go around eliciting worshipers like some overzealous humans that I have seen... You are made of bone and blood, air and energy, as well as shadows... You might run into problems when I die, but I did try to make your body self sufficient. I would guess that all you really need to do is remember that your flesh is really shadows so it can be harmed by pure light as well as by weapons, but light can only truly destroy a shadow if there is nothing left to cast a shadow!" Deep concept there... not unlike 'if a tree falls in a forest and there is no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?' only this concept worked on 'If the light is bright enough, does it destroy the darkness, or only temporarily banish it?'.

Damion did not want to sell himself out to another god so swiftly, not wanting to fall into some kind of unknown trap or set himself up for failure again. He would stay away from the gods if he could, let them hand themselves in their own ways and leave him well enough alone.

With all these deep thoughts Raven was certain to ruin her reputation as a bird brain smilies/icon_xp.gif "But to be safe you might want to try and ask him yourself... He really is a sweetheart once you get to know him and he might have something to offer you besides the power that I tried to put into your new body!" Ah the blind devotion of love...

79Eternal Dirge

" I'd rather not have to, and I'd rather not put myself in any more debt than I already am."

Damion chose to ignore what he was made of, thinking on it made him feel unnatural and uncomfortable ontop of simmeringly angry. He dug his fingers into the dirt, trying to use the feeling of the cool, damp earth to keep his mind on things other than that sense of betrayal. He came up with more questions then, those should help.

" You said light can hurt me, like sunlight?"

He wasn't a vampire and took great pleasure from laying out in the sun and soaking up warmth. The moon didn't provide the same things, no warmth from its rays, and the former Hydra had no intention of staying around in the shadows the rest of his unnatural life.

" Can I still taste things?"

In retrospect, this was likely something he could test out later, but the more questions he asked the less he could feel the red mist decending over his eyes.

"Nope, I was talking about things like this..." Raven drew on her stolen bit of Ryugi as she took her hands from her chin, lightly clapping them together and then drawing them apart to create a foot long, slim rod of shining bright light. "...this, would likely burn you as easily as electricity burns me. But I would have to hit you with it to hurt you, just as I would have to stick my finger in an electrical outlet for that energy to hurt me!" She absently set the rod to spinning between the fingers of her right hand, making the shadows of the night flicker and dance all around them by the bright light it cast.

"Just like Maximos and Teirra can walk out in the sun so too can you, actually when you think about it, normal shadows gain substance from sunlight, fire light, and electrical light... They are simply not as strong as the pure darkness!" Light was the difference between a shadow and Darkness, and Raven fully believed that without light there would be no shadows, just as without shadows no one would understand the concept of light!

"You should still be able to taste, smell, touch, hear, and feel... although as an unnatural being you might find your perceptions of some of those senses have changed. For instance, I don't need to eat things like bread, vegetables and candy anymore.. I gain no real energy from them, but my memory tells me that I like those things, and my body assures me that they do no real harm while I can still relish in the crisp salty goodness of fresh popped popcorn!" She smiled happily at just the thought as she twirled the rod over the back of her hand and flipped it to her left without looking, catching it and then spinning it around her fingers again... no magic, just the ease of decades of practicing the simple tricks that could make knife fighting look just as flashy as the fencing dances. "You might feel the same... your body will not run on food or sleep alone like it used to, now you should gain more vitality from relaxing in the darkness or by tapping into a ley line and re-energizing from the power of Gaia herself!"

So chances were he still bled the same, and thankfully he could still go out in sunlight. Damion stole a glance at the dark hole in the ground that led to the temple of Dagon, glaring at it before looking back at Raven.

" Raven, how static is my body?"

He took his dirty covered fingers out of the ground, flexing them for amoment before digging new holes in the ground with them. If he was no longer muscle and skin, how much weight could he lift? What was his strength like? He'd have to put the new body to the test before he figured out where he'd go from now on. No good as a Guard, only half useful as a delivery boy. Perhaps he'd just wander around for abit, see more of the world than he had been seeing lately.

82HonoRaven

"Static?" o.0 She blinked at him a few times, wondering if this was more on the topic of electricity before it dawned on her as she watched him dig his fingers into the earth again. "Ah, substantial! You are as substantial as I am Damion... I can use magic to do a lot of things but at the end of the day I am still made of bones and blood the same as you! The only difference is that I am covered with feathers, fur, or skin whereas you are covered with the darkness of the night made touchable! Your body temperature is likely a lot lower than mine but your strength should be as inhuman as mine. Unless you figure out how to force that new body to change from the shape that I have molded it into, you are as 'static' as a tree, capable of growth, damage, and healing but unchangeable without serious outside influence!" He could be 'pruned' of limbs if he wasn't careful, and he could watch his blood flow out all over the sand if he felt like it... but he would find it rather difficult to simply will himself out of existence, after all he had the blood of a once immortal flowing through his veins now in a much larger quantity than when she had tried to heal him after their first stint in Heaven or Hell together. There was a lot of magic in that blood, potential for a lot of new choices!

83Maximos

He didnt want to do this. He didnt want to say this. Every step Nocturne took out into the open was a risk and he weighed them all carefully. He had nothing against Damion. Or in truth, nothing for Damion. It was the principal of the fact.

Gentle, cool hands came down on Raven's shoulders. Soft, yet strong. Nocturne did not hover this time, but trotted up in the grass beside her, calm and slowly, a somber expression on his face. "Raven...my Raven..."

Nocturne said, his voice carried a tone of the rare motion of regret behind it. He took a short breath and then spoke for all the world sounding like a parent telling a child that their small pet animal had just run into the street and met its end. Only, instead of a cat, dog, or turtle's obituary, Nocturne said. "He cannot stay like this."

He gestured to Damion, who, was using questions and a good amount of control to keep a red tide of anger at bay. Anger, primal rage, an element the man was known for wielding. "Can you feel the heat of his indignation? Can you taste it?"

The Shadowfather shook his head softly. "This boy is a beast of battle. He is a being of the physical and the flesh not the spirit and the arcane. The rush of adrenaline. The pounding of his heart in his chest. The feel of sweat dripping from the pores. The ache of muscle. He savors the feel of hot blood on his skin and every carnal experience that is combat is and more...are his air and water."

He let that sit for just a few careful seconds, looking Raven sympathetically in the eye the entire time, and then he softly continued. "And all of that has been taken away. Without it, he is very much still dead."

He sighed, and rest a hand on her hand. "I give you no orders my priestess, you have kept your word and may do as you please. You have created a masterful form. But if he truly is your friend he deserves to know there is another way. Perhaps even, to be given the chance to find the flesh he may wish to inhabit on his own and by his own code of morale. But..."

He squeezed her hand softly his skin chilled against hers, then shook his head and met her eyes evenly. "Unless he truly desires this body, his soul will break its ties with it and slip free. To trap a soul, is to incur the notice of the Reapers. He is not of mine. I may not interfere with him unless he requests it."

84Eternal Dirge

That definately hindered the old desire that had pushed its way into his brain. He had been wondering if this body could be molded into a more effective killing tool, but in the end he'd do things as he always had. The old fashioned way. As he drug his fingers out of the dirt now, the bits of dirt clung in a more form-fitting fashion, long and pointed like a bears claws. These he dug through the ground in furrows that stretched from infront of his knee to behind his body.

It was not unlike a wild animal pawing at the ground in agitation.

Even trying as hard as he was Damion was having a hard time holding back that killing urge, his eyes turning a dim, dark red instead of the everpresent blackness of his new body. His lips pulled back from his teeth for amoment before reason reasserted itself and he shot to his feet in a rush.

" I've got to go Raven, I can't stay here."

His voice was quick and hurried, fingers bent to accomodate the new 'claws' he had attached. Leaving the swamp would be a good way to test his new body, but he didn't want to leave Raven unattended. His arms felt odd though, and he tensed experimentally to see if he could feel the issue. Only the tense he felt never came, the constriction of muscle mass and the tightening of skin missing from his action. That was worrisome.

85HonoRaven

Raven looked at Nocturne in confusion... She quite obviously did not get it, but that was likely due to the fact that she did not want to get it... She was a creature of passion herself, although that passion rarely turned to the rush of a fighter and she didn't want to believe that someone who had friends and loved ones would rather die than learn to live again. She understood sacrifice, she came from a time where sacrificing oneself at the will of one's god was quite a normal practice, and was considered honorable...but he had been expecting his dagon to resurrect him, he had promised to come back! Now he was back, so she didn't see what the problem was...

Why wouldn't he want to stay in this new body? Why wouldn't he want to take this chance at a new life and make it all his own?

Even trying as hard as he was Damion was having a hard time holding back that killing urge, his eyes turning a dim, dark red instead of the everpresent blackness of his new body. His lips pulled back from his teeth for amoment before reason reasserted itself and he shot to his feet in a rush.

" I've got to go Raven, I can't stay here."

Her confusion turned to an icy rage in the blink of an eye as she glared at Damion, now sensing his own rage and wondering for the first time if it was directed at her. "Are you mad at me for what I have done Damion? Why wouldn't you want this new body, this new chance? Did you really mean to make me into a murderer earlier this evening?" He still hadn't answered that last question, and now she was mad enough that she really needed to know...

She didn't know what this other way could be that Nocturne had spoken of, she didn't even want to think that she might have spent so much of herself to make someone happy, only to find that she had in fact made them as desolate as she had been before Nocturne had granted her wish.

Raven had been treating Damion more like her own child than she had the two issues of her flesh... willing to guide and support him while he learned to live again, and the wound in her heart that his death had created was torn wide open again now at the thought that he might betray her all over again by simply refusing to live...

86Maximos

"No, no, no." Nocturne said, shaking his head and her hand with it making a blur if indigo locks.

"Not death. Flesh. Shadow my dearest is not an element of life. Living in a shadow is a dark reflection of real life. All the trappings and details of such are numbed and lacking in comparison to the real thing." Nocturne squeezed her hand tighter. There was no way to explain how much Damion did not only enjoy those details, he was a unique sort of creature that required them.

"He does not need to die, but he does need real flesh and blood. My powers cannot create such. He must find it, or harvest it. You yourself have created and regenerated living tissue, you can breath life into whatever he finds, and the Paladin can sew the soul to the meat." He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it gently. "He does not need death. But he does need a reason to live, and a true form to live in. You have provided a perfect foundation, now he must work for what improvements his deity failed to give him. Now quickly...before he leaves, quest him to collect his own new form. Or...you may as well lose him."

87Eternal Dirge

Her flash of anger sent a spike through Damion, his eyes snapping back to her and flaring open before they resumed a more normal position.

" Mad at you? No dear Raven, I'm not."

He had to force the words to sound controlled, and even then he didn't think he'd succeeded.

" I'm just mad. And no, I didn't mean to make you a liar, I fully beleived the lies of my....Lord Dagon..."

Now he sounded angry, the words coming out through clenched teeth before he began to simply walk forward, moving past Raven stiffly. He very much needed to be gone from the swamp, needed a place he could calm down, or something he could hurt with a reasonable chance of it killing him. There was no thrill otherwise. To look at his body signs, one wouldn't be able to tell he was angry. No muscles tensed or tightened, not stress showed through that stone like body.

His clawed fingers were the only real clue to his feelings. His heart beat no wardrum in his chest and head and that sent more pulses of rage through Damions tethered spirit. His body should have been reacting, but instead it was like pouring water into a deep well, from a thimble. The lack of feeling was maddening.

88HonoRaven

This was getting annoying, Raven tried really hard not to let it be annoying, but it was getting that way... these two needed to find a way to talk to each-other, because she was obviously a bad go-between smilies/icon_xp.gif

"A quest then...a chance to do something." She turned her head to look at him over her shoulder, having to blink a few times at that simple movement brought on a nasty dizzy spell, reminding her to reabsorb the little light rod in her free hand before she used up what little energy she had left. "To find yourself a more satisfying existence than this shadow life! That should get you moving, and give you something to think about as well..."

She glanced at Nocturne again, hoping she had the right idea this time.

89Eternal Dirge

The large shadow slowed his pace before stopping completely, turning his head to look back at her over his shoulder. In the night, to the human eye he would be impossible to see, just more shadow on shadow. But Raven would undoubtedly catch the rolling motion of his shoulders, the thoughtful cast of his face.

" Like...what?"

He didn't think it would really help, whatever it was. But that may have been the anger and despair talking, the belief that nothing could go right now. His clawed fingers flexed, or atleast gave the semblance of flexing. Damion felt like nothing more than a living suit of armor, no muscles just smooth, flawless motion. The shadows of his body simply filled in the gaps when his limbs moved, without any real motion. Just smoke in the air.

It was infuriating, but Raven had set his mind on another path altogether. Perhaps a quest was just what he needed, something to test his body with, test his limits. Whatever those were anymore.

90HonoRaven

"Go find your own body, or bodies if that is the case... a little of this, a lot of that... whatever strikes your fancy in the manner of a form. All real flesh! Preferably still dripping blood, or at least packed in ice... coagulation is a serious b***h to reverse in a lot of mammals... then bring it back to me and I will force-heal it into a whole, then we will go find Maxi and he can transfer your soul from this body to the new one..." She leaned mostly on Nocturne, and partially on the back of her chair, feeling the growing need to find someplace safe to pass out sometime soon... or at least find someone to snack on, swamp elves were not on her dietary plan smilies/icon_xp.gif "I would suggest that you think through each part though, once I put it all together I am not going to willingly change out parts like you are some macabre Mr. Potato Head doll!"

91Eternal Dirge

" You mean like frankenstein.....cobble together a body?" The idea was repugnant and attractive at the same time. Attractive in so far as he'd have a warm, living body to inhabit and live the rest of his life in, and repugnant in the manner of the putting it together. The very thought of putting a body together out of corpses was disgusting to an extreme.

" I'm rather tired of magic Raven, are you sure it would even work? I'm grateful for this body, but I don't think I could handle the upset of a last ditch effort failing me."

It was hard enough dealing with his anger right now, the empty feeling just bringing more and more of it out. It was like a living thing seeking to fill up his body with all the old feelings and finding nothing there to fill. His eyes still glowed dimly with the threat of restrained violence, though from a distance they were harder to see. Quite suddenly Damion lashed out, thick diggers claws smashing into and then through the rotting dead wood of a near at hand tree and sending chunks of it flying. Even as it toppled, the black body kept moving, smashing more and more of it until little was left to hit the ground in one peice.

He let loose a primal roar of unsatisfied fury, head tilted back and eyes on the moon as if it was somehow the cause of his emptiness. His fingers were clawed up, palms towards the sky at his side but he may as well have been a statue for as much as the rest of his body reacted. He resembled the kind of statue old primitive cultures would have worshiped, a murderous god of war and violence perhaps.

He resembled a child having a temper tantrum from where she was sitting, but Raven was smart enough to keep that opinion to herself...

She looked to Nocturne in resignation, the corners of her eyes starting to well with unshed tears as the exhaustion won out. "I messed up, didn't I?" smilies/icon_sweatdrop.gif

"I tried to make it better, but I just don't think the way he does..." Right now Damion could have turned that rage on her, or Dagon could have slithered his way out of the swamp and she wouldn't have given a damn either way, too tired and too sad at what appeared to be yet another magical failure.

93Maximos

"I messed up, didn't I?" Oh those eyes, they were heartbreaking eyes, but Nocturne didnt look heartbroken anymore at all. He looked like he was just about on the verge of laughter, and not the mocking sort either! He leaned over, putting a hand on Raven's leg and using it to lift himself high enough that his other hand could poke the edge of her nose. "Your so silly."

And then he slid down and back beside her. "I'm sure its very frustrating. But he has no one to blame but himself. He said he would have gone through with the ritual even should you not have been there."

Nocturne chuckled and spun a gold and purple bracelet idly around his wrist. "He certainly could not have expected the red carpet, its not easy to put a stopper in death. Its ugly and crude work, that is why it is favorable one avoids being impaled through the heart as opposed to requesting it explicitly. If he's tired of anything, its his own mistake. He is going to run his course Raven dearest. The fact is, if he wants precious flesh he'll hunt it. If he does not and he does not accept this body you have gifted him, it will start to fall apart and eventually fade away. If he is upset that you did not resurrect him from his own blunder into ideal conditions well or misses the spirit world well...he can go back. Countless mortals die every day."

"I tried to make it better, but I just don't think the way he does..." Nocturne shrugged casually. Anger. Revenge. Primal instincts. It seemed he could relate, it showed on his face as he watched Damion roar, but it was just as clear he did not expect Raven to start thinking that way. "No matter what he decides my dearest, your job here is done. He will neither fade away or assemble the flesh required here, tonight, as you sit and wait. You have done all that is within your power and fulfilled your word. You have done well. The rest is out of your hands."

94HonoRaven

Raven sighed again as she pulled herself to her feet. "Yes, out of my hands..." She looked at those bloody hands again, allowing her shadow to discard it's forced shape as a chair.

"Well, Gambino should still be bustling, the casino never really closes, so breakfast and then a nice long nap." She was talking more to herself to keep going than anything else, not really looking forwards to finding that 'breakfast', or in getting to Gambino in the first place.

Damion was on his own as Hono scraped together the power to disappear in a cloud of black and purple sparkles, leaving behind the swamp, hopefully forever....

95Eternal Dirge

after consideration, I've decided to retcon the s**t out of Damion dying. it was a poorly thought out idea, and thus I'm going to move on with my plans to modernize, or atleast advance the character in other directions.
