Tyr-Kana Ruins, Syntaxis

City of the Shades

DESCRIPTION - LOCATION - PEOPLE - RESOURCES - MYTH/LORE

Long long ago, far before steel and gunpowder ruled the earth, there was an ancient race known as the Tyr-Kana. Their war like attitude eventually led to their disappearance, and now all that remains is ruins.

More recently there is a group of creatures desperately trying escape their warlike nature. They have picked up the pieces of the ruins.

------DESCRIPTION---------------------

Shitty map when I get my scanner working

The grand city of Syntaxis is built in three parts: The lower city, the residential rise, and the upper city. The lower city being built at the bottom of the mountain, the upper on a plateau carved into the mountain and the residential rise connecting the two.

Though the once grand city is now in disrepair. The beautiful stone architecture reminiscent of the Mayans or Aztecs has long since fallen to piles. Grand staircases have become dangerously unstable, some walls could allow for armies to walk through, and some entire sections of the upper city have collapsed into pitfalls. Some of the towers and walls have been patched by the Shades, but construction has not progressed far.

New construction is limited, but it’s obvious what was built by the Tyr-Kana and what was built by the Yellow Eyed Shades. Where the Tyr-Kana built elaborate structures made to impress, the shades build simple and practical buildings from the salvaged material. Another difference is the use of Shadesteel, a metal created by the corruption of earth by Forgotten Matter. Long bands of the metal secure single room communal domiciles built into the walls or on their own.

Primary Ruins - What was once the lower city is perhaps in the worse shape of the entire ruin. Wind, snow and time has torn down walls and turned buildings into piles of rock. Rather than repair this section the shades use it more of a quarry to gather material for the upper city.

Shade patrols wander through the lower city to ensure nothing is hiding out or assaulting the worker shades.

The Residential Climb - The rising stairs that connected upper with lower city was the home of the middle class in Syntaxis’ prime. Specially built structures creating building on either side and one row in the centre marked a divided highway of stair and ramps. Now it serves as a convient chokepoint for the shades. Guards are posted all along the buildings and walls to protect the privacy of the recluse race.

The Climb cuts through the upper city and leads to the Market centre.

Market Centre - Once apon a time the centre of the upper city was an important location if one wanted to be a trader in the Tyr-Kana empire. While much has changed this area still bustles with movement. Shades work to create objects for the few non-shade residents of the city to trade with the outside world. Weapons, armour, or even elaborate jewellery from the jet shadesteel. This is also where the non-shade residents or visitors stay, inns are kept as comfortable as possible with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains thanks to the mana gardens. Meat and dairy has to be imported in, thus one is more likely to find a hunk of cheese than a steak.

Shade Mezza - What used to be the upper class section of Syntaxis is now the main shade residential area. Simple one room domiciles erupt from where ruins once were, and the more elaborate houses of the past have been mostly hollowed out to become communal houses.

The southern section of the Mezza has collapsed, and rock pile walls have to keep people out of the dangerous area.

Mana Wells - On the opposite side of the city of the Mezza lies the mana wells. These devices are what allow the shades to live peacefully away from the rest of Gaia. The device, pilfered from the Tyr-Kana and improved by the Shades, looks like a ruined stone pyramid floating upside-down over a similarly ruined altar. Four pillars surround the altar and a Bishop Shade stands watch maintaining the mana well. From this the shades are able to draw magical energy from Gaia itself, and exist without constant slaughter to consume souls. There are a few addition uses of the Wells:

Mana Lights - Throughout the city crystalline orbs are imbedded in the stone walls. At night they give a soft blue glow to the dark rooms and laneways of the city.

Disruption Field - Thanks to runes created by Shade Bishops, the wells emit a field that makes the large amount of magical and forgotten energy emitted by the shades hard to pinpoint.

Mana Gardens - Surrounding the two outdoor wells are elaborate gardens of fruit and flower. The wells raise the temperature and sustain the plants that could never be able to grow in such a cold climate. Shade gardeners and Shades just looking to rest their minds can often be found wandering the stone paths.

Shadow Pools The third well is inside a large stone structure rather than in the open. Rather than actively release energy, this Mana Well stockpiles what it collects in the form of liquid Forgotten Matter. Jet black liquid cascades from openings around the raised well into the closed off pools that take up most the structure. This is also where Shade smelters spend the day transforming forgotten matter and elemental earth into Shadesteel.

The Ruined Palace - The military and intellectual helm of the Yellow-Eyed shades. The once giant chambers have become training grounds, while temples and spires have become places to do research. It is here Omikron and other high ranking shades slave away deciphering the Tyr-Kana Mystic texts.

------LOCATION---------------------

Syntaxis is settled in the far north mountain ranges of the main continent. Wind is troublesome if you are not within the sheltered walls of the upper city, and even then the cold carries. While the winter is not permanent, its harshness and the relative isolation of the mountains leave few travellers to stumble by the city.

------People---------------------

The current inhabitants of the ruins are the Yellow-Eyed Shades led by Shadelord Omikron. These creatures have freed themselves from the violent yoke of The Forgotten One and yearn to live in peace.

Shades are for all intents and purposes, mostly humanoid. Their bodies are made entirely out of a jet black substance known as Forgotten Matter. The substance is not alined with shadow though, rather shares more traits with nullifying magic and raw arcane. The material is fairly malleable, and if a shade trains they can learn to stretch and distort their bodies into tools or deadly weapons. Other shades focus on hardening an outer layer of forgotten matter, giving them a permeant appearance of wearing plate armour. The most distinctive mark of a shade is rather than a face they have a single, and quite large, eye. The iris takes up almost the entire eye, and its colour depends on the Shadelord the shade serves under. Omikron’s colour is yellow. The Shades under Omikron have taken to sometimes wearing bulky human clothing to protect themselves from the elements. Simple hats, scarves, cloaks, and mantles are all popular.

85% of shades are mute and can only communicate telepathically with other shades. They have their own script, which is mostly used for runic inscriptions on weapons and objects. Shades mostly appreciate calm and relaxing actives, but some are still know to enjoy the thrill of combat.

------RESOURCES---------------------

Forgotten Matter - Formally known as “dark matter”, this substance is what the shades themselves are made of. Jet black not because of the property of darkness, but rather because Gaia itself is trying to purge itself of all memory of the Forgotten One. Since the shades were born out of the material of The Forgotten all creatures cannot visualise the true nature of the material. It would be like trying to imagine a colour that is not a mixture of the ones we know currently.

Shadesteel - The black hued metal created from forgotten matter and elemental earth is a tradable commodity. While it is not an impossibly strong material, it holds up to normal steel and is quite a bit more magically resistant.

Magical Energy - The inhabitants of Syntaxis do not think of the Mana Wells as much more than a source of nourishment. In truth, those magical generators could be used for much more.

------MYTH---------------------

Designated Hero Wrote:

The Tyr-Kana are a strange race in that their long, gradual ascent to power was followed almost instantaneously by their sudden disappearance. Initially used as slaves, the Kana, as they were originally called, were a race of cat-like imps that had a lifespan of only a few years at most. The Kana, through years of artificial selection, began to grow stronger, live longer, and flourish as a species. They eventually evolved into biped, bilateral creatures that resembled a human with claws, cat-like ears and a scale-like pattern that ran down the length of their back. As all slave societies do at some point, an uprising occurred, and the Kana threw off the shackles of their masters.

That was not the end of their growth, however. Living in an area where predators were numerous, the Kana continued to struggle for survival. Their proximity to the gods only produced more evolutionary pressure upon them, as the gods consistently found joy in tormenting the beleaguered race. Resistance to sudden death was soon a common trait among the entire population, and became a vital role in their next evolutionary leap.

Fed up with being seen as mere playthings, two Kana lead their people on a crusade. They burned temples, killed pilgrims, and weathered the wrath of Sirtos, greater god of pestilence, upon themselves. The Kana were nearly wiped out by the god's fury, yet somehow their race survived. When Sirtos fell at the hands of two Kana (Valan Keil and Kyrein Traveska, as they came to be known in the texts), something strange occurred. The void of power caused by the fallen god had somehow empowered the race, giving the former slaves the power to survive unopposed in the Northern regions of Gaia. The Kana had become far more human in appearance, forgoing the cat-like appendages and only retaining the ringed irises that they were famous for.

As a result, the Tyr-Kana had become the dominating race over their entire region. Their society evolved along with the race. Instead of taking up the lives of nomads, they began to settle new regions. Syntaxis, a cultural and economical hub, became their greatest achievement. Kyrein and Valan became the militaristic and religious leaders of this new city, respectively, and surveyed its construction. Valan was responsible for ensuring that the city itself would be nearly impossible to take by force, while Kyrein was in charge of most residential, commercial, and religious construction. The resulting city became a two-tiered representation of the Tyr-Kana's might, and acted as the civilization's unofficial capital.

Their cultures and customs were based mostly around genetic and phenotypic traits. Citizens that had golden rings upon birth were the favored sons of society, becoming warriors and leaders for the group as a whole, while those with different colored rings were assigned various tasks. White rings were raised as the religious leaders, while purple rings were destined to become merchants and craftsmen, supplying most of the goods that powered society.

As the race flourished, they began to grow increasingly intelligent. Land became favorable, and they set out on campaigns to conquer distant territories. The more land that came under their influence, the more they began to revere warfare as a chosen method of living. Warriors and generals became the most revered positions in the culture, leaving religious leaders with less and less power as time went on. These increasingly powerless but spiritualy attuned Tyr-Kana soon atracted the atention of a powerful, but corrupting, entity: The Forgotten One.

At their peak, the Tyr-Kana had spread themselves out in a wide circle, 500 miles in diamater, building smaller cities and villages on the extreme ends near coastlines and even establishing settlements close to modern-day Lament. Only Syntaxis, which was reduced to ruins following the society's own civil war, and Dimas, the religious capital that took sides with The Forgotten One, remain standing today. Both cities are located near the heart of the empire.

Soon after attaining this peak, a small conflict arose in Dimas, resulting in the death of two priests and one soldier. The army was ordered out of the religious center, and Dimas cut off all ties to Syntaxis. This single event would turn out to be a defining moment in the eventual downfall for the race.

As the rift between religious and military leaders grew even deeper, The Forgotten One used his powers of manipulation to spark a civil war between the two. Cities erupted into battle over night as Shades and religiously devout figures united against the armies of the Tyr-Kana. The resulting death and destruction fed The Forgotten, giving the shade armies power to decimate the Tyr-Kanan empire and force the armies of the golden ring to retreat into Syntaxis. After this point, the records of the war simply cease existing for a long period of time. Popular opinion is that the war came to a standstill in the city, and that any records that existed were more than likely destroyed during the chaotic fighting.

After a few decades, some recordings of their existence begin to spring up again. All traces of Tyr-Kanan society and cultures have been discovered in Murmillion texts and lore. The similarities between the two races were almost uncanny, and so many scholars believe that the Tyr-Kana never really went extinct, but adapted to Murmillion living.

Curriously, in most surviving texts all reference to The Forgotten have been neglected.

The Mythos of The Forgotten One

As translated by Shadelord Omikron

--- --- --- --- --- ---

3Designated Hero

And through the frigid northlands he had walked for days upon days, searching out the ancient ruins of his ancestors. Upon leaving the Heaven or Hell tournament, there was little else on Athan Cole's mind. First, recovery, and then the matter of tieing up loose ends. He needed a new weapon, supplies, and to converse with one of his teammates.

With all of that taken care of, he had left without so much as a word to the rest of his allies. Only Owle, who had some business with the Shade's leader, Omikron, was consulted before he left on his journey. And against his wishes, she had accompanied him into the frozen lands. How he had hoped to find this land was a mystery beforehand, but thanks to Owle's selfless actions via impalement, the disembodied spirit of his grandfather had somehow found it back into another one of Athan's swords, and was now acting as a guide.

With a pack of supplies tightly secured on his back over the flat of a newly crafted sword, Athan had braved the winter weather with naught but a head of increasingly shaggy hair and a tightly-wrapped cloak about him. His right arm was tucked securely away, being pretty much useless at climbing and traveling in general, it was better to keep it warm while the left hand held the cloak tightly clamped together. The hood was held in place only when the wind was at his back, and even then the swirling mountain air would do its best to knock it from his head. His journey had been long, arduous, and were it not for his assumption that they were right on the doorstep of the ancient city.

His cloak's hood had collected bits of moisture from his breath, which puffed out at regular intervals in front of him as he worked his way up snowed-over passages. Every now and then his hand would leave his cloak, gloved fingers sinking up to the elbow in snow as he struggled to keep his balance on the slicker passes. All in all, it was not a pretty adventure for the mercenary. Even his extreme tolerance for cold was beginning to be worn down as his body steadily ran out of fuel. Part of him wondered how Owle, or anyone else, would be holding up under the same conditions.

On top of that, he had left with three full sacks of dried meats and fruits. Now, he barely had a quarter of the original supply left.

"So what do you think, old man? Are we close yet?"

Just keep walking, I'll tell you when we're close.

"I don't know about you, but it's pretty damn cold out here in the world of the living. And last I checked, you had pretty bad arthritis. You wouldn't last half an hour out here, so why don't you tell me if we're headed in the right direction so I can stop entertaining the thought of leaving you here in the snow."

So that's the kind of attitude I get from the boy I helped raise? Your brother gave me a lot less lip.

"Yeah, well he's also dead. So you're stuck with me."

Hmph. Just crest this peak and...

"You're kidding me."

You said you wanted to know.

And that was the end of that. He partially regretted the sudden end to the conversation. With nothing left to distract him from his current situation, that biting cold was back, chilling him to the bone and making travel a general pain. Still, it could have been worse. He could have been on the wrong side of the continent, or out of supplies, or trying to defend Owle from all sorts of crazed abominable snow creatures. Speaking of which...

He turned over his shoulder, shouting over the billowing wind.

"How are you holding up?!"

4Owle Isohos

"Just peachy!" Owle shouted back, over the cold, roaring winds. Owle was wearing every piece of clothing she owned, all layered on top of one another for warmth, and had a great big winter coat and snow pants on top of that. The fluffy hood velcroed shut, so she didn't have to deal with the winds blowing it off her...just she had to deal with it being blown into her mouth every hour of every day.

Her coat and pants were both a deep, royal purple, the coat lined with faux white fur. She'd picked the color out because it was pretty, and she thought it went nicely with her blue hair.

Now, though, she wished she'd picked it out just because it was warm.

She was faring slightly better than Athan on the slick passages, her digging claws allowing her better purchase in the snow and ice than his boots. She had less endurance than he, but surprisingly was holding her own, keeping herself going out of sheer stubborn refusal to show him he may have been right not to want to bring her. For this same reason, she didn't complain.

Besides, Owle was no stranger to long journeys, and her endurance would probably surprise most who knew her only as the Firebrand's barkeep. The only thing that bothered her was the weight of the food she had to carry on her back, and the biting cold that seemed to seep through the fabric of her many layers of clothes. She had taken slightly less supplies than Athan, hunting for herself while they still remained in fertile lands, but she had to admit he'd been right once they got far enough north.

"Has Gramps told you where it is, yet?!"

5Designated Hero

"We're almost there!"

Athan stopped at that, craning his neck upwards. It wasn't like they had an extremely long ways to go to get over the mountain, probably five hundred feet at best, but going straight up meant climbing over a very icy rock face that offered nothing in terms of wind protection, so that meant feeling their way around the mountain until they had basically walked around it.

Thankfully, they were high enough that the mountain wasn't nearly as wide as it could have been. But it still meant another mile or two of walking before they could even begin their descent. And a mile or two at the pace they were going was going to take awhile.

His nose was starting to run, and so every few minutes he would stop to sniffle, bringing a lot of the snot back up into his nose and some down into his throat. It was a pretty annoying process, since every sniffle caused his nostrils to stick together for a few seconds. On top of that, he would pause every now and then, cough, and spit out what didn't stay down.

"If you're wrong about this, so help me..."

If I'm wrong, what? You're gonna die and leave me here all alone? Stop threatenin' a dead man and do what I tell ya. I swear, it's like you're five.

Freakin' old people.

6Owle Isohos

"Good!" Owle shouted back, turning her attention back to moving her numb feet.

The digging claws did have one drawback, and that was that they made it entirely impossible to wear most shoes. Her feet were bare, save for the armored scales, and that armor wasn't exactly insulated or anything. She was surprised she could still move her toes, even though she couldn't feel the muscles that operated them. It was surreal, watching them moving and feeling nothing.

Soon, she knew, it would probably be so cold they started burning.

She followed Athan's footprints through the snow, blundering along after him in the winter wonderland. Luckily her immune system was tough as nails, and she wasn't dealing with the sniffles.

"How close is almost?!"

7Designated Hero

He didn't bother to yell back at her, but he did speak at a normal tone, with his eyes facing forward.

"Not nearly close enough."

Talking was starting to become a pretty big annoyance. His throat was burning, and it was hard to take full breaths without feeling a burning pain. So he was resigned to taking quick, short breaths as he plowed along through the snow.

It was pretty apparant that Athan wasn't built for snowy conditions. Instead of walking on the top of snow, he basically took a step and sunk a half foot, which resulted in him taking extremely exagerrated stepping motions. His quads were burning, but he wasn't going to be the first one to complain about that.

Unless Owle spoke up again, Athan was content in travelling in complete silence for the next hour as they picked their way around the mountain. The old man was debating on whether or not to tell Athan what direction he should go next, since Syntaxis wasn't more than a half mile away from their current destination. The only problem was, even if it wasn't snowing, the blowing snow from the mountains was enough to cut down on visibility.

8Owle Isohos

Owle didn't hear his reply, but she assumed that was the case from his lack of an answer. Resigned, she continued trudging through the snow, moving after him in silence.

Talking would keep her from getting bored, keep her from thinking about the burning pain in muscles she didn't even know she had and the way her feet felt like large hunks of featureless ice. Concentrating on the pain wasn't helpful when trying to make it lessen.

Walking in his footsteps, she had a much easier time of things, since she didn't have to dig herself out of the snow at every step. But she was getting tired of everything being white, getting tired of the damn cold and the wind...

She had been tempted, more than once on this journey, just to drop her own pack in the snow, turn into a little bird, and curl up into Athan's. But doing so would admit weakness, and she wanted him to realize that she could handle herself despite his doubts.

9Designated Hero

And comin' 'round the mountain was Athan and Owle. They weren't riding six white horses, however. Instead, they were plodding along like they had been. A brief respite from the wind as a small outcropping jutted out from the mountain's side. Athan took that time to stop, and indicated that Owle do the same.

His hood came down, and he ruffled his hair, which had frozen together in clumps in some places due to the sweat and condensation from his breath freezing over.

Just about there, kid. I'm impressed.

"I'm touched."

Athan slumped up against the frozen wall, dropping down into a sitting position on the snow. While they may have been near their destination, a little rest was well-deserved.

10Owle Isohos

Owle leaned up against the rocky outcropping, sighing heavily as she allowed her muscles to rest at long last. She didn't want to sit down...that snow was cold, and she didn't want it all over her bum. She wasn't sure how easy it would be to get herself up again, either, if she gave into the temptation to sit now.

"By what?"

She also couldn't hear what Gramps was saying, so she had no idea what Athan was talking about.

And then...the big man collapsed into a sitting position, and Owle's will power just gave out. She, too, sank down into the snow, then looked to Athan, wondering something.

Whenever they took more than a brief rest in the colder parts of the world, Owle had become accustomed to asking Athan if she could just kind of...turn into a cat and curl up on him. Snuggling close to him beneath his cloak, she'd be able to feel his body heat seeping through his shirt, and give her own to him in return, keeping them both warmer than they would be separate.

11Joseph Brown

Through blowing snow all figures look like blurry black outlines. Sometimes they're tricks of the eye, and sometimes they're figures of danger yet to come. Of course it would be an odd moment if those figures never solidified as they the came closer.

This would be what was happening to Owle and Athan at that very moment.

Two hazy figures would begin to make their way towards the adventures, and while their cloaks would become clear their bodies would not. They were making slow cautious progress, seemingly ready to draw invisible weapons. You couldn't be too careful up around here. Eventually though the adventures would become more clear to this strange patrol, than the patrol would to them. It was at that moment the figures dropped all their caution and rushed towards the two. They wanted to ensure Owle and Athan were already.

Then all became clear, they never seemed more than black blotches because that's all they were. Shades were patrolling this area.

12Designated Hero

"Hey, Owle. You see that?"

Athan's eyes squinted as the black hues drifted in and out of the snowstorm. He wasn't too sure what that signified, so he would pull himself up to a standing position, cloak's hood falling away from his face as he reached up to grab his sword with his left hand.

"Tell me those are your friends."

And even as they rushed in to check on the two adventurers, Athan tightened his grip on the large weapon. Hopefully Owle would interject and tell him that they were friendlies, because he was already drawing that sword from its holding place and bringing it at the ready.

If she said nothing, Athan would be dangerously close to swinging at the oncoming shades. Since he really didn't want to wait to see what was approaching them so quickly.

13Owle Isohos

"See what?"

Owle groaned as she forced herself to stand up, slipping and falling under the weight of her pack on the first attempt. Grabbing a piece of the rock wall behind her, she fared far better and made it to her feet.

"Are those...people?" she asked, squinting through the snow at the indistinct blobs.

When she could see the yellow of their irises, Owle's face lit up with a broad grin. Why, she would have given a jump for joy if she wasn't bone weary and laden with a heavy pack full of food.

"Oh! Over here!" And she waved to the two shades, motioning to Athan that it was alright. "Yeah, it's them. Well, I don't know these two, but they're definitely shades, so..."

If no violence seemed immenent, Owle would warmly greet the Shades with a simple "Hello!"

14Joseph Brown

The two gave a hesitant pause when they were met with Athan's aprhention, but Owle's words seemed to set them back in motion. After the cheerful hello the two shades practicaly nodded in unison, unable to vocalize anything.

The shades then struggled with their extremly limited knowlage of human culture. In a desperate atempt to prove itself friendly one shade lunged forward and grabbed one of Athan's hands with both of theirs. It then proceded to shake it vigerously. The shade greeting Owle was quite a bit more reserved, and simply gave her a polite bow. That one understood that gifts were somewhat important in the outside world. After the bow it unbuttoned its heavy cloak and offered it towards Owle.

From there the shades would motion for them to follow, they would guide them through the ruins. If they apeared weary the shades would help them walk, and if they looked cold they would share their heavy cloaks.

15Owle Isohos

Owle placed a quick hand on Athan's shoulder, only after she saw the shade grab him. She meant to prevent any imminent violence on his part, but given her reaction time...well, it might have been too late to stop any immediate response.

If anything that happened was resolved peacefully, she would turn to her own shade and bow back. When offered the cloak, she instinctively put her hands out to accept...then pulled them back before he could give it to her.

"Don't you need it?" she asked, light brown eyes heavy with concern. She didn't want him freezing to death on her account, even if she was awfully cold and wouldn't mind another layer.

She would happily huddle under a cloak with one of the shades, and easily follow where they led, doing her best to step in their footprints. It would be tough going if she wasn't able to...while she was by no means as heavy as Athan, her feet still sunk into the snow, and she would have to spend some time pulling them out again.

16Designated Hero

"Hmph...if you say so."

Given that Athan only had one hand, and it was currently grabbing the hilt of a sword, it was kind of fortunate that he was in the process of putting the weapona way when the shade lunged forward at him. A bit surprised, Athan was attempting to draw the weapon out when his hand was grabbed, forced away from the sword, and pulled into a handshake. Owle's hand came onto his shoulder, and he looked at the hand that was shaking his own.

Eventually, he would return the gesture prior to pulling his hand away and placing his cloak's hood back over his head. He would follow the shades, carrying himself as if he did not need any help, although every muscle in his body screamed to the contrary.

17Crow Lord

Back in the distance, the Crow Lord watched, what he thought to be, his next blood meal. The thought of traveling any farther in this terible coldness, the Crow Lord spring into flight flying high over head with the rest of his flock, high enought to see the moving targets, but too high to be noticible my the naked eye, only to look like a storm cloud moving over head.

Seeing the four targets, the crow Lord gazed an thought to him self..

An easy target that girl will be, as long as I can get rid of the shades

...but already he had a plan.

18Joseph Brown

The shade would gladly throw its cloak over Owle, it didn't need it as badly as pure organic beings did. Still, it would be happier, and guessed the others would be as well, if they reached the city as soon as possible. Thus it began to lead the two into the lower ruins, while the hand shaker would take position as rear guard.

Unless interrupted, the shades would lead the adventurers into the lower city. Sometimes the walls and ruined buildings would provide some relief from the wind, while other times it would seem like they were walking through a wind tunnel. The scenery wasn't much better either, buildings covered in stone debris which was in turn covered by snow.

The residential climb didn't seem much better, as all it was was an extended hill with more ruined buildings. But wait, as they curved upwards there were new sights to see. Shade sentries would look out from the buildings on occasion to see the group being brought into the city. Visitors? Prisoners? They didn't know. Another sight was the blue stones embedded in the rock, they gave off a faint blue glow and if one was to touch them, warmth. Then at the top of the hill they could see it, the entrance to the upper city. There was no gate, that was long destroyed by time, but there were quite large shades posted as guards. Despite their size they seemed just as curious about the two adventures then the patrols and sentries they passed.

The first thing they were greeted with was a market type scene. Sure the stone buildings looked ancient, and the figures running around were jet-black Cyclopes, but it was movement. Anything was a break from the unending white of the northernlands.

Not only that, but thanks to the city's position in a crevasse of the mountain they were practically completly sheltered from the weather. It was much more liveable here.

They had arrived at last.

19Designated Hero

Athan, for the first time in his relatively short life, was speechless. He had read, through just about every text in existence, about how the ancient cities that had been discovered were so grandiose, but this...this fort, was something else. He parted ways from the guides and Owle for a brief moment to walk towards the nearest building.

A gloved hand came up to press its palm against the stone that made up the outer wall of the structure. His head lowered a moment, then shook feverishly. Maybe it was a block of ice, maybe he was on the verge of death and dreaming of everything. He had to feel the stone to make sure it was real.

His hand left the building to approach his open mouth. Teeth bit down on the index finger of the glove, and with a yank of his head combined with a pull of his arm, his hand was freed.

His cold hand, turned white from the decreased circulation due to the cold temperatures outdoors, came in contact with the surprisingly warm building. His head bowed, a smile came to his face, but he did not speak. Even the annoying old man in his sword was kept silent. Whether or not it was because he was napping, Athan wasn't concerned.

Finally, after a long bout of silence, he turned his head to Owle and smiled even wider. The first time he had done so since Heaven or Hell.

"It's real."

20Owle Isohos

Owle smiled, thanking the shade kindly for the cloak. She was quick to bundle it up around her, adding yet another layer to her many, many articles of clothing.

As they walked through the streets, greeted by the peering eye of one shade sentry or another, Owle would look up and give them a big grin from under her hood, attempting to put them at ease, if they weren't already. It was hard to tell with shades.

She stopped in her tracks, though, observing Athan as he seemed engrossed by the feel of the stone under his chilled fingertips. Eager as she was to get inside, where it was warm, she wasn't about to leave him behind.

And then...his smile. When had she last seen him smile?

Too long ago.

"Of course it's real!" Owle laughed, the sound echoing through the ruined streets, but she wasn't laughing at him. She was laughing for him, because he was happy. It was a sound of simple joy, and no mocking was in its tone. "Now come on, I'm freezing!"

And with that she'd hurry after their escorts, eventually coming across the marketplace, where she simply gaped in awe.

Have you ever seen such activity among the shades? Look at them! They're, they're...living! Like people! Omikron must be happy...

21Joseph Brown

The guides would always give Owle and Athan the time they needed to enjoy the city, even if Athan's removal of his glove worried them slightly.

Really it only helped them as they really didn't know were they should bring the visitors first. What they knew of humans the shades figured they couldn't just plop them in the middle of the city cold and hungry, but their natural paranoia warned them against taking them right to Omikron right away.

The two shades consulted each other, no words were spoken but anyone could tell that something was being communicated. When a decision was made the two shades separated. One went in the direction, while the other motioned for the adventures to follow. If they did they would take a walk through the marvellous architecture of the upper city. The houses were in very good shape, even if they had to be augmented by the shades, and the walls were still standing. The shade guide even took a moment to point out the grand palace at the head of the city.

That wasn't where they were going, not right away at least. Instead they wound their way through what seemed to be a residential district until they came to a particular house. It was quite large, must have been important during the city's heyday. There was one modification to the ancient architecture that was noticeable: A chimney, one that seemed to be in use.

The shade wasted no time in banging on the door, and it would take a few moments before the three could hear the sounds of motion from the inside. The makeshift door swung open to reveal not a shade but a human, for the most part at least. He was a thin timid looking type, with long hair white like an albino, but his eyes were a slate gray disproving that theory.

"Well. This is a surprise." He was used to the few non-shades that had made their home in Syntaxis, but it was always strange to find new faces this far up, "Please come in."

He smiled and stepped aside. Owle and Athan were welcome in this city.

22Designated Hero

Once the astonishment wore off, Athan was left with the task of pulling his glove back on. Not an easy task, but after employing his teeth several more times to secure the thing, he was successful. His fingers flexed inside the material, then relaxed as he went back to join the group.

Deciding it was best to follow the shade that beckoned them, Athan did as instructed. It was not the first time he had been struck with such awe, but it was the first time a city alone achieved that effect. Even though Athan and Owle had their own personal reasons for their reactions, Athan believed that even completely detached individuals would have fostered similar feelings.

The grand palace that was shown to them was just the icing on the cake. Even ruined the structure rivaled most of what Gaia had to offer.

He continued staring at it even as their guide stopped to bang on a door, and if it weren't for Owle standing in the way, he would have probably kept going. Instead, he bumped into her, jumped back, and apologized just when the strange white-haired man opened the door.

"This your friend, Owle?"

He asked as he stepped inside the house. Athan was under the impression that Omikron was a shade much like the tour guide that was showing them around, but for all he knew this strange old man could just as easily be in charge of things.

23Owle Isohos

Owle enjoyed the tour, though she appreciated the architecture somewhat less than Athan. She was still cold, and impatient to see Omikron. Every time they passed another shade on the road, she would crane her neck to look at it as they walked by. Her eyes examined the right arm, looking for the distinctive size of Omikron's...went up to the collar, searching for the scarf...to the eye, looking for the beautiful helmet Omikron had crafted for himself out of his own Dark Matter. She almost missed the Grand Palace when it was pointed out to her, too busy examining the latest passing shade.

She probably made a few of them nervous, which would get her embarrassed once she noticed. After that, she would quickly look away if anyone caught her staring.

Owle stared at the man a minute, a blank look in her light brown eyes. Then her face crinkled in a smile. "Noel!"

She thrust out a hand for him to shake. "Nice to meet you!"

Assuming the hand was taken and shaken, she would then hastily follow Athan inside.

"Ah, well, he's not my friend, persay...but he's Omikron's friend. Flare's met him."

24Joseph Brown

Noel shook the strangers hand with a semi-dazed look.

It was of course even more surpriseing for Noel when the person he was greeting knew his name... Worrisome even, as he did not know them. But things seem to fall into place, first at the mention of Owle, he knew of her in passing from Omikron, and then the mention of Flare who was... Forceful to say the least.

He still didn't recognise the man.

"Owle, I've heard a lot about you." He choked on her name as he was still trying to force his surprise back, "Come in come in, both of you."

He waved them both into a surpriseingly warm house. The heat seemed to come from more of those same crystals embedded into the wall providing the light for the room. And what light they provided, one could clearly see the craftsmanship of two races put into the rooms. Both the ancient and the shade renovations had their charm. One could also see Noel in a more unified light. While his hair was colourless and his eyes suffering the same affliction, he didn't appear to be older than 30. Strange really.

"I was just about to have something to eat before I went to see Omikron." He brought them into a room that was clearly a kitchen and sitting atop a makeshift stove was a large pot. The room was thick with the smell of soup, "I'd me more than happy if you two joined me."

25Designated Hero

"Huh."

Was all Athan could really say to that little revelation. So this strange man wasn't the one who had lead him to Syntaxis, but that only raised a few more questions.

Like what was he supposed to be doing here?

Introductions were lost for the time being, since Athan was busy looking over the house and inspecting just about every nook and cranny there was to be explored. It was strange seeing such a large, armed man taking so much interest in architecture and structure. His hand would run along the wall, overtop the various crystals that heated and lit the room, and then down to the floor.

Athan only entered the kitchen once he realized the two had gone off without him, and the smell of fresh, hot food shook him out of his infatuation with his surroundings. As if his body realized this, his stomach grumbled and sent a sharp pain through his abdomen. His hand instinctively went to cover it.

"Soup, huh? Hope you made a lot, I'm starving."

There would be time for thanks after the meal was complete. If he didn't have some shred of decency left in him he probably would have shoved right past the two that stood in his way and began to help himself. But he abstained from that thought as long as Owle and Noel got a move on.

26Owle Isohos

It was Owle's turn to be shocked. He'd heard of her? From who...?

Of course.

Owle's eyes met the floor, even as a small smile came to her face. Who else here knew of her? So Omikron was still thinking of her...still spoke of her...even with communications between them cut off. It was a beautiful thing to know.

"I'd be glad to," Owle answered his invitation, lifting her eyes to Noel, the smile staying on her features but seeming less burdened. "I haven't had anything warm to eat in days!"

She would move out of Athan's way, settling herself down in the nearest chairlike object. Or on the floor, if there weren't enough chairs.

"How is Omikron?" she inquired, her light brown eyes dancing with concern.

27Joseph Brown

"Don't worry, there's plenty." Noel gathered three large bowls from a cupboard and proceded to ladle as much soup as could into each one. It was mostly a vegtable broth, meat was scarce up here and could only be used for slight flavoring at best. Of course since Noel was one of the few in the city that ate meat, he was usualy the one to have meat.

"Omikron is how he always his." Noel first brought two bowls over to the table for Owle and Athan before doubling back for his own, "Worried about everything, working himself into the ground. Though I'm not sure what today's particular meeting is about."

By the time Noel made it back to the table he finaly would realize how impolite he was being.

"And I'm sorry I haven't introduced myself yet." He looked to Athan, "My name is Noel."

28Designated Hero

"Good deal."

Athan had removed his sword so he could seat himself, and the large weapon was just laying flat on the ground behind him. Not really a hazard to anyone in case it fell over, and with Owle being the closest one to the blade the worst that could happen was that she tripped over it.

The moment the bowl graced the table Athan, forgetting all sorts of table manners, scooped up the thing and dumped the steaming contents into his mouth. He backed off, pulling the bowl away and painfully swallowing what was already in his mouth before gasping for air in order to cool the burning sensation.

It wasn't the ideal meal for him, since Athan just looked the part of a steak and potatoes kind of guy, but anything was better than the dried meats and flavorless bread he had brought along for the trip.

When Noel introduced himself, Athan set the bowl down and stood up again. Apparantly Noel's apology sparked Athan's memory of how helpful strangers should be treated, and how introductions were supposed to work.

"Athan Cole."

And he thrust his hand out across the table for a firm handshake.

29Owle Isohos

Owle had begun shedding clothing. First the cloak, gift from the shade sentry, was draped over the back of the chair. Then the heavy, purple jacket landed on the floor. Next, a few layers of clothing seemed to simply melt away...leaving her still decent, but less bundled than before.

She dug into the soup, and would have been disappointed at the lack of meat if she weren't so thrilled by the warmth of it. It had been ages, and it felt like it was thawing her whole body out...

She frowned a little at the news of Omikron; not that she had expected different, but she'd hoped to hear otherwise. Still, at least he wasn't injured, or sick.

And if this city was any sign, he was making progress, more than she would have dreamed when she met him.

Owle smacked herself on the head.

"Sorry! I'm Owle Isohos, even though you know that already...sorry, but sometimes when Flare meets people it's hard to remember that I haven't..."

Sheepishly, Owle paused in her soup devouring to look apologetically at Noel.

30Joseph Brown

Noel gladly took Athan's hand, and wasn't nearly as frial as he looked.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Cole... Cole." The name seemed to remind Noel of something but was quickly distracted by Owle, "And don't worry Owle, interesting situation I suppose."

Noel then finaly sat down to attend to his own soup. Taking a spoon to it completly normaly took a few mouthfulls. He was hungry too, just not as starving as the other two.

"There is more soup if you're interested, feel free to help yourself." This was mostly directed towards Athan.

He took a few more sips before changing topics.

"If you don't mind me asking," he assumed the most neutral tone possible to hide the fact he really wanted to know, "What exactly are you two doing this far north? Not exactly somewhere you stumble upon."

31Designated Hero

"Yeah, Cole. And nice meetin' you too, Noel."

Athan sat back down after the handshake, eventually taking up a spoon and engaging in a far more civilized manner of eating dinner. He was still shoveling it down pretty quickly, and was all too ready to stand up and help himself to some more the moment the invitation was given.

He timed his return with Noel's next question, but was too busy blowing on the spoonful of soup he was currently lifting to his mouth. After downing it, he set the spoon in the bowl and cast a quick glance towards Owle before continuing.

"I think she came along because she wanted to see Omikron and I, well."

He tried to pick out his words so it didn't sound too confusing, but he really didn't know how to put it.

"Omikron and I have reason to believe that the people who built this city were at least partially my ancestors. Since I've pretty much been looking for a lot of answers over the past few years, this seemed like the best bet."

32Owle Isohos

Owle nodded at Athan's words. "I got a letter from Omikron saying he was up here...I'd been speaking to him by other means, before, but here they don't work. I've been wanting to visit him ever since...so when I found out Athan was going, I thought I'd tag along."

Glancing at Athan, she swallowed a mouthful of soup and chuckled sheepishly. "Though I guess I was more of a pain, than anything."

33Joseph Brown

"Ah, well, I'm sure you shouldn't worry about the journey too much Miss Isohos. You made it, and as I said, I will be visiting Omikron soon as well. I don't see a problem if two guests come along, especially if they are a friend and an invited guest of Omikron. Now, Mr. Cole..."

Noel's eyes were what one would call dull. A plain grey with no sheen, and a permanent tired look to them. But they now seemed as close to lighting up as they could.

"You have stumbled on to the right person if you're interested in Tyr-Kana you've found the right person." he made a one handed gesture towards his heart, "You could call me the chief researcher in this little settlement. Everything that has been discovered has come back to and been catalogued by yours truly."

Modesty wasn't one of Noel's strong points when it came to his research. It was all he had done for the past few, scratch that, many years. His works were all unpublished, but frankly his library of personal notes and books outnumbered what he had collected from other authors. While he would never openly admit it, as he had some decency, he considered himself the expert on anyone of the subjects he was interested in.

All this was further emphasised by how fast he was talking now.

"If you want to look at translations, I've completed a good few chunks of records written in Tyr-Kana Script or the script of The Forgotten. Though a good deal of information is still locked away under what appears to a bizarre hybrid of the two. I figure that's a record of the largely lost period of ti..." He finally took a breath when he heard footsteps down the hall. Cue return to a normal talking speed, "Looks like more visitors, and they come bearing gifts."

The two shades that had guided Athan and Owle into the city had returned. Apparently when the group had separated to lone shade had headed off into the market area in an attempt to create the two bundles it was carrying now. Said bundles, as could be easily seen, contained an assorted mess of clothes. Dry clothes.

34Designated Hero

"Hey, I didn't need to carry you and you didn't nearly get me killed. As far as I'm concerned, you're the best traveling partner I've had so far."

He was quick to shut himself up, however, the moment that Noel turned his attention to him. He was able to set down his spoon as Noel picked up his rate of speech, actually showing a healthy interest in what the older man had to say. Something that he wasn't exhibiting too much prior to that moment.

He did not interrupt the man, but nodded his head following brief pauses in his speech. There was even a small hint of a smile on his face. This little moment of praise for the stranger was cut short by the reemergence of the shades, so with a cursory glance to the newcomers and a brief nod of their presence, he returned his attention to Noel.

"I'd love to look at anything that you've compiled once we've finished our meeting with Omikron. And I'd also appreciate it if you kept me informed of any new discoveries."

35Kalin DNom

Merielle found herself in a wasteland. A teleport to the outer limits and then she had just kept hiking, hoping that the information the demoness had given her was correct. It was better than anything she had at the moment though, if she wanted to find Noel, and find out more about Georg's death. Maybe he could help, maybe not, but it was a start, and it was all Merielle had at the moment.

"Please..." she prayed quietly as she struggled through another pass, the dirt marring her clothing, unlike it had previously. Why was it that a god thought it so important to keep his blessed one's clothes so clean, she would never understand, although she missed it. Wearing all white when going hiking was never a good idea otherwise, but it was all she had besides her blessed weapons and the book.

36Owle Isohos

"Heh," Owle laughed. "Well, that's good to hear, at least. So, guess it wasn't such a bad thing I came?" She seemed in much better spirits, hearing that. He'd been so reluctant to take her, and she'd been trying so hard not to prove his misgivings right...maybe she'd actually shown him she was made of sterner stuff than he thought.

She was also delighted to hear that they'd get to see Omikron, and soon. The big guy always seemed so lost and sad, she figured he needed all the hugs and encouragement he could get.

She listened with mild interest as Noel blathered on about his research...she was curious, but it wasn't the sort of topic that set her brain afire with passion to learn more of it. So she stayed quiet, and finished whatever was left in her bowl of soup.

She glanced up from her eating when the shades arrived, smiling at them. "Oh, you didn't have to," she told the one nearest her with a smile, standing in order to receive the gift. Her clothes did seem to still have the chill from the outside clinging to them, and any gift given her was special, meant to be cherished.

Once the bundle was in her hands, she would carefully unwrap the bundle, going through the assorted clothing with a smile on her face. Choosing an outfit (if there was more than one to choose from), she would turn that smile to Noel and politely inquire if there was someplace she could change.

37Joseph Brown

"You probably should start on the second volume of my journals on the Tyr-Kana, the first is just general information compiled... Though it does correct a few inconsistencies in general texts..." His thoughtful look was quickly interrupted by Owle, "Ah! Clothing, of course. You two must be absolutely soaking. And a place to change, well, hrmn..."

He actually looked around the room at that point. He really hadn't used all the house he was given, plus he had the intellectuals natural lack of common sense.

"Well, how about the two of you find one of the rooms down that hall," He pointed ever so vaguely, "There are a few bedrooms down that way. I can send for some sheets I suppose, better you two stay here rather than anywhere else. At least if you want a hot meal I suppose."

He took a breath after a self indulgent laugh.

"I suppose we should go see Omikron after you get into dry clothes."

On a note, the clothing in the bundle would be simple but nice. Capes, mantles and such would be mainly a grey-white material with a black trim, as they were made by the shades. The rest would be articles of whatever the shades had traded for, they hadn't exactly taken to wearing full outfits yet.

Snow. Snow. Snow.

The blinding whiteness would be about all that Merielle could see. The only reason Athan had found the city was by the help of his grandfather trapped in the sword. It would take nothing short of a miracle or pure dumb luck for Meri to find the city.

She was out there all alone too...

Wait, in the distance just barely obscured by the blowing flakes there seemed to be a human figure. A long brown trench coat, tightly clenching a fedora-like hat of the same hue to his head... Just walking off into to distance.

And then the figure would be gone.

38Designated Hero

Athan hadn't put much thought into his current situation. In fact, even inside the house he was involuntarily shaking every now and then. He hadn't brought nearly as many clothes as Owle had, relying more on his natural thickness than anything to get through the cold weather. But now that Noel had mentioned how wet he was, he finally took notice. Hell, there was still a patch of snow clinging to one of his bangs.

He was a little put off by the sudden end to their conversation, but he put his impatience aside with the knowledge that all his questions would be answered in due time. He had waited this long, a few hours certainly shouldn't matter.

"Sounds like a plan."

And he rose, turning to the shade next to him and accepting the presented offering. He took it with a stiff nod of gratitude before tucking it underneath his arm and heading down the hallway. He'd change out of his soggy clothing, which was a pretty large task considering how difficult wet clothes were to remove with two hands, let alone one.

So he would change, and probably emerge a good time after Owle did. He was wearing the mantle again, trying to keep his little deformity under wraps. If there was one thing he hated, it was admitting that he had limitations, and being minus half an arm was a pretty big limitation.

"So, where's the big guy at, anyway?"

Athan would pipe up again as soon as he had scooped Gramps up off the floor.

39Owle Isohos

The problem with Owle was, even though she had brought a lot of clothing, she was wearing all of it. And I mean all of it. Living in Gambino, most of her clothing was made for warmer climes...she had to wear it in layers to get even a prayer of warmth out of it. So Owle was currently wearing every single article of clothing she owned, and most of it was soaked through.

She nodded gratefully to Noel, and meandered off in the direction he'd pointed. "Thank you! I don't need any sheets, really...I can fall asleep anywhere, as long as there's room to curl up."

She felt embarrassed that this man, and the shades, were doing so much for her. Owle was used to having to get everything for herself. She hadn't been spoiled like this since...

...since I first came to the Firebrand.

The thought put a smile on her face, and, reliving happy memories, she found the nearest door, stepped through, and closed it behind her. Stripping off her wet clothes, she hung them on every available surface in the room in the hopes that they'd somehow dry.

With that, she summoned a dry pair of underthings (which she hadn't been wearing layered under one another because that would have just felt awkward) onto her form, and proceeded to pull on the shade clothing, no matter how uncoordinated it might be.

It took her a while to come out; Owle hadn't needed to actually put on a shirt and pants in the longest time. Her body hadn't quite forgotten the motions, but the experience was a weird one...and slow.

Still probably faster than a one armed man though. And she had the thought of seeing Omikron to spur her on.

Once she was done, she emerged from the room and proceeded to wait impatiently for Athan to finish up. Was it really so hard to put on clothing?

When he finally emerged, she fell into step behind him, her anticipatory grin silently echoing his question to Noel.

40Joseph Brown

"Omikron has set up the cities base of operations in the Tyr-Kana palace," Noel didn't seem to noice they had returned until Athan spoke up, "The paths to it from the market are mainly colapsed, but luckly its only a short walk from here."

Noel himself had cleaned up the dishes, as well as getting his own outdoor wear on. Nothing too fancy, what apeared to be a black jacket and a shade mantle-cape combination. It really looked like all the warmpth came from the cape, and the coat was just something he liked. That wouldn't be too far off.

"Anyway, we should be off." And with that, he began to exit.

41Kalin DNom

Joy, so she blended in with the snow, even if she was a bit dirtier than she had been before. But she was also a hunter, she had spent the last five years hunting down godless sacks of trash who had done evil in the eyes of the church, and more even more Ysamine had died. That had been their job.

So the flicker of something that didn't quite belong to the landscape would catch her eyes long enough for her to begin following after it, even though she was freezing. One winter jacket, made for the fairly mild winters of barton and durem wouldn't help much. Eventually, she'd have to resort to mage firet to keep warm, but for now, she'd follow the shape. If it was an animal, she only hoped it wouldn't attack. At least she was upwind of it, so it wouldn't be too hard to hide from it.

42Designated Hero

Athan was careful when he shouldered his sword, making sure he didn't accidently decapitate anyone or smash a wall as he did so. He still held tight to the sword, so he didn't really have a free hand to do anything, but it wasn't like he was going to need it for anything for quite some time.

"Excited, Owle?"

He didn't need to look at her for too long to catch the grin plastered on her face. It even made him smile just a little bit.

"Or did somebody just fart?"

A little joke, and he was off to follow Noel out the door. No point in making the poor girl wait any longer than she had to.

43Owle Isohos

Owle nodded to Athan's question, then grimaced at his joking follow up. "I haven't seen Omikron in a long time..." she whined...then realized that Athan, halfway out the door, probably hadn't heard her. She hastened after him and Noel, glancing left and right at the shade city as they went through it, particularly entranced by any of the busier areas.

She had known Omikron was trying to gather the freed shades to him...but it had never occurred to her how many there would actually be! Somehow, she had been picturing only handfuls, instead of the hundreds that were surely here in the city.

44Joseph Brown

Noel led the two through the city and into the grand palace. They were in what appeared to be a huge vaulted room that seemed to go on for much longer than it was practical to have. It was made to impress, not to be useful.

That being said, the shades had found a use for it.

Some of the shades in this room were of a difrent sort. They all looked as if they were wearing light to heavy armour rather than the smooth bodied variety in most of the city. They were involved in all sorts of battle related activites, sparing or insructing lesser shades. The style was more remanicent of the shades that fought in the Vale but had clearly improved, as they had been very careful to strip away the brutality of the fighting style they had been created to use.

Noel would continue right down the centre of this room, and then find his way to a set of stairs. He seemed to absently wander though halls, rarely checking if he still had his visitors in tow. Until they finaly came to a closed door that is, he turned around to make sure his guests were paying atention for this part.

"This is it." Was all he said as he oppened the door.

And it was, he revealed a war room of sorts. A large stone table was strewn with parchments, maps, notes and books. Things were pinned to the walls and there were three figures enamored with them. The first was a shade that seemed for all intents and purposes female, a strange history behind that one but one that made a good ally. The next was a rather large, well mussled and seeming beat to all hell man. His arm was in a sling, he was bandaged all over, one of his eyes was swolen, and yet he still looked more concerned with his papers.

And finaly unlike the other two sitting at the table, the was the armored figure with his back turned examining a large map on the wall. He wore a scarf...

The figure would continue on for quite a bit, though you really couldn't tell the diference between anything in this blinding white. What was strange was when the figure stopped moving, it didn't give any hints that it noticed Meri, it just stopped.

If she so chose she would only be able to get so close to the figure. Close enough to see that the figure was clearly a man in a coat, but the moment she got that close there would be a shudder of magic.

Suddenly Meri would be standing in the same spot, only the grass would be green and the skys would be clear. She would be able see the tundra and blizzard in the distance, but it wasn't where she was. It was like she was standing in a bubble of good weather. Strange enough the figure was gone.

What was going on?

45Designated Hero

Just as he had acted during their initial entrance to the city, Athan was all paying obsessive attention to just about every nook and cranny of the new regions of the city, and even moreso once they crossed into the grand palace. It wasn't much to look at compared to what it must have been centuries ago, but Athan was still amazed by the size of the entire thing.

It also brought about the realization that, no matter how grandiose or powerful his ancestors were, their society had long since been swallowed whole by the annals of time. It was perhaps best that Athan had went into the adventure with little more than a fool's optimism for discovering a living, breathing Tyr-Kana. Still, there was a brief shadow of disappointment before he went back to his normal routine of stopping at ten foot intervals, staring at an object of interest, inspecting it, and lastly turning to run back to the others.

It was probably a good thing Noel had continue on without waiting for him, or the trip would have taken much longer than intended. When Athan caught back up to Owle and Noel the doors were thrown open, leaving the swordsman to gaze upon the shades and beaten up man within.

Never being much for formalities, Athan stepped into the room and just looked around while letting out a low whistle.

"So..."

He would have clapped his hands together, and in fact, made the motion to, but hit nothing but air as his left hand swept right past where his right arm ended. He quickly corrected that error and dropped his hand back to his side, as if nothing had happened.

"Whatcha lookin' at?"

46Kalin DNom

"Oh blessed ---" She cut off, she couldn't really curse the Light, since she still believed in it. Falis was still off limits despite her status. And she didn't really believe in Hell. She looked around her, and wished she hadn't tried to get closer to the man when he'd stopped. She also didn't know whether this was a hostile environment or not. And because of it, was a bit frustrated.

"Damned it all to the VOID!" She cursed out loud with the only thing left to curse as her hands fiddled with her daggers.

47Owle Isohos

Owle was right behind Noel all the way, barely sparing some curious glances at the city. She seemed to bounce on her feet, despite her weariness, and came dangerously close to stepping on Noel's heels. In fact, her entire demeanor was that of a hyperactive child going Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Aren't we there YET?

The sparring shades did catch her eye, though, enough so that she actually slowed her pace enough to watch them as she passed them by. And then...

"This is it."

Owle rushed through the door, barely thinking about what she might be interrupting. A shade! - no, wait, it had boobs. Not Omikron. A man! - no, he wasn't all black and seemed to have two eyes. Also not Omikron. A scarf!

Owle rushed forward, her arms open wide, just barely stopping herself from hugging the big guy from behind. After all, this was a meeting, and some formality had to be observed...it would be rude to hug him before he turned around.

"Omikron!" she greeted cheerfully.

48Joseph Brown

Some people just knew when not to say anything, and for Noel and the other two this was one of those times. It wasn't for Athan, but that's besides the point. Anyway, the three just watched, Noel and the other man a bit more softly than the shade. Athan was ignored for now.

Omikron jumped a little when he heard a voice. He was on edge and used to long periods of silence. Alone, undisturbed and away from the rest of the world, the way he'd like to like it. It had been different lately, it had felt like hiding rather than keeping everyone else safe. He felt once again like he was putting everyone in danger.

Then there was a voice. Things were a tad more clear.

"Owle?" It was as close to emoting that anyone in that room had heard Omicron speak. He turned around as quickly as he could, despite the clumsiness his bulk would cause. Because of that he was scant inches from bumping into Owle by the time he spun around, and looked for the source of the voice. Considering how close he was and the difference in heights he eventually had to turn his one yellow eye downwards to look at the woman.

He attempted to retain that hollow regal Omikron-esque composure, "... Hello Owle."

"Hey!" There was a voice from behind Meri which would be startling enough considering where she was, "It's not safe out here."

If she turned to face the voice she would be greeted by two figures, close enough to be clearly seen. They were both male, and they both had the look that they had been walking just as long as Meri had been. The one that was speaking seemed to be ripped from a painting. Tall enough to be prominent but not so tall he seemed freakish. Toned in just the right way that he appeared to be a strongman when he wanted to be, and not like he was permanently shrouded in a lumpy meat blanket. Striking features framed by dark dark hair. The other fellow seemed more plain only by comparison, as his friend made all his flaws more prominent. His features were not striking, in fact his eyes were rather squinty, and it was obvious he had to cut off his muddy muddy red hair with a blade otherwise it would take over his face. He was a bit too tall, a tad too lanky, and not quite up to snuff to his near fabio friend.

That wasn't the strange thing though. The strange thing was their clothing, as it looked downright primitive. A mess of leather straps and crude plates of either softer metals or hardened leather. Nor did they seem to be carrying weapons, strange considering what this fellow just shouted.

"It is dangerous everywhere." The other shrugged and shook his head as he made this matter of fact statement.

49Kalin DNom

Of course, she would turn, but strangely enough she wasn't so immature as to draw her weapons just yet. If they'd wanted to kill her, it would have been simple enough without shouting at her. Instead, her green eyes just peered at them, as if they were some time struck anomaly.

"I happen to agree with your friend.", nodding towards the second man. Her hair billowed in the soft wind, but she no longer considered herself attractive, what with the one long scar going down the right side of her face, so she didn't put much stock in other's appearances either.

"However, I think I'm a bit better equipped to deal with it than you two look." She tried smiling, her 'healer's smile' as she Ysamin liked to call it that she put on anytime she didn't want anyone to know how dangerous she was.

50Owle Isohos

That composure wasn't about to last long, since Owle promptly glomped him about his middle, which was exactly where she could reach. "I'm so glad to see you! I tried to get a letter sent out, and I'm sorry I'm interrupting your meeting but..."

She buried her head into his chest, catlike, squeezing him tightly for a moment despite the discomfort caused by his armor. Then she stepped back, smiled sheepishly at the others in the room, and turned back to Omikron.

"Hello."

51Designated Hero

Being ignored wasn't something a guy like Athan was used to. Carting a sword like his around in public tended to draw a lot of attention, not to mention the Heaven or Hell tournament had skyrocketed his popularity despite his two consecutive losses at the end of the tournament. But since none of the two assembled aside from Omikron made a move, and Athan was left to stand there in a rather awkward position, he fell silent for once and just watched Owle's reunion with her long time friend.

Or lover.

He really didn't know.

52Joseph Brown

Omikron, as always, was caught by surprise with Owle's sudden bursts of affection. He had long since convinced himself that he existed to make up for past deeds not to be liked, let alone be held. His arms hovered just a bit away from his sides as he decided if he should do nothing or push Owle away before she hurt herself. He did neither. Instead he laid both hands on her shoulders, and kept them there even as she backed up.

"Owle," there was that ever present note of concern to his voice, "It has become far too dangerous, why did you come this far north. You do not know what your getting involved in, I do not want to..."

He had been looking at her the whole time, but the last bit of his spiel he could barely stand to admit he had somehow lured her into danger again. So when he looked away he noticed Athan.

"Athan..." He seemed even more hollow now, "That package... No, not now. I did not want to bring you into this either. The timing is just not in our favour..."

It was about this time Omikron said a word in some language neither Owle or Athan could understand, but even with Omikron's lack of emoting somehow you could tell it was a curse of some sort. As he said that he broke away from Owle, his large gauntlet hand going to his forehead as if he had some sort of headache.

"Phi... Continue gathering the intelligence. We need to know what we can..." Omikron did the only thing he knew to get his mind off the situation, "Noel continue the translation effort, we need that as fast as possible."

Phi, the other shade, shook her head but was gone almost as soon as Omikron finished his orders. Noel being a social recluse was happy to be excused, but still backed out slowly partially because he wanted to have more tact than Phi and partially because he was curious. Omikron couldn't even look at anyone in the room.

"Athan," It wasn't Omikron speaking but rather the injured looking man. Despite his injuries and the fact it was obviously paining him as he struggled to his feat, he still had one of those voices that could calm a person in their strength, "I can show you a few of the more interesting parts of the Tyr'Kana city if you are still interested. I'm almost positive I could bore you less than Noel."

He smiled through a swollen lip, this seemed to cue Omikron to look towards the man still. Worried look still heavy in his eye.

"You have done too much today already, you need to res..."

"Talk to Owle Omikron," whoever this injured man was he was able to get Omikron to be silent without even raising his voice. From the sounds of it he could do that to anyone, "I'll take care of Athan."

With that Omikron once again buried his eye in both hands, and the man limped his way towards Athan.

--- Tundra --- --- --- --- ---

"Hah." The hansome fellow seemed to puff up that, "Trust me, we are amongst the most prepared people on Gaia."

"So sayeth the great hero Almagest." The other fellow rolled his eyes as he droned the words, "We may have a sligthly better chance against the shadows than the others, but we're just two drops in the ocean compared to one."

"Oh now come on, you are starting to sound like the rest of them. We have power now Aerii, affter all this time... And now we are bickering in front of a stranger, what if the shadows came? Divided we fall and all that."

"We're marching to our deaths, martyrdom can't come soon enough." He said this with a smile, most could guess this was how these two "worked".

The dark haired man shook his head and turned to Merielle.

"Ignore my friend, he's useful to have around when the shadows attack and the spirits seem to like him, but other than that hes a real pain." The man refered to as Aerii groaned in the background, "Now, what are you doing this far from civilization. Surely those retreating from the homeland have not gotten this far yet?"

"We have been gone a long time Almagest."

53Kalin DNom

Merielle fingered the long scar down her face as she watched the bickering between the two. It was far too reminiscent of the bickering between herself and Ysamine as to make the woman wince in pain. There was affection, true. She had to focus on that.

Her hand swept back to her daggers as she thought of how to phrase her next question. "You mention shadows..." She thought about the entries in Georg's book that had mentioned that. "Shadows...shades. Falician clerics used the different words to mean the same things. So perhaps this did as well.

"I am looking for an acquaintance of my old tutor." The little white fib slipping from her lips with ease that would have shocked her just five short years ago. But a lot had changed since then. She had changed since then. Not everything was black and white. Noel may or may not have known of Georg, but Georg knew of him. Therefore, an acquaintance of her...and while Georg may not have tutored her much directly, she'd still learned a lot from him, hence the tutor.

"He apparently is a bit of a recluse." Which would explain her little expedition out into the tundra.

54Designated Hero

"Timing? What is it? If it involves cracking skulls I wouldn't be too worried, I'll help you guys out if you need it."

That didn't matter, since the wounded man spoke up and diverted Athan's attention away from Omikron. Athan wasn't quite so sure what was holding the man up, considering how wounded he was. Although, given certain circumstances, Athan would be forced to ask himself that same question.

"You need any help?"

Depending on if the man agreed to the help or not, Athan would either duck down to offer a shoulder or stay where he was. Who was he to stomp on another person's pride if they considered themselves well enough to walk?

"If you can, show me everything."

55Owle Isohos

Owle just looked up at Omikron as he counseled her about the dangers of this place. The smile never left her face.

She stayed quiet while he dismissed the others, though she couldn't help but squirm a little at how all of a sudden everyone felt the need to vacate the room. That was her fault, wasn't it? Gods, she was really dumb, coming in and hugging him during a business meeting...but Omikron was one of those people who needed all the hugs he could get, whenever he could get them. This Owle firmly believed.

"I'm sorry..." Owle began, uncertainly reaching a hand out to Omikron. She wanted to place it on his shoulder, but that was much too high. "I didn't mean to chase everyone away..."

She laid the hand on his arm, comfortingly.

Then Owle thought for a moment, trying to remember what he had asked her before. "I came because I wanted to see you. You know me...if I'd known there was danger here, I'd just have come running quicker. Besides, I had Athan with me, so I was even safer than usual. And...

"Well, trouble usually finds me if I don't find it first." She shrugged, as if it were no big deal. It wasn't. "So it's not out of the ordinary. I'm used to it."

56Joseph Brown

"I'm fine." The obviously not fine man answered calmly, "I've earned every one of these aches, and there's something about this place that draws people to martyrdom."

The injured man shot a glance at Omikron and smiled.

"This way Athan, I only arrived recently myself but I know where to go."

Unless Athan or Owle had anything pressing to say the two would exit the room. Omikron would just watch, he was thinking about how people kept seeming to find there way here. After he had went through so much trouble to quarantine himself and the shades. They could have been happy... Undisturbed. Though that wouldn't help at all now, not at all.

"I do not think I could ever hope to keep trouble from you." He looked down to look at the hand she had placed on him, "You have so many to protect you though. I have not been one of those Owle. When I have been there I have only brought more trouble upon you, and when I should have protected you I have ran."

His one eye closed and his head shook, but his other hand went to rest upon hers.

"And somehow you wanted to come see that, and all you get in return is put in danger." Eye opened to look right at the woman, "Owle, I fear it may be stirring again... Moving at a rate I have never imagined."

His hand on hers went limp, as did his head. He stood there hands by his side and head hung low.

"I..."

--- Syntaxis --- --- --- ---

"Athan, I want to tell you that this is not the first time Shades have inhabited Syntaxis." The injured man began to speak, "But I also want you to understand that those shades were not associated with the Omikron we know. They were under the power of The Forgotten One, a being of such unbelievable power and malice that the entire world joined together to seal it away."

The two had been walking through the city towards the eastern section, a place known as the mana gardens. They took a different path than Noel had taken, thus there was much more for Athan to look at. Not that he had a good deal of time to look, as the injured man seemed to have no problem getting around at a fair speed.

"The two races are integrally linked because of what The Forgotten did, as it duped some to fight with and and turned them on others. From extended battle on one side, and close contact on the other the Tyr'Kana became the unparalleled expert in shades."

"And that's why I emphasise that Omikron's Shades are not the ones that you will learn about. They are free from such bonds, and everything you learn about yourself they will be right with you learning about themselves."

"Now, is there anything in particular you're seeking?"

--- Tundra? --- --- --- ---

"I've heard them called a good deal of things." The man called Aerii responded, "Shades, shadows, creatures. All I really know is they're of a darkness, no a nothingness, not of this world. Nothing like the spiritual darkness."

"And as far as we knew it's just them and animals up this far. Civilisations far far away from here, so I'd say more than a little bit of a recluse." The other man, Almagest, began to look rather pensive, "I've pretty much lost all track of time, but it took us at least a year to get to around here from home."

"Probably more, and that's barely counting attacks from the..." Before finishing his sentence he let out a large sigh, "Speak of the devil, here they are Almagest."

The "hero" barrelled forward, a large arm shooting out to push Meri back a few steps. Sure enough there was a marauding group of some strange creatures. They looked like nothing more than blackish blurs moving across the planes, but the world seemed to die around them. Almagest held his hands like he was holding a weapon, and there was a strange focus around him. Something like if he was extending himself into his hands. It would be vaguely familiar, perhaps that kid who was in the temple with the demon...

What was more impressive was the man known as Aerii, as he was obviously channelling magic forces. What was strange, as anyone who were even minorly magically adept could tell, was that he was casting in no way like modern or even ancient forms of magic. No it was like he was calling upon all the forces, the spirits of the elements as well the powers of the light and dark, all at one time. They all were drawn to him, it was some form of prime magic grounded in unity rather than the opposition known today.

And thus that same energy pulsed from Aerii into Almagest's hands, and in the blink of an eye there was a sword where there previously was no sword. The world had created his weapon.

And then a secondary flash, one so bright that Meri once again was blinded.

With that she was back in the snow covered tundra... Though there seemed to be ruins before her.

57Kalin DNom

She'd been about to give 'hero' the rough side of her tongue as he shoved her, only to instead watch...fascinated by the 'show' she was given, her own fingers reaching down and twitching in familiarity, not from memories of that one kid's items, but instead of her own repressed memories.

As Meri's vision cleared from the nice sparkles, she found tears in her eyes. She would not dwell on things that could not change. Instead, she allowed herself but a moment to dry her eyes and then look around.

Ruins...

She glanced down at the pack containing the book, and wondered just how convenient Fate liked to make things.

"Hello?" Despite her 'armored' and weaponed state, hopefully, she wouldn't be seen as a threat.

58Designated Hero

Athan shrugged his shoulders, gave a little wave to Owle, whether or not she was paying attention, and then turned to follow the injured man out of the room. His curiosity was sated for the time being, although he didn't have as much time as he would have liked to look over the various ruins and buildings, he was happy to get a passing glance and a vague idea of what it was used for.

"All I know about this city is what I've read in what very few books exist. None of them mentioned this Forgotten One guy, and they never told of what happened to the Tyr'Kana."

A brief pause, as Athan turned to look at a nearby building just prior to their entry into the mana gardens.

"So I guess what I want to know most is, what really happened to make them disappear? Did it have something to do with the shades? A plague? What happened to them and why am I still here to prove that some of their kind survived?"

59Owle Isohos

Owle wasn't paying attention, her eyes catching Athan only for a moment as he wandered out the door. Her focus was on Omikron.

"What are you talking about?" she asked, when she was done speaking. His mention of the taint stirring once more was enough to chill her, but first things first. "Omikron...you have never failed to protect me. Nor have you ever brought trouble down on me that I didn't walk into open-eyed and willing. And...

"You make being put in danger sound like such a bad thing!" she exclaimed at last, smiling a devilish smile. "Hell, I seek it out if it doesn't happen to me often enough. It's an added bonus on top of coming to see you!"

She was only half joking. She didn't like risking her life...she didn't like believing she was going to die. But she loved the thrill, the feeling of having done something no one else would ever do. "So."

She didn't remove her hand. If anything, she moved closer. "Tell me what's happening? The Forgotten is rising again?"

60Joseph Brown

"I... I could have went in person to the tournament, I could have wished you luck there." Hollow still as he couldn't even conjure a sigh, "Instead a letter explaining why I disappeared without saying a word."

"There are plenty of things I could have done." He looked to the map he had been pouring over for the past god knows how long, "In retrospect, I suppose I could not have kept you from danger. I could have confronted it with you."

Silence.

"Yes. I believe it has. I can feel the pull."

--- City --- --- --- ---

"The Tyr'Kana had what most would consider a utopian society. Leaning towards militaristic, thus the warriors had supremacy in politics and all that." The man continued to hobble along leading the two back through the market area, "The scholars were still amongst the most educated on the planet. They knew of all magic, the old gods, and even of what we call The Forgotten one. Their inquiry into that was their downfall."

The two crossed through another gate and then something strangely wonderful happened, it was very very warm. Athan was now surrounded by greenery laced with stone walkways. It was a beautiful scene, and one that seemed impossible as far north as they were. Trees in full health, flowers in bloom, vines draping over the walkways. Perhaps the floating crystalline substances on the horizon in either direction were the reason... But they were headed towards what looked to be a temple type building.

"The Forgotten preys on weakness, once it discovered that the mystics weren't getting the same respect of the warriors it began to twist their minds. Make them believe their near perfect society was not good enough, and that they should rebel until they get the respect they deserve." The man was mostly looking ahead occasionally looking at the plants or the ground whenever he stumbled, "Thus one half of the race bolstered by their might and the other assisted by the chaotic power of the Forgotten began a civil war."

"A bloody battle that came to its climax in this city." They were on the steps of that temple looking place now, "When another group joined the faltering warriors."

--- Lower Ruins --- --- --- ---

There would be no answer, verbally at least. What Meri could see couldn't speak, they could only act.

From the darkness emerged a group of three yellow-eyed shades, lightly armoured and not carrying any weapons. They were obviously moving cautiously, as more than likely they would be more worried about Meri than she would be about them. They edged closer, hoping that whoever this was wasn't hostile and tried to remain as non threatening as they could.

Hoping it would be seen as a sign of peace the lead shade raised both hands in the air and opened them to show it had no weapon drawn.

61Kalin DNom

Meri smiled, even as she lifted her own hands away from her weapons. Despite what she had seen only moments before, she still had the confidence in her skills that she could get to her weapons if something happened. Perhaps it would be over confidence, but Merielle had learned nothing if not to give people a chance.

Her green eyes remained calm as she took a step forward, her own hands mimicking the lead shade. They matched the description, and she was willing to trust Georg's book more than something that may or may not have been illusion. If these were shades, then perhaps she could find Noel.

"I'm not here to fight. I am but in search of someone." She didn't know they couldn't speak of course. But hopefully they could hear.

62Designated Hero

Athan's attention had been wavering from the cityscape the more that his new guide spoke. In fact, by the time they had begun ascending the temple stairs, Athan's eyes had stopped their pointless wandering and instead he focused on his compatriots words.

It had been a lot to take in given the circumstances and his fascination with the surrounding area, but he had understood the gist of it all. A rift in the Tyr'Kanan society lead to a civil war between the warriors and the scholars. Somehow, The Forgotten One was tied into all of that, and since Athan had no inherent knowledge of that sinister force, it took him a little while to chew over that particular piece of information. Then came the war itself, and Athan turned to look back over the ruined city from the temple steps. Initially he had considered the crumbled walls and buildings to be a testament to the destructive power of time. Now it was obvious that some, if not all of the destruction that left the city in ruins was a cost of the war.

"When another group joined the faltering warriors."

Athan turned back to the wounded man.

"Who?"

63Owle Isohos

"And abandon the people who need you here?" Owle asked indignantly, giving a sweeping gesture to the room. "Omikron, before you came along, everyone I saw here...everyone trying to live a free and peaceful existence, were puppets to the Forgotten. Without you, they'd still be there. Yes, you could have stayed beside me every moment of every day and tried to protect me...but then the hundreds..." She paused, in question. "Thousands? ...of shades here wouldn't have any hope at all."

"I...understand, that these people need you more than I do. Just like there are people who need me in the Firebrand. It's like you said...I have plenty of people to protect me. But the people here...who do they have to protect them, if not you?"

Silence. She waited.

"Yes. I believe it has. I can feel the pull."

"...wonderful," Owle muttered sarcastically. "Anything...more specific than that? Or you just know that its coming back?"

A curious glance was thrown at the map, but she didn't ask.

64Joseph Brown

"It is a launch of a sleeper plot." Omikron noticed Owle's interest in the map and walked over to it himself, "Hundreds of years in the making, taking advantage of the fact noone is supposed to remember the forgotten. It turned horrible deeds into mythos, gathered a cult following. A false church of something called the Saint Matriarch."

He pointed to the map, particularly his jet black finger went to the large circle in Barton. Then he dragged it across to a network of other smaller dots.

"The man, the injured one, is the lone survivor of Alpha's emergence from the central chapel. He would be dead if it was not for a twist of fate where Alpha's destructive teleport spell brought him here. We're nursed him back to health, but he's incapable of being healed magically. He also refuses to say his name, as he claims he is not worthy of it anymore."

"None the less he brought warnings of the Forgotten, and its cult of human followers from all these locations across Gaia." What sounded like a sigh came from the figure, "Shades and humans led by Alpha could be devastating, as he is the most dangerous shadelord."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

"The Forgotten is a dangerous entity Athan, it contains within itself the potential of the universes natural end, the bringing of nothingness. But it has been corrupted by its own hate and malice, yes, it would use that natural power to bring a unnatural end to everything. Thus it had to be sealed away for eternity. This is what I learned from Omikron." The two crossed into the darkness of the temple like building, "But I have taught things and had things confirmed by these ruins."

They exited the dark hallway into a room lit by the dim blue glow of a giant floating crystal floating in the centre of the temple. Under it was a great pool of Forgotten Matter, the being of shades. All across the room it pooled into vats, poured through channels and fell down in black waterfalls. There were also shades, many of them wearing smocks and heavy leather aprons, doing various things within the vats. Combining it with various metals, casting spells upon the matter, or even simply forming it with their thought.

"The Forgotten's only way out of it's imprisonment is to trick mortal and immortal beings into weakening the seal. To combat this some unknown force granted a select few mortals the power to combat the Forgotten, and the grace to live outside of time so they could do this through the ages. This group was known as Anima." The were now in front of what appeared to be a giant mosaic of great battle, "Something happened to Anima after the battle of Syntaxis, as there is no record of them after this."

The man hobbled over to a section below the mosaic where text was engraved into the rock wall, right there he unceremoniously fell to his knees to read it.

"Athan, why this interests you is I believe it is in your blood..." He pointed to a section that talked of the warriors of the battle, "Anima that is. This name isn't listed among the dead like many of the others associated with Anima."

That name, as the man in Athan's head would probably translate, was Atan Keil.

--- Lower Ruins --- --- --- ---

The shades seemed to consult each other for a second and decided on the best course of action. She did not seem hostile, and she just wanted to find someone... But how could they know she didn't really want to hurt them?

One brave shade believed he knew how, it was the same shade that greeted Athan.

It stepped forward and looked her right in the eyes. With a sense of drama it thrust one hand out and waited. If Meri understood the gesture and clasped that hand in hers, the shade would grab her hand with its other and vigourously shake it with both hands... Ok, it didn't fully understand the gesture itself.

If all that went to plan it would break away and swoop its arm in an overhand "follow me" motion.

65Kalin DNom

Meri looked at the shade's outstretched hand for a moment, and then couldn't resist a smile. Universal sign of non hostility. If you were shaking someone's hand with your sword hand, then you couldn't harm them. So Merielle had nothing to lose, after all, she was ambidextrous. So she reached her own hand out to grasp 'his' in a firm handshake.

...And then had her brains rattled by the jostling of it's follow-up. One hand went to her head as 'he' broke away, but at least it hadn't been a sword to the gut. So when it motioned to follow, she did so. She smiled, thinking of what Georg would say about her naiveté in trusting.

'It's either going to kill you or make you a lot of friends. If you can survive being killed, you're set.'

"I'm Merielle Devius. Do you have a name?" She spoke to the silent but brave shade who was leading the way. She wasn't sure if he was silent on purpose, but Meri found herself both curious about the shades as well as hopeful. She hoped that Georg's hope for these creatures had base.

66Designated Hero

Athan was right up behind his injured tour guide the moment he pointed out a section of the wall. He was leaning forward, looking at it, but not having much success reading the strange text.

That part was handled by the old man, or what was left of him, on his back.

"Was always your father's favorite story as a kid."

Wait, so you knew about this?

"Kind of. You know how things change over time. Hell, the story I told your father involved that man slaying a ten armed monster."

Anything else you'd like to tell me?

"Nope."

"Atan Keil..."

Athan narrowed his eyes and stepped back away from the mosaic, running a gloved hand through the length of his hair.

"So he was one of these...Anima guys then? But I thought he was with the Tyr'Kana."

A brief pause before he'd keep going.

"Does this mean that Syntaxis won the battle? That Atan's still alive, just...outside of time?"

67Owle Isohos

"The Saint Matriarch?!" Owle exclaimed, recognizing the name. She had been there, she had seen those people...they were all dead?

"I went there once, to, well, heckle. I tend to get into religious debates sometimes, just...cause."

She looked at the map, and all the many dots on it signifying the Forgotten's rise. Then she glanced back to Omikron. "So we have to warn them. Warn these people, tell them what the Forgotten really is...I mean, they won't believe us, cause they're probably fanatics, but enough people remember the Grand Battle of Barton and if we show them the shades..."

Hopefully she looked up at him, wanting him to like her idea, wanting to believe it was possible to stop this.

68Joseph Brown

"Barton would be easily duped by the shades. Flare will tell you the same thing, only the most involved knew the true purpose of the shades... But they never actually attacked Barton, only the secondary camp of the town's enemies."

"They're fanatics Owle, they tried to kill anyone who didn't surrender their will completely. They either become shades at the hands of a new cult, or keep their lives and loose their will anyway." He dragged his finger from one marker to another on the map, "Though there always is some, that man saved many people Alpha tried to have slaughtered."

His attention went from the map to Owle. It was impossible to snuff her spirit, perhaps that's why he always wanted her around. She made Omikron feel like there was a chance. That somehow they could overcome the bleakness he knew all too well and triumph. Everything would be ok.

"He still feels the weight of his mistakes, and despite his good deed against Alpha he still feels unworthy of a name. I think he should realise the good he's done... And... Well just say it." For the first time in a long time Omikron let out a sigh, a sign of emotion, but a good-natured sigh overall, "He sounds like me."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

"Pay attention Athan, I said Syntaxis was the last appearance of Anima proper, and there were clearly other incidents of the Forgotten. One in our lifetime even." The man's voice was still calm and soft, yet it had that quiet sternness made you weary of saying anything wrong, "It's unlikely Atan carried on the practice of Anima, either gave it up or was ripped away from it. Thus he couldn't remain outside of time, he had to continue his legacy the normal way."

"Which brings me to my point Athan." The man looked to Athan and his very gaze had weight, "I believe some force is attempting to gather the remnants of Anima, make people aware of the past, prepare of for something. Well, a very specific something. It."

At that moment the wounded fellow pointed to the centrepiece of the wall, a swirling black void with a single eye carved in the centre."

--- Lower City --- --- --- ---

The shades would lead her through the ruins of the lower city until the path was lit by the blue glow of strange stones embedded into the walls of the city. Every now and then the creatures would encounter more of the same creatures, make a few nods and gestures and moved on.

Do you have a name?

Now that was a question shades weren't asked often, nor did they ever really think about. Without hesitation the shade just shook its head. At the same time the shade was curious about what the woman was looking for. Of course questions were always harder to ask when only one of them could speak.

Thus it settled for vague questions.

It tapped Meri to ensure it had her attention and then began the gesturing. First it pointed to her, secondly it held a hand above it's one eye as if it was looking out into the distance, then a shrug, and finally a rolling "continue on" motion with its hands.

69Designated Hero

It was hard for Athan to grasp all of the information at once, so it was probably a good thing that he asked a silly question so he could have a brief refresher to help him absorb all of it. He even dropped down to a knee to get a better look at the various markings, as well as come down to eye level with his guide and newfound mentor.

The knowledge that The Forgotten was still alive didn't seem to sit well with Athan. Given that, with the knowledge he had just received, this previously unknown force of destruction was responsible for the civil war that ended his ancestors.

Then there was a gesture courtesy of the stranger that turned his attention to the center of the wall. While he didn't exactly know what the swirling darkness and single eye meant, he could fathom a guess as to what it symbolized.

"So."

Athan stood up, closing his hand into a fist.

"How do we put this thing down?"

70Kalin DNom

Merielle's eyes widen with the realization that the shade could not, in fact, speak and nodded. But it could at least hear. She focused, refusing to dwell on the sadness of something that was obviously of some intelligence, and not having a name to call itself. "If you don't mind, may I call you..."She paused for a moment. "Valiant...since you were so brace coming to me unarmed? Just so I have a name to put to you." She'd wait for a confirmation of a yes or a no before answering 'Valiant's unspoken question.

"I'm looking for a Noel Chistatio. I was told that I could possibly find him here by a Flare Sithfallen. He is known to my mentor; Georg Leonid." When in doubt, spout as many names as you could remember...well, unless in hostile territory, but Merielle didn't feel in danger.

71Owle Isohos

"That he does!" Owle exclaimed, laughing. She huggled Omikron, giving him just a quick cuddle before withdrawing. She somehow felt he needed the comfort, the reassurance that came from a person's touch. The very reaction he gave her, like he was unused to such things, told her all the more that he needed it, badly.

At least Omikron realized he was being silly, refusing to acknowledge what good he had done. Owle took this as a sign of improvement.

"Anyway...we have to at least try, right? We can save the people who aren't too far gone, yet, and spread the word so that they won't be converting any more people. Which may mean them slaughtering more people, but, hey...it's better than them becoming-"

Owle bit her tongue on the word Shades.

"-the Forgotten's servants," she continued, as if the minute pause had never occurred. "As for the rest, well...we've got enough people who can deal with them, don't we? I mean, you've got some people here, and I know a lot of people, and I bet the people I know know people, and..."

At this point, Owle realized she was rambling, babbling on just because she could, because the situation seemed horrible and she wanted to grasp at all the solutions she could. It would be alright, somehow. It would have to be. "Well, a lot of people come out of the woodwork when they know that the world is in danger?" Owle finished, sheepishly.

72Joseph Brown

Omikron, even after all this time, still had trouble adjusting to the idea that someone would actually want to be near him let alone touch him. Though he no longer recoiled in surprise, he still looked down at Owle questioningly. Though she was right, he did feel comforted.

"It is very good at preventing the masses from seeing the threat until it's far too late," he slumped down on one of the chairs in front of the map, "Thus unfortunately the best thing I can think of doing is preparing the shades to fight. Hold it back, or at the very least buy time for the heroes that will eventually come."

He looked down at the map for a minute. Just taking in all of Gaia laid before him, the world he wanted to save even though he was convinced that world did not want him.

"The man, the man who is rather beat up." He looked away from the map and too Owle, "He believes that some force is going to assemble those heroes into a group... Anima he calls it. Long forgotten bane of the Forgotten... I do not know though... I do not know."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

"You don't just put it down Athan, you can't. The entire universe banded together could only seal it away, and even then that seal has cracked under the stress. It just can't be done, it's a part of the universe." For all this depressing repetition there seemed to be a twinkle in the man's eyes, "We can attempt to strengthen the seal though, make sure it stays there."

His good hand went on the black tile embedded in the wall.

"Maybe even make sure it never bothers the world again."

He pivoted around and moved at a pace that seemed painful just looking at his injuries. He was examining Athan, seeing if he was up to the task as is. In his mind this was Atan Keil back from the dead. Here to resurrect Anima and lead the charge against their foe. The unfortunate part was this man was Athan Cole, a man who carried the weight of many recent events on his back.

"But I don't think either of us can do it in our current states. Now maybe..."

Athan

A voice in Cole's head seemed to blank out all other sound. It was a voice he never heard before, yet somehow he felt he knew it from somewhere. There was also a strange directionality to it, it was everywhere at the same time but seemed to draw him towards one of the large crystals hovering over the pools of inky darkness.

--- City --- --- --- ---

As they climbed the hill lined with what seemed to be endless abandoned buildings the end began to come into view. It seemed to be a unblocked gate, nothing more than an arch really. When you think about it who needs gates this far north? But still, like the last group when they passed though the gate they would enter the marketplace. A bustle of activity that for all purposes would appear human except for the fact very few humans were present. Rather they were all these cycloptic figures.

The newly dubbed Valiant shook its head. It had no qualms about being called anything. It simply made a mental note to respond to that word spoken by that particular human. Furthermore on the mention of Noel it nodded, and then motioned to follow.

It knew there was a Noel here.

73Designated Hero

It was a shame that the entire situation couldn't be solved as easily as Athan dealt with previous problems. If he couldn't kill the thing, how was he supposed to reassure himself that he had done a good job?

"Alright, so we can't kill it...but we can lock it up? Sounds like a plan."

Despite his long journey to the forgotten city, his numerous injuries, past and...slightly more recent, and the burden of many past crimes, he seemed confident. Although, knowing Athan's character, one probably would have been surprised to not see him confident taking all those things into consideration.

He seemed to be doing a good job of following the conversation, that was, until a voice suddenly resonated inside his own head.

Now, Athan was no stranger to telepathy given his relationship to Owle, but this was...different. It was in his head, but for some reason his attention was drawn away from the nameless figure towards a crystal not too far off.

Without so much as a word to his companion, Athan would start heading towards the crystal. And, if it was within reaching distance, he would extend his bare hand out to touch it.

If it wasn't, well, he'd stand just on the edge of the strange dark pond.

74Kalin DNom

It seemed she was on the right track at least. Or at least that's what Merielle took the sudden nod and change of direction to mean. Maybe one of the names had rung a bell. But as they entered the 'marketplace', Merielle looked around her in wonder. Was this was Georg had mentioned? What the others at the Temple had mentioned? They seemed so...peaceful. How could they? She pushed the questions back; at least till she had met Noel.

She shoved her hands into her pockets and resisted the childlike urge to ask a million and one questions. "It's amazing what you've done with the place."

75Owle Isohos

As Omikron looked down at her questioningly, Owle stared up at him innocently, a warm smile on her face.

She nodded to his plan...though she herself resolved to try to warn people. Who, and where, she had no idea, but...well, what better person to try to stop something in multiple locations all over Gaia than a telepath who could reach all over Gaia?

"The...what?" Owle asked at Omikron's obscure statement. "Anima? Isn't that like...spiritual energy, or something? I just always figured heroes gravitated towards one another, or sent out fliers, or had me shouting for them to all get over in one place now."

Not that I could fly over all of Gaia doing that...just getting all of Barton town aware was taxing enough before the Grand Battle.

76Joseph Brown

"Yes, a spiritual energy... It is their namesake of sorts." Omikron answered Owle, "The ability to use the power of soul as a physical or even metamagical force. A force that the Forgotten both craves and is vulnerable against. It does not hold the same dominance over it as it can exercise over the elements."

There was a pained look to Omikron, even moreso than usual. All this talk of Anima brought back painful memories of his tasks under the Forgotten. Deep down he knew what he was about to tell Owle was partially fault of his own.

"Usually Owle, heroes find each other, Anima was a special case. Villains come and go, The Forgotten is essentially a corrupted aspect of the very universe, an entity that needs to be constantly watched. The Knights of Anima, as they are sometimes called, were gifted in the ability to harness that spiritual energy to ensure the Forgotten remained... Forgotten." There was a long pause, "Their victory at this city... In retrospect... Seemed nothing more than the Forgotten's attempt to splinter the group. So its agents could..."

Owle didn't need to know the details... He couldn't tell her.

"Well, they were destroyed. Thus the Forgotten has gained increasing amounts of power everytime it has arisen since then... But this man believes that the knowledge of Anima survived."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

The injured man followed Athan in an attempt to get his attention, but it was no use as Athan was deaf to the world. He stopped in his tracks once the mercenary began to reach out over the pool of forgotten matter. Then he took a few steps backwards with what he saw.

A figure had risen out of the matter before Athan, a perfect silhouette of a humanoid. More detailed than a shade, as the facial features and markings of the body were visible and unique. The shape was distinctively masculine and Athan may have even had a feeling like the voice it was vaguely recognisable.

Then it spoke.

"The Dreamless Sleeper is both of protection and destruction. Trapped somewhere between the blessed ignorance of virtue and the cold delusion of vice, the Charge is under constant judgement as its path is a blur. Free to play the part of both saviour and slaughterer the Dreamless Sleeper's positioning will be forever important to both sides of a conflict. With all this said the Charge stands on the edge of change and therefore has what could possibly be the decisive power. The power to change oneself, to change others, and to change the flow of the conflict.

Athan Cole... Do you accept this charge?"

--- Marketplace --- --- --- ---

Yet it seemed the Shade now known as Valiant who was more childlike. Taking the "amazing what you've done with the place" at face value the shade nodded in agreement vigourously.

The shade seemed to know where to go as if by nature, and that was very well true. Thanks to Noel's situation he could be found just as easily by one shade as any other of the Forgotten's ex-servants. So Valiant led Merri through the market where Shades attempted to live out somewhat of a normal life, and then through another gate into a residential district, but then took a different turn than with Owle and Athan. They headed away from where shades lived and towards another section of abandoned ruins.

That's when Valiant stopped and pointed to a pale, white haired man, completely involved with a notebook and the ancient signs on the walls.

She had arrived.

77Designated Hero

Athan's hand immediately retracted the moment that the figure rose from the inky substance. He did not retreat for two reasons. It wasn't in his nature, and he felt a strange sense of kinship from this, well, figure was a nice way to put it.

Athan was never a big fan of the supernatural, finding it was much easier to trust things that he could bend, control, or smash. The supernatural was something that eluded him, it was unpredictable, and in most cases, it couldn't be harmed by brute force.

Yet the strange familiarity of the voice was enough to calm even Athan's short temper. He would stand, remarkably silent as he was addressed.

"Dreamless Sleeper, huh?"

Athan smiled at the strange being. Kind of a weird gesture given the supposed seriousness and unlikelihood of the situation, but that was just Athan.

"I like the sound of it."

There was a brief moment of consideration before he would actually answer the question that had been presented to him.

"Before I accept the charge..."

He would raise his left hand up, palm facing towards the messenger, as if to indicate 'hold on a second'.

"Answer me a few questions."

He'd lower his hand, losing that childish nature, taking on a more serious tone.

"Who are you? And why me?"

78Kalin DNom

Was it really that simple? No monsters to fight, no demons to slay? Just an odd vision or two, and there was the person she was looking for? Why hadn't Georg found him then? A million questions weighed on Merielle's mind as she looked at the man.

...But she simply stepped forward, and called out congenially. "Noel Chistatio?" She lifted a hand in greeting, but didn't move too quickly, she knew her blades had a tendency to flash in the light, and she didn't want to scare the man.

79Owle Isohos

Owle's mind absorbed this information, then flipped and did a double take. She knew little of Athan's history with this city...but she knew his people had a history in this city. In short, she knew he was one of them, and this caused her mind to leap to strange conclusions.

"So...wait...are you saying the people that lived here, the Tyr Kana, are Knights of Anima? Or, were? And it's stuff used to beat down the Forgotten?"

A simplified way of saying it. Owle didn't ask any prying questions; she assumed Omikron didn't truly know, or was leaving out boring details, rather than trying to hide something from her. She noticed the pained look, but he was speaking of something that had allowed the Forgotten to gain in power...why shouldn't he look pained?

80Joseph Brown

"In a sense you are correct, but not in the way implied." he still didn't look to Owle, rather he stared at a blank patch of ocean on the map, "Athan's people were among the last to adopt Anima from the order, but it was only because a sect of them had been corrupted by the powers of The Forgotten. The ensuing conflict destroyed both the Tyr'Kana and the Order of Anima... We'll most of both."

"To my knowing fewer than twenty Knights of Anima survived the battle. All but two were..." If Omikron had the proper physiology this is where he would get a lump in his throat, "Tracked down and eliminated. A grand master of the order, and a Tyr'Kana who had been recently initiated. The latter very well could have begat Athan's line."

He looked at that spot of empty map intensely as he did not want to continue this line of conversation at all. It was filled with too many memories and hazy half-thoughts. It was nearly too much... Yet he still wanted to continue talking about it. He straightened up slightly... Why did he? Wasn't this what he wanted to get away from all this time?

All roads lead to Syntaxis it seemed.

"Owle..." He abruptly broke away from the map for the first time to look her right in the eyes. The next part was more surprising, without any prompt on her part Omikron reached out and laid his hand on her shoulder, "My comments about the danger, which are still valid, aside... I am glad you came."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

"I am an echo of the past." The figure spoke without moving or reacting to any of Athan's gestures, "My future, the being who should rightfully pass the charge onto you, is incapable of doing so in this time period. Thus this method must be taken."

A pause to signify that answer was over.

"You have been chosen to bear this charge as your actions up to this point in the timestream have aligned you with its outline. You have acted with both the greatest concern for others as protector, and with only thoughts of violence as aggressor. Your lineage and relationships also play an important part as they offered you a more than insignificant chance of arriving here to accept the charge. Finally, your abilities place the your probability of fulfilling the charge acceptably above zero."

A second pause.

"I ask again. Athan Cole, do you accept the charge?"

--- Edge Chasm --- --- --- ---

On second look it turned out the man was rather high up as the gash in the elevated ruin had pushed mountain and wall far into the air. Shifting of Gaia and all that. He could still hear though, thus he turned around to see who was calling him.

"Ah! Hello there!" He didn't really have to yell but he did, "Give me a second!"

And with that he practically jumped off the ledge he was on, beginning a series of bounds from outcropping to outcropping. Not awkwardly like one would expect of the man, but he moved from jutting rock to jutting rock with a feral fluidity. Right up until he landed in front of Meri and, hilariously enough, dusted his jacket off.

"Yes, I would be Noel." He had exactly the type of voice one would expect. Soft, clam and still choked by the dust of a thousand old books, "How may I be of service Miss...?"

81Designated Hero

Athan would step backwards, running a hand through the length of his hair as he did so. The entire notion of becoming a charge for some unknown figure was a bit strange and off for him, but then again, this was a remnant of his forefather's civilization. It would be an honor to accept, and disrespectful to deny what had been asked of him.

"Athan Cole, do you accept this charge?"

Athan would pause, staring at the inky well that the apparition had formed from. Then, after nothing more than a few seconds of strange, awkward silence, he would raise his head and offer a brief nod.

"I do."

82Kalin DNom

Merielle smiled pleasantly, a lump in her throat as she thought of Ysamine, who was quite the same way, soft spoken yet passionate. There was a pause before she answered, why had she thought of Ysamine at such a time, was the woman still that much a part of her? Shaking aside the oddity, Merielle then stretched out her hand to Noel.

"Yes. My mentor spoke of you in a book he left me, and I'm trying to finish up some of his research." The harshness that was often in her own voice was gone as she spoke of Georg with fondness. "It was about Valiant ..." She motioned to the shade she had dubbed. "...and others of his kind. At least that is my belief. That they might be related to the incidents a few years ago in Barton as well as a more recent incident involving the Church of the Saint Matriarch's destruction..."

She then realized how badly that could sound if Noel was on the shade's side. "I'm not here to accuse anyone. I'm merely trying to finish up his research, and find out what happened to him."

83Owle Isohos

And that's why you invited Athan here.

At least that's what Owle would have said, if Omikron hadn't chosen just then to finally face her, looking at her directly. She felt his heavy hand laid gently on her shoulder, and Owle couldn't help smiling at his words. Not only did they make her feel warm and fuzzy inside; they gave her hope. The long trek to reach him hadn't been in vain.

"Me, too."

And for a while she just stood there, staring up at him as he stared down at her.

84Joseph Brown

And there they stood, silent, one content and one trying to figure out what on earth was going on. Or maybe those roles were more interchangeable than that depending on the situation. Of course in Omikron's case this was one of the first calm moments he had in quite some time.

"I do not know what to do Owle," his hand drifted uncertainly off her shoulder, "People are appearing here... A place forgotten for thousands of years, and that I have went out of my way to hide... Something is happening... I don't know what to do."

He didn't look away this time.

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

"So be it."

At that moment the darkness around the figure erupted into a column of liquid forgotten matter. A geyser that began to collect in the air until a floating ball of the substance had been collected. Then it swaggered, swayed and began to move. Before anyone could blink Athan was shrouded in darkness and substance.

It was only a moment, but in that moment Athan would have a dream.

Then the orb of forgotten matter would melt away from Athan, his mind more than likely not able to comprehend or remember all of the dream at that moment. He would feel reenergised though, like he had a new purpose... One he wasn't entirely sure of, but a good feeling none the less. Most importantly he would feel like something missing was restored.

And it was really. Jutting from where his arm once ended at the elbow there was a piece of jet black armour like the shades... Only it wasn't armour, the gauntlet like forearm and hand was just as much a part of Athan as the rest of him... Just like the shades.

Arm of the Sleepless Dreamer Wrote:

Anima Artefact

The Arm of the Sleepless Dreamer is an weapon rare amongst Anima Artefacts as it is not drawn from the soul of the user, but rather tempered from the fragment of a lost soul and held in place by forgotten matter. For this reason it is permanently active in its neutral form. In this form the gauntlet is as resilient as light armour, as strong as the user is, and as easy to manipulate as any body part. Strangely enough, one can still feel pain as if it was ones own arm in this form despite the armour. There are two other forms based on the judgement ability, which may be activated when the user wills. The continued use of judgement causes a great strain on ones very essence, thus using these forms for anything beyond short bursts is not recommended.

Judgement

Trapped somewhere between the blessed ignorance of virtue and the cold delusion of vice, the Charge is under constant judgement as its path is a blur.

Saviour: If the Charge is in the state of mind to protect when the Judgement ability is activated, the Arm will spread its armour up to the users shoulder. The armour thickens, the sensitivity to pain disappears, and the arm remains just as easy to manipulate. The user is then free to use the arm to block, parry, or even grab at oncoming blows.

Slaughter: If the Charge has visions of violence when Judgement is activated, then an identical gauntlet will grown on the users other arm. These twin pieces of armour offer very little protection above the usual, but grant the user great strength and speed temporarily. The user could wield a massive weapon, or even two very large ones.

"I suppose," Athan could once again hear the man, "I can't begin to comprehend what has just happened.

--- Edge Chasm --- --- --- ---

Returning the gesture of peace, Noel shook Merielle's hand.

"While I'm glad you're not here to accuse I'm positive these Shades are used to it." He remained calm but he had a very scholarly tone now, as if he was teaching Meri something, "It's an unfortunate fact that the shades were created by a malevolent entity as tools of destruction. The shades here do not follow that entity though, rather they are led by a shade commander that broke free of the entity known as Omikron. Thus they now only wish to live in peace as to avoid their destructive purpose."

He then looked a tad shocked and shook his head.

"My, that came out a bit wordier than I had hoped." his composure cracked a tiny bit only to be regained once he cleared his throat, "Ah yes, the incident at the Church of The Saint Matriarch, we only recently learned about that travesty. Rather unfortunate... It's a good thing that that man appeared here otherwise it may have went unnoticed."

85Owle Isohos

Owle sighed. "Whatever you can, I guess," she answered. "I'm here, now, and I'll do whatever it is you need me to to help."

The Forgotten was her business as much as it was Omikron's...after all, wasn't it the Forgotten that had taken Sey from her? Corrupted the friend she'd known for a long time as something pure? Owle had failed back then, to stop it...even though she had been right there.

She wouldn't fail this time.

"People do tend to pop up at exactly the moment they're least wanted, but sometimes they're the most needed," Owle shrugged. What she was saying didn't make sense, even to her. "Maybe they sense what's happening, too."

Besides, why else would anyone be here but to find the shades?

She interrupted his speel with only a quiet, "Sometimes, the tools find out that they have a mind of their own..." and a smile. She said nothing else as his continued, but when he spoke of a man that had brought them news of the Church, her green eyes widened only slightly; it would take someone greatly observant to notice the flaring of nostrils, the tensing of her body as she quietly replied.

"A man you say..." Her fists tightened at her sides, and it would appear she was almost angry. As if it was something personal...

87Designated Hero

The darkness pulled back and once again, Athan was inside the mana forge. It was a strange feeling, like he had just taken a well-deserved nap in the time that the orb had surrounded him. There was a vague recollection of a dream, but he couldn't remember exactly what it was or the main purpose of it.

Regardless, Athan would turn around in response to the voice behind him. In that turn, Athan would catch a brief glimpse of the jet black appendage that was attached to his right arm.

Instead of answering the man, Athan would take his time inspecting the new forearm. Lifting it up in front of his face, turning it, flexing the fingers and testing his general control over the arm. Amazingly, it worked as if it were a natural part of his own body.

Only after a minute of examination did Athan lift his head to look upon his traveling partner.

"You and me both."

88Joseph Brown

"With any luck they will, Owle." The shadelord closed his eye and his larger hand went to his forehead, "I am quite sure that this is not something that I could contain with the shades isolated like this."

Frankly Omikron no longer wanted to look at the map and all its markings. It only reminded him of all the signs that were pointing towards what he believed was certain doom. He couldn't tell Owle that in so many words... Certain doom has a way of putting people on edge.

"I have an ominous feeling about this entire situation." Yellow eye once again was revealed to look at Owle, "There is too much happening at once for it to mean nothing."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

"Well, even if you are clueless you seem to have come out of it for the better." The strange man too was looking at Athan's new arm.

"I believe this may be the sort of phenomena I have suspected..." After a circle around settled back in front of Athan, "They believed you were needed and you found your way here... Then I worry that you may not be in the condition to perform at your peak... and suddenly you find yourself repaired."

"May I ask," He made a nod toward the arm, "How does it work and feel?"

--- Edge Chasm --- --- --- ---

Noel gave Meri a rather puzzled look. Had he said something wrong? He didn't believe he had mentioned something inflammatory enough to send someone into fist clenching suppression.

"Yes, a man. He hasn't given us a name but he knew a surprising amount about the Matriarch incident." Noel's speech slowed as he thought about what he said... No need to enrage the woman, "A strange occurrence actually. We believe he was in the building when Alpha... One of the destructive shadelords... Pushed his plan into motion. The strange part is that he both survived, and that the warp path Alpha used was somehow distorted enough to bring him here."

"No don't think me crazy," Noel said completely seriously, "But I somehow believe that people are being brought here. Too many arrivals to such an isolated place for it to be coincidence."

Merielle forced herself to relax. "I'm sorry." Whether he had seen her reactions or not, she felt the need to apologize for them. "The incident at the Church cost me a very dear friend. I only found out about it when his lawyer believed him dead and sent me his effects." For just a flash of a moment, she looked like a child lost, her green eyes swimming with tears.

"With so many lost, the idea that someone survived is good, but I'm greedy and angry that it wasn't him. I didn't give myself much time to grieve." She held her hands helplessly as she forced a smile to her face.

"I don't suppose I ever did make much of a paladin..." Why was she telling this man so much, had it really been that hard on her? She wasn't sure, but if she was going to go with this whole 'going with your heart' thing, then might as well go all out.

Athan's focus went back to his arm as he continued experimenting with the new appendage. Strangely, or perhaps it was just unsurprisingly, Athan was considering how strong the arm would have been. Would it take a lot of working out to get it up to par? Would it even grow stronger?

There was no way to test it, but Athan couldn't shake the curiosity.

"They?"

A brief pause as he closed the new hand into a fist and lowered it to his side.

"You mean Anima?"

Perhaps it was just a feeling of deja vu, but he couldn't help but think that he knew far more about this group than he had previously thought. There wasn't much time to think, as the question was asked the moment the thought had popped into his head.

"Feels like my own arm. Dunno if it'll be as strong though."

91Owle Isohos

Owle nodded. "Yeah..." She took a deep breath, then let it out again. "But it's no good sitting around and sulking about it, is it? Now, your meeting got cut short, so...if you want, we can stand here and talk about it...if there's anything useful we can accomplish just by that, then I don't mind. Or..."

And here she let her voice trail off, giving him a slight smile. "You can show me around the city. This place is fascinating! And I bet you've been in this room way too long."

92Joseph Brown

"No, there is nothing we can do for now. Nor do I want to bother you with such troublesome talk after a long journey. Yes, seeing the city is a good plan." He motioned her to follow as he walked to one of the low hanging free shade banners on the wall, "The problem with ruins is that to properly defend you need to know both the intended and unintended ways to get around."

He would pull back the banner to reveal a hole knocked in the wall leading out to a mostly decorative terrace. That's not to say it wasn't large enough to walk on, there was more than enough room for Owle to step out onto and for Omikron to follow if she did. The view from this point would be breathtaking, when Omikron decided to take her to see the city he was in no means kidding. You could see practical all of the upper circle, the gardens, the market, and even the large chasm where the mountain had collapsed. You could even see some of the lower city, and with the exception of a nearby hill, the snowy tundra went on forever.

"There is a quick way to move to the gardens from this ledge, though it is more dangerous than the way you came. Though knowing you, I should say more exciting route rather than more dangerous. That said, I will stay close."

He already was.

--- Mana Forge --- --- ---

"Not Anima persay, rather the forces that guide them." The man politely stopped looking at the arm and returned to a normal conversational stance, "Not gods or spirits, but rather the guiding forces of the universe that know our world's existence is in jeopardy if the Forgotten remains unopposed."

The funny thing was Athan's revival seemed to help the other man as much as Athan himself. He still looked as injured as ever, but his sense of purpose was beginning to return from its broken and battered state. Yes, this may be what he was saved for.

"But we must remember that with all these tools, knowledge is still our most powerful weapon." There was that instructorly tone, "I'm sure the forces will find a way for you to discover more about Anima... But it's up to us to find a way to test your arm."

--- Chasm --- --- ---

"That's very unfortunate, your friend and all." despite Meri's worries of gushing Noel did seemed somewhat concerned, "If you didn't have much time to grieve perhaps this man can help. As he was there I'm sure he can give you closure that nobody else could."

"I'm going to be honest though, I don't know too much about Paladins." there was a sparkle of inquiry in his eyes, "Though if its all the truth and justice bits I've heard about it seems awfully subjective. I suppose if you seek out knowledge then that's a good bit of the truth, and you are here so that one is covered. That and you didn't unfairly judge the shades despite what they may have done to your friend..."

"But I don't know much as I said. I am mainly a scholar studying the entity I mentioned created the shades."

93Tei Kae

"Truth is subjective. Each man has his own..." Merielle's responses were quiet, her hands resting on the daggers at her waist. She shook off her mood, and let her curiosity show.

"So tell me more about this..." She paused trying to remember what she'd heard it called. "...Forgotten One?"

94Owle Isohos

A smile on her face, Owle followed Omikron toward the banner. Normally she'd have objected that she didn't mind such troublesome talk...but if he was getting his mind off it she wasn't going to bring it up again. It seemed to her that he could use a break, and if someone didn't make him take one he'd just while the hours away tormenting himself with depressing thoughts.

"Ah..." Owle commented as he pulled the banner aside. She stepped through, and was immediately awed by a marvelous view. "Omikron, it's beautiful...I had no idea the city was this big." She let her eyes roam all around it, taking in all there was to see. She wished she had a pair of binoculars, so she could focus down on that group of moving shades over there, or that pretty little structure down that way...

"More dangerous?" Owle's ears perked up at the words. "Where?" She sounded like a puppy who had just been offered a yummy treat.

95Designated Hero

Athan simply nodded and cast a quick glance back to his arm. The thought of testing out the arm was appealing to him, so after his partner had finished speaking he'd take a moment to think out just how he could practice using the arm.

"Are there any training quarters in the city? Maybe something the shades use, or that the Tyr-Kana once utilized? Maybe we could find something there."

96Joseph Brown

There was a certain body language to Omikron when Owle responded to the dangerous route proposed. It was like his body was attempting to laugh, all the chest motions were there, as was the slight squint in his eye, but no sound. The minute the shadelord realised this he ceased the movement altogether.

"It is not a path as designed by architects, rather one that was created by the earth." He began to walk over to where the palace met up with the rockface, "The city is beautiful, but the overlook of the Tyr'Kana's gardens from this improvised space is outstanding."

And thus with a little hop Omikron stepped off the terrace onto a part stone part rubble walkway. It would take a little hopping and an awareness of ones footing, but it was manageable. Omikron was cautious though, and his large gauntleted hand stretched out to assist Owle down.

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

"Well, the shades all train en masse in the ballroom of the palace." The man already had an idea and was on the move, "But I don't think that will much use for what you're thinking of... Come this way."

He motioned for Athan to follow him down a pair of stairs he had hustled towards. It was obviously a long forgotten room as the forgotten matter spilled over the vats and streamed downwards stair by stair. There was a puddle of the stuff at the bottom of the stairs that the man made an effort to step over even though it obviously pained him.

"This place is an armoury of sorts." The room was lit by the same blue crystals most of the city was, "Thus there's this storage room where I'm sure we could cook up a few things... More than enough if we enlist the shades for help."

"Anything you had in mind to start with? I was thinking reaction time over strength, possibly more important given the timeframe we're working with."

--- Chasm --- --- ---

"Now that's a deceptively simple and complex question my dear." There was a certain glee to how he approached the subject matter. It was obvious this was his speciality, "The Forgotten One, to the best of our knowledge is less an identify that has been wiped from our history books... and remember this is only a theory... more of an entity that our very world cannot remember."

"The simple bit is that The Forgotten clearly opposes our world. Not necessarily due to an evil motivation, there's also a chance that it's just compelled to want to "bathe the universe in nothingness" as one of the Church documents stated. Though once again, this is all theoretical. Thus you can already see how this is getting more complicated. How it goes about this destruction, and exactly what the entity is... Well, that's shrouded in darkness. Not even the shades who are born from the forgotten seem to know exactly thanks to achieving free will."

He paused with a look on his face.

"I'm rambling again. Perhaps you would like to go somewhere, see something in the city. Or at the very least I could show you the notes in my study."

97Designated Hero

Athan would follow the man, making a move to help him over the puddle of forgotten matter despite the fact that previous attempts had proven futile. He'd step over the stuff shortly afterwards, seeing as how his guide had chosen to avoid it, he figured it'd be best if he did the same.

He'd do a cursory inspection of the room before stepping into the middle of the storage room, casting a confused look to his partner.

"So we're almost out of time?"

Athan simply nodded.

"Whatever you say, bud. If it's not as strong as the original I can make up for it with what I've got left."

And he affectionately patted his left arm with the black hand.

98Owle Isohos

She would take his hand, if only to make him feel better about her relative safety. Her scales were somewhat slippery on the stone, causing her to slide alarmingly in some places, but those little wings she had weren't just for show. Fluttering them, along with her body's natural efforts to regain balance, kept her steady enough that Omikron never had to grab her.

She was grinning, all the way down.

"This is awesome."

99Tei Kae

Green eyes simply stared back at Noel, puzzled. It wasn't that Merielle was dumb, far from it, but she was having a bit of trouble with the concept. Even at the height of her 'devotion' to Falis, she had never believed that one could just go back to nothing. For not before creation was there nothing. Something couldn't have been created from nothing, for 'nothing' was something. Then again, that was probably her high school philosophy class talking. But what about the time...

She was starting to make her head hurt again.

"That sounds fine, Mister Chistatio" She smiled when she realized that he had mentioned several choices. She really wanted to see the man, but then she was knew, and probably wouldn't be trusted just yet. Kinda like that time in the Ziabza tribe when I and Yasmine...

"The notes that is...""

100Joseph Brown

While she was obviously keeping herself steady Omikron remained vigilant by nature. He didn't want any harm to anyone by his hand or by his negligence, this applied to Owle especially. Thus he had suddenly sprinted ahead and his thrust out his arm to bar her from going past when they came to a particularly steep spot.

"Careful going down here." He looked over his shoulder to make sure she hadn't slipped, "This is where it gets difficult. Or... I suppose... More awesome."

While his regular hollow tone hadn't changed, it was obviously a joke of some sort. The mammoth shadelord was trying his best to lighten up for Owle as she had always attempted to get him to do so. Perhaps, even moreso than the steepness, that was also the reasoning behind why he had stopped her here. This spot was perhaps the best view of the mana gardens one could get. One could see the maze of stone pathways, and the jungle of strange plants mysteriously thriving this far north. There were other spectacles, such as the two floating crystals at the far and near ends, as well as the temple turned forge right in the middle of the foliage.

"Shall we descend?"

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

"Always assume that we're running out of time when it comes to this problem," The man examined the room further to see what he could find, "It has all eternity, and we have but one lifetime it can easily steal."

The man seemed to become interested in a pile of long wooden sticks. Dowels or poles some would call them, obvious they were for construction of some sort. The injured man picked one up, and smacked it against the ground a few times. It broke on the second swing.

"It's why need to uncover what the entity is up to, and begin to prepare." He picked up a second stick and repeated this process, this one was more sturdy, "Only then will we know how to act."

It was then the injury seemed to disappear, or at least be easily ignored. With a surprising burst of speed the man took one step forward, slid both hands down to one end of the pole, and swung as if it was a bat at force. The target of the stick turned staff was of course Athan's new arm.

--- Chasm --- --- --- ---

"Yes, come right this way then." The scholarly man motioned moving back into the city but not towards the market, "My collection is at my residence."

When they moved as would the shade Valiant, who had been standing there quietly the whole time. Noel would notice this, and more than likely the shade would make its presence known to Meri. If there was still assistance needed all she would have to do is ask.

"The shades don't trust themselves. An unfortunate side effect of being used as tools for so long." Noel would begin on the walk over in reference to Valiant, "They are afraid that they if they let their guard down for one moment they will revert to being a danger. At the same time they are worried that humans will only judge them on what they have done. Thus while they isolate themselves, they attempt to help as much as possible when one of us stumbles upon the city. It's a strange existence."

101Designated Hero

Athan was facing his nameless companion with his right side towards him, taking his own time to look over the room for any sort of secrets, perhaps ancient weaponry, that might have been hidden within the walls.

Perhaps it was a fools hope, seeing as how most of the weapons had succumbed to the pressures of time through rot, rust, and pests. His search was cut short anyway, because as soon as he caught a brief glimpse of what his partner was planning, he had already completed the step and was bringing the stick around.

Athan would react as quick as his new arm would allow, straighten the arm, turn the wrist, attempt the grab the makeshift bat before it struck against his arm.

His fingers closed a little early in an attempt to save his palm from the impact. Instead, he took a sharp strike against the knuckles of his hand, which resulted in two things.

First, Athan shaking out his hand as he was pretty sure that if there were bones in the arm, they would have broken. And second, the realization that his new arm could, in fact, feel pain.

But on top of that it felt as if there was some natural padding there. Like he were wearing a long glove over the appendage.

"Armor...?"

He asked himself, staring at the hand in question. True, the Arm of the Sleepless Dreamer did look as though it were a light gauntlet, but it felt just as natural as his left hand. Hence Athan's confusion.

102Owle Isohos

When he looked back, Owle was hovering, the digging claws of her toes just lightly touching the surface of the rock. She had tried to stop short when Omikron barred her way, resulting in a bit of a slide and a hasty recovery on her part.

She chuckled at his joke, smiling in surprise. For a moment she was unable to believe what she had just heard, then she took his hand again.

"Of course."

As they began to move downwards, towards the beautiful gardens, Owle halted for one moment, teetering a bit on the edge of the stone. "What is all that?" she asked, making a kind of shooing gesture meant to point to everything below her at once.

Question asked, she would continue to carefully pick her way downward.

103Joseph Brown

((God help me if this move bringeth upon me the ire of Kat.))

--- Cliffside --- --- --- ---

"Those are the Mana Gardens." Omikron forced a note of respect into his voice. Not because he didn't respect the gardens, he believed the beautiful, but because if he didn't make an effort he would just sound as hollow as usual, "One of the Tyr'Kana's greatest achievements. They were a magically spectacular race."

While Owle made her way down carefully, Omikron could not ignore the physical forces that would act upon his large frame. With every step he brought a little bit of the hill down with him. He kept moving where he could, stepping quickly so the rolling stones and dirt didn't take him along on a roll to the bottom. Occasional he would find a stable patch, and wait carefully balanced for Owle.

"The crystals create an environment where flora, both practical and decorative, can flourish." He spoke only when he had a moments rest, "The crystals absorb and amplify magical energy, allowing the plants to grow, and granting shades to exist without having to kill for energy."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

Once the stick rapt against Athan's knuckles the man pulled back the staff, and planted one end on the ground. Leaning against his makeshift cane, the man allowed the suppressed pain to wash over himself, showing no signs of discomfort other than focused breathing and a slight shudder through his body.

"It's possible your arm is a combination of forgotten matter, and an anima artefact." He went right back to his matter of fact tone, "One material is meant to contain soul, and one draws on power from your own. The armour feeling would be physical properties of forgotten matter, it hardens slightly with physical contact, and is able to form armour plates when exposed to powerful magical shaping. Any pain you feel may be because the artefact is linked to your soul."

The nameless man shrugged.

"Only theories though. There are as few Anima experts as there are experts on the Forgotten," he motioned to the pile with his staff, "Find a sturdy stick, we may as well test your swing."

104Owle Isohos

"Huh," Owle commented. "That's funny. I thought the Tyr Kana hated magic. But that might just be Athan not liking it."

Owle would do her best to keep up with Omikron, which made for even more dangerous slipping and sliding on her part. More than once she wound up clear into the air, without any earth beneath her feet. It was fortunate that she had those little wings, and the will to use them.

"It's beautiful," she replied, once his explanation was over. "And amazing. Those crystals can do all that? I've seen...something like that, once before."

The memory ghosted through her mind of a corridor filled with crystal, each facet of the stone reflecting back a memory mixed with a dream, a desire mixed with reality, a nightmare mixed with history. As she had gotten further and further towards the heart of the maze, her snakes had come to life, becoming visible in the very air around her...

Wonder if I'll get a similar effect...

It would be strange if she did. On the one hand, Owle always found magical amplification of her snakes to be a desirable, addicting sensation...much like a roller coaster ride. On the other, how would Omikron react upon seeing her as she really was, the serpents drifting out of her form and tasting the air? If Owle wasn't used to it, she'd probably find it a little creepy. Naturally, she failed to consider that the shades themselves had creepier things among their number.

105Tei Kae

Meri smiled at Valiant, a warm and sincere smile that didn't match the scar along her face at all. "If you judge by a whole, so shall you too find yourself judged." She muttered to herself.

"But it worries me that they might find themselves manipulated and used as tools in another fashion if they try and be too helpful as well.", she commented as her attention was dragged back to Noel. "I've been a tool. And I thought I was doing good..."

106Designated Hero

Athan shrugged his shoulders. It was strange to him that, here he was, for all intents and purposes a descendant of both Anima and the Tyr'Kana, and his knowledge was so lacking compared to that of this nameless man in front of him.

He would set about kicking through the pile of dowels, finding none that could match his standards, and few that looked as though they wouldn't crumble to dust in his hands.

Eventually he settled on gripping one of the sturdier sticks, taking a few experimental swings with his left arm before transferring it to his right hand, where he repeated the procedure.

"Hmm."

His right hand tightened its grip on the stick, and he turned away from the nameless man, aiming to strike the stick against one of the more sturdy-looking walls in the armory.

The end result was the stick snapping at the main point of contact, splintering away and clinging to the rest of the main body by the wood's skin.

"So far so good."

Athan inspected his handiwork, looking over the breaking point, appearing as though he was somewhat disappointed that it didn't snap clean off.

107Joseph Brown

--- Cliffside --- --- --- ---

"It is a complicated history Owle." Once again Omikron held his arm out to warn of a final drop before they were in the gardens, "The Tyr'Kana were both great warriors and great magi, there culture unfortunately leaned towards Athan's thinking. Ignoring the magi completely and glorifying the warriors, the kings were the greatest generals and even the high priests were only those that could fight as well as comprehend secrets."

Insuring that Owle had stopped Omikron bent at the knees and jumped off the edge of the cliff. He plummeted for a bit, but it was clear the shadelord was still in complete control. When he hit the ground with a resounding thump, he landed so that the impact would be dampened and was crouched right the the ground when he stopped moving. Calmly he arose and looked up towards Owle.

"Be very careful," It wasn't a yell persay but Omikron was speaking louder, "I will catch you."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

While Athan was looking for a stick there was work beginning in the background. The shades had mostly been making weapons to arm their current troops with weapons beyond what they could conjure at a moments notice. Items crafted from Forgotten Shadesteel had properties that regular Forgotten matter weapons did not have, plus it was less taxing on the shade to fight with. It was at The Strange Man's advice that they decided to create a small stockpile.

Thus from down the stairs came shades in three pairs carrying a rack of weapons or armour between the two of them. The strange man seemed pleased at both the shades and Athan.

"Well, if you can swing still... What do you use?"

--- Chasm --- --- --- ---

The walk continued as Valiant seemed surprisingly glad from Meri's words. Not from facial expression, as one eye doesn't covey emotion very well, but rather the way the shade moved.

"Thought you were doing good." Noel was a curious one and that love of research came out in his voice, "I don't mean to pry, but I thought you said you were a paladin. Now unless it was of some darker god... Which I'm assuming not since if you shunned their ways now you'd refer to them as dark or death or whatever silly word knights... I've digressed, I thought paladins did good in general?"

108Tei Kae

Her hand swept up, brushing a lock of hair from her face as she looked at Noel, giving Valiant another grin, and a small 'thumb's up'. "Paladins, whether " And here she made the quotation marks with her fingers that she found so amusing at one point, but had picked up as habit. "..evil or good..."

"...do good according to what their belief system is. I was one a paladin of Falis...and I tried to do good. I'm not saying that their intent was wrong...but I'm coming to think their method of going about it is wrong. I'm told that my own father didn't acknowledge me because he was a paladin, and was supposed to be pure of nature. I was his sin. I found out later this was only partially true. And I watched as our god tried to mold an innocent child into a living avatar of itself, but not giving her the protections of such...as if she were a another...Oh...what's the term...they're rather rare around here..."

She was thoughtful as she tried to remember the term and looked back at Valiant to see if he was still around. "Oh, right. Christ. As if she were another Jesus Christ. He was a figure from a religion called Christianity, and basically the child of god, who was sacrificed for the sins of the whole of humanity. And that's what Falis was doing to this child. Trial after trial, and she was allowed no real say so in the matter unless she wished to leave his side. But Falis knew she wouldn't do that." As they passed a building, Meri struck out, striking the wall with her fist, the spot in the wall crumbling beneath the onslaught.

"Sorry..."

109Designated Hero

The makeshift staff was dropped as soon as Athan caught notice of the shades descending from the staircase. The weapons they brought were unexpected, but hardly unappreciated. After all, Athan had never expected to be thrown into a battle shortly after arriving in Syntaxis, nor did he expect to ever regain his lost forearm.

So when packing for the trip he had abandoned what little armor he wore and chose to invest in a smaller, lighter sword that could be wielded in one arm. It was still big by most standards, but uncomfortably small for Athan.

He took his time, perusing the various items.

"If Omikron did as much research on me as he led me to believe, I shouldn't have much trouble finding something..."

Athan would reach out, grabbing out for the tallest sword he could possibly find. Whether or not it was up to Athan's standards would be determined once it was removed from the rack.

"...like this."

The weapon was not as massive as most of Athan's weapons tended to be. It was an impressive feat that the shades were able to create weapons from such a metal, but the lack of size and bulk was a little disheartening to Athan, who had only chosen to wield a similar weapon out of necessity.

It wasn't like the weapon was tiny by any means. It stood just over five feet tall and was a hefty item, weighing close to fifteen pounds, but hardly the stone breaker that Athan had chosen to wield in past adventures.

After a cursory inspection, he frowned.

"You have anything bigger?"

110Owle Isohos

"Ah..." Owle said at his explanation, a sound made both to express her wonder at the notion and to confirm that she'd heard what he said. If Athan's grandfather was any example, she was surprised the Tyr'Kana had trusted the mages long enough to let them build the beautiful garden...but, she suspected, it had probably been necessity more than trust, if they wanted to survive in these frigid temperatures.

She watched, heart in her throat, as Omikron leapt off the cliff, and the thud was so loud she kept expecting to see a crater form around him.

"Alright!" Owle shouted back.

And then she did something she never thought she would do. She jumped, aiming for a place where it would be easy for him to catch her, just a little bit in front of him.

She didn't open her wings. She didn't try to stop herself. For the first time in her life, Owle let herself fall, relying completely on someone else to catch her.

111Joseph Brown

--- Gardens --- --- --- ---

If Owle did trust Omikron would not fail.

There was no joking when it came to this part, from the moment she jumped a yellow eye was watching how she would fall. There would be a few steps, a quick glance, an adjustment of steps and then one last glance. This was to the shadelord's satisfaction, and as the jump was not ridiculously high Owle would be falling into his now outstretched arms at that moment. Knees would bend to ensure Owle had the softest landing possible, but the catch couldn't be all softness as Omikron had to ensure strength to support her. There was no doubt his large right arm could support as it reached behind her back and under an arm. He couldn't leave her like that, too much of a jerking motion, thus fluidly his free arm pushed up from behind her legs to scoop Owle up.

Omikron had only decided to catch her this way because it appeared most comfortable. The moment though lasted longer than a simple catch, shadelord cradling shifter.

A yellow eye blinked before the thought of what came next even came to mind. Realising not the moment, but the fear Owle may have been uncomfortable in his gauntlet like arms, crouched slightly and began to drop his left and therefore Owle's legs. It would be easy to get up once feet touched ground.

"Well..." The shadelord turned away to face the gardens as he attempted to remember his place, "It was the rift between the warriors and the magi that allowed The Forgotten in... The mages believed they were in an unfair situation, while the warriors were never prepared for such an opponent.

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

The two shades that had brought down the sword just looked at each other, and then to Athan with a dumbfounded look in their eye. They had just brought down the weaponry suited for human and regular shade sized creatures. This man wanted something bigger? They looked to the man with no name in hopes of some sort of signal, and he just looked stern.

"Well, you have heard Athan." While this was the strongest sternest tone he had spoken in thus far there was no note of superiority to it, "You should get Athan one of the swords made for the Rooks. They won't miss it, they prefer beating things down with their bare hands anyway."

And the two nodded in unison and ran back upstairs to raid the weapons intended for shades and not storage.

"Is there any armour you usually use Athan?" Once again his tone was matter of fact but not condescending. The man was honestly worried about Athan going into battle unprotected, "If this doesn't suit we can have the shade try again. They're not exactly used to making armour that doesn't fuse to the body."

It was then one of the shades returned with a new - much bigger - sword. The small pawn type barely was able to keep it off the ground. As it pulled and stressed the second shade peaked down the stairs getting another look at it before returning to the forge. The sword carrier's eye was wide at the lack of help, but it somehow managed to present the sword to Athan.

Item Get Wrote:

[Rook's Destroyer]

Forgotten Shadesteel Greater Sword.

The Destroyer was crafted in the Syntaxis Mana Forge to be used by the largest of the large shades, the Rook. These behemoth creatures would be able to wield such a large weapon with a single hand, even though weaponry is often consider a fallback for the hands on Rooks. A strong human could hope to wield the sword with two hands as long as they sacrifice all grace.

Like all weapons made out of Forgotten Shadesteel the weapon is entirely crafted from the black metal. The blade has no fancy decorations, just two well sharpened edges and a good deal of weight. The hilt had a similarly utilitarian look, reflecting more the shade's tendency towards points, edges and layering rather than the human and elven habit of rounding everything. For Athan's convenience the long handle was wrapped with the thick leather of the north.

The sword has no additional magical properties other than the innate properties of forgotten shadesteel. Forgotten shadesteel, as it is created from forgotten matter, is highly magically resistant. Thus most weapon breaking, melting, or hijacking abilities are difficult, but not impossible, to cast against the Rook's Destroyer.

--- Western Quarter --- --- --- ---

The group of three had wandered from the absolutely ruined chasm, into the shade repaired western quarter. The buildings here had been redesigned to provide "homes" for the shades, creatures that had never been used to such a concept. Thus the building often housed ten or fifteen shades with an amount of personal space most people would find appaling.

They didn't mind at all.

"No, no. Don't apologise, I've talked your ear off more than enough today, and will likely continue doing so once we get to my home." He smiled and Valiant nodded to back him up, "It's a very interesting story behind your personal philosophy. Myself, I've only met one follower of Falis... Shortly after I began to help Omikron prepare our first attempt at a home actually... But I've digressed now, continue if you'd like."

At the mention of armor, Athan had begun to peruse what had been brought to him. Athan was no stranger to wearing armor into combat, although he always tended to rely more on his ability to shrug off damage than to resist it.

"Normally, no."

Even as he said this, his hand was reaching out for a chest plate that looked big enough to slip onto his larger frame. His right hand held it in place as his left knocked a few times atop the shadesteel, perhaps testing it or, more likely, just killing time as he debated whether or not to put it on.

"I think I might make an exception this time around."

And he slipped the chest plate on over his head before fastening it over his torso. A pair of smaller shoulder guards followed, and lastly, a light gauntlet and forearm bracer to cover his left hand to help balance out the protection his right arm already offered. This left his upper arms bare for the most part, but Athan was overdressed as it was. Any more and he probably would have started to feel uncomfortable.

He strapped, clicked, and locked the various armors into place just around the time the pawn had drug the impressive sword down to him. Athan looked at the weapon, the pawn, then his new friend before smiling.

"Thanks, bud."

And he took the weapon from the pawn with one hand, impressively hefting it up into the air before setting it hilt-first onto the ground and running a hand along the flat edge of the weapon. It was an impressive piece of work. Utilitarian, much to Athan's liking, and just as heavy as it was large.

"Now..."

He tossed the weapon up to his right hand by the bladed portion, catching it at the hilt and balancing the weapon on his shoulder as he turned to face the nameless man.

He certainly looked more formidable than when he had first arrived. In the span of a few hours Athan had undergone a dramatic transformation. From a haggard wanderer, beaten by cold and fatigue, to a man worthy of being called 'warrior' once again.

"What's next on the agenda?"

Meri smiled and shook her head. "No, it's fine. I know that Sey isn't completely blameless. I heard tales of what she did during the Grand Battle." She seemed to realize that she wasn't speaking to a fellow Falican who would know the girl who'd been seen as the Savior of the Falican Order. " Pardon. Seyumi was the name of the girl I mentioned. But she's been raised to believe in the power of Falis since she was a babe. Even the first time I met her as six, it was known that she would become a great one..."

Merielle laughed in memory. "Though I believe her father thought she would become a paladin or some sort. She was a bit like a hyperactive child on sugar. Never still for a moment. I think Georg understood that." That brought a bittersweet smile to Merielle's face to think that that wonderful man was gone. "I know he seemed to understand my own inner conflicts. He was the strongest mage I ever knew. Physically, mentally and otherwise...I still don't understand how he---" She paused, unable to for a moment hold back a sob for the man she loved like an uncle. She hadn't seen him in years, and yet, it hadn't mattered.

114Owle Isohos

"Whoa!"

Owle was just a little worried as she felt Omikron's hand against her back, afraid he would crush her tiny wings. He did not, however, and Owle was ashamed of herself for even worrying. She wasn't used to freefalling, at least not in this shape, and the moment that passed gave her a moment to catch her breath after that exhilarating rush of adrenaline.

She grinned up at him as he blinked down at her. "First step's a doozy."

He held onto her a little longer, and Owle was grateful. She assumed he'd noticed how disoriented she was feeling from the fall and was giving her the time she needed to recover from the rush. If he'd set her down any sooner, she'd probably topple over again.

When her toes touched the ground, she stood under her own power, trying but not succeeding in wiping the smile off her face as Omikron discussed weightier matters.

"So....you're saying the mages just let the Forgotten One in? Because they were feeling unappreciated? That sucks."

She paused for a moment, letting the full implications of that sink in.

"But...the mages must have tried to get away at least, right? Didn't they realize what they were up against?"

115Joseph Brown

--- Gardens --- --- --- ---

"They had no reason to, Owle." The hulking figure spoke as he began down one of the stone paths, "The magi that summoned the Forgotten became the avatar of the Forgotten and was granted great power to accomplish his goals... Unfortunately, while the Magi was successful in starting a civil war, much like your friend Sey his goals were corrupted to align with The Forgottten's."

Omikron didn't say anything after he realised he had evoked young Seyumi. A girl who he had unwittingly assisted down a dark path, and who's failure had given him his freedom... A girl who would only later come to assist his people despite what they had did to her. Thus his armoured feet clicked along the hard ground unaccompanied by his words. He was still paying attention to the variety of colourful flowers and impressive trees, and was making an active effort to lead Owle down the most interesting path.

"It was... Unfortunate..."

--- Mana Forge --- --- --- ---

The injured man looked Athan over from head to toe, he certainly was a formable warrior now.

"I believe the best course of action may be to return to the palace's war room." The man had already begun to shamble up the steps, "I've told you all about the past, so I may as well catch up up on recent developments. Though, now that you're geared up you may just want to train with the shades up that way."

"That is unless you have something else you'd like to see around the city?"

--- Western Quarter --- --- --- ---

"Sey... Why do I remember that name?" In truth the girl had attempted to heal him when he specifically instructed her to stop, he had blotted out that memory.

"No matter, I'm sure I'm just over thinking." He smiled and shrugged, "So, I'm assuming that this Georg is the man lost at the temple?"

116Owle Isohos

"They summoned the Forgotten?" Owle exclaimed, disbelieving. How could anyone do that? To their own people? How could they...?

...oh.

Owle had stopped paying too much attention to the trees, and was mostly paying attention to Omikron. It was only after she realized she was staring at him that she began to look at the beautiful garden around her, tossing concerned looks at the silent shadelord now and again.

"Sey chose her own path."

The words were said bitterly, more than a little out of character for Owle. Something about it had stung her deeply, and the wound had never quite healed. "I was there, Omikron. I was in her head while it happened. I warned her, and she didn't listen to me. She was too obsessed with power...she always was."

117Designated Hero

"I have a feeling I'll have plenty of time to tour the city once we tie up these loose ends."

With the Rook's Destroyer balanced on his shoulder, Athan would start to follow his companion back up the stairs. All the while making a mental note to himself that he needed to rig up a new strap the moment he had some free time on his hands.

"As for training, I'd like to have an idea as to what's going on before I start gearing myself up for a big fight. I'm sure the shades wouldn't mind me missing out on a few exercises anyway."

118Tei Kae

"If you've been anywhere in Barton, you probably have. As much as I love her, she's hyped up on Falis as much as you'd think five year olds get hyped up on sugar." She began rubbing the bridge of her nose with her fingers. "I shouldn't have said that. Sey has good intentions, but she has a tendency to think that because she's been chosen by Falis, that her way is right. And it's her way or the highway.", this was followed by a hollow sounding laugh.

"I think she'd try to heal a necromancer if she saw he had a boo boo." , but she moved on in the conversation, as the first topic obviously had some bitterness to it.

"Yes. Georg was my mentor when I was younger, but apparently chose to follow another path. It was he that I got the notes from the shades on. His lawyers were instructed to hand me his effects when he passed on, so ...", her words trailed off.

"...I guess he's dead."

119Joseph Brown

--- Some time after the attack --- --- ---

It was becoming abundantly clear that the man who had helped Athan was cursed with an interesting life.

Alpha had orchestrated quite of plan to have access to the Moam Gate, and with most injured either in the battle leading up to or the chaos caused by opening the gate... Well, the man had to revise a promise he made to himself a long time ago. There were humans at Syntaxis now, a small force gathered by two deceived men who now slept with what they came here to destroy. For the first time in many years the man had begun to practice healing magic to sooth the battered humans. Still, he maintained a part of his promise as he still refused to heal himself.

Thus he retreated to a quiet place in the gardens, to sit alone with his bruises and scars. The shades seemed to avoid this place, and it didn't take the humans long to begin to do the same thing. Hundreds of grave markers worn smooth with time and long overtaken by plant life.

The man felt clam here amongst the spirits. He savored that feeling, as he knew there was even more work to be done afterwards.

120Tei Kae

Merielle hadn't any particular place in mind when she wandered about the ruins. Just a chance to find some solitude and perhaps think a little on things. This night, she's left her hair unbraided like she had when she was a child. She was even wearing the closest thing to a nightgown she owned. A pair of white linen trousers and a while linen top that went to her knees. Her bracers were still there, just in case. But her sword was gone and her feet bare.

"So much death, and so much pain, and in the end we all die...", she sighed as she found herself in the garden, her hand moving over a grave marker as she knelt beside it.

"Did you die valiantly, or foolishly...and does it matter now?"

121Joseph Brown

A voice.

Perhaps all the time with the shades had spoiled the man. Only a select few shades could speak, and even then most of them believed in brevity. Thus for the longest time all the man had to do was avoid Noel when he wanted quiet, easy enough when it was just two humans in the large city.

It seemed that time was over, and he once again needed to earn his peace. Thus he turned to see if he could assist the assumedly lost person.

Then he stopped and just looked. The voice had been vaguely familiar, but he had brushed it aside. Now there was no doubt, and he was rooted to one place once he laid eyes upon the other human.

"Merielle." He spoke in a hushed tone, almost as if he didn't want to disturb the moment.

122Tei Kae

At the sound of her name, she turned, and the moonlight softened her features to where she could almost seem as if she was taking her vows once again, except for the scar that crossed over her face. "Yes?", her eyes squinted as she tried to look at who called her. It didn't sound like Noel and the shades didn't talk much if at all. But the moonlight was behind him, and shadowed his being and she couldn't make him out, even if his voice niggled at her mind.

"I didn't mean to intrude. I was just..."a glance at the tombstone she touched, "...wishing someone dear to my heart found peace like I hope these did."

123Joseph Brown

Dumfounded.

There was a slow realization of how Merielle must have found her way here. It couldn't have possibly been with Vahn and Leonard, no he would have known about this earlier if she had been fighting against the shades. No, she had to have found this place by connecting the dots he did not have time to, making connections he didn't think of, and making a trip he should have.

She was always an excellent student.

But the fact remained that the only way she could have had the base information would be if... She had been told the man himself had died, and thus she had inherited his things.

"Peace." He regained the strength in his voice but still did not move, "To find peace in times like this would be selfish. Peace no, purpose perhaps."

124Tei Kae

"Purpose...." she sneered, her face turning ugly with unshed tears as she once more looked at the grave beside her, still not standing. "There was purpose once, and it turned a child into a monster, a warrior into a slave, and killed the man I looked upon as dearly as my own father. He sought purpose. He sought truth..." her hands dug into the earth, not so deep as to pierce but to grasp in frustration.

"I came here to complete what he could not, to give my own soul a bit of purpose...but all I can think of is how much I miss him..." she lifted her hands and let the ground crumble. "My pardon. It's been a while since I've seen a human who wasn't trying to kill another."

125Joseph Brown

Overwhelming sadness.

"Though purpose in the end saved the child, allowed the warrior to walk the path of redemption..." A pause and a sigh, "And gave a foolish man a second chance... No, third chance, to follow a purpose that is worth its salt."

It was about then that he finally worked up the ability to take a few steps forward. This was a part of his penance, he had to accept it. Thus his figure would clarify, his strong form besieged by injury and his kindly face wreaked with a guilt just setting in.

"I just did not know that the chance fate granted me, would end up cutting you so deep."

His name was Georg.

126Tei Kae

"..."

And she stared, her eyes widening and narrowing by turns. "Even Falis could not be so cruel." Slowly, she stood, her eyes locking onto his.

"Forgive me for intruding on your peace, stranger...", and she turned away then, the anger and sadness swirling within her until she knew she must walk away.

127Joseph Brown

((Finally. Jesus my internet made this hard to post.))

"Falis has nothing to do with it. Neither time Falis saved me, the first drove me away and this just confirmed..."

When her eyes locked on his stared right back. The was a cost for everything and facing this head on was a part of his salvation. He couldn't leave Merielle like this, it just wasn't right. She was strong, but now she was battered from crisis after crisis, at the end of her rope, faith running out. Georg couldn't let this be his fault. Especially since he realized the real danger of him losing his life in the coming conflict.

But he wouldn't regret it this time. He was happy to lay down his life for this cause.

Merielle needed to know this. Thus if she walked away he would follow.

"I've been an old fool."

128Tei Kae

She couldn't face him, not yet. But she did speak, her body tensing as he caught up to her. "There are no fools, but those who are afraid to fight for that which they believe in. A wise man once told me that." She felt vulnerable, not a feeling she liked in the least, and one that was unfamiliar to her. Before she'd always had Georg, the man she now knew was her father,Ysamine, or Falis, or at least her faith in herself.

But with everything crumbling around her, she had not even that. "Whether you be ghost, figment of my troubled mind or truth, tell me...why could you not share this with me? These people need help, they are strong, but they are no match for an organized effort. Already, their leader has been hurt in a fight with a man who was supposed to be a hero. Heroes who don't even know they are fighting on the wrong side."

"I'm a woman grown. I've seen wars, wars that you and others would have protected me from. I wasn't just a paladin. I was a soldier. I've loved and lost..." she said, as she thought of Ysamine. "But you couldn't even tell me about this, knowing that it will be dragged into the entire world eventually and I'd still have to face it."

"No. I had to think you were dead first. To receive your things from a lawyer who had no idea. To be haunted by your presence in my mind because I couldn't give you a decent burial." Her hands curled into fists at her sides, but she didn't go for her weapons like she would have as a teen.

129Joseph Brown

"Selfishness Merielle, selfishness." There was a heaviness to his voice as he spoke,"Though I would like to believe I had some honorable intent amongst it all."

He was near stiff as a board, he couldn't think of what to do in this moment and didn't want to touch her in fear she would pull away. He held on to the strongest face he had, even though no amount of upper lip stiffening could keep the colour from draining out of said face.

"The pure and simple response is that I did not want any harm to fall upon you. I knew your strength but..." This brought back bad memories, "It was after the incident... After I was pushed away from my... Our... Home. I had no more faith left Merielle, that not only could Falis let such a horrible fate befall on us for being in the wrong place at the wrong time... The lasting wounds were nothing compared to what I learned about the forgotten darkness that day. I lived on pure stubborn will alone that night Merielle, there was no divine intervention from the deity I swore my life too, the magic and prayers no longer worked. That's when I left, as I knew there was something out there more powerful than our god. The unfortunate thing was it wished to destroy us all."

His head would bow slightly and his hands would fold.

"I didn't know it would engulf the world Merielle, the thought never crossed my mind. I just knew that if I had let you known your reaction would be the same as mine... I couldn't inflict that blow to you Merielle, I didn't have the heart to hurt you and was blind to this greater hurt later on. It was foolish and selfish, but it was the only way I believed I could continue to protect you without being right there... You may know war, but you only have begun to know the horror of the Forgotten... I couldn't let it rend you, I couldn't let it tear your faith, I couldn't let it steal your soul... But then that night."

The bow would stop and he would look to Merielle to see if she was looking at him.

"When Seyumi... There's no point talking about it, we all know and I knew more than others. It wasn't the evil of that necromancer, but more proof that there was a being that cared not for the grace of Falis and corrupted even his most protected. The god I lost faith in went from being a betrayer to impotent, and at that point I was living in the belly of the beast... Another selfish action Merielle, apparantly my temperance had left me when I left the service of light... But I always planned on making contact again when I discovered enough to combat this entity, to so that you may have had a little light when the darkness came. But by this point I was broken, unable to admit the entity was anything other than unbeatable. That is when I willed everything to you... once again selfishly, but perhaps with some light. I wanted you to remember me not for the failure and fool I had become, but allow you to see that I had not just run away... Even though I had."

"I saw my death, either at the entity's hands or otherwise, as enevitable at that point. I wanted you to have whatever spark I had gathered... And secretly, I believed you could turn it to light."

130Tei Kae

She wanted to be angry, she wanted to rail at him. But she couldn't, in all good faith, because strangely she understood. Wasn't it the same she had done? "Then we are both selfish, Georg." And then she did something she hadn't done since she was a teenager, she made the first move for a hug, wrapping her arms around the older man like he was her father. And she wept. Both for him and for her, and for everything they had fought for and lost. But her voice was full of determination.

"We will win, Georg. As long as we are alive, we can fight, whether Falis be on our side or not. That is the one thing I have figured out."

131Joseph Brown

And Georg would make no attempt to resist, in fact his arms would wrap around her in turn. He felt he had to be strong, be the example, be the father figure... It would be like it was so long ago.

But after all of this he felt so weak.

"I..." A pause as the beginnings of her tears emerged, "I cannot do this on my own anymore. As long as we are alive we will survive... But alone it will just be more running for me... Or borrowing more power... I need your help Merielle. I need to rely on our own power. If you believe we can win, then together we can win."

And he bowed his head in turn.

"Otherwise we risk what is worth than death."

132Tei Kae

She lifted her head and grinned a grin that she wouldn't believe she still had in her if she'd seen it. She'd thought that grin gone long ago. "Every line of what you just said just sounded so incredibly corny, Georg..." her smiled weakened, "And yet, it's incredibly true." her tone was flat, even with the mark of tears fresh on her face.

And then she would look away, although she did not pull back.

"And I betray once more..."

133Joseph Brown

"If half of what I have learned is true... We know nothing of betrayal."

He continued to look on even as she looked away. There was a slight emptiness in his eyes, but it was only as he felt these thoughts so heavy. Twice he had been initiated into a brotherhood. Firstly as he believed in it, and then the second time because he believed it would matter. Both times he had betrayed them... Though did they betray him first?

"History has been paved by those who refused what their hearts implored them out of fear of betrayal. Fear that the world will see them as nothing more than a liar, when in truth they are only remembered as those who did nothing."

"We do not have that connivence. There will be no world to remember us if we fail."

134Tei Kae

She still looked away, but eventually turned back, nodding. "You're right, of course."

And she managed a weak smile.

"Alright then. What do we need to do?" Simple acceptance. Standing there in only a nightgown, her sword gone, only the bracers there for protection. Even as war torn as the area may be.
